Roman from Ontario, Canada. HS Teacher/Student Success Leader/Agent of Transformation. Glad to be with #122edchat tonight. Favourite time of pie: apple pie with vanilla ice cream!
Hi! Danielle Miller, 6th grade Math, and special guest host of #122edchat tonight with @mrstbauerly! My favorite type of pie is pizza.. but for the more traditional pie .. blueberry! :)
Phil from Northern Virginia signing in! I teach 7th grade US History II. For sweet pie.... PUMPKIN!! And for savory... PIZZA! (The good kind from New York) Excited to be here tonight! #122edchat
Hello #122edchat! Lauren from NY - 6th grade English teacher and author of EMPOWER Your Students & Curriculum at Your Core. Favorite pies are banana cream & key lime.
Happy Pi Day #122edchat. Melissa, 7th Grade Science currently buried in snow in Upstate NY. My favorite pie Strawberry-Rhubarb (both tart and sweet like me!)
Hello. My name is Susan, and I am student teaching in IL about to film my EDTPA lessons next week. My favorite type of pi(e) is Banana Cream Pie from @bakerssquare#122edchat
Happy Pi Day #122edchat. Melissa, 7th Grade Science currently buried in snow in Upstate NY. My favorite pie Strawberry-Rhubarb (both tart and sweet like me!)
I am Meghan, an aspiring Middle Childhood Math & Science teacher, studying as a grad student at Xavier. My favorite type of Pi(E) is Chocolate! #122edchat
Hey all - Shane from AB Canada. Teacher and education podcaster. For me, fave pie is rhubarb. And none of that strawberry-mixed-in nonsense! #122edchat
A1: You have to know your people. Some responses are loud, explosive, and everyone knows. Others warrant me pulling them aside, looking them in the eye and telling them, "I'm proud of you because....". All victories, no matter the size, MUST BE celebrated. #122edchat
A1: We love clapping for each other, for the little and big wins in my room! I make sure to call out individual student successes whenever they happen. #122edchat
A1: Positive phone calls home, displaying work in class on "brightest work board," class incentives like raffle prizes, written feedback, verbal praise, etc. It's amazing to see how much a little pep talk can brighten up a student and put a smile on his/her face. #122edchat
A1: I love to talk with my students about their successes- have conversations and let them see how genuinely happy I am for them. I have started tweeting more Ss work too. Need to do more to share w/ Ps & Community #122edchat
A1 I define student success as when they think, talk, and write about what genuinely matters to themโand that is itself a celebration of their values.
#122edchat
A1 For me, student success is celebrated daily with enthusiasm and appreciation for my students. We are a team and we celebrate our learning partnership! #122edchat
A1: It is all about making them feel seen. This does not have to be a spotlight. A simple recognition for some is more than enough but others do need the parade. Know your kids and know what they are comfortable with. #122edchat
A1: I love the idea of physical or digital brag boards for students (driven by students) and comment box style accolades. A heartfelt note can turn even the worse days around!
#122edchat
A1 I try to celebrate student success every day with acknowledgments. Whether it be fist bumps, shout outs, note cards, special treats; my goal is to make students always feel like they are on top of the world. Every student deserves to know they MATTER. #122edchat
A1: Sometimes I praise a student in front of the class, sometimes I have a private conversation to praise, sometimes I send an email home. I try to make sure make the praise so it leaves a positive impact! #122edchat@_on11 [insert reference from TV show I have never seen here]
A1: I love to reward student effort with praise and maybe a little treat! I also love sending positive notes home. Theyโre a good surprise for parents and the kids. #122edchat
A1 Never underestimate the power that saying "Way to go" and "I'm proud of you" can have on Ss at any age. I also love a high five and a WOHOO #122edchat
A1: I celebrate student success by sending a positive email home. Today, one of my 6th graders stood up in front of everyone and went up to pick a postcard to send to Stoneman Douglas. That act of courage made me tear up and made me realize how incredible our youth is. #122edchat
A1: I feel that we have had some much to celebrate this week with so many students recognized in the All-American Boy and Girls Contest. I think we need to offer personal congrats, take photos to save the moment and spread the good news. #122edchat
A1 I stand at the door and in the hall. Every kids gets a high five, a fist bump, and a smile. Success is different for everyone. Let's motivate! #122edchat
Wow! You guys rock! Such great ideas! I'm not a teacher yet, but def saving these ideas to look back on. It's so important to celebrate well! #122edchat
A1: I celebrate student successes by making positive calls home and by providing small rewards like sitting next to a friend or choosing to play a song during independent work. #122edchat
A1: If it is on paper, we hang it up. We give standing ovations for presentations. We have time for shout-outs for things they succeed in outside of school. Use as a great example or ask if I can use as an example to show next year's kids. #122edchat
A1: I feel that we have had some much to celebrate this week with so many students recognized in the All-American Boy and Girls Contest. I think we need to offer personal congrats, take photos to save the moment and spread the good news. #122edchat
A1 With shout outs, positive calls home, selfies with the principal, help with announcements, and recognition as PAWSome Student of the Month.
#122edchat
A1: Acknowledgement! and I like to celebrate the small stuff.... the more you celebrate the more motivating it will be to give maximum effort #122edchat
A1. We clap and applaud for each other. Do shout out for special occasions! We celebrated today finishing an assignment in classroom working together as a group doing dancing! Love to see the smiles! #122edchat
A2: During a lesson, I often call on students who do not have their hand raised. If the student doesn't know the answer, I encourage him to ask a question instead. This process allows for deeper understanding and it's great formative assessment. #122edchat
A1 I stand at the door and in the hall. Every kids gets a high five, a fist bump, and a smile. Success is different for everyone. Let's motivate! #122edchat
A1 I try to celebrate the little things. I send home positive texts using @Seesaw We also had our awards ceremony for positive character traits in class. It was very different and much more personal. I also show Ss how much they have grown in academics #122edchat
A1: I think every achievement is an opportunity to praise a student. Students need to feel valued and receive that affirmation. So many students get concepts but just lag the confidence, giving them that boost goes a long way. :) #122edchat
A2: Challenge Ss to work on their own/in groups to explore &discover a math concept. Ss often get frustrated & want help.. but I remind them productive struggle is the key to learning! It's not always going to be easy.. you just don't know it YET! #122edchat
A2: With an inquiry model in science, it's easy to promote productive struggle because students understand that science is a never-ending process - NOT just a content area. We don't fail in science - we just find ways that don't work! #122edchat
A2: I like to do projects that don't have right/wrong answers. We focus on quality of product & amount of learning done or how much we teach others. Ss are asking less and less "how many points?" "whats the minimum" and more "Can I do __" "What about__" #122edchat
A2: Working as a facilitator for @SmartLab_tweets, I have moved from being the dispenser of facts and information to be the encourager of student-led discovery. After the victory has been secured, it is essential to reconnect students with the win in spite of struggle. #122edchat
A1: I ask Ts to send Ss to my office, tweet pics of their success, write notes, and make positive calls home. #122edchat Kids also get to play on the #LEGO wall door to my office.
A1: I talk about them and their work. I send a few emails home. We also celebrate mistakes. Itโs through understanding them that we grow so much! #122edchat
A2 The W in EMPOWER is for Willingness to struggle in the service of their values. We have exercises in our book that help students develop that willingness. https://t.co/gJkpGucobu#122edchat
A2: explain to them the importance of what theyโre learning and how theyโll benefit from it in the future. If you canโt relate back to their benefit, itโll be an even bigger struggle #122edchat
A2: The key is to be authentic and let students see the T struggle. Don't sugar coat things, be honest when things are hard and you fail. Share the struggle and the #growthmindset to persevere.
#122edchat
A1: I like to celebrate students in a variety of ways-shout outs, fist pumps and quiet whispers of hoorays. It all needs to fit the Ss #122edchat#IHMarchmadness
A2: I want students to ask questions. I want them to discuss. I reply a lot with why? I want them to grow and not just rely on the teacher to have the everpresent answer. #122edchat
A2: I ask the students to explain how they got their answer, or why something happened. I want them to be able to talk me through the process. #122edchat
A2: During a lesson, I often call on students who do not have their hand raised. If the student doesn't know the answer, I encourage him to ask a question instead. This process allows for deeper understanding and it's great formative assessment. #122edchat
A2 Growth mindset. Talk about how when your brain struggles it grows. Get them used to digging for the answers, but make sure the effort is worth it for them and the end is a goal to meet #122edchat
A2: I've said this before, but learning #flocabulary songs and #MrNicky Social Studies Parody songs helps kids remember information that I want them to learn. #122edchat
A2: Trying to explore spoken word poetry. It has been a challenge that some are stepping up to with beautiful results and others are throwing in the towel, I pick it back up and we try again but they are being pushed. #122edchat
A2: I want students to ask questions. I want them to discuss. I reply a lot with why? I want them to grow and not just rely on the teacher to have the everpresent answer. #122edchat
A2: This year I have been trying to do that through PBAs. Students beg for a test because they say it is easier and less work. I know the struggle is 100% worth it, if it helps them grow in their learning! #122edchat@LCSCoach@loliveira55@ItsAMrY@ImPaulJoseph
A1 I try to celebrate student success every day with acknowledgments. Whether it be fist bumps, shout outs, note cards, special treats; my goal is to make students always feel like they are on top of the world. Every student deserves to know they MATTER. #122edchat
A2. We do a lot of open ended tasks. I throw information and manipulatives at the and ask them to explore. I strategically question them along the way so that they can make their own meaning and discoveries. #122edchat
A2: Ts in my building emphasize that struggle is okay. We have several bulletin boards to promote a positive mindset and show that learning strengths exist in many different forms #122edchat
A2: Productive struggle can teach perseverance. It is okay to admit something is difficult. We need to focus on how take on the task. Getting to the other side is even more meaningful. #122edchat
A2: "If it doesn't challenge you, it won't change you." 1 of my Ss quoted it for me today when another S said something was "hard." Let them know it's ok if something is "hard," but offer supports when needed. #122edchat
A2: Students love viral or YouTube challenges, so I provide them with challenges like "if 80% of you turn in the assignment before the end of class today, we will get a 5 minute break" #122edchat
A2- I spend a lot of time talking about the why is more important than the answer itself. We talk about getting there answers. Sometimes the getting there answers helps a discussion, gives an idea or a starting point. when we are wrong it helps all of us be right. #122edchat
A2: I strongly believe in productive struggle. I was interviewed for @joboaler book last semester, and I value a growth mindset. Our students need to know that mistakes help them grow if they choose to learn from them. #122edchat
A2. This one is harder with 6/7 year olds. It takes a lot of modeling and scaffolding to create a climate where it is OK to grapple. But also to feel safe to make a mistake. There is that fine line between frustration and growth. You have to know your kids #122edchat
A2: Productive struggle can teach perseverance. It is okay to admit something is difficult. We need to focus on how take on the task. Getting to the other side is even more meaningful. #122edchat
Barb, From Kansas Kindergarten
We love to celebrate little successes each day by doing Kagan cheers, spot lighting work on the document camera, texting a photo to Mom and Dad, posting a photo of our class page, showing off to another teacher.
#IHMarchmadnenss#122edchat
A2 Learning is not always and should not be easy. It is important to allow students to not only struggle but equip them with ways to get out of the struggle. Challenges are like puzzles, I want my students to think and be pushed so they can work together better. #122edchat
A1: 21st century learners are keeping up with the demands of todayโs society. They are innovative problem solvers with the ability to work independently or collaboratively #ycsdchat#122edchat#kidsdeserveit#edchatNZ
Sometimes when I introduce a new lesson I start it off at a challenging level or maybe without a lot of guidance (a lot of choice given) and will say "This may be challenging but I want you to ask questions and persevere" #122edchat
A2: fascinating question! I like puzzles and challenges but I hadnโt thought of productive struggles. Iโm going to add that! #122edchat#IHMarchmadness
A3: Many times! Like today Ss did a webquest about pi. It incorporated history, reading strategies, & science. They used interactive google slides to learn about the history of pi & read about how NASA uses it for many reasons like finding the distance between stars! #122edchat
A3: I teach STEM courses, so many are already cross-curricular. However, when we do research projects I integrate ELA expectations. Additionally, Ss choose to use Art as a medium to share ideas too. #122edchat
A3: Great educational experiences are like a casserole...a hodge-podge of connections across all domains. In the Lab, we are frequently seeking ways to connect learning and develop new unions. @mdeegan122 also had some great ideas for connecting Math to the real world. #122edchat
A3: Happy birthday, Einstein! I love pulling in informational text graphic organizers to help dissect science articles. Bonus - throwback to Einstein hair headbands from a couple years ago! #122edchat
A2: Ts in my building emphasize that struggle is okay. We have several bulletin boards to promote a positive mindset and show that learning strengths exist in many different forms #122edchat
A2: in foreign language, the challenge is to always communicate knowing that there will be errors and knowing that itโs ok. We can always seek clarification. The point is to not give up nor stay stuck. #122edchat
You could start off with something like a name game and talk about the productive struggle of it (hard at first to get everyone's names but gets easier as you practice and train) #122edchat
@MrPStrunk this the real life "Mr. Feeney". Although, I have never seen the show either, but I have been told that he is legit...much like Phil. #122edchat
A1: Sometimes I praise a student in front of the class, sometimes I have a private conversation to praise, sometimes I send an email home. I try to make sure make the praise so it leaves a positive impact! #122edchat@_on11 [insert reference from TV show I have never seen here]
A2. I love to do projects with plenty of exploring and problem solving which challenges them and makes them think. Getting them to explore using their senses and asking questions to find out how things work or what they are made of and how can we chane things? #122edchat
A1: My building gives out Randomn Acts of Kindness and Personal Best awards weekly. Iโve always made an effort to contact parents with good news. I use time each morning to not only set the stage for the day, but also give praise. #122edchat
A3: I teach science constantly in Social Studies. We had a conversation today about how water oases are found in the desert. We talked about springs, water tables, and told the Ss to look it up because believe it or not I might not know everything. #122edchat
A3B- We will often " Quick Read an Image" in ELA. We will look at paintings, photographs etc. and read it then figure out the story behind it. #122edchat
A3- ELA lends itself easily to incorporated other subjects. Often I will take a topic from Social Studies or Science and write about it. We are currently reading a short story about Pompeii and discussing a volcanic eruption. #122edchat
A3: One of my favorite cross-curricular was planning thematic units in NJ. I taught 7th grade history and worked with ELA teachers to create units based on an essential question. #122edchat
A2 #122edchat as a reading specialist, we have productive struggles everyday! I make them work through words they canโt pronounce & theyโre encouraged to look them up & learn the word. :)
A3 We did a cross-disciplinary unit on the question, โWhat does it mean to be successful?โ Our texts included The House on Mango Street, demographic data charts for our community, an article about making gourmet food from weeds, street art, and a poem about symbiosis. #122edchat
A3: My favorite tech projects to plan are ones that unite disciplines not normally joined such as social studies and math or PE, art, music, etc. with core subjects.
#122edchat
A3: One of my favorite cross-curricular was planning thematic units in NJ. I taught 7th grade history and worked with ELA teachers to create units based on an essential question. #122edchat
A3: We experimented with probability. We used the scientific method to help us determine theoretical and experimental probability of the amount of different colors of m&ms in a bag. #122edchat
A3 Teaching Science, math is obvious, but I also try to do SS and ELA. We all have to communicate and know our place in the world. Our Erie Canal Field Trip has a lot of opportunities for connections.
#122edchat
A2 This is a tough question and one we discuss often. Productive struggle for littles (K-3) is hard. They can absolutely do it, but they must first have trust built with teacher and classroom. We support and celebrate the struggle to show kids it is ok.
#122edchat
A3: I reached out to @SarahCaseyPE and @TuckerBrownPE to help me teach WW2. They designed a WW2 bootcamp, gave students draft cards, and then evaluated what level of infantry they would be in. Ss loved it! #PEandHistoryCollide#122edchat
A2 First of all, love the term productive struggle. I think, giving them tools to succeed rather than the answer right away. They CAN do it, we all put our Hawaiian shirts on one sleeve at a time. #122edchat
A2: I think it's important to share our own productive struggle as adults. It has to be part of the culture of the school at every level. We all have a responsibility to model a growth mindset and continuous learning for Ss. #122edchat
A3. I always talk about how the applications of the math we are learning. For example, we looked at mapping with scientific notation and coordinate graphing. My kiddos never ask โwhen will we use this?!โ #122edchat
"I'm proud of you." The words that I always longed to hear as kid. I freely share those words with everyone that I come into contact with each day. Costs nothing; means everything. #122edchat
A3: In Spanish, Ss were building a 3D city with places such as la panaderia (where pie is sold). Around that time in Math, Ss were learning about 3D shapes. Next year, Ss will learn the names of 3D shapes in Spanish! #122edchat
"I'm proud of you." The words that I always longed to hear as kid. I freely share those words with everyone that I come into contact with each day. Costs nothing; means everything. #122edchat
Q2: I encourage Ss to persevere with optimism. The fun in learning is the process, it's ok to make mistakes and to get the wrong answer. We learn from our trial and error. #122edchat
A3 Kids, life and learning were not meant to be compartmentalized. As much as I can, I try to include all skills and content in my courses (ELA). Doesn't matter if it assessed formally. The point of school/class is to learn. I want to show them the interdependence. #122edchat
A3 #122edchat My students do not have room in their schedule for social studies, so I try to incorporate 6th grade ancient civilizations reads when opportunities arise so theyโre exposed to the ss curriculum while improving their reading skills!
A3: This is definitely a place that I need to improve! I try to include vocabulary, reflection, and discussion. We did a #mysteryskype and we used Google maps & geography to figure out where the other class was located....I'm going to say that counts. #122edchat
A3: My CT planned a STEM unit involving planting corn to teach students about decimals. We brought in a parent who works for a farming company, and it was a great experience for everyone involved. #122edchat
A3: At my previous district, almost all of our ELA units were the same topic as S.S. I worked hand-in-hand w/ @LebensorgerSS on creating projects & assessments that aligned w/ both of our standards & topics. #122edchat
A3-I co-teach with a teacher who also co-teaches in Reading. We often talk about how some of the same skills are used in both classes. They often read stories about science, and we tie what theyโve read into our discussions! #122edchat
A4: One of the best days we celebrated last year was the March for Science w/ @USCIOchicago. Six of my Ss carried the banner & led 40,000+ people in support of science research & education. 1 even spoke at the rally -
https://t.co/CaQhDXKfV3#122edchat
A4: Working in a culturally diverse school, teachers like @MrsAbuRabah and @MsRazikELA help us to recognize needs, be intentionally inclusive, and honor our students' traditions. #122edchat
A4: I think my favorite is Computer Science Education week and #HourofCode because I think every person should experience coding! I love teaching #csdiscoveries from @codeorg#122edchat
A3 Our teachers do a great job at blending learning across multiple areas. This engages students, captures their curiosity, and honestly makes teaching exciting.
#122edchat
A3 I used to teach a Whale unit. We integrated science, math and ELA. Ss would research a whale and be the class expert. We would measure and compare the types of whales Then graph our data. We would also do hand-on lessons about adaptations and feeding methods #122edchat
A2: In special education, I promote challenge by always requiring students to revise and resubmit, learning from their mistakes. Nothing is ever perfect. I select Focus Correction Areas so students know what to focus on and what will be assessed. #122edchat
A4: As a school, we do a great job celebrating events like 9/11 & veterans day. Ss show remembrance & respect for survivors as well as those who lost their lives. The veterans day assembly is always a special time! We invite current/former veterans& show our gratitude! #122edchat
A4- We discuss 9/11, Pearl Harbor Day, Martin Luther King etc. For 9/11 we read a first hand account and as a team we rotate through various activities. We look at the art and photos, compare FDR's Pearl Harbor speech to Bush's speech #122edchat
A4: I think I have mentioned this before. A sillier celebration I have is celebrating a hard week of work on Friday by occasionally blasting "Friday" on the speakers between classes. #122edchat
A3: thematic units work well in foreign language. In our Health and Wellness unit, students had lots of background knowledge that made reading #authentic articles in Spanish on #stress, #diet#exercise#emotions much easier because of many cognates #122edchat
A4: When I was in the classroom directly I didn't celebrate any holidays for the most part. We celebrated kids... successes, birthday, breakthroughs, etc.
#122edchat
A4 The heaviest units in my 7th and 8th grade history classes are about social justice. From Slavery to Civil Rights. From Brown v Board of Ed. to LQBT laws of today. #122edchat It's emotion driven!
A1 Recognizing students for ALL successes....big and small! Class cheers, class claps, high fives, hand shakes, privileges, whatever gets them to smile! #IHMarchMadness#122edchat
A3 I don't teach Science. We have combined math and language in our Bloxel Builder Missions calculating the value of characters we created for our game #122edchat
A4: I would love to make this a goal of mine! There is so much to be learned through recognizing and celebrating holidays from other cultures or different important days of history. #122edchat
A3. In STEM, we do projects that cover a multitude of areas in in science, math, engineering, and technology. In some of our projects we can cover more than one area depending on what were doing! #122edchat
A3 Science shout out to Einstein and Hawking. Science and math go together like PB and jelly. Graphing, formulas, measuring...so much more. I love doing math in science and having kids make connections. #122edchat
A4: Last month Ss learned about Black History Month in Soc. St. Ss are learning about La Feria de San Marcos, a cultural celebration of my home state in Aguascalientes in Mexico. Learning about other Spanish speaking countries has its perks #122edchat
A3: #PBL not only incorporates cross-curricular learning, it is also highly engaging. Last week, some of my 3rd and 4th grade Ss presented recommendations to welcome new students to our school council. #122edchat#BIEpbl has great resources!
A3: When I taught 7th grade history, Ss had a culminating project for the Middle Ages where they acted as a knight in training. They had to complete a task in each academic class and their teacher "signed off" on their shield. We had a ceremony to dub each S a knight. #122edchat
A5: THIS IS HUGE! Ss need to know first that it's ok to make mistakes (many of them!) & ask questions! They also need to understand learning is a PROCESS.. they don't have to be fast at it or get it the first time! Everything in life takes practice! That includes Math! #122edchat
A5: Celebrate ALL wins. I sat with a teacher during plan on Tuesday trying to resolve a class sync issue with @Newsela. It took 15 minutes, but she got it! We cheered loudly and she left feeling like she could take on the world. Same happens with kids. Celebration=key. #122edchat
A5: When you talk about your strengths & weaknesses, use growth mindset language "yet" "working hard at__" or "training my brain". When Ss say they are bad at something, help them reframe their thinking & language. #122edchat
A5: I'm guilty of saying this, even in front of my students. In order to boost confidence, we need to show Ss that math crosses boundaries & exists in many places. So many of my Ss succeeded w/ balancing equations & were shocked when I confirmed that it counts as math! #122edchat
#122edchat A3 We were fortunate to have Philo Barnhart & Charles Moisant visit our school. Mr Barnhart is the creator of Ariel from The Little Mermaid and has worked on other Disney animations. Brought together SS and art. SS focused on the rebirth of animation. Art: drawings.
A4 I have not always been the best about sharing special days before. In the past few months, I have been more accustomed to how others celebrate them. I will now try to find a daily special event that we can use to make learning more fun. Always looking for ideas. #122edchat
A4: We celebrate Arbor Day because it is state mandated in social studies. We also celebrate Dr. MLKJr.., the Presidents Lincoln and Washington, Veteran's Day and Memorial Day. I like April Fool's but this year it lands on Sunday, so none of that craziness #122edchat
A4: We do a 9/11 and Veterans Day remembrance as a school. Ts also recognize other historical events. Pi Day is always fun! I would like to do this more school-wide. #122edchat
They've asked me so many times if we can find another way to connect with that class again - suggesting that we both work on a math problem or something - it is amazing to see them so excited & engaged! #122edchat
A5. Destroy the notion of the โmath personโ. Itโs such a damaging concept. Also stop pushing for speed in math. Math is about flexible, creative problem solving, not about being a human calculator. #122edchat
A5- I try to help the kids feel confident because they are way better at Math than me. I try to create opportunities for the kids to have successes which builds confidence. #122edchat
A5.1: Teaching skills like perseverance, focus, diligence, etc.. within the math curriculum is also so important! Ss with these skills excel in learning! #122edchat
A5: Continue to model and share examples of a #growthmindset and the vital ability to #failforward. The most successful people are those that fail the most. Failure simply lights the spark of #inspiredcreativity!
#122edchat
A4: Every day on our Bell Ringer I list a holiday; some are silly & some are serious, but all real! We also celebrate "National Poem in your Pocket Day" and Shakespeare birthday in April! #122edchat
I'm realizing more and more how similar it is to science - helps me when discussing with students why they need math when they come to my room! #122edchat
Q5: I try to start with a simpler problem to help build success momentum, talk through the problem with students but stop just short of the answer. I want them to get the final answer on their own to prove that they can do it. And then celebrate! #122edchat
A5 Read @joboaler Mathematical Mindset. Great read, lots to think about in regards to how math is taught. Speed is not the goal, fluency and proficiency should be! #122edchat
A5: Though I teach history, I also teach a 35 minute micro block for math. I use real world examples (ex. last week they went online looked at menus and ordered meals for their families and calculated tax and tip). Giving them something familiar made it better! #122edchat
A5: Itโs about teaching students the importance of growth mindset. We teach students #7habits and try to focus on positive language. Instead of โI canโtโ we foster โI willโ and have students focus on how #122edchat
A4: We use events like 9/11 and our Veterans Day assembly to show support for our country. We also acknowledge Martin Luther King Jr. day, Black History Month, Women's History Month & Hispanic Heritage Month with themed activities. #122edchat
Thanks for the conversation in #122edchat tonight! I hope you all will join me tomorrow night in #waledchat at 9pm when we reflect on strengths and growth areas! Q's are right here: https://t.co/r9sHD6dUb0
How about a FREE #122edchat sticker? Did I mention, they are FREE? What if we threw in a nice, encouraging, hand written note with quasi-life changing stories? Fill out this form and a #122edchat associate (me) will take care of the rest: https://t.co/95V8jgMRiW. #betheone#tlap
A5 Rather than encouraging students to feel confident, we can teach them to persist even when they lack confidence. Thatโs the R in EMPOWER - Resilience.

A4 We are in MA, so Thanksgiving is a must. I use resources from Plimoth Plantation. They have materials from both perspectives. We also read about MLK Jr., Kwanzaa, Hanukkah, Christmas. We also celebrate our Veterans with a Spirit of America parade on Flag Day #122edchat
A4 International Talk Like A Pirate Day, National Backpack Awareness Day, National Smile Day, and New Years to name a few. All incorporated into my lscience lessons. #122edchat
A5: Take away the stigma of being afraid of not knowing the answer. Sometimes you learn more not knowing something than when you know it. Try and see what what happens; you might surprise yourself! #122edchat
A5: Find their strengths & meet them at their level! They want to do more once they experience success. Let them be successful no matter what level they are at & then challenge them further! Mistakes are always welcomed! #122edchat
Thank you to our incredible hosts, @MillerMathSMS and @mrstbauerly! What a great way to celebrate the power of math, productive struggle, and my number one guy, Albert Einstein. #122edchat
A5: I like to monitor how Ss react to wrong answers. I emphasize that real learning comes from making mistakes. One of my favorite phrases is "That's a good wrong answer" because we learn from mistakes and do so in a learning environment where students feel safe. #122edchat
A4: Ss are also inquisitive about religious holidays that are celebrated, so I use that as a teachable moment to expose Ss to cultural and religious differences. #122edchat
Today made me realize how important it is to care. My former teachers always had my back and supported me 110 % of the way. I am going to send an email of gratitude to 17 former teachers. #tlap#kidsdeserveit#teachermyth#122edchat
A5: The only way you can fail is if you don't try. Give it a go and you will be surprised with what you know. If you say you will be bad, you will be bad only because you said you would be. Self-fulfilling prophecy! #122edchat
A5 For others to be comfortable in learning, they must feel in a safe space to make mistakes and ask questions. We need to make sure that grades aren't cemented with one chance. If learning is a process, if mindset is to change, we need to adapt our own practices. #122edchat
A5 Build their confidence, let them know you appreciate the strategies they've tried to solve a math problem. Share different strategies other students tried #122edchat
Thanks heaps #122edchat . So many great ideas! Now to get that degree so I can get into the classroom! It's great to see twitter being used so well for collaboration. We are in this together!
A5. When I work with Ss, I get them to say, "I can do it." These are very important words for a Ss to start believing in themselves. We start slowly in teaching them little tricks that will help them and gradually they begin to fly and gain confidence and achieve suc #122edchat
A4: Every day is special in kindergarten. We try to celebrate a success each day and create an extra memorable experience on special days. #IHMarchmadness#122edchat
A5: The first step for kids to believe in themselves is for us to believe in them. The second step is for them to believe in themselves. They will rise with the correct and effective scadfolding. #122edchat
A5: Spread a growth mindset. Math is all around us and accessible to everyone. It's part of our world. I hate to hear Ts or Ss doubt their ability and say "I am not a math person". We all can be! #122edchat
Second chance opportunities are essential for students to feel successful. They have to be given opportunities to learn from their mistakes. Otherwise, they may not be able to identify where they want wrong, and then no learning has occurred. #122edchat
A5: I am so guilty of this! ๐คฆ๐ปโโ๏ธ. It's ok to let students know you struggle and it's ok for them too, but it's important to teach perseverance and that you (they) can be better! #122edchat

A5. I tell Ss that I always thought I was bad in Math. I failed a term of Algebra in MS. I just needed to understand the concepts behind the math to solve the problems. So I focus on the strategies more than the computation. #122edchat
A5: when I share about our math with parents in the beginning of the year I often hear about their concerns about helping with math. I let them know that they have a ton to add if they just show perseverance. #122edchat#IHMarchmadness
I make Ss success visible and consistent. Every month we look at our data and celebrate growth. Every week we look at scores and work on individual and group successes. #122edchat
