#BadgeChatK12 Archive
#BadgeChatK12 was founded in December, 2014 by a group of educators who are passionate about credentialing learning and achieving. While there are thousands of us around the globe issuing badges to learners, there was not yet a regular twitter chat for those of us in the K-12 space to gather for learning and sharing about badging. After reaching out to leaders in the field (like the good folks at Mozilla and The Badge Alliance) for their thoughts, #BadgeChatK12 was born.

We want to hear your thoughts on earning Badges in the Library. Plz include in your tweets
Welcome to ! Let’s get to know each other. What do you teach? Where are you? Do you use badges or just curious?
Tom from So Cal. Pilot program for AP Span Badges for next year. STOKED ABOUT IT!
Hi! I'm Amy, a Director of Prof Growth in SoCal. I'm curious about badges & have been on the Voxer chat for a bit.
Don in Canada. I want a badge for surviving winter
Hola Amy! Glad you could join us this week!
Good afternoon ! PDLN from Santa Barbara here - we offer online, self-paced PD w/ digital badges for educators.
Awesome! Looks like several folks here for the start of a lively chat about Library Badges. Question 1 on the way...
Joe, math & STEM coach from Palo Alto, CA. Have used badges when teaching 2nd & 5th. Now use badges in PD.
We use the format Q1 (Question1) - A1 (Answer1). Please use accordingly
Hi Mary, Bus Ed T from CT - multi-tasking tonight so most likely just lurking :)
I'm just exploring how we might use badges in PD. Would love to connect.
Q1: What are examples you’ve seen or ideas you have for Library Badges?
What are AP Span Badges? https://t.co/nsfNVLJwTD
Tom from So Cal. Pilot program for AP Span Badges for next year. STOKED ABOUT IT!
Yes, let’s do. There are a few coaches & TOSAs that use badges. Will get you connected.
A1: Badges for reading a series of books, or award-winning books, writing reviews, or participating in
I think we can arrange for that
We'd love some images of snow as the evidence:)
Love these! Also, Book Spine Poetry! https://t.co/Jg5VswCVUf
A1: Badges for reading a series of books, or award-winning books, writing reviews, or participating in
I would love to hear more about your PD badges! Do teachers respond well to them? https://t.co/SCOnHyTdmj
Joe, math & STEM coach from Palo Alto, CA. Have used badges when teaching 2nd & 5th. Now use badges in PD.
My school has approved a pilot program for digital badges starting next year with my AP Spanish course.
I know a lot of people will want reading badges, but I would like to see some research badges! https://t.co/QR9l2nK3Wm
Q1: What are examples you’ve seen or ideas you have for Library Badges?
A1: I saw a Badge system at a public library that credentialed students' skills in 20+ areas
Awesome to have with us. For the folks interested in PD Badges, her Worlds of Learning site is the bomb!
A1 Early example: Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) -PD badges 4 librarians who demoed ability to serve youth
Gregg from Modesto, CA. Proj Coord, Ed Tech for COE. Used badges when I was in classroom. Looking to use it for trainings now.
A1: At a school library, badges are used for Ss to know how to return books, check out books, …
A1 Librarians are often behind badging initiatives - fits well with digital citizenship, autonomous learning
Loving this convo! Feel free to linger on question 1 as we move on to the second question...
A1: Maybe badges for librarians who successfully integrate tech into their libraries and curriculum.
Q2: How might Librarians be ideal catalysts for school-wide Badging?
A2: Librarians house the connections between all classes/ content areas! They can be the center of badges!
Librarians can work with students in helping them find resources to master subject matter to earn badges.
Friendly reminder to use the hashtag so everyone sees your tweets:)
BAM! Love this idea of Librarian as hub btwn all contents https://t.co/uWYoa5tCu5
A2: Librarians house the connections between all classes/ content areas! They can be the center of badges!
A2: Librarians are most often in contact with all school teachers in some sort of PLC, great to be the go-to-person
Typically work with the every student - this could be a testing ground before full school or classroom implementation
Thanks! I think we need to help people make these connections more often.
A2: Librarians often have a unique snapshot of Ss needs that others don't and in Elem see most/all on a reg basis
A2 Librarians are among the first if not the first to get things started with ... in their DNA
A2: At our school, I'm the librarian/tech guru, so would be the most likely candidate!
YESSSSS! Librarians are so underutilized for their institutional knowledge! https://t.co/KB26fyS7lO
A2: Librarians are most often in contact with all school teachers in some sort of PLC, great to be the go-to-person
I just wish my teachers would use my expertise more!! I have so much to give!
A2: expanding on point, librarian knows most ss in bldg, can conceptualize classroom connections from them
How can we help Ts harness this resource?! What a gift! https://t.co/kuA2bliqNB
I just wish my teachers would use my expertise more!! I have so much to give!
A2: Librarians can act as the Steve Nash of badges by assisting Ss in connecting them to resources to master specific content.
A2 Librarians are able to think in depth and in breadth and have good understanding of taxonomies
Librarians could offer badges to students after demonstrating they've mastered research and/or specific databases.
This is a huge one Don! Since we have a lot of 1st timers tonight, can you expand on "taxonomies"?
Nice!! Make sure you plan to share your own experiences during the open poster sessions!
I sometimes wish our librarians would B more descriptive of what they can help with
Might we say librarians provide "and 1" value that increases the effectiveness of the learning community?:)
Q3: What value propositions (eg access/opportunities/rewards) might Librarians be able to present to Badge earners?
1 way is to give physical badges for Ts to hang on their doors. Promotes interest from colleagues
Good point. We need to articulate what our strengths off/ what we can offer.
Yes! Totally into the the NBA playoffs so that is what led to that analogy! Good add-on! https://t.co/ymvrs7as0C
Might we say librarians provide "and 1" value that increases the effectiveness of the learning community?:)
X of badges and entered in to a drawing for a prize.
A3: I think about arranging author chats via Skype; must earn Badge to apply for seat in the chat
. Taxonomies=systems for classifying stuff; could be knowledge, or... skills. Important for developing badge systems
A3: What if earning Librarian's DigCit or Chromebook Safety Badge were pre-req for being able to take device home from school?
If there are physical badges, students who wear them can get priority access
A3: Late to the conversation, but our badge platform allows for a points store where students redeem points earned for prizes.
Brag Tags are good physical rewards...cute and cheap!
For anyone who doesn't know April, her district has issued >100,000 student Badges!!! https://t.co/tQrJm7zzi3
A3: Late to the conversation, but our badge platform allows for a points store where students redeem points earned for prizes.
Not related to these Qs but it would be great if we could get local public libraries to work with schools on badges.
How do you fund store for rewards?
We're on it! APS has formal Badge partnership with Aurora Libraries, working on others!
A2 More: badge frameworks like ISTE are an example of skills taxonomies. Others: C21, etc.
We actually check devices out to the parents, so how about the parents earning the badge at the training?
Love that you are doing this! We've talked about it and stoked to know others have already started https://t.co/b9HcPvwXHB
We actually check devices out to the parents, so how about the parents earning the badge at the training?
I’ve found that prizes def help get Ss motivated. Many then get to the point where they’re intrinsic
Fantastic idea. Add Internet safety but also extended to in-house computers. No comp usage until badges complete
So cool to have so many new folks join this week! Last question...
Q4: What are your takeaways from this week's chat?
That would be great so the parents can serve as role models for the students too. https://t.co/BAN9TiNLQB
We actually check devices out to the parents, so how about the parents earning the badge at the training?
A4: There are great resources out there & I have a lot to learn! Thank you all for sharing!
what kinds of prizes can be redeemed
A4: Someone else has probably already thought of any idea I'm excited about:)
I never thought of involving libraries in the badging. Great questions this week. So much learning every week
Look at commun. badging. We plan to launch a , with county libraries issuing
Right?!?! Also gets at valuing *all* stakeholders as well as modeling
What are some places to house and earn digital badges?
are students gaining badges in addition to regular school credit or will badges extended learning
that's always the challenge-you put great stuff together, doesn't get used, disappointing
ASB, PTA, and bus. partners fund prizes in the pts store. Not all prizes need $. HW pass, disc. football tix.
A4: The librarians are ideal hubs for human connectivity and often sitting there just wishing we'd involve them!
That is frustrating.Sometimes I think people need 1:1 intros for support.
Students will be allowed to substitute badge activities for regular assignments of similar nature
Great question! There's different right answers depending on the Badge creators:)
we are modeling after LRNG, but are not a partner with them at this time.
The idea of extra credit was discussed but I feel it's not appropriate for AP.
I worry about priority access. Don’t want any negative social effects.
For lower levels, I would consider Extra Credit for SOME but not all of the badges.
Thanks to all the OG chatters, our new friends and of course to the lurkers, we value you! Great chat everyone!
Perhaps it can be a way to train others. Improve collective learning.
In the industry space, training is exactly where we're seeing this
Good idea. Maybe those who become experts can help librarians train.
Ss are most interested in food. Gift cards, school spirit gear and disc. to school events.
This is on our plan for next fall! badges = enhanced internet access for Ss.
Maslow's hierarchy in action... 8-> https://t.co/CMay0SeaMk
