A1 Allowing students to 'make' something for learning gives them the opportunity to dive deeper into a topic, explore interests, and learn use materials in a new way. #moedchat
A1) I get angry, restless, and downright annoyed when I stop making things. Many kids feel this way too. For some people in the world, it's how we process our thoughts. Necessary, like breathing. #moedchat
A1) Making 'stuff' is cool, but I like the way making empowers kids. Reinforces that they don't just have to accept things the way they are - they can improve things and create things to make the world better. #MOedchat
I did a cardboard engineering summer session. We made Google Cardboard. A student who was typically disengaged academically out-designed me. I was not surprised. Made it a big deal on twitter. #moedchat

A2 - All of them! Really enjoy making for math/science. Also love to add blogging or website development to show off the things Ss are making. #MOedchat
A3 Enjoy many types of making: circuits, graphic design, stop-motion video, 3D printing, sewing, coding, building both physically and virtually. #moedchat#makerED
A3) I enjoy seeing what kids make with blocks like Legos, or LincolnLogs. I love seeing my kids make with anything and watching their courage and fortitude grow is the most exciting. #MOedchat
Probably whatever we're doing at the moment. This week, coding is my favorite & then as we build our #GingerbreadSTEM communities, cardboard is my fav. Really depends on the students and how engaged and creative they are as they continue to amaze me everyday. #moedchat#lovemyjob

LOL a kid once told me, "Everything is your favorite, you always say that." I must sound a little like Elf at times, but it's true, I like it all. #moedchat
A3: Although I haven’t done it yet, @brettellisred is REALLY solid with the 3D printers, and our students are well on their way! It’s very interesting. #MOedchat
A4) When you're creating something by hand, you're invested in it. You own it. It's yours. When you're filling out a worksheet, it will always belong to someone else, even when your name might be on it. #Moedchat

A4: I had a reserved girl who was on the autism spectrum. Academics were challenging. Saw and PVC came out she walked up. I made chocolates, she jumped in & picked up on my workflow immediately. Built an aquaponics in our fishtank, she watched it daily. Plants, same. #moedchat
My handwriting is terrible, but my handwork is far better. I've been working on something for @brettellisred for weeks now and I'm not satisfied with the small nuances of cuts and things. I'll write a note in barely legible writing and move on. #foodforthought#moedchat

A4: It’s night & day. Although I would relate this to anybody. Most people in general are more infatuated with making/creating, rather than participating in the examples given. This even relates to teachers at PD. We stayed engaged while creating w/ #PDInPJs last week. #MOedchat
A3. One medium I set a goal to learn deeply this year was @BloxelsBuilder. I’ve understood it basically for a few years, but I’m currently learning its complexity alongside four middle grade girls in my STEAM Club #moedchat
KV! 👋
When students “do” learning with just words—written or typed—with no other sense/emotion stirred, they will likely not remember it. Learning is multi-sensory and learning is emotional. #moedchat
@BloxelsBuilder is such an underrated tool! There is so much you can do with it and limitless possibilities kids can make! If you ever need help, let me know! #moedchat

A5) Totally agree, 100%. So many people are trying to "sell" "maker activities" but this book gets back to the HEART of what making truly, truly is. #moedchat
Q4: With making, there are so many "right" answers. Life isn't a multiple choice test. So the engagement levels are exponentially higher because there are so many more possible outcomes. #moedchat
A5 Make stuff on your own first, you will learn a lot of things that you can pass on to your kids. Also, make the stuff with the kids, they will see and be encouraged by your success and failure. #moedchat
A5: Watch Mr. Rogers or Sesame Street. You'll remember that kids naturally learn by doing and playing with the world around them. And science validates the way kids make connections. It can be scary, sure. But it's good for kids. #moedchat
I cringe when educators think it’s just a free video game console for kids. I love the adults’ reactions when I tell them it’s one of the best original creation tools in our district! #moedchat
A5) Start small. Don't feel like you need a fancy space or customized plan. Provide kids time with cardboard and tape and get out of their way. Learn from them. Then weave into your curriculum. #moedchat
Don't be afraid to learn along side the kids. And try your hardest not to answer all of their questions right away. Support them in figuring it out (I'm bad at this) #moedchat

A6) This project lasted what seemed like forever (probably about 4 months) and I can't even begin to explain how amazing it was. The direct and indirect learning was more than I could have ever "taught" https://t.co/YXVhDRdd24#moedchat
Every day we had a literal mountain in the corner that spilled over into the room. A kid said, 'We should just make it a mountain." Now "Mindset Mountain" contains our cardboard in a series of laundry baskets and large boxes and we go inside to mine when needed. #makerspace
Absolutely! They get frustrated - almost angry. But that in itself is teaching them a skill. How to de-escalate and overcome struggle. Yes, kids...a fill in the blank worksheet IS easier. But the one who is doing the work is the one who is learning. #moedchat
A6) A6) I'm proud that our students have helped design and continue to build our space. And sometimes that means they build a mountain. #moedchat#moedchat
