Gaudalupe - I have a student with your same first AND last name ... makes me take a double look every time!
hi my name is Sylvia and I teach 4th grade for CPS
Hi Katie! Do you specialize in a subject matter?
is it 6 pm MT time? I thought it was 5

Loving the variety of teachers present!
Doug HS chemistry Hudsonville, Michigan
First Question coming up ...
. A1: I used to specifically write a "hook" for each lesson that would build on something we had done before
Shane, Special Education teacher at TF South High School
Q1 How do you get your students excited about class content?
A1: Relate the topic to a real life scenario. Something they can connect with
Love "hooks" Can you describe what they look like?
. A1: Or be completely crazy - like a song, movie, or optical illusion. I loved puzzles as bell ringers, too!
A1: Music as they enter the room, Picture to get them thinking
A1: i make a lot of connections to themselves & I make them see themselves as agents of real change. https://t.co/o42BCC4IOi
A1: use of real world application problems/ video story problems, etc.
I try to mix their interests and what I have to teach together, using audio and visuals
A1: cultivate curiosity--rearrange the room, have a weird supply out, etc. They buzz about it before class even starts.
thur I will use it to check on the background confidence of the participants first using iPad
I like to start with a partner or group activity so students are talking to one another
Lots of science teachers here! We pull from articles on the Internet or in the news or even Netflix shows.
any favorite real world problems?
I try to engage them using their interests, like zombie math
Sherry Stephens 6th/7th ELA Morrill Elementary in Chicago š
. Especially because Social Studies (like current events) ties into all content areas - ELA, Math, Science...
A1: have the activity in balloons as they enter the room, immediately want to know what they are doing
Q2 Are you using Youtube in your classroom? How?
or focus on their what I notice and wonders
Lab didn't work today. So we pulled a YouTube video of the lab working correctly.
ā: I try to engage them using their interests, like zombie math ā zombies rock
oooh ... do they get to pop the balloons?
busted Indiana Jones gold idol & Oceans 11! $150 million between 11 guys is 300lbs each! Use Classkick and show me the math!
A2:Used as homework task, students expected to watch a short video act as introduction for the next lesson
balloons are fun! like popping to make discoveries, what do they do w/ the ballons? https://t.co/BZOArdWt7v
A1: have the activity in balloons as they enter the room, immediately want to know what they are doing
. We also used to use YT for all the labs that weren't possible because we couldn't afford the supplies!
A2: videos like shmoop, sites like that embed quizzes, & a "daily funny" to get them laughing & primed to learn
I used YouTube quite often to reiterate to what it is I'm teaching for them to better understand
Tweet out your favorite YouTube video that makes connections to math/science??
I use them also for reinforcing instruction. Using Patrick JMT series on 2016 SAT prep to help sts prepare
Heather third grade in Oregon
Love it! Leads me to another question - anyone asking sts to make videos to go on YouTube??
A2: YT for proposing questions, so called discrepant events. &
See new folks joining in ... so glad you are here! Great opportunity to build your online PLN!
or for showing things they'll never be able to see in real life. (The inside of living things, deep ocean)
seeing the visual is always a great way to reinforce an idea :) https://t.co/VrMToj9ipp
I used YouTube quite often to reiterate to what it is I'm teaching for them to better understand
We YouTube on the go to answer questions that may arise during class.
YES!!! specially the things they would never be able to imagine... space, or microscopic things! :) https://t.co/BhpuxslxTV
or for showing things they'll never be able to see in real life. (The inside of living things, deep ocean)
YouTube is blocked in elementary schools here (sad face!) ... anyone else have that trouble?
Anyone else also in a school that blocks most yt content on student wifi?
. Had a HS Math friend whose kids make raps of Problems of the Week dissecting the lyrics for grades
A3: simple, but I greet them at the door, every day.
I try to high five students as then enter the classroom ... that gives me a feel for how they are doing that day.
. I used to have students plot their happiness versus energy on a class scatterplot when they walked in
A3: random how ya doing during roll call and listen carefully as Ss enter.
Great idea! I can adapt that on Desmos as well - collect class data!
. Then we would pick out any outliers or people that really wanted to share before the bell rang to start
I greet them everyday in the morning.
A3: Greeting at the door,
Elementary teachers - do you use a morning meeting? The elementary school I worked in did - worked well.
A3: not as often as I should. i constantly feel a pressure 2 get the day started & squeeze in a lot https://t.co/TW3YgVid5i
Understand totally. Sometimes I try to get around to sts while they are working on the warm-up.
me!! but in CPS you just use your login info and you are ok. https://t.co/1ClJLQpzvu
YouTube is blocked in elementary schools here (sad face!) ... anyone else have that trouble?
I have also found that if you open the link at home and bring it open to school it plays https://t.co/1ClJLQpzvu
YouTube is blocked in elementary schools here (sad face!) ... anyone else have that trouble?
I often wonder if the Japanese school system is better compared to ours.
. We tried a variety of "Morning Meeting" strategies, but used end of first period to allow for latecomers
A3: Simple greetings from day 1 builds trust with students and shows you care about them.
. Do they check in with students' emotional statuses more often?
. I've seen a lot of teachers write down the class code and place it on students' group tables
I teach 4 classes a day, A/B days, so checking in with sts is important ... I haven't seen them for 48 hours.
A3: I shake every student's hand as they come in and say good morning. Then I high five them at the end of the day :)
. A4: This also allows4 last minute differentiation in terms of centers b/c you can change the code by table
ā: in regards to what where you wondering?
Great idea if you are using different activities!
. But do you have longer classes? I often felt I bonded better given the block time
yes, 90 minutes. At least we have time to get work done :)
Oops - I teach 3 classes a day ... must have felt like 4 today :)
A4: class code on front board and Ss usually are off and solving! Ss love different colors and look for my squirrel for pts.
How are you using ClassKick? In centers? Whole class activities?
. I think in those block situations, having students write reveals their feelings on all the inbetween days
A4: including an intro page in the classkick itself
My high school students LOVE the stickers in ClassKick. Amazing!
A4: Code on the board, students work at their own pace
I usually post the code on the board - encourage partners to work together on their assignments - encourage self-pacing!
. With 1st graders, I've displayed the Class Code and had "group leaders" provide peer assistance to login
we use in centers cause we dont have a whole class set & when we do whole class they share https://t.co/LPc8JHb3lJ
How are you using ClassKick? In centers? Whole class activities?
YES! That's one reason I like ClassKick so much - more able sts work ahead. Those who need help can get it.
oh it's all about the stickers! When do we get to add our own?
. What kinds of things would your students want in stickers?
I even used ClassKick on a sub day - gave stickers when I could ... freaked sts at first!
Code on the board and students also work at their own pace. Love giving the Squirrel sticker!
anything culturally popular??
. So some Star Wars stickers? I bet would be down for that :-D
thumbs up, school logo, Frown face...etc!
teaching even when im not teaching https://t.co/eMe2RiK1Fq
I even used ClassKick on a sub day - gave stickers when I could ... freaked sts at first!
I used it from a meeting and write to kids. They loved it!
Sure! If you can get around the copyright :)
squirrel for no points lol. Cuz you're nuts if you don't answer!
I think explain everything has light saber pointer. Use to record answer.
I think I like the Classkick Owl best. "Hoo"'s with me?
I'm still a sucker for a star!
Star Wars stickers would be awesome.
A5: Use questions in ClassKick, use this as your starting point for next lesson.
. A5: Always provide time for out-loud and written reflection, to accommodate all learners.
A5: still working on mastering doing closing effectively w/feedback. tips appreciated!
depends on the lesson but typically an exit slip
a5: I have a timer set on my computer, plays song over yt when 5 min are left. We all know it means time to wrap up.
Including a place in ClassKick activity to rate themselves, or to give feedback would be helpful.
Love that - need to figure out how to set up timed music in my class!
. Like feedback to the teacher on how well the lesson was presented/prepared/went?
A5: Ask students to reflect on what they have completed and what they think their next step should be.
answer the "essential question" of the lesson (the problem we are solving).
Socrative exit ticket if time permits.
And how they rate their own understanding.
A5 Ask Ss to show iPad screen on overhead projector to other Ss and have them explain work.
a5: also have exit tickets on my door--kids post on red, yellow, or green to show how confident they are on today's skill
A5: First, ensure Ss know how much time they have, then warn to start wrapping up early and provide time for reflection
A5: Quiz such as Kahoot, or flip quiz, good revision exercise, address misconceptions
Confession - I often get so involved, I forget to save time at the end for reflection!
I like the idea of students helping other students remotely with classkick
task scheduler built in to Windows can do it. I learned how on a Google search. Had a similar one on my Mac.
I'm really liking Quizziz! My sts like it too.
when we get new updates on Classkick is there a message saying what's new? General Q?
. Then start with a reflection the next day, just to drive home how important it is to make connections
We have also use Seesaw as a quick way for students to show their understanding of a lesson.
or provide a definition. We discussed evolution all day without defining it. At the end of the lesson They define it for me.
reflection time is so important! we sometimes forget because we try to squeeze so much in. https://t.co/zQt523XY00
A5: First, ensure Ss know how much time they have, then warn to start wrapping up early and provide time for reflection
Try PingPong app, you will not look back
I like the polling red yellow green idea. Would be fun to integrate class kick. Draw a circle with understanding a color.
A.2. I also record students' collab convos to post on my YouTube channel. They ā¤ļø watching themselves https://t.co/izDj4snitR
a5: another exit ticket: give me a !, ., or a ? Something that surprised them, a fact learned, or a question
posted the definition to seesaw
. The newest updates are listed in the App Store each week
that's the beauty of Classkick, shows the process. A,B,C,D multiple choice is so limited!
great idea. Use color to represent understanding! Usually I get IDK! Written across screen! Or HELP!
So many great ideas tonight, folks!
I have small groups working CK collaboratively
used to gage immediate student feedback, could be multilple choice questiosn, sketch or a long pros answer
my kids HATE being photographed or taped, weird since they Instagram and snapchat everything
Mine too! surprised they didn't even want to record their own voice!
. A6: Used to love integrating Science and Language Arts in Fantasy books like Harry Potter
. Ask students to determine plot, but then what is scientifically possible and what isn't and why
Integrating other disciplines in math takes me a lot of time - hunting for strong connections.
this was awesome tonight! Great ideas and building my pln. Look forward to next week. Gotta run!
Just started to experiment with Periscope in the classroom to give students and parents and inside look into our world.
As we are winding down, I have a general question - does anyone "Storify" these chats and post them?
I've even had to let go of some tech integration ideas because they resist recording themselves so much!
yes!! I'm integrating it with zombies because im obsessed with zombies and so are my kiddies lol https://t.co/nuU7ZXetRm
Integrating other disciplines in math takes me a lot of time - hunting for strong connections.
I want to experiment with Periscope!
I struggle in that department. š
but the truth is that in our neighborhood isn't a game, its everyday life. :( https://t.co/nuU7ZXetRm
Integrating other disciplines in math takes me a lot of time - hunting for strong connections.
That's funny. It's like mine even show out for the camera and have the best convos that way https://t.co/4OS2aUVWtZ
my kids HATE being photographed or taped, weird since they Instagram and snapchat everything
In science we integrate a lot of math and history.
the crux of lesson planning--endings and beginnings - love the many ideas shared here tonight!
I couldn't help but teach social studies and math using Cosmos episodes! https://t.co/6hCzt3OpV3
In science we integrate a lot of math and history.
A6: Keyword sort, dirt time, extension tasks catered to other disciplines.
. Yes, Classkick will Storify the chat and post in a blog post on Medium
Love seeing genius hour, maker movement take off. Not sure how to integrate it in my curriculum yet.
its dedicated reflection and improvment time, improving structure of work, students respond to feedback
for math, projects/activities like this on mathalicious help w/ integration & real-world connection https://t.co/nHXH42qmiq
Had an awesome time tonight with all of you!
Had a subscription one year ... love those resources!
not seen that before will have to have a look
Awesome chat and great ideas. Have a great night.
A6: interdisciplinary thematic units! I'm planning for zombie math, sci weather survival creative writing related
