A1. HS Level: Wish all Ss WANTED to read. Wish Ss wanted to finish a book not just rd excerpts to survive an assessment Wish they heard irony when it’s in texts. Wish there was patience w a text partic one w longer/more diff sentence syntax/struct #satchat

A1. Annotating! Interacting with the text as they read it to ask questions of the work, react to what they are seeing, and come to class genuinely interested in discovering these answers. #satchat
A1: I wish my Ss were actually reading instead of just looking at the words on the page. They can say the words, but they do not get involved in the story so no connections are made. Most cannot visualize what is happening. #satchat
A1: Overall I just want students to enjoy books. They have so much to give a reader! Beyond that, I’d like them to start to see through the story into the mechanics of writing, so they can begin to apply the same techniques and skills to their own work. #satchat
Salute to all the educators who have committed to kids that most of society has forgotten! We don’t pray for a lighter load...We pray for stronger backs! Amen! #WhyITeach#Satchat#Liberty2Learn

Q1: What do you wish your readers were doing that they currently aren't? This can include simply putting eyes to print and/or enjoying reading, as well as the "bigger" goals like using text evidence, comparing across texts, and more.#satchat
A1: I wish readers would enjoy reading more. Too often they do it bc they have to not bc they want to. I do my best to make reading fun and exciting for them. #satchat#reading
A1- Some off mine haven't yet found the joy. They see themselves as non-readers and are working to shed years of equating reading with struggle, assessment and hard work. #satchat
A1 Reading behaviors I’m working to encourage: reading more books, reading more diverse authors & genres, annotating to slow themselves down & talk back to the text, and reading with partners. #satchat
A1: I have a strong connection to struggling readers as I was one myself - I don't remember reading a full chapter book until 6th grade, and even then - - I want kids to find books they can relate to & just enjoy for once #satchat
A1: I'd like to help my readers see books as a place to turn as filler when you have a little down time inside and outside of school, "sneaky reading" as I call it. When actively encouraged, they will try it, but I want them to make this an internalized habit #satchat
Q1: What do you wish your readers were doing that they currently aren't? This can include simply putting eyes to print and/or enjoying reading, as well as the "bigger" goals like using text evidence, comparing across texts, and more.#satchat
A1: I wish learners were engaging their prior knowledge more rather than focusing on the fact that they don’t understand every word in a French text. Continual process. #satchat
You are the best teacher for those kids! I think sometimes teachers who were strong readers forget what it was like for kids who didn't find the love early on #satchat
Good morning, #satchat. Andrea from CT here -- teaching reading & writing was perhaps the most worthwhile work I've ever done. Love it when kids get so enthusiastic they come running in the next day to say, "Can you believe what happened in that chapter?!"
A1: I want students reading as much as possible in a book of their choice. I also want students to know@how to pick books that they can handle either by level, topic of interest, or genre. #satchat
A1 #satchat I think too often we're told what to read and that's not helping me develop a reading skill - You have to connect to the material before you can hone in on the skill, I think
A1 I wish my readers were able to have unlimited access to books that showcased people that looked like them from places that were like their communities doing great things #satchat
A1 I wish they had the stamina to finish a book. I find so many abandoned books sitting around the classroom. I also wish some would choose more complex texts instead of brain candy. #satchat
Q1: What do you wish your readers were doing that they currently aren't? This can include simply putting eyes to print and/or enjoying reading, as well as the "bigger" goals like using text evidence, comparing across texts, and more.#satchat
A1: I also want Ts to teach skills of cloze reading that engage Ss but maybe skill set isn’t there? Talk to the text! #booksnaps are a great way to pique interest #satchat
A1: More willing to go back over a text for evidence to support their answers or positions. My Ss seem to be reluctant to revisit the text once they've read it. They don't like quoting either. #satchat
A1: I wish my students would enjoy reading as a stand alone activity. So often they only associate reading with test taking, citing evidence, ext. #satchat
A1 I tend to stick with Newbery books that we read in whole class or as a group. I will then pick a paragraph from the reading to dig deeper on what the author was really meaning in this section? This critically thinking component is the struggle. #satchat
TOTALLY - I had and see Ts who LOVE their topics/subjects - but what about those who don't? I teach a required class, kids are there b/c they love history... #satchat
A1-It’s important for students to read for understanding and make connections between the text, previous literature they’ve read, and their life experiences. #satchat
A1: Reading. Period. But also understanding & appreciating the value reading has on their lives now and going forward. It enriches our lives more than they know and we know. #satchat
#satchat A1: I wish my emerging readers were coming to kindergarten with more lap time and bedtime story experiences. So many of my students start KNG not knowing how to handle a book, much less have a favorite because of the disappearance of regular story time within the home.
Q1: What do you wish your readers were doing that they currently aren't? This can include simply putting eyes to print and/or enjoying reading, as well as the "bigger" goals like using text evidence, comparing across texts, and more.#satchat
A1. Definitely eyes to print and enjoying it but interpreting the text instead of just copying down the words of the text when they find where a question originated. #satchat
Q1: What do you wish your readers were doing that they currently aren't? This can include simply putting eyes to print and/or enjoying reading, as well as the "bigger" goals like using text evidence, comparing across texts, and more.#satchat
A1: Always like to see readers marking up the text, annotating it as they go. Also like to see readers cite textual evidence in responding to questions. #satchat
A1: I wish they had more opportunities to read for pleasure at school and at home. The schedule seems so full! At home they may not have the right books to help them grow as readers. #satchat
A1 I wish more Ss were thinking about what they were reading. Asking questions about what they read during and after reading. I also wish they were reading for pleasure more! #satchat@ScottRRocco
Q1: What do you wish your readers were doing that they currently aren't? This can include simply putting eyes to print and/or enjoying reading, as well as the "bigger" goals like using text evidence, comparing across texts, and more.#satchat
Reading at home. Some of my Ss do not have a literacy environment. They may also have less language at home. They have many challenges in poverty and I must meet them where they are so I can start. #satchat
Q1: What do you wish your readers were doing that they currently aren't? This can include simply putting eyes to print and/or enjoying reading, as well as the "bigger" goals like using text evidence, comparing across texts, and more.#satchat
A1: I would love to see more Ss reading for the pure enjoyment of it. Classroom Ts and the media specialist can have a tremendous impact! Being a former media specialist I appreciate when I visit schools where the MC is so inviting that the kids don't want to leave! #SatChat
A1: Reading has so many forms: audio, print, digital, graphic, multimedia... I wish each student would find a form s/he loves and enjoy it for enjoyments sake! #satchat
A1. I want students to apply high order cognitive skills (analysis, synthesis, reflection, etc.) independently in order to think critically about a variety of texts. #satchat
Absolutely! Choice in reading is so important! Browsing at a book store or library is so enjoyable, and finding a book you are truly interested in is exciting. Why would be make those choices for students? #satchat
A1 I wish my readers were using reading as a means to build on to knowledge they already have and to expand their thinking in terms of critical analysis (What does this existence of this text in the world mean about the world and me?) #satchat
A1) I would love to see Ss to know and understand the importance of reading various generes. I would love the see book chats..Family book chats..#satchat
A1: I wish students would take more time to read. I feel like kids these days don't really understand the true happiness a book could bring you. #satchat
I don’t think the problem is the kids are not reading ...I think the problem is they are not reading what we want them to read ... I have kids who read all kinds of gaming stuff but that isn’t standards based in Social Studies #satchat
A1: More willing to go back over a text for evidence to support their answers or positions. My Ss seem to be reluctant to revisit the text once they've read it. They don't like quoting either. #satchat
A1: Since I'm out of the classroom I will speak to my prior experience & my own kids- I wish they would advocate for the types of books they want to read. I think they feel like they have to read what they are told in school which does not equate to passion. #satchat
Sorry to be missing #satchat this morning - heading out to present about our awesome community involvement at the @NJEA Priority Schools Statewide Conference! Feeling extra @grice_htsd proud!
Seriously, vocab can be a huge deterrent to reading -- if I don't know the words, I'm going to HATE reading -- if I HEAR the word, I'm developing that skill too #satchat
I want my students to read because they love reading rather than just because someone is telling them to read. I want students to get so engaged in a book that they can't put it down. #SatChat
If I see someone from WI I have to say hello. Because that is what we do! I grew up in Wausau and taught my first four years in McFarland. Now I am in Boise! #GoPack#satchat
I wish our readers would simply choose to read (rather than use social media). Strike a balance. So much to learn about themselves by reading a great book! #satchat
A1: I would just like to see them reading for pleasure. I have so many emerging readers that have not found any joy in books yet and its my goal to help them find it! They don’t see enjoyment as a worthy purpose. #satchat
Q1: What do you wish your readers were doing that they currently aren't? This can include simply putting eyes to print and/or enjoying reading, as well as the "bigger" goals like using text evidence, comparing across texts, and more.#satchat
A1: More willing to go back over a text for evidence to support their answers or positions. My Ss seem to be reluctant to revisit the text once they've read it. They don't like quoting either. #satchat
A1: I wish that every kid would find their own JOY in reading. The one thing that turns them into a reader. Whatever it may be: Potter, Wimpy Kid, Captain Underpants... For me it was sports magazines, but I was encouraged to read them anyway. #satchat#4OCF
A2. The ability to distinguish credible sources from non credible sources. To quote a particular politician (himself notorious for the latter): "real news" from "fake news." #satchat
Q2: Think of the skills we want to empower each and every student with as they venture out into the 21st century. What is crucial in building "real" readers in today's world? What reading skills will our students need most to go on to thrive in later life? #satchat
A1: I wish my students were encouraged to read independently; I wish their independent reading choices were valued & validated by their teachers #satchat
A1 I'm a 6th grade ELA teacher, and I wish more readers would be so excited to pick up a book that they'd turn to the page and not the screen... I want my Ss to have reading endurance, and experience getting lost in a deep and complex story! #satchat
Q1: What do you wish your readers were doing that they currently aren't? This can include simply putting eyes to print and/or enjoying reading, as well as the "bigger" goals like using text evidence, comparing across texts, and more.#satchat
#Satchat I agree reading is reading it doesn't matter where the text comes from ~ students still need to understand the content and use what they've read
A1: Biggest thing I see as a student is that even at the college level students are just not reading materials before class (myself included) due to working, busy schedule with lots of classes, laziness, or lack of interest #satchat
A1 Truly I wish my readers were able to read for joy. I teach at a school where reading mastery is very low and kids are taught a very formulaic way to think about reading and learning to read. #satchat
A1: I want students reading as much as possible in a book of their choice. I also want students to know@how to pick books that they can handle either by level, topic of interest, or genre. #satchat
A We should discuss the impact of digital technlogy in every classroom & nearly every household and what that's done to students' attention span & reading skills. I witnessed a tremendous decline in how much kids were reading when I taught in 2003 and then again in 2011. #satchat
Q1: What do you wish your readers were doing that they currently aren't? This can include simply putting eyes to print and/or enjoying reading, as well as the "bigger" goals like using text evidence, comparing across texts, and more.#satchat
Absolutely! There are some great structures out there for beginning annotations as well. When I taught 6th, we called it leaving footprints or signposts and modeled with picture-type books. #satchat
A2 The most crucial skill isn't a skill, it's the love of reading for fun and for learning new content, whether from a book or a blog or an article or a tweet. #satchat
Q2: Think of the skills we want to empower each and every student with as they venture out into the 21st century. What is crucial in building "real" readers in today's world? What reading skills will our students need most to go on to thrive in later life? #satchat
Absolutely! Choice in reading is so important! Browsing at a book store or library is so enjoyable, and finding a book you are truly interested in is exciting. Why would be make those choices for students? #satchat
#satchat A2:
In #physics, indeed in all #STEM, we must present more opened-ended, context dependent problems to support actual reading and understanding.
#iteachphysics
A1-part2 I also want to foster a lifelong love of reading, and build Ss skills at self-selecting books so that they can easily find titles they love without me there to scaffold in the future! #satchat
A1: Many answers to this have focused on students loving to read—all the more important that we help develop the skills necessary to be proficient readers. Proficient readers love reading! #satchat
Agreed, Dennis! I believe lots of students read a lot online (and learn some pretty interesting stuff in the process). Let them read and have choice in the process! But we must not forget to teach and guide, as part of the process. #satchat
A2: Students need to see the writing for what it is and respond accordingly. Is this giving me directions? Providing entertainment? News? Then they need to go deeper. Is this factual? Trying to change my opinion? How is the writer trying to influence or impact me? #satchat
A1: wish our Administrators, teachers and librarians welcomed more Ss voice in choosing titles and genres They want to read. Ss know what they like. #satchat
Q2: Apply the same skills needed to "read a room" to reading a book: unpack (body) language, contents of setting, quality of character, commentary, subtext, & ultimately value of association #satchat
A2. Evaluate the credibility of the source. Many fall for click bait headlines in social media or they attempt to research something and it comes from a company with an agenda rather than something presenting both sides of an issue. #satchat
Q2: Think of the skills we want to empower each and every student with as they venture out into the 21st century. What is crucial in building "real" readers in today's world? What reading skills will our students need most to go on to thrive in later life? #satchat
A2: Reading a wide variety of text types, and understanding that there are many different purposes for reading. We focus on the academics connected to reading too much. Too much annotating not enough reading for the sake of reading. #satchat
A2: It's so important, after reading itself, to be able to be critical about what you've read. Do I agree or disagree with this? How do I feel about what I've just read? What do others have to say about this topic? #satchat
A2 Beyond basic comprehension, “real” 21st century readers take other people’s perspectives (authors, characters, other readers), discern narrator reliability & author biases, and use their imaginations to visualize better worlds so they can take part in solutions. #satchat
A2: I think readers should learn about the digital opportunities that are offered for readers. For example, Kindles are great for not only reading, but if you don't know a word you can always look it up on the internet. #satchat
A1: Reading for fun! I get so happy when a student tells me about a book they’ve read that wasn’t part of a school assignment. I maintain a bulletin board in my school called “Looking for a Good Read: Try these...” with the hopes that even a few students might. #satchat
A2 Readers must learn how to decipher new information and learn how to use this information to develop new skills that they currently do not have. You have to build your background knowledge to solve problems that you are experiencing. #satchat
A2: Reflecting on their reading and making text to text and text to self connections. One of our SpEd teachers was reading a piece about the Franks with students and had them connect the idea of a safe haven and tolerance to the school environment. #satchat
A2: Reading people, with all of the school violence lately people tend to not read people the right way and leave them out or bully them and do not extend an open hand to ask them what is wrong or just sit next to them and talk to them because they seem different #satchat
a2| Ss will need comprehension for a skill. Interest in various texts/genres is essential as well. Ensure they're engrossed in what they desire. #SatChat
Q2: Think of the skills we want to empower each and every student with as they venture out into the 21st century. What is crucial in building "real" readers in today's world? What reading skills will our students need most to go on to thrive in later life? #satchat
This is important. If students are just reading the words, not thinking along the way, they are not going to be engaged with books and experience the joy or reading. #satchat
A2 Ss need to be able to think critically about what they read. To really analyze the text and digest the info. This is what builds comprehension! #satchat
The biggest thing I see that my own Ss need is grit when reading. I want them to realize that just because it is different or harder than usual (say Shakespeare) does not mean they CAN'T read it and shouldn't mean they WON't read it. Grit. #satchat
A2: We need to teach readers how to locate the important parts of what they are reading. We need to show them how to be effective note takers too. #satchat#sketchnote#BigIdeas
#satchat first thing that has to happen is effective decoding instruction that benefits all learners! Then let them access text in the best way for them. Model thinking and make it fun!
A2: I want to inspire curiosity so that Ss WANT to find the resources to answer all of their questions. Building readers builds character, knowledge, creativity, imagination, etc. #Satchat
One thing I would struggle w/ is just the sheer volume of topics available for kids... enter MEDIA SPECIALISTS @EBHSMediaCenter they are the best ppl to help kids in this area! #satchat
A2 Students need to read a diversity of texts, especially nonfiction. They need to question the source of what they’re reading, and they must be literate across the many channels of communication that will come their way. #Medialiteracy#satchat
A2: I work with struggling readers, many who are bilingual but may be limited on vocabulary, knowing how to figure out new words and be persistent to understand what their reading is my hope #satchat
A2: If we can get them reading and thinking in the primary grades, they can apply it to anything. We have to make that reading & thinking connection! #satchat
All readers need to think critically, make connections, and communicate about what they’re reading. Building these literacy skills will serve them well in other subjects and in life. #satchat
Q2: Think of the skills we want to empower each and every student with as they venture out into the 21st century. What is crucial in building "real" readers in today's world? What reading skills will our students need most to go on to thrive in later life? #satchat
I wish S's were all reading books that helped them build knowledge about the world. At school + home.
Many don't realize the importance of content knowledge to reading comprehension. @DTWillingham captured it *perfectly* here:
#satchat#acsd18#cue18https://t.co/J1E29ltywy
I want children to select books they never thought they would love, learn about themselves and others through the titles. Reading for enjoyment has been replaced by reading for test-taking. #satchat
A1. I wish that they were using varying mediums to read. Changing it up from the visceral experience of page turning to the swipe of a device to simply interacting with the literature around them everywhere #satchat
A2: When reading fiction, I want my S's to recognize their story in the books they read to help them discover who they are and how they fit into the world around them. #satchat
A2. Young readers need to be able to reflect on what they read. AnalyIe this information and be able to use it later. This goes for both vocational and avocational reading. #SatChat
A2 Where to find good, valid, and reliable information. How to make sense of multi-step sets of directions to solve problems (HUGE skill). Reading to construct a well-infomed point of view/develop expertise #satchat
#satchat A2 Today's readers face the challenge of deciding what to read. They need to develop strategies to work through this process that meet their needs and interests.
Before students can read, teachers need to know if students are vision ready for reading. I highly recommend this book. The Hidden Link Between Vision and Learning@wendybethrosen #satchat
A2 #satchat It is crucial for student to use critical thinking skills to expand upon content and brainstorm with others. This is what leads to innovation...

The biggest thing I see that my own Ss need is grit when reading. I want them to realize that just because it is different or harder than usual (say Shakespeare) does not mean they CAN'T read it and shouldn't mean they WON't read it. Grit. #satchat
So we need to meet them where they are and challenge them to develop the full range of reading skills independent of their topic of interest. Makes sense to me. #satchat
I don’t think the problem is the kids are not reading ...I think the problem is they are not reading what we want them to read ... I have kids who read all kinds of gaming stuff but that isn’t standards based in Social Studies #satchat
YES! That is where we come in, book talking based on interest surveys. Talking to each student individually & chatting with them as they read! #satchat
One thing I would struggle w/ is just the sheer volume of topics available for kids... enter MEDIA SPECIALISTS @EBHSMediaCenter they are the best ppl to help kids in this area! #satchat
Ss need to know their opinion is valid - just b/c someone wrote something doesn't (necessarily) make them an expert - Kids need to know their voice matters on topics too! #satchat
A2. Critical analysis skills - to read & ask who wrote it & why. To wonder whose voices are centered & whose are missing. To know the importance of finding & amplifying "missing" voices. #satchat
The biggest thing I see that my own Ss need is grit when reading. I want them to realize that just because it is different or harder than usual (say Shakespeare) does not mean they CAN'T read it and shouldn't mean they WON't read it. Grit. #satchat
A2: Digital Literacy is the NEW literacy. Ss need to learn how to navigate this terrain: micro-reading, writing, and thinking are critical to their future. Think of the skills we as adults need online- and break that down into mini-lessons for the Ss #satchat
#satchat A2: They need to be able to read an expository text from multiple viewpoints, and determine quickly if it's fake news. I don't focus much on this in upper levels of French, but I'd like to create a lesson.
A2: Critical Thinking skills...build an opinion around what you are reading and support with evidence from the text. Don’t just say agree/disagree. Back it up! #satchat
Q1: What do you wish your readers were doing that they currently aren't? This can include simply putting eyes to print and/or enjoying reading, as well as the "bigger" goals like using text evidence, comparing across texts, and more.#satchat <---Repost
Work on comprehension skills beyond print... Currently teaching with a graphic novel with @OGwithTLC lots to teach related to illustrator intent, how to use images with text.. #satchat
A1: Good questions for me, as educator...What do I, or don’t I, foster when it comes to my students’ reading? Choice? Interest? Strategies? Excellent literature? Skills? BALANCE? #satchat
A2: Analyze multiple texts and understand the point of view of the author. Using that information to form their own opinion and support it with details. #satchat
Q2: Think of the skills we want to empower each and every student with as they venture out into the 21st century. What is crucial in building "real" readers in today's world? What reading skills will our students need most to go on to thrive in later life? #satchat
A2: I think we stumble when we push things on children to "help them thrive" in life. The tool (reading) matters; social engineering, not so much. #satchat#satchat

But isn’t reading to fulfill a goal the purpose of reading? Isn’t that what we are doing right now ... one tweet at a time? I read ed books to meet new goals ... heck I read for the pure enjoyment too #satchat
A2 Students need to read one article and decipher it to death several different ways. This is what reading is all about.... said no student ever. #satchat
A2. This graphic might be great for a Morning Meeting discussion? Students need to own it. Of course, they also need to love reading - it can't be forced. #satchat
Join me tomorrow morning at 8:30am EST as I guest moderate a #HackLearning chat. We'll be discussing the Guide on the Ride and how educators can make the transition from a teacher-centered classroom to a learner-centered one. #edchat#satchat
#satchat A2: I want my KNG Ss to be brave as they face possibly inappropriate expectations by Ps and Ts about when and what content they should be reading fluently by a certain deadline. Resilience, tenacity & comfort while swimming in a literacy-rich environment are needed.

A2: I hope Ts give me as many digital reading experience as possible! I think being a reader includes learning to understand social media platforms. One day of reading the President's tweets taught me A LOT! #SatChat
A2: Students must be able to not only read texts but question them. What is included? What is not? Why is it structured as it is? What have other texts on this topic had to say? #satchat
A1: One thing that I love is at student arrival I see so many kids carrying their library book or novel from class that they are deep into. It reminds me of when I would read a book and get totally lost in it! 📚#passion I want my kids to get lost in books! #satchat
A2: Digital Literacy is the NEW literacy. Ss need to learn how to navigate this terrain: micro-reading, writing, and thinking are critical to their future. Think of the skills we as adults need online- and break that down into mini-lessons for the Ss #satchat
A2 To determine for themselves, from a wide variety of input, a clear ideas about information presented and be able to clearly articulate their oponion. Separate from fact from fiction have a dialogue. #satchat
A2 Analyze to learn and gather information - Interpret point of views - Shared thoughts and feelings through reflection - Connect to self, others, and world - Reading for ENJOYMENT - The list can go on forever #satchat
I think this is where Ss become weary or confused - we need to teach them how to decipher the good from the "fake" and how to use multiple resources #satchat
A2 employers looking for critical thinking, data analysis, conflict Management, strategic thinking, strategic use of social media- reading can be couple with imagination, but needs to prepare these folks for what is really happening in the workforce. #satchat
Ss need to know their opinion is valid - just b/c someone wrote something doesn't (necessarily) make them an expert - Kids need to know their voice matters on topics too! #satchat
A2. I think Reading skills align to life skills..I'm not always going to enjoy what I read..Persistence..Do I understand the text? Persistence..#satchat
A3. We need to model what good readers do on a regular basis. And not just as a one-off activity, but as a sustained practice every week in our classrooms. Practice how to interact with new & unfamiliar texts. Literacy strategies need to be a part of EVERY content area. #satchat
Authors and genres matter, as well as studying the classics. I used to love studying Cliff notes when I wasn't totally sure about a books' material. #SatChat
A2. I want readers to have the ability to skim words to find what you’re looking for quickly. The ability to search online w best keywords and Boolean logic. Understanding words to discern truth from fiction #satchat
Q3: How do we get our students to be stamina-driven, page-turning, skill-based readers...not just the already robust readers, but the reluctant readers, the below grade-level readers, the use-to-be readers? #satchat
A2 I want my Ss to view reading as natural as breathing and necessary for survival. Books are just collections of someone’s thinking, and they await someone to converse with. Reading is liberation. #satchat
A2. Using schema and reading strategies for making meaning that work best for them. Creating their own reading identity and seeing themselves as life long learners. #satchat
It just occurred to me that learning to read as a child of color can be so taxing because in order to understand the motivations of characters who do not look like nor live like them SoC have to do double work #satchat
A2: Not sure if it is a “reading skill” or not but the ability to evaluate the validity of a source in order to form a valid viewpoint or opinion on a subject is critical particularly in an era of alternative facts & fake news! #satchat
SoC have to learn why white characters do something and then connect to the exp of those characters while in some instances forgetting or displacing their own experiences... #satchat
and knowing where and when it is appropriate to connect their own exp or the crafted understanding of a white character's exp which may be totally different from their own. This mean SoC can't even bring themselves to the reading when a text is based in dominant culture #satchat
A2. Critical analysis skills - to read & ask who wrote it & why. To wonder whose voices are centered & whose are missing. To know the importance of finding & amplifying "missing" voices. #satchat
Happy #StPatricksDay
My Nana's favorite Irish Blessing:
May those who love us, love us.
And those who don't love us, may God turn their hearts.
But if He can't turn their hearts, may He turn their ankles,
so we'll know them by their limping!
#makeitreal#satchat#tlap
A2: Helping readers acquire, learn, and discuss their own tastes in genre, author, structure, and topic helps them seek out more books they will love. #satchat
I wish students were setting reading goals and sticking to them. Goals to read a certain number of books, or to read s certain book, or to explore a genre. I wish readers used the library more - school or public. #satchat
Q1: What do you wish your readers were doing that they currently aren't? This can include simply putting eyes to print and/or enjoying reading, as well as the "bigger" goals like using text evidence, comparing across texts, and more.#satchat
Q3: How do we get our students to be stamina-driven, page-turning, skill-based readers...not just the already robust readers, but the reluctant readers, the below grade-level readers, the use-to-be readers? #satchat <---Repost
A2: Digital Literacy is the NEW literacy. Ss need to learn how to navigate this terrain: micro-reading, writing, and thinking are critical to their future. Think of the skills we as adults need online- and break that down into mini-lessons for the Ss #satchat
A2. Gleaning important information from text is a critical skill. Also, I feel that S’s need the skill set to know how to interact with various types of texts. Interacting with The NY Times requires a different set of strategies than a comic. #satchat
A2 Reading information: Ss need to be able to discern reliability of the source and sift through facts. Reading fiction: Ss need to be able to make pictures in their mind of what they’re reading, making a video with their gray matter. #satchat
A3: I brought in mass amounts of books to my classroom. Everything from classics to magazines. We read for 7 min every day and they could choose ANYTHING even studying for tests #satchat
A3: Model reading for our Ss. Get them #motivated by our enthusiasm for reading. Choose books that are related to their interests. Meet with guided reading groups to discuss books and their thoughts. Make reading fun! #satchat
A1 I wish Ss did more reading for enjoyment outside of school. I remember my love for reading started in like 3rd grade when I read The Boxcar Children in one day. 🤓#satchat
Q3: How do we get our students to be stamina-driven, page-turning, skill-based readers...not just the already robust readers, but the reluctant readers, the below grade-level readers, the use-to-be readers? #satchat
A3 Need to help them find just right books. Books that interest them. In my clas they find a reading spot, get comfy and read. Set the expectations about reading together!! #satchat
Agree - that goal hasn't changed. In my mind, the biggest challenge today is extending students' attention span to read longer texts, even in the face of digital distractions, such as short Instagram blurbs, youtube videos, and memes. #Satchat
Staggering statistics. A culture that fosters reading needs to be so rich within our schools that it resonates into our neighborhoods and communities #satchat#ILAchat
A1: If we want to develop readers we need to develop the culture where reading is modeled, shared, appreciated and valued. #satchat@TheBradCurrie@wkrakower
In reply to
@ScottRRocco, @TheBradCurrie, @wkrakower
A2: Students need to learn to stop when they don't understand something they've read and ask questions; students need to ponder and act upon statements they don't agree with .... All this can be modeled. #satchat#satchat
Students have to be able to get what they need from reading, but at the same time is technology killing reading ... there is a video for just about everything now. #satchat
I want Ss to be able to read what they want tonor need to in an efficient amount of time. I hope they can then bring out the salient points for application to work of discussion. Using books to centre a conversation is a beautiful gift. #satchat
Q2: Think of the skills we want to empower each and every student with as they venture out into the 21st century. What is crucial in building "real" readers in today's world? What reading skills will our students need most to go on to thrive in later life? #satchat
#satchat Good Morning from CT! Joining a bit late. Just returned form a walk with my dog on a very cold Saturday. My dog is happy, but I am just regaining the feeling in my fingers.
A3: Therein lies the crux of the issue. How do we do this? Work hard to connect them to the texts, build interest and help them develop strategies, but still I don't reach them all. There's no magic spell for this. It's hard work. Enthusiasm needed. #satchat
Q3: How do we get our students to be stamina-driven, page-turning, skill-based readers...not just the already robust readers, but the reluctant readers, the below grade-level readers, the use-to-be readers? #satchat
A3 Motivating students to develop richer, fuller, more purposeful reading lives means helping them connect reading to their own values instead of ours. Read how: https://t.co/qjyOOgKjGL#satchat
A3: Constant exposure to text! For the hesitant readers, struggling readers...we need to engage them in small groups so they can see the social aspect of reading and be guided with assistance #satchat
Joining late~ 😊A2~ we have to be certain to have a variety of books in our classroom libraries that reflect the diversity of our Ss 🌎here's one we use for the springboard to developing #resilience#satchat
A3- We ignite the love before honing the skill. Too often our reluctant readers are forced to endure boring books, meaningless tasks and assessment/accountability measures which do nothing to build a culture of joy and curiosity. #satchat
a2 I want readers to be asking, "Who is not or never in the story and why?" I want them to ask "Why do I never see a queer character in a text even though I have queer friends or family members?" and then question what that absence means abt the dominant culture #satchat
A3: Introducing students to the wide variety of nonfiction on niche topics they will never be assigned in class . . . this helps them to find there are books that speak to whatever their passions are. Sports, music, art, camping. Also books with visually striking content #satchat
A3 Let them read for pleasure. Stop testing them! Let them finish a book and that's it they are finished. Let them talk about what they have read if they want to. Who wants to read anything if they know they have to work afterwards? #SatChat
Q3: How do we get our students to be stamina-driven, page-turning, skill-based readers...not just the already robust readers, but the reluctant readers, the below grade-level readers, the use-to-be readers? #satchat
A3 It comes down to choice - I hated reading b/c I could never connect. If you get reluctant readers to find something they genuinely like, they'll grab on. My first chapter book was about a swimmer.. I read cover to cover #satchat
A3. Start with level appropriate student choice text. Maybe have students design their own project around it to get them interested and reading. Once they get confident, increase difficulty and offer teacher selected choices on topic. #satchat
Q3: How do we get our students to be stamina-driven, page-turning, skill-based readers...not just the already robust readers, but the reluctant readers, the below grade-level readers, the use-to-be readers? #satchat
A1 My wish is for my students to read daily, develop stamina, and eventually value reading as a key to illuminating a passion for curiosity, growth, and amazing adventures. #satchat
A2: “real” readers in the 21st century will most DEF have to read to learn, un-learn and re-learn disseminating and synthesizing relevant information necessary to problem solve, think, make and de-bug- structures that interfere with comprehension. #satchat
A3: Incorporate their interests into the classroom reading, keep high interest and varied genre texts in the classroom library. I got the Amulet graphic novel series this year and my Ss are eating it up. #satchat
A3: The act of reading isn’t going to draw them in. Sit still and stare at these lines of text. They need to come for the content. That could be story, information, fantasy, news, or Nintendo cheat codes. If they want the content, they will have motivation to read. #satchat
A3 Giving them time to read whatever they want in class and allowing them to take the books home with them. I'm also a huge fan of audio books that they can follow along with. #satchat
A3: That takes a lot of effort for some Ss. It is about developing that reading culture school wise by Ts showing their passion for literature and reading and parents creating a culture of reading at home #satchat
A3: Ask ourselves: where do they show stamina now? and why do they do it there? How can we transfer that motivation to reading endurance? I believe that answer is in CHOICE! #satchat Choice sustains my reading.
But can we also make that a conversation of how to “read” a video and compare and contrast the sources of information? #satchat for some video is a better way to gain info
A3. Choice, choice, choice. Ss need to see themselves and their own interest in what they might read. But there’s a prerequisite: Ts need to build that relationship to see those entry points. It’s work that never ends... #satchat
A3 and starting small - no harm in pulling quotes or short passages to peak their interest. While volume is important in overall development - getting that buy-in is so essential to long lasting readers #satchat
A2 - We need children who can closely read material, make connections across articles, identify solid evidence to support claims, and be able to explain this for a greater purpose #satchat
#satchat A3: In kindergarten, books must come alive! "Do" the voices, be an expressive reader, model the intonation, pace, expression and rhythm that are inferred in each text. Make students want to know how and why reading is desirable and fun!
Q3: How do we get our students to be stamina-driven, page-turning, skill-based readers...not just the already robust readers, but the reluctant readers, the below grade-level readers, the use-to-be readers? #satchat
#satchat A3 When I want to reach reluctant #readers, I remember that text comes in all forms: music, artwork, and film. It's amazing how many literary devices you can find in each, #students find it approachable, and they keep reaching.
A3 Give them choice and support that choice. Read THEIR books and have a real dialogu about the text with them. Show value in them as readers. #satchat
A2) Love of reading must start at an early age. This means getting high-quality texts in the hands of every student that they enjoy and can relate to. Enjoying reading leads to becoming a great reader. #satchat
A2: I believe, even today, there is still great value in students being ‘equipped’ with these strategies (via these questions)...
Think of the critical thinking, problem solving, communication and creativity build into student responses to many of these questions... #satchat
Join me tomorrow morning at 8:30am EST as I guest moderate a #HackLearning chat. We'll be discussing the Guide on the Ride and how educators can make the transition from a teacher-centered classroom to a learner-centered one. #edchat#satchat
A2) I would like students to use flipgrids to provide feedback. Also, to use Google Hangout to discuss with classes from different school/districts.#satchat
I worry goals are what turn students away from reading. I want teachers to bring students to library for free time. No electronics but flip thru comics, magazines, books. Half the battle is showing students what we have to offer. #satchat
A2: Critical thinking, critical thinking, critical thinking!
And this is why reading standards are spot on: S's need comprehension skills, the ability to recognize and cite evidence from texts, comfort with nonfiction texts as well as fiction.
#satchat
Provide students with opportunities to read and allow them choice about what they read. Give students access to books they love - #graphicnovels are a hit with many of my more reluctant readers. #SatChat
A3 - Choice & support, reading groups with differentiated instruction, high interest topics that lead students to products with a greater purpose #satchat
Q3: How do we get our students to be stamina-driven, page-turning, skill-based readers...not just the already robust readers, but the reluctant readers, the below grade-level readers, the use-to-be readers? #satchat
Our struggling readers need to be given the right instruction to help them progress, increase their confidence, and the drive to be part of a reading culture #satchat
The interests needs to be sparked early on, never too early to begin with reading. In the womb before, Parents who read have children who read. The home should be full of various things to choose from as well. #SatChat
A3. Choice, choice, choice. Ss need to see themselves and their own interest in what they might read. But there’s a prerequisite: Ts need to build that relationship to see those entry points. It’s work that never ends... #satchat
A3. It’s important that we help readers by providing them with books of interests on their reading level. Then foster their confidence, and then push their reading. Initiatives like READ180 & Leveled Literacy Intervention help students advance their love and skill. #satchat
Q3: How do we get our students to be stamina-driven, page-turning, skill-based readers...not just the already robust readers, but the reluctant readers, the below grade-level readers, the use-to-be readers? #satchat
A3: choice of course, in class libraries of course, but also Reader’s Workshop model and sharing with @KaganOnline strategies has helped my #fostere11 learners #satchat
A3: We must reach ALL Ss...this means knowing your Ss interests, creating fun ways to discuss books, highlighting Ss reading achievements, settings goals, etc. It only takes one amazing teacher to ignite that spark in a student! #Satchat
A2 we have to develop a LOVE of reading. We started Rise & Read this year...conversations around books, recommendations to peers have increased exponentially. #satchat
A3: I used @Flipgrid to record Ss reading to a partner. They did their BEST reading. Maybe it’s important for Ss to “see” who they are as readers. #satchat
A3. Sometimes it's modeling..Finding their interests and finding many ways to share what they've read. I know 2 who love to make posters about their books. #satchat
A2: Our students need to be critical of what they read. Have an understanding that there are many viewpoints and truth. Students need to respond to text in many ways whether persuasive, opinion, informational, nonfiction. #satchat
Yes—students should have choice in what they read. There are times we need to assign texts in class. That has a purpose too. But, would we ever say to a student -umm no sorry you can’t figure out that discount at the store. That isn’t the math we’re doing? #LetEmRead#satchat
When referring to “reading”, think about the task, are we talking comprehension? If so must it involve print, comprehension is bigger than print and can be taught with other modalities to meet students needs #satchat
A3: If you want kids to be readers you have to give them choice to read what is important to them! You have to welcome their interests! You have to hold back judgment if it's not what you love. #satchat#LivBits
A2 Ultimately I want my kids to be able to read texts WRITTEN BY & ABOUT ppl on the margins so they can get used to the work of extreme empathy. It's only by centering the exp of those othered that we truly see them/begin to question their absence/hold space for them #satchat
A3: We have to get to know them individually. We have to find out how they learn, what types of books they like, and give them opportunities to choose and read a lot! #satchat
A3 As for below grade level readers & emerging dyslexics, school systems need to administer baseline assessments for phonological roadblocks & implement research-based interventions early to pave the way.Whole mindset must change. The "Wait to fail" approach is a failure.#satchat
A3 Researchers Cambria and Guthrie suggest in order to move struggling readers forward, they need interventions which encompass six things: “creating relationships, building success, assuring relevance, fostering awareness, affording choices, arranging social goals. #satchat
A3. I think so much has to do with forcing reluctant readers to interact with text they have no desire to interact with thus compounding their frustration. #satchat
A3. Students do need to be given choice to find joy in reading about their interests, but they also need to be exposed to complex grade level texts and have classroom experiences where productive struggle is encouraged and fostered as the norm. #satchat
HUGE step on the fight against corruption. Shockwaves have been sent through the Establishment, The Deep State and Obama’s entire “Teflon” Administration.
#Justice#SaturdayMotivation#satchat#SaturdayMorning
A3: Modeling!!! Ss need to see Ts and Ps reading more. Giving choices to Ss on what they read, and stop reading passages out of the reading series. Ss need to know what it feels like to finish reading an entire book. #satchat
I was an English Ts with a master’s in English and I primarily read #digitaltexts only and I’m over 40. I find better tools to interact with the text that way! #satchat
How many innocent American lives were ruined, like General #Flynn because of Andrew #McCabe? He’s as bad as the criminals he once perused and got EXACTLY what he deserved
#satchat#SaturdayMorning
Attorney General Jeff Sessions
A1) I wish Ss would still read at home rather than just at school. I am seeing this less and less as tech continues to expand and take over. Ss can still read books on tech! #satchat
A2: They need to be able to think about what they are reading and apply that knowledge. It could mean applying information from expository or displaying empathy from narrative. #satchat
Agreed that stumble is from teaching something that professionals can't explain simply, they themselves don't understand. Albert Einstein quote in there. #satchat
Yes! Help them see connections with other kinds of texts, then draw them back to the written word. We can provide so much more context for Ss when we look at the wider array of texts! #satchat
#satchat A3 When I want to reach reluctant #readers, I remember that text comes in all forms: music, artwork, and film. It's amazing how many literary devices you can find in each, #students find it approachable, and they keep reaching.
A3: reading was a struggle for me and I got help through a tutoring and it helped but never had time appling to school work because of the amount of homework or studying I would have a night and practice/games. This was my junior year in HS taking honors and AP classses #satchat
How about making with their reading... turn what you see in your imagination while reading into a tangible, 3D expression? Better than any quiz! #satchat
It just occurred to me that learning to read as a child of color can be so taxing because in order to understand the motivations of characters who do not look like nor live like them SoC have to do double work #satchat
Reading print is a decoding task. Understanding text is a comprehension task...the latter can be taught without print. Print is not friendly for all learners #satchat
A3. Start with the WHY (how many times have we heard this lately?) Part of Morning Meeting where this is discussed and revisited again and again. Slowly developing greater purpose .. #satchat
#satchat what if students designed their own wishlist for books - I wish I could find a book that... etc. might lead to them becoming writers. That's what happened for me, I loved writing but hated reading b/c I couldn't find what I wanted #satchat
A3. Provide choice & provide access to books that celebrate Ss experience - ensure SOC aren't only represented as "oppressed," ensure native Ss aren't only represented in past-tense, ensure LGBTQIA+ Ss are seen & loved #satchat
A3: There has to be a connection & it has to be fun! The books that I read in 10th Grade English class are still some of my favorites in part because of the way @casehighprinc brought the book to life for the class! #satchat
I totally think that if a child, for whatever reason isn't interested or struggling in reading, I hate to say it, but it's School. #SatChat | That's where they initially begin learning.
A3: We have to get to know them individually. We have to find out how they learn, what types of books they like, and give them opportunities to choose and read a lot! #satchat
A3: It's all about independent reading choices - first, teachers must KNOW their students (reading levels, cultural backgrounds, interests, etc.) and then help students find great stories that speak to them! #satchat
A3 Researchers Cambria and Guthrie suggest in order to move struggling readers forward, they need interventions which encompass six things: “creating relationships, building success, assuring relevance, fostering awareness, affording choices, arranging social goals. #satchat
Motivating readers starts and ends with:
– CHOICE
– Building foundational skills early. No shock: successful readers read more!
If you love your children, make sure their school district has an EXCELLENT K–5 curriculum and tight K–3 reading intervention.
#satchat#ASCD18
A2 To be critical thinkers and question what the read! Whether informational or literary text, what is the author's message? Do you agree or disagree? Why? #satchat
A2: Critical thinking, critical thinking, critical thinking!
And this is why reading standards are spot on: S's need comprehension skills, the ability to recognize and cite evidence from texts, comfort with nonfiction texts as well as fiction.
#satchat
A3: talking about books we like, surrounding them with books and making it easy for Ss to borrow them, connected other things they like to a book, giving them time, space, and encouragement to read #satchat
Q3: How do we get our students to be stamina-driven, page-turning, skill-based readers...not just the already robust readers, but the reluctant readers, the below grade-level readers, the use-to-be readers? #satchat
A1: Setting Small goals that are attainable so that their large goals are met with more success as consistently using strategies independently with confidence. #satchat
A3 work to walk your community into the work of Nancie Atwell and her Center for Teaching and Learning School practices #satchathttps://t.co/GZZflRVKwB
Yes, yes, yes! We all say all Ss need to be represented in the bookshelves, but you’ve taken that to a deeper level of explanation. I’ll be using your words with admin. 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 #satchat
A3 You have to start somewhere so let them choose something THEY like, DON'T judge. Every genre has rich literary examples. Independent reading WITH support (look-fors) and rich discussion #satchat
A3: What makes me a robust reader is having the chance to share my thinking about books with a wider audience than just my classroom and Ts. I do A LOT of reading at home that is not valued at school. My work on #LivBitsis a home project. School doesn't care about it. #satchat
Accountabilty is questioning! Its not do this or you will fail, ask questions, expect more questions, and if you don't know them lead them to someone that does. #satchat
I know we're focused on readers, but writing is that essential twin here. I know they go hand-in-hand, but I have to say I excelled in one long before feeling comfortable in the other #satchat
#truth students need choice in their reading. The workshop model and being able to individually assign different text levels of the same text in #RazKids is a great way to personalize learning. #satchat
A3. Opportunities to get kids' hands on books. Does anyone have book mobiles anymore? Go to a neighborhood and have books for kids during Summer/Breaktimes #satchat
A4. It's been such a blessing to have an in-house literacy specialist at @OConnellHS in the person of @svulcano14. Students need EMBEDDED, ONGOING strategies, structures, and support! You can't simply tell a struggling reader to "try harder!" and expect it to stick. #satchat
A3: Maybe we teach more use of #talkingtothetext with #digital tools inside the device. I buy every book for my doctoral program online. I have access to all texts, 📝, and highlights 4eva #satchat
It just occurred to me that learning to read as a child of color can be so taxing because in order to understand the motivations of characters who do not look like nor live like them SoC have to do double work #satchat
A3b: It also depends on grade level. HS Ss at diff grade levels need different motivations as would MS Ss and Elem Ss. Choice helps, but sometimes there are texts they need to read that are challenging, and they need to choose those too. Getting them there is the trick. #satchat
A3 To encourage individual reading a) identify student interests b) expose Ss to books connected with those interests at the Ss reading levels. To increase Ss reading capacity, our Ts must demonstrate the processes for engaging, questioning, & reflecting on texts #satchat
Q3: How do we get our students to be stamina-driven, page-turning, skill-based readers...not just the already robust readers, but the reluctant readers, the below grade-level readers, the use-to-be readers? #satchat
I love doing this. I did it with an English 101 class. They thought I was crazy. But it sucked them right into the book, Heinlein's Citizen of the Galaxy. We had a great semester reading and writing off that book,.#satchat
A3: 1) We should provide insane variety for Ss! 2) Allow Ss to choose 3) Provide support all the way - from choosing texts to.....whatever they need: co-reading, audio support, peer reading, book club chats, digital books, opportunity to abandon... #satchat
Q3: How do we get our students to be stamina-driven, page-turning, skill-based readers...not just the already robust readers, but the reluctant readers, the below grade-level readers, the use-to-be readers? #satchat
Motivating readers starts and ends with:
– CHOICE
– Building foundational skills early. No shock: successful readers read more!
If you love your children, make sure their school district has an EXCELLENT K–5 curriculum and tight K–3 reading intervention.
#satchat#ASCD18
A3: I ❤️ this ? Stamina cannot start with reading. It’s woven into life. A class culture of work ethic. Chores in the classroom. Positive reinforcement. Families worked together. They worked when they were tired. Stamina was part of survival. #satchat
Q3: How do we get our students to be stamina-driven, page-turning, skill-based readers...not just the already robust readers, but the reluctant readers, the below grade-level readers, the use-to-be readers? #satchat
A3 To build readers you need to drown kids in reading! You to them and them on their own. Let them see you read. Make reading a constant activity in not just your class but in life! #satchat#ilovetoread
Yet are we as educators over reliant on print to learn? Have times changed where we need to broaden our instruction of comprehension with multiple modalities? #satchat
A3: We need to model reading, share reading through read aloud and find out what interests them and then share that interest with them. Take the time to connect with them through text. #satchat
RT or like if you believe animals deserve freedom from:
-Hunger

A3) Intense phonics instruction and doing what is age-appropriate for reading in K-3 will build lifelong learners. Without foundational knowledge nothing else can happen! #satchat
And reading in elem is not the same as reading in secondary - we have to keep working at it w/ them as Ts -- and give the variety of fiction, non-fiction... Only fiction I can stomach is HARRY POTTER :) LOL #satchat#historyteacher
In my stations Ss fill out book lists, book requests, and book reviews. We discuss that everyone likes different books and friends are great references in finding books that we may like. We also discuss that it is okay to not like a book and to explain why. #satchat
A4: We need the whole school. And we need support from home. Reading happens everywhere, so we need to nurture it everywhere. Math class, PE, the hallways, lunch room, on the weekends, summer break... #satchat
Absolutely true! Teaching S's to see the connection between the two by pointing out the moves an author makes to help readers understand is essential. #satchat
A3~ purposeful, deliberate time allotted each & every day for skill dev, book chats, partner reading and opportunities for the Ss to be the " driver" in the teaching&learning that happens in the classroom #sharedownership win/win #interestdriven#satchat
#satchat A3: Research, trial and error, and a good attitude. Internal motivation drives so many of our decisions, so, if innovative/creative skills are there, and time....we should engage those for the most reluctant readers.
A3. Offer graphic novels. It’s okay to read cereal boxes. Try #Booksnaps Allow nonfiction when that’s more interesting than fiction. It’s not about the assignment, it’s about the volume of material. Try @Flipgrid responses to reading. #satchat
Make reading meaningful, based on Ss choice, an opportunity to connect with people and hear and share opinion. Don’t stop reading to Ss. Let them hear the magic of beautiful words strung together to tell a story. Talk about books you have read as it makes sense. #read#satchat
Q3: How do we get our students to be stamina-driven, page-turning, skill-based readers...not just the already robust readers, but the reluctant readers, the below grade-level readers, the use-to-be readers? #satchat
A3: for my lowest readers I taught them to visual first and draw pics of what they were reading on sticky notes in the margin. #hooklinesinker got em #satchat
A3 #satchat Stamina is built up over time and propelled by student-generated motivation to learn more. Success with one text can spark interest and success with others. Skill can be taught but readers have to recognize how and why to apply it in ways that make sense to them.
A3: Robust readers are also a result of robust teaching. We need literacy instruction provided by excellent teachers that occurs throughout the school day, and not just within a reading “block” #satchat
Interesting... Maybe we need to provide context for the "why" around reading the paper or writing the term paper. Those acts alone do not produce strong readers and writers. Students need purpose, all the time. #satchat
#satchat A3 I want to do more research into some of the #readtoyourdog programs that are out there. Everything I have seen is about many benefits, and no down sides. #reading#books#dogs
A4 the power of classroom libraries --- kids will read when great books are staring them in the face all day long #satchat we need to devote resources to classroom libraries!!
A1. As a publication, we wish they were contributing to the articles through comments and writing for us if they have an idea in mind about making changes in education! We are open to all ideas and opinions that would make a worthy impact. #satchat
A3 stay away from programs that treat children who need scaffolded support as if they are a widget- ensure teachers have a suite of skillful practices designed to empower readers of all demographics w a focus on #weneeddiversebooks#satchat
Q2: Students today need a vast number of skills in the ever changing 21st century they live in today. Literacy now encompasses different mediums besides traditional texts and students need to learn how to analyze, critique , and evaluate these multimedia texts #satchat
I would feel so much pressure to finish books I didn't like -- and when it's a class read, you HAVE to read it - but that just makes you HATE it! #satchat
Yes! How many Ts do you here talking about the books they love and can’t put down?
We need to create spaces for that exchange among adults and it will then be a part of the school culture.
#satchat
A4: Literacy coaches/specialists. Reading teachers to work with struggling readers. Teachers who are always honing their craft and learning about the latest practices and looking at relevant research #satchat
A3 when I have a book I love, I can’t put it down. If I’m not engaged in the story, I plod through it. Helping them find their “can’t put it down” topics and authors will give them something to run to. #satchat
A3 Explicitly teaching and practicing skills, strategies & fluency. Engaging students in word knowledge and word fun....all wrapped up in plenty of wide reading. #satchat
A3 We have to cut the shit. Reluctant readers are reluctant bc of many reasons. Maybe they don't want to read another book about a white child and a dog. Maybe they don't want to hear any more lies about Chris Columbus #satchat
Maybe they don't want to have to wait for that one month a year to have a teacher halfheartedly lead a discussion about people they identify with. We need to be excited to show our reluctant readers that reading is a vehicle to THE truth by knowing their history #satchat
A3Taking interest in students 1st.Take stock in what their experience/attitude already is. Make book rec, whet appetites, set goals for stamina,&celebrate their success! Be a concierge of great books-a new distinction I learn/ this morning from @ziegeran & @PaulWHankins#satchat
A3 Stamina starts in the lowest grade levels - Choice Interests Goals and Variety - Build stamina thought conferring and conversations - Student reading is sparked by the ability to discuss texts and all grade levels and share thoughts and feelings #satchat
I love the flexible reading book club groups we do. Students choose a book and read it with 3-4 friends in class. Best way to read is positive peer pressure. #satchat
This is a key note, Kelly. Partnered with fluently navigating texts, our Ss must transfer their knowledge of reading to responding successfully with writing. When our Ss read rigorous texts, they increase their capacity to craft rigorous responses to the texts #satchat
A3: I have experienced success with “The Daily Five” @thedailycafe ...choice, discipline, small group support, instruction, stamina-building, love of reading...all built in! https://t.co/e9Z5Vl9bfC 😊 #satchat
Q3: How do we get our students to be stamina-driven, page-turning, skill-based readers...not just the already robust readers, but the reluctant readers, the below grade-level readers, the use-to-be readers? #satchat
A4 Culturally responsive texts that allow every student to see themselves or identify with a strong, admirable protagonist. A lot of that at every level #satchat
A3: We need to model reading, share reading through read aloud and find out what interests them and then share that interest with them. Take the time to connect with them through text. #satchat
A3: Want to reach reluctant readers? Give them something worth reading then teach them the skills they need to tackle it always with the why and how. It should be something done with the student not to the student. #satchat
A4- A school-wide understanding that a culture of reading is crucial to success of every single student. A commitment to making this passion visible at every level. Ongoing PD available to build best practice #satchat
A4: patience & empathy of course. But money for in-class libraries and resources to facilitate trips to book stores and money for flex seating in class to read all would help too. #satchat
A4: I find my T's at the middle school level need support in understanding how reading develops from an early age. We often just expect them to have it down already. #satchat
A3: On a recent reading log my Ts suggested I NOT read another graphic novel. I don't just read graphic novels. I read LOADS of genres. But I read them for different reasons at different times. I wish the feedback I got as a reader wasn't generalized. #satchat#readinglogsareMEH
A4: Don’t underestimate the power of sharing frequent, short, powerful texts. We share a poem to start class each day to discuss together. More ideas for that here: https://t.co/oNbBnoN8Py#satchat
A4: Remember your library media specialist is your in-house collaborator for all things reading! From selection to discussion in any format, we've got your back! #satchat
ALL my kids have a voice & choice in book selection! Need 2 know their passions/❤️ of genres. My kids have outlets 2 showcase their love of literature #booksnaps#literaturecircles#booktalks My kids ❤️ presenting info learned from book either on @epic or hardback #satchat
They can always access scholarly texts and find resources that can validate what they learn. We do believe though that putting what they've learnt to writing is the best way to put it out there for everyone to learn in a simpler manner. #satchat
THIS. And on the flip side, do you ever hear white teachers saying that a book by or about a person of color is “inaccessible” for students? That’s a manifestation of white privilege—the expected ease of relating to a white author and character. #satchat
It just occurred to me that learning to read as a child of color can be so taxing because in order to understand the motivations of characters who do not look like nor live like them SoC have to do double work #satchat
A5: We definitely need the support of knowing the “why” behind our practices before moving to the “how.” Good PD is ongoing, and eventually embedded. Come in and coach me around this best practice. Like kids, teachers need a gradual release too! #satchat
A4: Show Ss that reading for fun is actually a thing and not limited to nerds, geeks, and their Ts. If a school builds a positive reading culture for all, that helps reach all readers. Not a program, but a positive reading culture. That's a must. #satchat
A3 Stamina starts in the lowest grade levels - Choice Interests Goals and Variety - Build stamina thought conferring and conversations - Student reading is sparked by the ability to discuss texts at all grade levels and share thoughts and feelings #satchat
A4: small group and one on one reading. Talking about the text. “Come and tell me what that chapter was about.” Sit in proximity on a couch. Be comfortable. Simulate home and Ps reading with their children. It’s essential to value them and what they read. #satchat
A3 children don’t become enthusiastic expert readers w/o lots of time reading - and they won’t read on your command or for your interests — make books and reading personal to the reader #satchat
A4 To nurture readers, it sure helps to have books in our classrooms and the time to read the books and get to know our students. We need to see beyond matching kids to genres/topics—to notice students’ values and find books that will interest and challenge them. #satchat
A4: Time to discuss individual students with people who work with struggling readers, like specialists, special education Ts, Speech and Language Ts. Teamwork is essential! #satchat
A3 provide a wide-variety of texts so Ss find books about their interests. Explore different genres as a class and have Ss identify which ones interest them most. #satchat
It's early Saturday, join in your OWN home in your OWN Twitter by following on Tweetdeck or https://t.co/BRJklNkSHB | Your CHILDREN matter as much as mine. #SatChat
#satchat A2 Today's readers face the challenge of deciding what to read. They need to develop strategies to work through this process that meet their needs and interests.
A3 Stamina-driven, skill-based...these aren’t my primary goals for Ss, just as they are not my own primary goals. I read to learn, understand, be edified. #satchat
A3: Via @pernilleripp
“Use your own reading identity to create powerful reading experiences for all students
Empower your students and their reading experience by focusing on your physical classroom environment”
#satchat
#satchat A4: Time to read to/with Ss; multiple copies of great lit.; strong relationship w/library/media center; appropriate expectations and goals for reading in KNG; supportive writing instruction as students learn to write for others to read...
A4 #satchat support... and time. In addition to not liking reading initially, I was a slow reader - always felt in competition w/ others as we read in class and kids flipping pages.. I'd flip even if I wasn't done just b/c I didn't want to be behind!
A3. There are some amazing booklists to help Ts create libraries that represent all Ss: @teachingchange has a great one. This is core to getting all Ss interested in, and continuing, reading. https://t.co/wIbxj7y4IX#satchat
A4: There needs to be support between classroom Ts & the media specialist, plus that home connection is crucial. Opportunities to put books in every Ss hand. #Satchat
A4: Fewer regs on how our exactly how our Literacy minutes should be spent. I remember when I first got started with elem Literature Circles - my Ss didn’t want to stop reading & discussing! But...it was 🕑for Writing or Word Study... ugh! #satchat
A4. We need HUGE variety of books in every genre; print & nonprint. We need dedicated time to stop working & explore offerings. Model. Book talk. Ask a student to tell you about book you haven’t read. No book levels! #satchat
Yeeessssss!!! This is important - PD without a critical lens is neither professional nor does it contribute to development - not sure what it is... waste of time? Should we call it WOT? 😂 #Satchat
A4 Reading resources that provide relevant links to student interests in our classrooms. Also, we need strategic, applicable, ready-to-use-the-next day professional development designed to increase Ts instructional toolkit to teach reading processes effectively #satchat
A3. There are a variety of books to choose from, and yet we prefer those which are usually the run-of-the-mill, monotonous types which may or may not be liked by some readers. Being inclusive in classroom means choosing books according to the needs of all students. #satchat
#SatChat | Essential I think because I think that the incentives, too early isn't encouraging leaders, but wanting to win. Winning and reading is a different thing.
A4 #Satchat providing time to celebrate students reading activities where positive feedback maybe received from students & teachers outside the 4-walls of their classroom
Help matching strategy to skill, ways to balance mentor texts and choice texts, Access to seeing reading workshop in action, and maybe even smaller classes so that you can make intentional, personal connections more easily #satchat
A4 Ts need a room filled with a wide variety of books! All genres, all levels, all types of reading materials! Let kids choose what they want to read based on their interests! Make time for reading for fun as well as have places where kids can read comfortably. #satchat
A3 That happens at a very young age. Parents must read to their children every day. Children must have access to books of interest. Pleasure reading early is the best way to get a kid to become a good reader. How many young students are reading daily??? That's a problem. #satchat
A4. Please ... please check out this graphic as having families involved in our schools and in their child's reading can take many different forms. #satchat
A4: I'd love to see our secondary librarians engaging in book talks ... in the library, in classrooms .... little sneak peeks! Students will see themselves in the characters and ask to read the books! #satchat
Our first grade students were so excited to build their rdg stamina from the start of the school year. Now they are up to 16 minutes rdg to themselves and 16 minutes rdg to a partner. #wemakereadingfun#stamina#satchat
A4: To make reading enjoyable we need areas at school that are inviting and encourage an atmosphere of reading. In order to apply these skills outside of school Ss need to practice reading in a similar environment. Dim lighting, comfy chairs, blankets, soft music. #satchat
As a history T, I'm inclined to utilize more primary sources than anything else - what did actual people during a particular time actually say -- not a historic overview but what was it really like?? #satchat#sschat
A2 Students need to read one article and decipher it to death several different ways. This is what reading is all about.... said no student ever. #satchat
A4: We need patience, an understanding of where the child is in terms of reading ability, the child’s interests, time to support and nurture reading growth, and support at home to continue practicing reading. We need to model reading and encourage it. #satchat
A3 We have been working hard to model that reading is something staff members across all depts do. It is not just something an Eng teacher makes students do, but rather an actual life activity adults enjoy. Opens convos about reading across the building. #satchat#hawkreads
WISDOM.
Research says: best thing you can do to develop literacy skills (from vocabulary acquisition to comprehension) = increase volume of reading.
It's why choice matters! Increase reading time by letting kids follow passions. Skills follow. #satchathttps://t.co/KSxNLQ8Lrt
A3 children don’t become enthusiastic expert readers w/o lots of time reading - and they won’t read on your command or for your interests — make books and reading personal to the reader #satchat
A3: T need to support not limit interests. Let the Ss drive and follow their lead. If they are choosing then they will naturally be page turning! #satchat
Morning! Getting ready for #pd4uandme this morning. Don't normally jump in to #satchat because of the early hour, but I love that y'all are talking #reading !
Oh I’m claiming WOT from now on. Trying to see more parallels between my pedagogical beliefs in math and literacy. So much math PD is a WOT bc the Ts don’t have the same understanding we are trying to teach. #satchat
#satchat A4: Well, time would be great, but that's not going to happen, so maybe an individualized & focused yearly project on which edus could target their "free" time.
Building reading stamina takes time and support. We need to work alongside our readers and help rhem develop the motivation and skills to persevere when faced with reading challenges. #satchat
A3 Stamina starts in the lowest grade levels - Choice Interests Goals and Variety - Build stamina thought conferring and conversations - Student reading is sparked by the ability to discuss texts at all grade levels and share thoughts and feelings #satchat
A5. Twitter is A. MAZE. ING. for take-home reading and annotations! Makes learning visible as students use class specific accounts to show and share their annotations to classmates and strike up deeper conversations about what they're reading. #satchat#HuckLearns#TGGColor
A4. Time to create enjoyable reading experiences without sacrificing something else and resources such as Media Center Specialists to provide avenues for S’s to travel on, multimedia texts, and modeled experiences from T’s #satchat
Been looking for help with this - one shift to get closer to not reading the same book - if you feel you NEED to do #wholeclass novels, needs to be through book clubs or with TONS of choice/voice as to discussion and assessment. Some staff is trying this with OUTSIDERS. #satchat
A4: we need real books. We need time to read. We need school leaders who make reading a priority and talk to Ss and Ts about good books. Suggest good books and put school resources towards good books. #satchat
A1: If we want to develop readers we need to develop the culture where reading is modeled, shared, appreciated and valued. #satchat@TheBradCurrie@wkrakower
In reply to
@ScottRRocco, @TheBradCurrie, @wkrakower
A5: High interest pieces; I found my Ss love reading plays aloud this year so we had lots of fun with Anne Frank; incorporating reading time into the schedule at least once a week. #satchat
Well tell Brian Ellison that arming them would give them the opportunity to take over a home real easy with a shotgun. At least they wouldn't be homeless anymore.
#satchat#SaturdayMorning
“Brian Ellison, who is running against Democratic incumbent Debbie Stabenow, says homeless people are “constantly victims of violent crime” and providing them with firearms would provide a deterrent”
(truly a tRump-inspired solution... my opinion) https://t.co/aPeiKsnyuH

A3 Allow them choice in topics. A reading prof at Cal U of PA. told us years ago, let reluctant readers read what they want, it's like eating candy, eventually you get sick and move on to better things. #satchat
A4) The latest strategies and tech that will help us foster a 💜 of rdg, updated books that are relevant and interesting to our Ss, support for Ss who are below-grade-level readers, and teams of Ts and admin that swarm at-risk Ss in primary grades so that they close gaps #satchat
A4b: A fun idea for your library that I got from @kevinhoneycutt is to have Ss record a video of why they like a book (no spoilers), create QR code, and put it on inside cover of books in library. Fun for Ss to see vid recommendations from peers when choosing a book. #satchat
A4 I work in a district that's 🍀to have reading specialists & library media specialists in every elementary building.Partner/ w/ their expertise can help elevate all readers whether it's strategies to bolster our struggling Ss or how to push readers past comfort zones #satchat
We must realize in order for students to become independent readers and thinkers our instruction must value that. I do, we do, you do only ensures that a kid can do what the T modeled. And we wonder why kids can’t transfer knowledge and skills? #satchat
A4 Access to a classroom library that is diverse enough to peak the interests of all students. It works...I know because have one in my house as well. #satchat
I ask all the time. Mostly, lots of kids LOVE graphic novels! And maybe that's all they read! I read those and loads of others. But because it's "obsessive" everyone has to have a limit. I actually think most readers are obsessive. It's called being avid. #satchat
A4: We have 5-6 certified, trained teachers who work with small groups of readers 4 days a week for 30 minutes. On the 5th day they plan collaboratively. It's a great model to help our Ss thrive #satchat
I wonder if my Ts even KNEW that I struggled!! Aside from failing reading checks I mean -- I did what I could to get by, obviously... but as a non-reading teacher (technically), I NEED support on how to support them! #satchat
Like the note on mentor texts and choice texts here. Essential that our Ss have a plethora of experiences with reading resources to spark their interests and strategically build their reading stamina #satchat
#satchat Yes, absence of teacher-empathy can make it tough for students to focus on and really learn any content. Remember what it felt like as a child to be on the spot? Fearful? Embarrassed? Understand students & help them know they are safe wherever they are in their learning.
Raising a child and raising a reader is essential because those that don't read and enjoy other thing other than gossiping and meddling, it's evident in their actions, daily. #SatChat
A5: it starts with the 1st day of school. Setting routines and procedures. Making reading fun. Discussing and showing my Ss my love of reading. Encouraging them to read. Making time for reading independently and to a partner every day. #satchat
A2.
1. Design Thinking
2. Risk Management and Decision Making
3. Critical Thinking
4. Effective Communication
5. For readers:
a. Concentration
b. Critical Analysis
c. Note taking
d. Summarizing. #satchat
A4~ access to ongoing, rich materials across genres, reflect diversity& inclusivity, family support & engagement, coaching/mentoring for educators instructional strategies, #satchat
A5 We made reading a priority, supported PD opportunities, and provided literacy coaches for our staff. And we bought lots of new books that kids asked us to buy. #satchat
A5- Whenever I add a new cover to the display we gather on the carpet- they get comfortable- and I tell them all about the story. Sometimes these talks are 15-20 mins- they ask all sorts of questions- and we share the love of the story #satchat
A5 Sharing my own reading. Asking about what studenst are reading and reading those texts as well. Provide time to read. #ProjectLITbookclub great way to further this. #satchat
I was a "Slow Reader" as well! This does not mean content isn't understood. However when students are celebrated for quantity versus quality of reading comprehension it becomes disillusioning #satchat
A4 a continuum of support and resources - great class libraries, UDL like TTS scaffolds on tech (check out snap and read), audible books, wide choices not limits, teacher expertise, instruction based on need not labels #satchat
A5: using class time to read. Sounds simple, but my #fostere11 learners know I value our time together very much. The choice to use it to read sends a loud message. #satchat
Me too! I love creating book groups among Ss. Put Ss into small groups. Give them book options to choose from and teach them how to hold a book club fostered with direction, examples, Qs, modeling, and differentiation for all Ss to reach the curriculum. #satchat
A4 Staff needs to model and encourage reading, Someone needs to create platform for Ss to share and model reading, allow collaboration, book groups, discussions, etc. #satchat
A5. When students feel empowered and safe to share their thinking about what they’ve read and how they processed their thinking, everyone grows and becomes more engaged and motivated. #satchat
Q3: How do we get our students to be stamina-driven, page-turning, skill-based readers...not just the already robust readers, but the reluctant readers, the below grade-level readers, the use-to-be readers? #satchat
Book speed-dating, podcasting, AR book recs, character portraits (selfies), satirical spin-offs, write a characters college essay, interview character on late-night TV... lots of options if you think of it as extension instead of assessment #satchat
Have a great week and St. Patrick's Day #satchat. It's family time! We will be reading "Curious George", "Chloe Zoe", & "Julius the Baby of the World" later today, I'm sure (3 yr old favorites in this home - great place to start!)
A5: I always filled my room with books I read or wanted to read. I wanted my students to know I was a reader and to to know what I read. I wanted my students to do the same. A year-long expectation was to always be in the middle of reading a book. #satchat
A4 Princeton researcher Sam Wang, PhD says the greatest brain development and learning happens between ages 1-6. He gave a great talk. https://t.co/wqNql8NZZ9#satchat
A5 Create the culture by being the model! Let kids see you read. Let kids hear you talk about what you read. Let kids watch you get excited about what you read and books #satchat
A5 I've said this several times, but once I've established a relationship with the students, I will give them recommendations on books I think they will enjoy. Then, I can follow up with them better, since I have read the book. #satchat
Want to know what $10K worth of books looks like? Thanks to our wonderful school board and district administration for helping us update our library collection!#lex3grows
Exactly, not just have a library card for the first time as an adult and drop your child off for tutoring, read books, you cannot fake it through life forever. #SatChat
A5- When we find a book we really connect with as a class we create a new book cheer- we use these all day long and the students really get into character when they respond #satchat
A5 I teach two levels presently, AP & Academic - and reading aloud works w/ both - they hear my pronunciations and my emphasis -- emphasis helps with understanding. Beyond that, giving snippets of text gets them going #satchat
A5: No tried & true one method since it depends on the crop of Ss I have. Love using G Slides 4 Ss to make #BookSnaps of what they're reading/reflecting on, choice in what we read and what order in my novels class helps too. Activities that bring the text alive help too. #satchat
A4 I want my kids parents to read with them. In order to do that I'd love to give families books. If I had a magic wand every kid in every grade would get a book to take home each WEEK to read with parents. #satchat
It would be a curated list (different at each grade) that reflected the values of the community the school served and would be frequently updated with recommendations from children and families #satchat
We are really thinking through the mentor versus choice text option at my school currently. I agree students need both experiences. Teaching reading is a challenge. I am lucky that my @mgmgators teachers are digging in deep to figure this out #satchat
A5 We made reading a priority, supported PD opportunities, and provided literacy coaches for our staff. And we bought lots of new books that kids asked us to buy. #satchat
A4 More time for read alouds that give us a chance to have community experiences and discussions. “Tyranny of the urgent” sucks that time out of the day. #satchat
My real A5: Culture starts with an inviting space to read and empowering language. One of my favorite ways to do this Across my district is to start with @pernilleripp and the Global Read Aloud. Culture is so important! #satchat#ineedcoffee
A4. TIME. At the HS level we worry about getting through content and reading might fall be the wayside. Dedicated time like during a homeroom could offer a chance. #Satchat
#satchat A5
Usually it is not too hard to get physics students to read Physics and Technology for Future Presidents: An Introduction to the Essential Physics Every World Leader Needs to Know
There a helpful website with further didactics

A4. The time to just Read together as a school. D.E.A.R., partner reading, Guest readers, Upper grade/lower grade, Principal visits and reading. We do it and kids love it and adults seem to enjoy it too. ☺
#satchat
A5: We started using #readersnotebooks inspired by #tcrwp to allow S's to think in the ways that work for them. S's have been far more engaged, but still a long way to go. #satchat
A5) Give Ss time to read individually, in pairs, in lit circles. Give Ss lots of choice in school and classroom libraries. Show them that we love reading. Share how reading is still relevant in today’s society; connect how they will use it in whatever path they choose. #satchat
A4. I would love to have the resources that keep my Learning Commons “open” during the summer (even for limited days/hours) so the students could return to school and be able to continue their reading. #satchat
A4 Spreading a culture of reading starts in the classroom and expands to the whole building - My favorite questions when I connect with students - What book are you reading - What made you interested in the story - What books are you going to read next #satchat
A3: There has to be a connection & it has to be fun! The books that I read in 10th Grade English class are still some of my favorites in part because of the way @casehighprinc brought the book to life for the class! #satchat
Agreed, Kelly. ‘Pushing’ students, too hard, too soon, can be detrimental in many ways...confidence, competence, interest, passion, willingness. #satchat
A5: As a reading specialist I have the whole school to think about. I host a monthly book lunch for 3rd and 4th graders. We get together and talk about the books they read that month from the monthly recommendations. The Ss and I both love it! #satchat
Finding these Resp v interesting As an adult I recognize I ‘trust’ sources more that tend to share my same biases. That’s ‘real’. I love Faulkner but I can’t make my way thru an IKEA assembly manual #realreader I didn’t read 85% of my assigned R in college #satchat A2
A5: My favorite thing is the way books are organized & displayed and then cozy & inviting reading spaces are made! It makes all the difference in the 🌎! #satchat
A5. Getting into the habit of reading (with true choice built in) every day, several times a day, even for a few minutes. As always, choice is key. @donalynbooks writes about this all the time: https://t.co/RwASGCk0Vk#satchat
Book Stores Know This: How books are displayed or arranged in the space can be difference between "spine out" or "checked out." You know what I have found? A book "face-out" on the marker rail of the white board is at eye level with a reader in his, her, or their desk. #satchat
Research shows that students who fail to read adequately in first grade have a 90 percent probability of reading poorly in fourth grade, and a 75 percent probability of reading poorly in high school. MIT and Harvard are teaming up to fight literacy issues.
https://t.co/D5NjTgMvg8
A4 I just thought about this,I dont give my kids time to read when they want to. I have a time for them to read. That wouldnt work for me as an adult, but I expect it to work for the kids #satchat
A4: The culture of the classroom environment is one of the most overlooked support systems for readers. Set up your space to invite reading, thinking, learning, and most importantly failing-because it’s in failure that we succeed! #satchat#safespacesgrowwings
#satchat A5: I talk about my own reading sometimes. We have a French café corner -- bistro set and tall lamp. Most effective: presenting reading topics in French on social justice matters.
A4: resources needed to build a robust reading culture: money for books, training for teachers including specific interventions to help kids when struggling (esp at secondary level where reading often looks like something assigned not taught) & a staff of readers #satchat
A5: Read aloud! Always read to your Ss. You serve as a great model. And what a great time to gather and get close (all ages love sitting at your feet) and share some real emotions (happy, excited, angry, sad, etc). I love it!!#satchat
Like seriously... I'm still not an avid reader, despite surrounding myself w/ books. I love knowledge but still not a huge reader. I try.. and I'll never give up! #satchat
A5: #GoogleClassroom meets Laura Ingalls Wilder. There is magic in her books and they engage almost every S. Also read “Fish Up A Tree” & “Out of My Mind” for CORE. @ThinkingMaps tied to writing. Primary sources for Social Studies. Ss create reading responses w/ @gsuite#satchat
A5 Some ways to create a culture of reading: time for free reading, giving specific feedback on their annotations, book explorations, book partners, having books about the social justice issues that matter to them, having 1-1 conversations about books, asking for recs. #satchat
A5: Quite simply, teachers have to model and lead by example. Read when the kids read; show their passion for reading by thinking aloud, showing real emotion, etc. Can't fake it, though. Kids can see it a mile away. #satchat
Building a classroom "Good Reads"-inspired blog or @Flipgrid is a great way for students to recommend books to one another and build a culture or reading in the classroom #satchat
A5 We made reading a priority, supported PD opportunities, and provided literacy coaches for our staff. And we bought lots of new books that kids asked us to buy. #satchat
A5: Making time for independent reading together, modeling my reading life, recommending books to students, talking about books. #satchat
Cozy places to read, we LOVE our book corner!
A5: As a principal, I get into classes and read whether it’s during Daily 5, leafing a small group, doing a read aloud or holding a book club with students. I ask them what they’re reading, talk about books or hang out in the library and help them pick books. #satchat
A5 The best solution that I have found are skillful Ts who practice purposeful planning and preparation of lessons that provide strategic guidance to students on navigating texts. These Ts engage their Ss, show them how to navigate reading process, and support Ss growth #satchat
Please join me in about 20 minutes for an informal discussion on Book Studies! Let's do it EdCamp Style! You bring the questions, resources, titles, etc!!!!! Hope you will join me! #pd4uandme
Leveled reading is for the birds.
And again, I speak from the research here. The evidence base for leveled reading is practically nonexistent. One (of many) articles on this below.

Wouldn’t funds, spent on building up classroom ‘libraries’, be helpful? This would go a long way toward supporting what you are recommending, Michaele! #satchat
A5: I provide a library area with a big comfy chair, pillows, natural sunlight, and classical music. Reading is a daily station. We discuss what we like and dislike. I use books to for examples of social and behavioral situations and how we can learn from the characters. #satchat
Students see books wherever they look in the class- they also have room to stretch out and read/ cuddle up and read/ hide away and read- just like we do as adults- it's not always sitting at a table or desk #satchat
And I've shared my struggles w/ my Ss too.. It's important they know this - just b/c I teach APUSH.. doesn't make me a super star -- I never took APUSH (not sure we had it) and I had poor reading comprehension #satchat
A5. In my HS library, I bought lots of graphic novels. I started playing wide variety of music all day (like @HamiltonMusical). Students made lists of books they wanted. Bought bean bag chairs. Added new magazines. #satchat
A5 #Satchat provide time for students to express content they've obtained by reading in engaging and meaningful ways~ let them blog about book or articles they read focused upon their interest or content being teached
A4. Many schools have libraries these days but any libraries outside of schools can support reading sessions in their premises. Local authors can be promoted in schools if their books are being read; they can just come in and discuss their own books with students! #satchat (1/2)
Also think about a book as a journey - not just the hero's journey, but that, too. Students can map it with @GoogleForEdu Tour Builder #satchat or @jburg Lit Trips!

A5 We need to make students aware that it is not just Reading/lit/English teachers that read for pleasure. Have the math and science teacher talk about books they love. Kids compartmentalize teachers by the subject they teach. They need to know everyone can be a reader #satchat
A4: Literacy coaches/specialists. Reading teachers to work with struggling readers. Teachers who are always honing their craft and learning about the latest practices and looking at relevant research #satchat
I would love for all of our families to have the time, ability, resources, etc to read alongside their children - for this to happen, we've got to do more to support our wonderful families #Satchat
Want to know what $10K worth of books looks like? Thanks to our wonderful school board and district administration for helping us update our library collection!#lex3grows
A5~ we welcome guest readers throughout the year to share their love of reading and books~ former students, admin, community members and most importantly, family members 😊 #big hit #satchat
This is crucial for all adults in the building. Ss yearn to be in conversation with us about their books. *That’s* what makes us a community of learners - when all of us are learning. #satchat
#satchat A5: A range of books available at all times for Ss; book recommendations to parents & families shared by Ss themselves; time to talk w/Ss about what they like to read; & even reading the birthday book Ss receive from our office!
A6: Keep a balance of reading for fun, furthering personal education, and reading something outside of my typical genre preferences to branch out. Let Ss see this is happening. Model and they will follow. #satchat
A5 Read alouds!!!!! Modeling for Ss reading behaviors, skills, and strategies. I shared w/ my Ss mistakes I make as a reader but what I do to fix it! Give the skills to persevere when reading a deep text. #satchat
An Idea: "Wrap and weave" a picture book read-aloud with a multigenre textual flood. Yesterday, in #Room407, we experienced SOMETHING BEAUTIFUL in the midst of ads, music, poems, excerpts, essays, and definitions of beauty. You can build these text sets pretty easily. #satchat
A4. Need a variety of lit. Also have student select books they want 2 read- even in guided reading- kids are not a level-They r a reader - know their behaviors. We need fun innovative ways they will be drawn to books. #booktasting#bookreviews on @flipgrid#imovie#satchat
A5 follow educators on twitter who constantly study literacy and integrate what they know all day long - across curricula, within context, connecting literacy to life #satchat people like @pernilleripp@donalynbooks@avivaloca and many more #satchat
Students can be asked to exchange books that they've read and they like. This would also help build common interests among students, improving peer relationships as well. #satchat
Ss will read the text, find something they like about it or want to question - and Ss will stand in two lines, one side will "present" to the other, than they switch.. just a fun format for sharing/collaborating on text #satchat
A1: If we want to develop readers we need to develop the culture where reading is modeled, shared, appreciated and valued. #satchat@TheBradCurrie@wkrakower
In reply to
@ScottRRocco, @TheBradCurrie, @wkrakower
In our latest book, my colleagues and I dedicated the entire first chapter to developing a reading culture. We debated it several times but agreed...everything relies on a great culture for readers and writers...especially before lessons and standards are considered #satchat
A5 A good classroom library...allowing my students to share books with their peers that they really liked was powerful. It is also important that they see a purpose. #satchat
A5. We do a community-wide read. S’s battle it out all Fall & select THE book. We have a huge reveal & then kids go out to the community & challenge folks to share in the reading experience. We distribute over a 1000 books & ask that they pass it on. Want to hear more? #satchat
A4. Our Viking Dads are currently focusing on school-wide Improvement projects. Eventually I’d like to see them move into or branch out into “reading with student readers” or “study buddies”. #SatChat
a5| #SatChat | Expansive libraries. Multiple spaces to hang out. Encouraging reading with peers. Just to name a few. | My books were stolen in 2011, but that doesn't take away the love.
A5: Some of the best reading cultures have been the rooms where teachers challenge their students to really pick apart the text to establish what the author is saying—both explicitly as well as implicitly! #satchat
A5 Understanding that choice is important & interest is unique to each S. Support s's in finding favorite genres, authors & series. Support access to these books. I strive to eliminate "fake reading." My wish is to develop interest, stamina & growth. #satchat
A5 seek out new tech apps like @Newsela that supports accessibility to virtual information that can be customized for readers of all levels #satchat (ask @genelosborn about it)
A4: Students need to see themselves represented in the book choices you offer. And they need to have book options that help grow new perspectives as well. #WhatsOnYourShelf#satchat
A5 Audio Books with headphones and hubs so groups can listen together. Love to see the facial expressions and hear the giggles and gasps as groups of kids who often struggle to settle into a book hear them come alive. #playaway#satchat
2 circles, facing each other, give each pair a Q to discuss (or use Q's generated by students), 3 min to chat, then rotate, get a new partner & a new question #satchat
A6. On long car rides (e.g. my commute to / from work) audiobooks are outstanding. Keeps me hearing great literature and excited to pick up where the narration leaves off in the printed text. Also listening to other great teachers share what they are reading! @placekEDU#satchat
Encouraging writing after or during the read, and also having the visuals to go along with the reading materials is essential as well. The entire picture essential. #SatChat
A5: Some of the best reading cultures have been the rooms where teachers challenge their students to really pick apart the text to establish what the author is saying—both explicitly as well as implicitly! #satchat
A5. Building Ss' routines into literacy is also very powerful. I love #booksnaps from @TaraMartinEDU, which introduce platforms Ss might not otherwise connect to reading. #satchat
A5. Read-alouds, share what I'm reading or my favorite books with kids..The room is comfortable and encourages reading..carpet, pillows, high interest books..encourage their passions #satchat
We begin with the Dove Beauty Campaign Ad with the forensic scientist We enter a "textual flood" with the first two pages of a picture book to introduce the subject. Student readers work their voices and pieces into the experience. Introduces synthesis for AP exam essay. #satchat
A5: you want a reading culture Ss need to see the value. This needs to be modelled and consistent. In other years I have caved when kids want to use reading time for other work quietly. It makes the reading seem as secondary. #satchat
A5. 'As a student, I used to love reading whatever I could get my hands on. So when I found my peers in the library doing something similar, I would try the books they had read before. And my teachers were supportive of this as well.' - @thesolothinker#satchat (1/2)

A6: Time to read=life balance. A lot of the time I carve out for myself is spent writing my own books. That is creative and fun, but can also feel like work, it's all coming from me. Latest book just finished, so I’m reading every night. It feels indulgent and wonderful. #satchat
I love the graphic novel short reads from Capstone. They integrate science and SS topics in lots of titles and are high-interest for my intermediate Ss! #satchathttps://t.co/G1Pfx6jq6T
A5: My favorite thing is the way books are organized & displayed and then cozy & inviting reading spaces are made! It makes all the difference in the 🌎! #satchat
A5 share book ideas and critiques w/Ss. I have my @goodreads lists public on my webpage along w/ old @shelfari lists I keep my own collect in my classroom too, Ss can borrow. #satchat
Having people around you with goals is great. I've never been a fan of audiobooks though, I like the actual library and bookcases, funny I'm without those now. #SatChat
A6. On long car rides (e.g. my commute to / from work) audiobooks are outstanding. Keeps me hearing great literature and excited to pick up where the narration leaves off in the printed text. Also listening to other great teachers share what they are reading! @placekEDU#satchat
A6 I literally surround myself w/ piles of books in hopes that I will get to them, but seriously, I use my Kindle app and Audible and do what I can when I can - it's still a struggle sometimes, but more so now to keep interested #satchat
A5: The kids love my cozy reading area, books on display, individual book tubs, poetry binders they keep, & daily storytime. Reading Rainbow teaches us about empathy, connections to real life, & how special reading is. #satchat
#satchat just looking at time and I must go~Thank you to our hosts! I enjoyed the conversation & info from all the peeps who joined in on this #TwitterChat
Those are great ideas! Next school year I am wanting to have Ss create trailers for books, video tape themselves giving a book review, and record a talk show about being the author or character from the story they like. @PaulaKluth Has a lot of good ideas for #UDL#satchat
In reply to
@MissStephan, @MsGrotrian, @PaulaKluth
I've been reading books from our media center and then tweeting about them to try and get the students interested in a book them might not have picked up. #satchat
A5: I love doing book talks to create a buzz ab/ a book. Also, setting aside time f/independent reading where I roll up my sleeves &get to work: kid watch, 1:1Convos, making rec. Make a space inviting Here’s a not so great pic of one of my favorite spaces @woschools#SatChat
A6: I literally live and breathe books! I always have a book with me, participate and facilitate book studies, discuss books. I couldn't imagine my life without reading. #satchat
Although I appreciate the sentiment, how will "just read with your child" provide resources or take down barriers for families?
If we start with the premise that all families want to read with their child & then ask what gets in the way, it becomes a diff. conversation #satchat
A5 Reading must be an everyday thing in your classroom, not a filler just when kids finish another task early. And this shouldn't just happen in Language Arts class. #satchat
A5 Goals lead to success with all readers - I found that very important as a teacher and continue to see as an administrator - The key is creating the goal side by side with students and celebrating the success of goals within the classroom community #satchat
I think this is something teachers can really help with: Observing what the students are reading, finding out about the books themselves and then recommending the same to other students in the class. Some of them can even be academic enough to teach new concepts as well! #satchat
A5: Perhaps simplistic, but...make time, model reading myself, provide a wide variety of texts, celebrate what students read (invite sharing), promote/support with parents of my students. #satchat
#satchat Oh YES! Updating content, making multiple copies of favorite texts available, and encouraging family use of library media centers, so they're no longer viewed as repositories, but suppliers of valuable and enjoyable information!
A6: For me, it's finding the time and making sure I can read some daily. It doesn't have to be a lot, but I need the time to read for myself, for pleasure, each day, even if it is only 5-10 minute chunks. I read. #satchat
I kinda wish my bookshelf, in my classroom, was more visible to kids. It's kinda behind my desk.. but just like they say more books in a home... the more they see in the classroom, peaks their interest #satchat
A6: Sadly, as much as I LOVE to read, I find it challenging during the school year. The summertime however I try to read as many of the books I’ve accumulated as possible—both professional and pleasure reading! #satchat
A6 I read what I want when I have the free time! The books I choose are purely for pleasure! I keep them on my nightstand, my kindle, and on my phone so I can read wherever I am! #satchat
A5 I model reading by posting a pic of the books I am currently reading outside my classroom door. As I finish them I move them to the door of my cabinet. Many Ss have commented on the books I am reading. #satchat
A5: Ensuring the environment supports readers of all levels, know your readers interests and infuse it into your teaching, and expose students to many types of literacy elements. And follow a balanced literacy framework so that teaching involves them. #satchat
A5 b: Something I've also seen are book reviews by students from previous years. Students find other students' recs powerful, and this further enables student choice. #satchat
A6 I love to read things in Twitter and professional books and articles. But sometimes just curling up with a good book and telling my family leave me alone, I'm reading today, ALL day. #satchat
A6: I always have a book with me in some format: Print, Kindle and//or audio.Strike up conversations w/ people carrying a book, join @goodreads , and these @nprbooks recs https://t.co/szj4aZggHO#satchat
A: During the summer I read more for pleasure. During the school year, I am in a book club with colleagues. Ss know I am in a book club. I read my book in front of them. I also use Audible ALL THE TIME so I can listen while I drive. #satchat
A6 I engage in #PLN especially #satchat , #bookcamppd , and looking forward to #pd4uandme Discussion about these books and engagement on @goodreads. Find people to talk about the text with.
A6 I read books written by people on the margins esp Black women. I am healed by their stories of resistance and self-love and care. I love reading books that charge you with a desire to act. #satchat
A6) I try to set aside time each day to read and write, although I devote the most time during the summer. Balance my reading choices between professional books and personal reads. #satchat
A6 As an English teacher and a writer, I read a lot for work and don’t find it fun. I nurture myself as a reader the same way I nurture student readers: by recognizing that fun is not the only reason to do something. We can read because it matters. #satchat
#satchat A6: With the phone at my fingertips, I read articles most of the time these days, but I'm ordering books as I read recommendations, so I have a pile for spring break & summer. #yay
A6) I usually have 2 books going at once: one for personal enjoyment and one for professional growth. I’ve got to be interested in what I’m reading, just like my Ss! #satchat
A5. Ours starts with a “I am currently reading...” poster so show what staff are reading. Some kids ask about the books. Mine always see the book I am reading on my desk. #Satchat
A6: Sometimes I feel like a hypocrite when I promote reading for fun, but rarely get to myself...but then I realize that my reading for fun looks a bit different. I LOVE reading books by my favorite literacy experts. #satchat
A5: the last 9 weeks I’ll be teaching through two nonfiction novels—really breaking down texts and modeling for the Ss the reading process. This will allow for them to see and hear the whole process. #satchat
Agree. It is important that our Ts are skilled in applicable instructional practices that successfully support students as they navigate explicit and implicit themes in texts. Essential that our Ts use strategies that guide Ss into deeper recognition of text symbolism #satchat
A6 My book group keeps me reading books I might not normally choose - like trying new foods, it gives my consumption variety! Also like hearing from friends what they’re reading and browsing the table at Costco and Barnes and Noble. #satchat
A6 #satchat Of course, I love #reading, but spending ttime on Amazon, looking over new #books, definitely one of my guilty pleasures, virtual window shopping
A6- My favourite part of the day is after I read stories to my 4 year-old at night, we both read our own books alongside one another. There is something so special about reading beside a loved one.#satchat
A6: The best way to develop a culture of literacy in your own classroom is to read and write with your students, share your thinking, and keep independent time from being eaten up by other influences! #satchat
I don’t yet see an answer to the competition: reading vs Netflix vs games vs social media . Actually, I don’t look me how this war is progressing. #satchat
A6: I fill my Amazon cart with best practice books & every once in a while hit "Proceed to Checkout" to add to my pile on my nightstand. I need to set aside time for my own eye's on print reading. But I'm constantly reading my Twitter Feed, blogs etc #Satchat
As a parent, I'd like to be included in the conversation as well! Love to know what my daughter's class is reading, what she is choosing for in-class reading, and how I can help challenge her to be a better reader at home #satchat

A2: Kids have to have an opportunity to read any kind of genre. Newspapers, menus, chapter books, information on the internet. Everyday stuff. #satchat
A6 I've only read PD books and new books kids may like, but I've been selfish and reading some books for my own personal enjoyment. I'm currently reading Dodge City by Tom Claven, and I've never been a big fan of the old west. #satchat
A6. I read every single day! I like to reflect & write my thoughts down in hopes that I can utilize relevant info when working with T’s. It’s validating to be able to apply what I’ve learned. Still looking for that magic dust to get kids to feel that intrinsic reward #satchat
A6: I nurture myself by knowing that reading is for ME! Not a school, classroom, or Ts. All the reading I do is to help me think, love, and connect to the world more. I just keep that in my brain as motivation. #satchat#LivBits#bestreadingisMEreading
A6: Honestly, I need to do better. BUT, I keep at least one (personal) book going that I can pick up at any time. I enjoy having that escape to another world. #satchat
A6:I love listening to audio books and podcasts in the car, reading before I go to bed and in the morning. I bring the books I'm reading to school and place them on my desk. Ss are curious and why I have books on my desk. I like to model that I love to read for fun. #satchat
A6 Make time to read, write creatively, go to book stores or flea markets to check out books, libraries...discuss w/PLN and non-teacher friends what they are reading. #satchat

A6. I sometimes use parts of in service work time to read. Use bits of lunch time. Basically when I have true free time. Do audiobooks count as reading? #satchat
When making purchases for electronics, also make sure it's something that encourages a reader as well, without certain skills, it's pertinent to know that nothing will be done. #SatChat
The Hamilton Township Educators Association has put Little Free Libraries in many of the district's 24 schools. At one elementary school, Ss will read books while waiting for the bathroom! #satchat

A6 I have surrounded myself with a community of readers in my #PLN . #IMMOOC book study on Twitter, #4OCF book study on Voxer and #pd4uandme coming up in a few minutes, among others. #satchat
A6: I have been doing book studies with my staff. This year we are doing a #boldschool book study. Here about it here in a brief spot I did for @DisruptedTv on professional development https://t.co/qQnGSIqHZf#satchat
A6: I sometimes feel I’m ‘failing’ as a reader...I think I model and promote well in the classroom, but I primarily read for information (non-fiction) on my own...very limited fiction reading...one of my regrets. Perhaps retirement will encourage a change! #satchat

Yeah we would totally agree. Monitoring what is being read is absolutely necessary, and if handled the right way it can result in combined growth for most students in the class. Lesser number of students would need catching up. Which is a good thing. #satchat
