#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
YAY YAY YAY! #worldgeochat is here!! Sam here from MA, 7th grade world geo. Happy camper tonight because Jurassic World 2 is playing in the background :)
Pete here in central Maine! Iโm one of the moderators of #worldgeochat. Former 6th grade teacher but work with grownups now to improve their health. Itโs still teaching geography (everything is #geography ๐)
I use Langston Hughes' poem, "The Negro Speaks of Rivers", as my introduction to ancient river civilizations. EQ is How does where you live determine how you live? #worldgeochathttps://t.co/HEjEj5IZ74
A1: Technology provides an opportunity to step outside the classroom walls to explore the world. It enhances those things we teach and allows Ss to dive deeper into content. #worldgeochat
A1: Technology in education is to help enhance student's learning, not replace the pencil. It's a way to broaden their minds and expand their universe #worldgeochat
A1: Tech should be a vessel to expand learning, not a crutch to replace it. So many positives can be gleaned worn tech, but it can also be equally abused. #worldgeochat
A1
Technology is a TOOL to be used to support education. It CANNOT BE the curriculum.
Teachers who use technology for technology's sake need to ask, how does this help my students' learning?
#worldgeochat
Like most (all?) technology, it helps people do more than what they could before. Like a lever, hammer, crayon or book a device or app can help us and our Ss do, be and learn more IF we know how to wield the tool with skill. #worldgeochat
Ken from Western Oregon University & Cennter for Geo Ed in Oregon. Going to slowly try to do this in my phone while at my daughterโs soccer practice #worldgeochat
A1: Like most (all?) technology, it helps people do more than what they could before. Like a lever, hammer, crayon or book a device or app can help us and our Ss do, be and learn more IF we know how to wield the tool with skill. #worldgeochat
A1. Starting with the fast pitch. Tech Edu ranges from engage tool to research tool to an analytical tool to a creation tool. Not a one stop shop, but helpful. All depends on the user #worldgeochat
A1 tech should enhance and enrich learning. Tech should make communicating easier. Tech doesn't need to be used for the sake of tech. Should have a clear purpose. #worldgeochat
A1. #worldgeochat
1. Complement/dovetail good instruction
2. Drive curiosity
3. Expand access
4. Shift perspective
5. Add an element of engagement
6. Expose students to the reality of living in a tech laden world
7. Skills to navigate that world....
A1: What is technology's role in the world? I think the reasons mirror the role of #tech in education: connections, information sharing - not replacing, but improving, enhancing, expanding possibility. #WorldGeoChat
A1 technologyโs best used as one pedagogical tool of many. Best used when other methods wonโt work or as a facilitator for teaching media literacy #worldgeochat
Summarization of Q1: Technology isn't a replacement tool; it's an enhancement tool. It opens doors, makes communication and exploration easier and engaging, and overall enhances learning, engagement and curiosity #worldgeochat
A1 Tech is also a game changer b/c it demonstrates that Ss don't need Ts for the conveyance of info. Ts more as facilitators...Ss less dependent on their every word.
#worldgeochat
A1 so many thoughts come to mind, but if it helps our learning outcomes, enriches the learning/lesson experience, adds functionally that we canโt or couldnโt do before, etc.... #worldgeochat
A1 - tech should enhance the curriculum, giving students a new perspective of the lesson/section. It also should give students a taste of geo careers (e.g. GIS, database management, get data, aerial imagery analyses, spatial analyses) #worldgeochat
A2: My 6th graders love using Google Maps with Street View to investigate the world. We are going to work with Google My Maps this year to add annotations to our learning journey this year. #worldgeochat
A2: super bummer when True Size was shut down, that was my number one. I like resources from NatGeo, Google Earth, and the Secret Door. I get a lot of good maps from various IG accounts too. #worldgeochat
Summarization of Q1: Technology isn't a replacement tool; it's an enhancement tool. It opens doors, makes communication and exploration easier and engaging, and overall enhances learning, engagement and curiosity #worldgeochat
A2 I love Google my maps for ss to collaborate and showcase learning.
Google earth and street view are awesome to explore and generate curiosity, develop geo questions.
#worldgeochat
A1: Tech should be a vessel to expand learning, not a crutch to replace it. So many positives can be gleaned worn tech, but it can also be equally abused. #worldgeochat
A2. Google Maps, Earth, My Maps, ArcGIS online, Qgis, https://t.co/ytem4mnid2 (yes it is mine, but I created it for my class so we get a lot of use out of it) #worldgeochat
A2: My 6th graders love using Google Maps with Street View to investigate the world. We are going to work with Google My Maps this year to add annotations to our learning journey this year. #worldgeochat
A2: Not EXACTLY a map site, but I love playing a quick game of GeoGuessr with my students at the end of the day. It's a great way to have conversations and critical thinking about geography (climate, development, language, etc. etc.) #worldgeochat
A2 Students cannot access Google Maps, or I would choose it. Security issues. FERPA. I do like the ESRI Interactive maps, though it takes a little skill for 7th graders to manage, #worldgeochathttps://t.co/avDcgpxIob
A3 This year we've used my maps to map items of our closets and where they were manufactured. Generated some great questions, discussions.
Also mapped the geography of a pencil.
#worldgeochat
A2
I love so much of @NatGeoEducation Map Maker, but my students think it's "clunky" and "not cool."
But I really like all the layers you can add!
#worldgeochat
Summarization of Q2 for #worldgeochat: Google Maps is the most popular tool to use to engage students with maps, but other tools such as The True Size help to give students an understanding of how places look in perspective
A3 This year we've used my maps to map items of our closets and where they were manufactured. Generated some great questions, discussions.
Also mapped the geography of a pencil.
#worldgeochat
If you pair google maps with the knightlabs timeline tool, it's pretty cool. Kids can visualize the linear w/timeline and spacial w/map. https://t.co/GI9si65TWt#worldgeochat
A2: I'm also going to suggest https://t.co/Yw87vYlOua and GapMinder. Great tools for taking geographic information and sharing it with a young audience. Hearing my fifth graders talk about why the countries with low caloric intake and low life expectancy๐ข๐ฒ๐ช๐ฝ #worldgeochat
It allows kids to connect visually, gives new context, perspective & allows for empathy when they connect w/things that they are passionate/matter to them #worldgeochat
A3: talked about this today with remote sensing tech and map accuracy. So many differing features that students can engage with, you can map almost anything now. #worldgeochat
A2 - @openstreetmap - a free to use, open source map of the world provides students with a platform 2 learn about geography data, conduct service learning & contribute 2 many humanitarian causes 4 free. For teachers, we provide in-person trainings and webinars! #worldgeochat
A3 it teaches spatial skills, analytical skills. Both key aspects of developing a geographic understanding. Also maps can be used to teach perspectives and author bias & turned into interdisciplinary learning #worldgeochat
A2 tomorrow as are describing physical regions of South America under the lens of the theme of place. They are putting together a slide and posting on my maps, as well as drawing a hexagon to identify the region on the map. #worldgeochat
Map tools like g Earth give kids a window into the places they're learning about. Giving kids perspective and empathy for their subjects of study is a big buy-in generator. #worldgeochat
A3
We're talking about culture right now, and some of culture can be explained by getting a closer look at a region.
When you add in overlays to see resources & natural features, it opens Ss eyes.
#worldgeochat
A3- I dont think you can really teach geography without using map tools. Maps are the backbone of our discipline. and there are some awesome digital tools to make it even more meaningful #worldgeochat
A3 Help make connections to geographic features/regions/locations they may be reading about or learning about in videos/images. The 3-D features in @googleearth make those come to life #worldgeochat
I appreciate it! It clarifies trends, and if I miss something while I am typing a question, I can catch up or go back to a major thread in the conversation now rather than after the chat is over. Thanks again. #worldgeochat
A3: Using map tools for geographic study builds a habit of geographic thinking about the world, especially when those tools are immersive, narrative, and dynamic in nature. #worldgeochat
A3. Just thinking about the choices cartographers have to make in creating maps helps enhance geographic studies along with critical thinking skills. https://t.co/1DIyqFSmhL#worldgeochat
A3 so many directions I could go with my answer, but I hope my students if even on the basic level just get a true understanding of how different the world truly is.#worldgeochat
A3: Students get a lot out of structured play with map tools, but it's also fun to let them choose a thesis (ex. C02 is tied to population or people like to live where it is hot) and let them construct maps to prove their thesis. #worldgeochat
Hey #worldgeochat Peter from Thunder Bay, Ontario popping in to say hi! A2 @googleearth and the Voyageur stories and My Maps are my "go-tos". One of my favourite activities is one called "Put your city on the map". Here's the Slide Deck- https://t.co/LVrWbo71Bp
A4: Adding map tools allows Ss to dive deeper into a region of study. They aren't just focused on the "where it is," but more on the "hows and whys" of the region. #worldgeochat
A3 - map tools give students a taste of current geo/spatial data careers. Important exposure before choosing where and what they wish to study after high school. #worldgeochat
A3 Maps area great way to begin asking questions about places identify patterns etc. Teaching kids to be map literate other than just identifying locations. Maps can tell us all kinds of information other than just where things are. #worldgeochat
Summarization of Q3 for #worldgeochat: Maps tools enhance the ability to generate questions. They help with critical thinking, identifying patterns, and makes connections to geographic areas. It's engaging for students because it's more interactive and more self-directed.
A3: Map tools help us explore our world more. I love going to street view for any unit or using the measuring tool to show how far things actually are. S's start to appreciate the "tyranny of distance" in Australia when they see how far apart major cities are. #worldgeochat
I made one... it's a great started activity in digital breakout style that teaches them the basics but takes a little grit. https://t.co/mVA09lVxVo#worldgeochat
A4- I love having the Ss make their own maps using @googlemaps that gives them the spatial awareness and the abiity to see patterns across the globe #worldgeochat
A4 I think just being able to show students the streets and neighborhoods, how people are living in different places. Being able to show them the impact that humans have on environment and the environment has on humans. #worldgeochat
A4: True Size, Google Earth, Population Pyramids, and YouTube for clips and extension videos. For comprehension and practice: Kahoot, Quizlet, and Quizizz. #worldgeochat
A4: @dollarstreet_/Gap Minder has been the most eye opening for students. To actually be able to see how kids like them live around the world is eye opening. True Size is a great size as well #worldgeochat
A4: Besides @googleearth (can that just be my answer to every question tonight?) most transformative for me recently has been @geteach's resources for KML and building stories with Google Earth #worldgeochathttps://t.co/Z0RVBSCVy2
A4 itโs not exactly a tech tool. Instead this link provides tools for analyzing tech thru a geographic lens; getting students to think geographically in their inquiry https://t.co/znjOleqvrT#worldgeochat
A4: the Internet in general ๐ honestly, being able to show students in NY a live shot of the Great Plains in a matter of seconds is such a wonderful option to have #worldgeochat
A4: speaking of @dollarstreet does anyone have anything for an intro to it. I want to use it with my world history kids just to show them the world. #worldgeochat
A4- but I do have to give a shout out about virtual reality. It really is amazing and gets the students to see things in real time and almost real life #worldgeochat
A4 Google Tourbuilder is a pretty awesome tool as well, equally simple and accessible and extrememly empowering for kids to tell their stories. #worldgeochat
A4: Tech tool for exploring Geography on Chromebooks: Google Maps or Google Tourbuilder. For practicing concepts (don't hate me) but I like Quizizz, Quizlet Live, and Kahoot is great for study games before a test. I also use lots of Youtube videos to teach. #worldgeochat
A4: I'm looking forward to diving into Google My Maps this year to allow Ss the opportunity to plan a trip around the world. We are going to use Google Maps to find the shortest route, then plan flights to each location to see what our cost would be. #worldgeochat
A4: Impossible to pick one, so I will share one probably nobody else will: @EdjiNotes. My friends and I built it for my Ss and what I like about it is putting text (ex. news articles) together with maps, historical artifacts, and SEEING Ss ideas & thinking. #worldgeochat
A4. As cheesy as this will soundsโฆgeography taught me how to code which in turn gave me new language that every year helps build relationships with my most reluctant learners. #worldgeochathttps://t.co/0AJdtyvHbT
Summarization for Q4 for #worldgeochat: If you haven't checked out @dollarstreet_, it's a must! Allows students to truly see living situations. Other key sites include: Google Tourbuilder, Google Maps, and True Size. Folks are looking for intro activities to @dollarstreet_
I used the phrase "self-assess themselves" today and got lambasted by a colleague for it. Who knew redundancy could be such a hot button issue? #worldgeochat
A5 just wrote this for the last answer but really like these questions for analyzing primary sources thru a geographic lens https://t.co/znjOleqvrT#worldgeochat
A5 Why the Twitter of course. It's how i find tools and good folks to learn from. Take that away and I'd still be using netscape and trying to figure out bulletin boards. #worldgeochat
A5: @classcraftgame is my go to! I've started incorporating it more into the classroom for management, rewarding positive, penalizing the negative, and bringing a bit more engagement to the classroom #worldgeochat
A5 Unfortunately, when creating maps in HS the most useful technology is a spreadsheet. Can't build these Texas dependency ratio maps without them. https://t.co/bvvSEFx3zz#worldgeochat
A5: not sure if itโs the best, but the #googlesuite options are a great way to get students engaged in creating their own docs/slides/sites - itโs fun seeing them take ownership of what they create with those tech tools #worldgeochat
A5: Some of my favs have already been mentioned, so again, with one you might not have heard of: Most Dangerous Writing App. Best way ever to get students started on a writing assignment. Type non-stop for 3 minutes or you'll lose your work. Trust me. It's a winner. #worldgeochat
A5: I stumbled upon @baamboozle this year and love it. Open ended question game, vs. the traditional selected response games like Kahoot! and Quizizz.
See more here at my shamless blog plug: https://t.co/asANbhbp1V#worldgeochat
A4- I missed on. I love how you can take a google form to collect data, get the info in a spreadsheet and then map it on mymaps. It's a great way to get data and map it #worldgeochat
A5: #Google Everything: Google Classroom, Google Drive, Google forms, it has been a game changer. I still like Edmodo for the teacher connections but switching over to the google platform has made it much easier to organize my digital universe for me & my S's. #worldgeochat
A5b also our giant state floor maps (18x22 feet)! Great to use in classrooms! Every state geo alliance should have at least one thanks to Nat Geo. Check with your state geo alliance. Hereโs a photo of an elementaryclass I worked with #worldgeochat
I'll be honest, #worldgeochat, Q5 is difficult to summarize. Too many wonderful tools that help to organize (ourselves and our students), engage, and have fun!
A6: VR or Aug. Reality system that allows Ss to interact with locations around Earth throughout time. They could see how places changed and interact with the cultures that developed locations. #worldgeochat
A6
I love the old school Mapping Labs from Geography Alive by @TeachTCI. If I could design the ultimate tech tool, it would give Ss a virtual transparency political map that they could put on any other map, and pin anything they want to the transparency. #worldgeochat
A6 I would love to design a VR device that allows my Ss to be truly transported to a location. I want to have them build personal experiences that will enhance their learning #worldgeochat
We will be in #Detroit in 18 days at @sotmus annual conference and have free tickets for educators to attend. There will be talks by teachers and we will lead 2 workshop trainings 4 teachers integrating openstreetmap in class. Please retweet & contact us for tix! #worldgeochat
Kim, you are the most amazing multitaskin driver Ever! Or else no one is on the roads. Or else you aren't driving. But in my imagination. You are driving, tweeting, taking photos and drinking coffee! #worldgeochat
A6: I want something that only exists in movies: the maps and computer display that Tony Stark can move around with his hands in Iron Man. So it's like VR, but not. You can go to street view in Google maps, but interact at the same time. Can we do that? #worldgeochat
We have a question for #WorldGeoChat - next week we were thinking about a regional study, but what region? We've never done one for Canada? Could we use our friends @allison_fuisz@MsIppolito & @theedpodcast to lead us in that?
Summarization for Q6 for #worldgeochat: We'd design something that is easy to use, easy to navigate, and includes a type of VR or AR that would help enhance student's learning. We're looking for "Tony Stark" technology!
A6 I'd make a hand-held 360 pic/vid takin geo taggin touch screen temperature sensin air quality detectin voice activated light saber type device. It would be really useful. #worldgeochat
Our archives will be posted in the next 10 minutes, and if you're in the super cool #worldgeochat DM group, you'll see them soon. IF you're not, well, tell me to add you!
