Travis Lape Innovative Programs Director Harrisburg SD. Love learning and connecting with other educators to support them with their learning! #SDEDCHAT
A1: I agree with @Wes_Kieschnick when he says in the book #boldschool that when we say that it is broken we are insulting every teacher that came before us. Can we adjust and shift our model of learning YES, but to just say it is broken is an insult. #sdedchat
A2: Disagree!! I think this is a scapegoat statement made by politicians who don't want to fund public education & adults who don't want to or don't know how to parent or teach responsibility. I think the youth standing up & speaking out show this is false... #sdedchat
#sdedchat. Janelle Firld Tech Specialist from Belgrade Brooten Elrosa! Super excited about this book study and I am bring 14 other passionate leaders along with me!!
A1: When you operate with a mentality that was functional 50 years ago during 2018, then yes, it's broken. Thankfully there are Ts out there that are willing to push the limits and try new things. #sdedchat
Yes I agree we can't operate in that same mindset, but it worked for what the world wanted and needed back then. Now our new world and need is different and we need to make sure we are supporting learners for that. #sdedchat
#sdedchat A1: I really feel that we really need to start preparing our learners for a future that will need them to be critical thinkers, problem solvers, and entrepreneurs...if we don’t, then yes, our system is broken!
Precisely! The educational benefit should not be for the person's name that is on the outside of the door. We need to shift our approaches and mindset. The benefit should be for the people in the seats. #sdedchat
A2: Instructional practices still need to be put in place in our new structure of school. To be a #BOLDSCHOOL it is then taking technology and having it be a tool in the learning but the learning does not depend on it. #sdedchat
A2: Before I read #BoldSchool I didn't believe in lectures. I thought talking to the entire class at once was bad. Reflecting on my teaching & use of tech... I think I'm guilty of using tech as a crutch to avoid direct instruction bc it is something I struggle w/ #sdedchat
A2: Well...I'm sure there is some good to traditional approaches, but it needs to be in moderation. Too much of any one thing is not always good...the same can be said for technology integration. #sdedchat
#sdedchat. A2: I really feel that we can’t just throw out the great strategies that work for our learners! We can keep some of those strategies and amp up our teaching with some of our great applications like VR, AR, and other tech applications that redefine learning!
That is the ah-ha moment I've had while reading this book. I think I'm in the deep end of just relying on technology & am severely lacking in the pedagogy behind what I do... much to think about this summer! Gotta find a better balance. #sdedchat
I love that about #BOLDSCHOOL it brings us back to the ground. Direct Instruction is not bad if it is used correctly. Getting the right learners with the right teacher then it makes sense to do that. Even in our #personalizedlearning we still do direct instruction. #sdedchat
Yep. It was a pretty big revelation to myself as I read. The things I struggle with most are lesson planning & collecting data. Really, it's because I'm not starting with the goal in mind, I'm just relying on tech tools. #sdedchat
YES! That is totally what this book is talking about. We can #personalizelearning but that does not mean we stop teaching or investing in our learners with the strategies that get the largest effect on learning. #sdedchat
Ha! Ours was that long in the back yard. The front yard was all dandelions, eek. and YES! We're doing a summer book study with Flipgrid, you should join!! #sdedchat
A1: Education is not broken but it can certainly improve. We rank last with other industrialized nations and at one time we were number #1 in all the STEM fields during the space race. We need to do a better job but in my expert opinion it is not broken. #sdedchat
#sdedchat A3: I believe that you need to have some seminar time, coaching/conferencing, and allowing the students to show what they know through voice and choice! They need to advocate for what they need and when they need it!!
A2: There are some things students need to know the old fashioned way, but we have to adapt to this new generation that is growing with technology at their fingertips. They can’t learn the way I did 20, 30 or 40 years ago. We adapt or become extinct. #sdedchat
Q4: Truth #1 #blendedlearning can and should elevate, not diminish, what you do best. Do you agree with this truth or disagree please share your stance. #sdedchat
Yes, I agree we need to think differently about our structures in school. The instructional practices still need to be looked at and picked out based on learners needs. #sdedchat
A3: Providing clear expectations (I use the PRIDE framework we have for behavior in our school for classroom behavior & project work), rubric presented up front & students self-score, reflection questions on behavior and learning during project #sdedchat
#sdedchat A4: I believe that blended learning will elevate the teaching and learning in a classroom! We need to look at the needs, where our learners are at, and how we want to help them learn through a variety of blended teaching strategies!
Q4: Truth #1 #blendedlearning can and should elevate, not diminish, what you do best. Do you agree with this truth or disagree please share your stance. #sdedchat
Q5: Truth #2 Instructional practices, pedagogy and academic outcomes must drive technology decisions. Do you agree with this truth or disagree please share your stance. #sdedchat
A4: I think this is true. The struggle I am having right now is that technology has been a crutch for me. I think once I get through #BoldSchool & put in some work this summer then the #blendedlearning in my classroom will be of a much higher quality! #sdedchat
A4: Blended learning can do miracles if taught properly. This generation is way too smart with technology and will become engaged if taught the way they learn. It is the technology generation. #sdedchat
I am excited to see this in action. You have the technology strength now it is just supporting you with some other items and watching this take off! #sdedchat
A5: AGREE! When you start w/ the technology decisions (like everyone having a device just to say you have them) then you end up with digital worksheets & schools banning websites & activities and finding all the things that are wrong with technology (the irony) #sdedchat
It is seriously so awesome to mentally put the puzzle pieces together! I've been struggling the past few years with my SLO and Teacher Obs for how to improve in the areas I lack in. Its like the light bulb finally came on!! #sdedchat
A5: Decisions must be based on data and results or data-driven decisions. Instructional practices and pedagogy must drive technology decisions or instruction. Technology and pedagogy are blended with this generation. #sdedchat
A5: We should not use technology for the sake of technology or because the teacher evaluation tool has a box to check mark if you are using it. We must use it to engage and allow our learners to critically think. #sdedchat
The person that I admire from the blended class mindset is @DMooreSpanish. She always had some great tricks up her sleeve. Miss getting to work with her. #sdedchat
A1) Disagree. Education is due for some upgrades and we're seeing more change today than maybe ever before. Making the focus learning is becoming the norm. #sdedchat
#sdedchat A5: AGREE! If you don’t think this way, the devices will be used at the substitution level!!! We have to always be thinking that if we did not have the tech tool could we still do what we are doing! Redefining learning!
#sdedchat I will be kicking this off with my summer Digital Curriculum Writers Level 1 and 2 on June 4th! Can’t wait to get this info and the book to them! Our district purchased this book for them and to get involved with this book study! Can’t wait!!
A2) if by "old way" we're referring to grading, homework, and sitting in rows then I agree. Keeping students engaged in learning must be the norm today #sdedchat
Yes! Technology is an enhancement, like a secret ingredient that makes a meal great. Too often it is presented like it is the main course. When we operate like that, we are just eating hot sauce or salt packets for dinner. #sdedchat
Q4: Truth #1 #blendedlearning can and should elevate, not diminish, what you do best. Do you agree with this truth or disagree please share your stance. #sdedchat
A5) agree, I think. There is no value in purchasing technology if teachers don't utilize it within their classroom. Forcing technology on staff who lack skill or interest in technology is bad practice #sdedchat
Q5: Truth #2 Instructional practices, pedagogy and academic outcomes must drive technology decisions. Do you agree with this truth or disagree please share your stance. #sdedchat
