Hello to all joining #gtchat! Here from MN, as usual will be dropping in thoughts around supper prep. SEL is a huge area of focus at Twin Cities area school districts, though to various degrees with the GT lens.

Our first question is coming up; let’s get ready to chat! Please preface your responses with A1) Excited to collaborate and share ideas with you today about the social-emotional needs of gifted students! #gtchat
A1) GT students’ social-emotional needs are often exacerbated by asynchronous development which necessitates an awareness of each child’s needs. These include the ability to socialize, work with others, and to be self-aware. #gtchat
Hi #gtchat I'm dr lee-anne gray psychologist, author and educator in Los Angeles. Specialized in #gifted when I was in private practice and testing students.

A1: Perfectionists in that they have hold everything up to an ideal. The concept of meeting someone where they are at has to be modeled and taught. #gtchat
A1) They need to learn the value of struggling with something. Many will do it if there is an extreme passion for the topic, but not for something else that they find doesn't come easily. They too quickly give up or relate the failure to their self-worth. #gtchat
A1) GT kids have innate need to explore big ideas and existential worries, to gain the sense of having been heard and understood without their concerns being dismissed or trivialized #gtchat

A1) We find our son has big reactions to things sometimes - beyond what we expect. We do our best to validate his feelings, while trying to help him cope. This is not always easy and we have lots still to learn. #gtchat
A2) Many gifted children frequently experience the negative consequences of stress and perfectionism as related to the social-emotional characteristics associated with giftedness. #gtchat
A2) High emotional sensitivity can cause gt kids to take things too personally, to internalize criticism, and then end up with low self-esteem and anxiety. #gtchat
A2) Overexcitabilities combined with high intellect and asynchronous development can result in emotional frustration, misbehavior when ability fails to match aspirations, and overall inability to cope with day-to-day functioning. #gtchat
A2) Their tendency to rigidity can affect their ability to make friends and keep them. Their intensities can also hinder social interactions as other children don't understand why they feel so strongly about things. #gtchat

A2) Gifted children are often more intense and sensitive and do not have interests in common with age peers which can lead to being misunderstood. #gtchat
A2) It can be tough to find age peers who want to or who are willing to explore and gnaw on topics of interest with similar depth and intensity, sometimes to the exclusion of everything else. Age peers ridicule, ignore and/or leave out kids who can't let go or shift attn. #gtchat
A2) I see a lot of perfectionism and anxiety issues in my students. I try very hard to instill growth mindset and mindfulness just for those areas. #gtchat
Q3) I grapple with this as a parent. Both kids (Middle & High School) reach bedtime and suddenly introduce existential worries that can't be addressed or soothed in a quick hug and quiet whisper. Couldn't they... you know, start a little earlier in the evening? #gtchat
A3: I found gt by accident. I do full inclusion & wondered about Ss scoring in High 90%. Parent chose us for social reasons. We're a full inclusion campus. #gtchat
A3) Classrooms that are chewing through rote tasks or test prep (especially at this time of year) don't make room for group discussion or giving students space to voice what's inside their minds -- which may disrupt from test readiness anyway! #gtchat
We are already half way through our chat! Thank you for sharing so many inspiring thoughts the social-emotional needs of gifted students! Please remember to use the #gtchat hashtag to participate in the conversation. #gtchat
A3) In an era of changing mindset over the need for provision of services for our most vulnerable students, education of the public and school administrators about the needs of GT students has garnered new importance. #gtchat
This is so important! These students learn differently, so they do not thrive in the classroom. Parents also need to understand giftedness in order to best support gifted specific social-emotional needs. #gtchat

A3) The role of professional development should be expanded to address the social-emotional needs of GT students as it relates to academic success. #gtchat
A3) "How do we meet the social and emotional needs of GT students in a challenging and changing political and educational climate?"
Second part of that question makes it really hard to answer. At least it does to me. #gtchat
A4) The premise for the choice of a specific educational model should be based on the needs of GT students from year to year and be flexible. Check out a previous #gtchat here >>> https://t.co/bhA9icimV7 with extensive resources. #gtchat
A4) #gtchat I have five identified GT students in my class of 23 and I work to meet their needs constantly. I day a week pull out is not enough. I know what to do but many others don’t
A3) I don't have anything to compare to, i.e., my kids are growing up now vs. some other time in history, but the utter chaos, 24hr news cycles, etc., makes for high turmoil, not knowing what to take in or sift out. Quiet of bedtime allows big worries to surface. #gtchat

A4) #gtchat often times the programs are decided by higher up admins who may or may not understand GT kids. It’s very frustrating when social/emotional support is often forgotten
A4: Our classes have always been around 12-13 students. We've had good success! IMO give me a class of 8 Ss & you could get almost anything done! We'll figure the rest out. #gtchat
A4) Pre-assess to test out of material they know, but provide them with something meaty after that. Menus for choice, but these need to be a balance of rigor and something they can do independently. #gtchat
A5) All gifted students should be supported based on their specific needs (academic or personal). It is my role as the gifted teacher to be the go-to support for the classroom teacher and parent so I can advocate, help, and share resources and ideas. #gtchat
A6) GT/2E students are more intense intellectually and emotionally. Educators and professionals may need to provide parents with interventions that can be used at home. #gtchat
A5) Time with mentors, education consultants, psychologists, people who understand them and/or share their interests can help if social/emotional needs are not met in classroom #gtchat
A6) Providing resources for parents to learn more about giftedness: parent seminars, conferences, and parent support groups to start. Also current and relevant articles. Get them involved! #gtchat

A6) Since these students (esp2E) need a lot more support..I do like the idea of possible intervention plans added to their personal education plans. #gtchat
A6) Parents need information about how the role of giftedness plays in a child’s overall well-being to mitigate their own fear of failing as a parent. #gtchat
I am presenting 6 hour workshops on this topic this fall. Contact me if you are interested in me sharing research related to what GT kids needs beyond academic challenge in schools. #gtchat
