#LearnLAP occurs on Mondays starting at 7pm Central Time. Guest moderators and participants discuss topics from author Paul Solarz's book Learn Like a PIRATE.
A1: Using a learning target is the teacher modeling how to set a goal. Having students keep journals or digital reflections is key to tracking! #learnLAP
A1: For my kindergarteners, I support them in beginning goal setting be suggesting 2-3 appropriate goal options and letting them choose which they want to start with - then while conferring individually we check in on goal and make changes as needed. #LearnLAP
A1: I think it's about setting individualized goals that focus on improvement... I want everyone to learn and get better, rather than everyone reach some preselected endpoint. Then it's all about celebrating the individual progress, no matter how small #LearnLAP
A1: Using a learning target is the teacher modeling how to set a goal. Having students keep journals or digital reflections is key to tracking! #learnLAP
A1: This year I am working toward a full workshop model for both reading and writing. I will be able to individually conference with Ss to personalize their learning and set small goals that my Kinders can work on until the next conference. #LearnLAP
A1: I need to carve out time for students to reflect on their learning. I will teach them metacognition strategies. We will demonstrate what it looks like & sounds like. #learnlap
A1 Students need to understand why they need to learn something first and know that it is okay for everyone to be in a different place when it comes to our learning. #LearnLAP
A1 we need to teach them about goals and how to set them and how our short term goals build on our long term goals. Important to stress that they are measurable. Give time for reflection and give the prompts for reflection #learnLAP
Q1 model it! As a class we set goals and reflect often on how we are doing.. make adjustments and keep working. Soon they will be setting individual goals and getting to practice on their own! #LearnLAP
A1 I don’t like to start learning goals too fast, the kids need to get back to working again to be self aware. They need to set their own goals and strategies to have ownership #Learnlap
A1: This year all my Ss will be setting their own reading goals each quarter, recording it in a Flipgrid, and we will revisit next month & then reflect the following month & set new goals. #LearnLAP
A1: First discuss the purpose of goal setting. Make an easily attainable goal so that students can feel accomplishment. Gradually ease into long-term goals with attainable steps. #LearnLAP
A1. We must model what we expect our Ss to do and learn. Start small with goals to build confidence in Ss. Have time arranged to discuss 1:1 about their progress on goals. Self-evaluation and questions to answer though reflection. #learnlap
I’m using standards based grading proficiency scales. They get to see them and the test on day one and again before the test is given to compare before and after. #LearnLAP
A1: I think it's about setting individualized goals that focus on improvement... I want everyone to learn and get better, rather than everyone reach some preselected endpoint. Then it's all about celebrating the individual progress, no matter how small #LearnLAP
A1b such an important topic and something I havent always done the best job of with students. The time spent in prep will pay off huge for them on the back end #learnLAP
A1: IMO goals start with a reflection. There is a great reflection question set from @edutopia that I've used to help stet the stage for goals. https://t.co/rUvHRhSFDx#LearnLAP
A1: Teach them how to make goals and why they are imp! Start with a goal THEY want.. anything.. and help them achieve that goal! Let them feel success. Then as you create edu goals, continue to let them be a part of it and understand their WHY! #learnlap
A1: Also watched a documentary about a high school football team. Each week they set individualized goals and meet with a partner to discuss progress and successes. Looking to incorporate this with my 5th graders #LearnLAP
Hey all! I am a teacher from Durham, NC. Currently doing a master's #MEITE at #UNC This is my first twitterchat! I'm excited to learn from other educators! #LearnLAP
Love the idea of using Flipgrid to help them record/reflect on goals... that's definitely a BIG step up from the sets of sticky notes I have my Ss using!! #learnLAP
A2: Take the time to get to know them! Minimal content for the first day or two, just building connections and relationships with a few procedures snuck into the mix #LearnLAP
A2 Slow it down and take time to get to know our students and build relationships and routines. It will pay off 1000 fold as we go through the year. #LearnLAP
Q2: Setting the learning environment up as a community is important for me so that students know they are all a part of a positive environment. Community meetings! #learnlap
I really like the idea of partners for this. Do you think you will assign partners, or let them choose? I'm thinking about something similar for my 4th-5th graders #learnLAP
A2: As obvious as it may sound, build relationships and set consistent expectations. A scavenger hunt of the syllabus and classroom makes a playful start where Ss don't feel like thy're being talked at all day. #LearnLAP
#learnlap First, get to know students. Interest inventories are one way to do so. What are their interests? Getting to know you is so important. It is a part of differentation that can work for your lessons. A:2
A2: take 1 thing that you are passionate to try and bring it to your room. Reflect on the why, create, and jump in. Don’t be afraid to take a risk. It may be the best thing you ever did! #LearnLAP
I use Google-docs to discuss w/Ss what emotional baggage they bring to class & what they WANT their emotional relationship to be with math. A bit on it here: https://t.co/x4hn24DPsn
"Mathacognition" is this set of reflections we revisit every couple of weeks. #learnlap
A2: Participate! We spend hours building lessons and activities to help students learn about each other and grow a classroom community. Don't forget that they want to know you too! #LearnLAP
A2: We need to take notice of, and bring attention to each child's uniqueness. We need to let everyone know that this is what makes each of us special-unique. It is in accepting these difference that we begin to build that classroom community. #LearnLAP
A2: Allow Ss to decorate & set up their room! Give them ownership & allows them to feel at home in their own space! Sends a HUGE message to them! #LearnLAP
A2. Do a creative activity/project which allows you to build relationships with Ss! i.e. toilet paper activity -take as much as you feel you need, then with each square, say a sentence describing yourself! #learnlap
Hey all! I am a teacher from Durham, NC. Currently doing a master's #MEITE at #UNC This is my first twitterchat! I'm excited to learn from other educators! #LearnLAP
there are so many options for doing fun activities like this, and they still promote key skills of collab, prob solving, communication, SEL and more #learnlap
A2: Whatever it is, it has to be fun! As a music T, I only get 30-minutes the first week to make an impression. We'll do a "getting to know you" activity and then discover the exciting year to come - I ❤️ the scavenger hunt idea! #learnLAP
A2: Relationship building should be the main focus for all educators at the beginning of year: relationships with Ss, with parents, with educators in your building, and with your #PLN - relationships are the key to unlocking so many things throughout the school year! #learnLAP
A1 Set goals together and give times to reflect and revise as needed. If students see you working toward a goal, there’s will make more sense #learnlap
What should we do early on? Ask our Ss about what emotional icebergs they bring to class. What obstacles have they experienced before? What has worked well for them in the past? Help them find their path to success!
Here are my 4 questions: https://t.co/x4hn24DPsn#learnlap
A2 Take at least the first few days to get to know them as people and learners. If you wait to dive into the content, it tells Ss you can about them first! #LearnLAP
A2 Do an about me with your students and share too! Whether it’s facts, visuals, and/or pictures, making the step to introduce you to others matters #learnlap
A2 building relationships and just being present with the students! We have done many of their favorite games like Floor is lava with a twist to turn it into a team building activity! They have built new friendships as well as gained skills to work in a team! #LearnLAP
A3: I am so grateful that “Makerspaces” have become a trend that changed my entire practice! The learning my Ss do in our classroom makerspace is beyond anything else I’ve ever taught in all my years. #LearnLAP
A3: Makerspace, gamification, hyperdocs and SEL come to mind. However, I shy away from any as should since that is when you see the half baked implementation that leads to the "it does not work". Whatever your particular students need is the trend you're looking for. #LearnLAP
As stated in #InnovatorsMindset "The three most important words in education are: relationships, relationships, relationships. Without them, we have nothing." #LearnLAP
Have you seen @lauriesmcintosh DNA bulletin board? I made one for my class this year that looks a lot like hers with Ss individual Dreams Needs Abilities. It was a great way to model for kids (and all the grown ups coming in my room) the special-unique traits of all! #learnLAP
A3: "Rigor," especially when it comes to my little people, makes me cringe!!
I am in love with our KS Commissioner's @KsCommissioner stand on "Play-based Education!" #LearnLAP
Q3 The buzzwords that have meaning to me are “Voice and Choice”. Giving all students a voice, and creating personalized leaning opportunities are powerful. If you are lucky enough to have technology in your classroom, it’s easy to do. #LearnLAP
Frankly, I'd like to see a bit of toning down the buzzwords. The pendulum is a tad reckless. Ideas like "ditch homework" instead of "rethink homework" etc...
There actually WAS good teaching going on 50 yrs ago. Let's find the things that ARE timeless..and update! #learnlap
A3 "student centered" and "student voice" I hesitate to use buzz words with skeptics and naysayers will be the first to roll their eyes. If you just show what it does, they are more willing to be receptive to the newness #learnlap
Our Back to School - Beginning of School pages filled with lots of great tips and tricks to get the learning year off to a great start. https://t.co/YIn8g6nxkm#LearnLAP
As stated in #InnovatorsMindset "The three most important words in education are: relationships, relationships, relationships. Without them, we have nothing." #LearnLAP
Do you think the commonality is that they are all ways to promote collaboration, communication, critical thinking, creativity, problem solving and purposeful learning? #learnlap
A4: Some of the negativity... Twitter is an amazing place to combat that but on a daily basis I feel like I'd be a very different teacher if I were around other positive and enthusiastic teachers all day #LearnLAP
A3 cont: Anything that you feel apssoinate about and that are doing in the best interest of the kids is what you should do, regardless of buzzwords or trends. #LearnLAP
I'd really like to see the words "empowered" and "choice" and "alternative assessment" applied to TEACHERS and the craft of teaching/evaluating, not just to students in the classroom. These things are true for PEOPLE, not just Ss! #learnlap
A4 for the educators of today to me the time machines that will connect us to the future where individualized learning and an eye on the future directs our content and activities #learnLAP
A4 I would change the fear some teachers have to try new things and give them the confidence to trust their students and not be afraid of making mistakes along the way. #LearnLAP
A4: I would eliminate the fear of failure as a barrier for taking risks for teachers and students. I would clone myself so I could be in every classroom every day as an instructional coach to support Ts in their efforts to step outside of their comfort zone. #LearnLAP
A2: Learning-specific ice-breaker - The first thing I teach is shop safety --> safety icebreaker - we find out who has done / or knows what. Q's include injured running w/scissors? Who can explain... SDS, PASS, EMI, et al. Then discuss. #LearnLAP
A4 Always want more space for students to expand where they choose to work/learn and collaborate together, have seen so many unique, creative learning spaces #learnlap
A4 If I could change one thing, I’d love to be able to jump in and support all without all the red tape. Being in special ed has its perks and difficulties. #learnlap
A4: The only real one that comes to me is quiet/tidy=learning. Of course I'm not advocating for a free for all, but rather for controlled chaos. #LearnLAP
If I could change one thing, I'd be able to turn down/off the fans for the AC. They are permanently on and so loud that I can't hear my soft-spoken Ss. I feel like I have to yell to be heard. Small things. They matter. (Also....1st world problem, tbh) #learnlap
Question 5 is here!here are many creativity tools which promote imagination and visual communication, for example.
Share some of your favorite beginning of the year projects or activities
#LEARNLAP#edtech#4OCFPLN
yes, it sure would, not always about the fanciest, priciest items, but sometimes we need to make wise purchases that we know will lead to powerful learning experiences #learnlap
A4: Really try to work cross-curricular. I teach engineering, but I feel it's a great chance to show importance of so many other subjects and how they relate. It's also fun and engaging. #Learnlap
A5 Enjoy having Ss create and About Me with @buncee or use tools like @nearpod to have Ss interact with content and use some of the awesome lessons in the library #learnlap
A5 One thing I love doing at the beginning of the year is having students make an All About Me video using @Animoto I do one as well and we share. Great way of getting to know each other. #LearnLAP
A5: Simply allowing students to use technology or whatever creative lane they would like to make something to introduce themselves to the class. #Adobe#Chromebook#learnLAP
A5: On the first day we did the #tlap play doh activity and it was a huge success! We also play Lines and Blobs (one of my favorite games), and did a fun #wodb project to encourage problem solving and get them collaboratijg! #LearnLAP
Question 5 is here!here are many creativity tools which promote imagination and visual communication, for example.
Share some of your favorite beginning of the year projects or activities
#LEARNLAP#edtech#4OCFPLN
A5 And a big part of the first few days is having Ss build relationships, diff ice breakers, I take time to get to know them, have some fun learning together #learnlap
A5. Puzzle pieces-Where Ss understand uniqueness, individuals. Their piece fits together in a puzzle in a class=family, class-school, school-world, differences, how we meet people of different cultures, get along together? #learnlap
A5: On the first day we did the #tlap play doh activity and it was a huge success! We also play Lines and Blobs (one of my favorite games), and did a fun #wodb project to encourage problem solving and get them collaboratijg! #LearnLAP

Before #learnlap ends, be sure to "follow" the educators here who have inspired, affirmed, and/or challenged you tonight! Stay connected with those who can propel you upwards!
We had every staff memeber fill out an identity chart and we plan to post them through the school. Could see several folks taking that idea and using it in their class as well. #LearnLAP
Question 6: We know that technology is not always the answer, but it can be a catalyst for learning, for motivating students and for creativity. #LEARNLAP#edtech
Have you personally had any experiences where tech made the difference for you?
A5: We use Design Thinking to begin to work in our Makerspace. Last year the challenge was a roller coaster. This year teams will build the ultimate treehouse. Cardboard, tape, and teamwork is the best tools for imagination and creativity in my opinion. #LearnLAP
A6: Absolutely! Our experiences with #ARVRinEDU has motivated Ss and created authentic learning environments they would have never had otherwise. It's been amazing to see our Ss engage in experiences with our @htcvive#LearnLAP
A5: I plan to have Ss create their own name tags for their music stands (instead of me making) to introduce themselves. Only 30 min/week, so have to be creative with time! #learnLAP
I use tech a lot in my classroom, one of my favorites is classnotebook, I can embed everything there, use kahoot, socrative, Smart responders, use the TIM and SAMR to guide choices
#LearnLAP
Question 6: We know that technology is not always the answer, but it can be a catalyst for learning, for motivating students and for creativity. #LEARNLAP#edtech
Have you personally had any experiences where tech made the difference for you?
A6 Definitely, has helped me to give feedback faster, immerse Ss in AR/VR learning environments, but also lets them create in unique ways, we learn about them #learnlap
Q6 I started using a lot more tech a few years ago when I realized I could use it to assess more often, provide immediate and detailed feedback to Ss, and incorporate more fun into learning. I was like WIN_WIN_WIN!!! #LearnLAP
Question 6: We know that technology is not always the answer, but it can be a catalyst for learning, for motivating students and for creativity. #LEARNLAP#edtech
Have you personally had any experiences where tech made the difference for you?
A6 today as an administrator technology such as google docs, and YouTube have allowed for us to more readily share with one another as well as flip meetings to focus more of our time on what is best for kids #learnLAP
A6: 3D Printing and design has made a huge impact in our engineering classroom, but can make an impact in other classrooms too. So much nicer to see and touch a product you've created. #Learnlap
A6: research sites like Wonderopolis and SchoolTube have been a wonderful resource for our Genius Hour projects so my emerging kinder readers can have the information read to them. #LearnLAP
A6: Simple as it may seem: Google Classroom! Posting announcements, assignments, or providing students a space where they can communicate with their peers about something... love it! #learnLAP
A6 I still think one of the coolest thing about technology is our ability to share and collaborate with others. I love doing mystery skypes and absolutely love @globalreadaloud#LearnLAP
A6b one trend I have seen over the last year after going 1:1 is we get homework from kids in a more timely manner, less late assignments and more engagement in classrooms #learnLAP
A6 I work with a variety of students with different needs. Apps and add ons that allow for the writing to be typed are huge! Tech is a game changer when introduced well. #learnlap
A6: Tech has definitely helped! Ss can learn at their own pace, have tools to support learning and the ability to share their voices. Plus, @Flipgrid has been a game-changer! So many ways I've used it to engage/empower Ss & collaborate! 🎶 #learnLAP
A6. I did a video project where the Ss answered questions about science exp. to get them to think beyond the exp., What if's, What might happen, what happened? To help Ss remember better in learning. They enjoyed doing it! #learnlap
That is a great list, some of my Ss really liked creating with @BookCreatorApp as well! and definitely @buncee , especially with the new updates! #learnlap
In reply to
@LindaEdwardsi, @Buncee, @Flipgrid, @Seesaw, @BookCreatorApp, @poppletny, @padlet, @BookCreatorApp, @Buncee
My first in-depth experience using google docs and hangout 6 years ago during graduate school flipped my mindset on the power of digital collaboration. #LearnLAP
A6: Video reflections w/ @Flipgrid helped my Ss find their voice (and gave me the time to hear all of them!) Looking to incorporate a podcast/audio option this year. We have chromebooks, what are user-friendly options? #LearnLAP
Question 7: There are many resources including books, blog posts, podcasts and videos to gather new ideas for our practice.
What are your ”go-to” resources or what is something you have recently found that you can share? #learnlap
Podcasts have been helpful. Twitter has been phenomenal. Speaking at conferences has helped me meet so many other folks. Great to see what others are doing and share what I'm doing. #Learnlap
A7 I think every teacher needs to read and use the Growth Mindset that book coupled with TLAP is an absolute game changer for veterans and rookie teachers alike #learnLAP
A7 I spent a majority of my summer reading & connecting with the amazing authors from @dbc_inc. Connecting on twitter and gaining ideas from my PLN daily is awesome! So many great ideas out there. #learnlap
A7 My favorite place to hang out is twitter of course. I recently started following @TeachWriteEDU for support with writing. I am sharing this wonderful little video shared on twitter at our assembly tomorrow. https://t.co/O1RUbsZrBO#LearnLAP
#learnlap A7: A friend just posted this article that I thought was great on the growth mindset and the reading/writing classroom. Enjoy! https://t.co/QP9DVHzp3q
Question 7: There are many resources including books, blog posts, podcasts and videos to gather new ideas for our practice.
What are your ”go-to” resources or what is something you have recently found that you can share? #learnlap
A7 Coming in late... busy night of prep. I found #tlap this summer (reread it today) and then a host of others—#xplap#REALedu#ShiftThis#TeacherMyth—all will be utilized and within arms reach for reference #learnLAP is up next for me
Question 7: There are many resources including books, blog posts, podcasts and videos to gather new ideas for our practice.
What are your ”go-to” resources or what is something you have recently found that you can share? #learnlap
Been working more on "framing" a problem so that students are more engaged, excited, and ask questions so they can see themselves as a real-world problem solver. #Learnlap
A7: I've been reading all of the @dbc_inc books this summer, in order of release and planning to implement at least one thing from each book. It has been an amazing journey. I'm on book 37! #LearnLAP was number 4: https://t.co/6jHqQM81Gg#DBC50Summer
Last question of the night! How can we help Students to worry less about "points" or the "grade", and instead focus on the learning process and develop a Growth Mindset?
#learnlap
A8: Focus on the growth and not the grade as a teacher, and that will begin the shift. Highly recommending checking out #ShiftThis for more on shifting this mindset using small changes. https://t.co/cD4eLz30HW#LearnLAP
A8: Having a student self-grade as part of the final score. Also, continuously asking questions to students as they do their work. Let them know the learning is more important than the grade and to be patient as a teacher and student. #Learnlap
A8: MODEL. And be REAL. I always acknowledge that I will make mistakes and it's important because I learn from them. Finding comfort in the struggle and actually letting kids struggle sometimes is okay! #learnLAP
This right here is my lifelong mission! Every child should believe that they are capable of "IT"
Don't grade the practice, give them multiple chances to demonstrate learning, and don't let a child believe that they can't get it. Always add the work YET!!!! #LearnLAP
Last question of the night! How can we help Students to worry less about "points" or the "grade", and instead focus on the learning process and develop a Growth Mindset?
#learnlap
A8 Make learning a journey! Every mistake and upset is a part of the journey. While growth mindset plays a part, we have to be real with students in front of us every day! #learnlap
A8: I feel like points and grades come to the forefront when they lack confidence in their own abilities. I'm hoping that emphasizing personal growth and goal setting (and obviously real world applications of what we're doing/why) will change our class for the bettwr #LearnLAP
Last question of the night! How can we help Students to worry less about "points" or the "grade", and instead focus on the learning process and develop a Growth Mindset?

For now, check out #tlap for more great discussion!
A4 - The feeling that I have to try new ways of doing things...if it's shiny and pretty, it must be great? Not always.
Also, myths of ed need to go:
learning styles
the learning pyramid
left/right brain hemisphere stuff
65% of kids will have jobs that don't exist
#learnlap
If you're around Twitter tomorrow (Tuesday) at 7pm Central, please join @KRScienceLady for #5thchat as we discuss integrating "Speaking, Reading & Writing into Science & Social Studies." All grades welcome!
#LearnLAP
A8 focus more on objectives and building on each one. Celebrates growth a poor performance isn’t the end it’s the beginning. Model how to deal with adversity. Share with them stories about those that never give up #learnLAP
