Leaders aren't just wearing Administrator badges! We are all leaders in our building - and we need to be sure to act as such. Leaders listen, learn, guide and grow daily. #sunchat
Good leaders don’t stand in the way, they allow those they lead to create, thrive, and share in leading the organization. Good leaders acknowledgethat they don’t know everything and ask for help when they need it #sunchat

Characteristics of a good leader? Empathetic, willing to challenge others, willing to challenge themselves, values their ears as much as their voice, and the list goes on #sunchat
I think good ed. leaders need to be innovative, not stuck in the “this is the way it’s always been done” mentality, and be willing to try new things. #sunchat
At its core, I think good leadership is about empowering others. Otherwise, you are creating a culture of one (the leader) that has little sustainability. #sunchat
A: A good leader is someone who is willing to step up and take charge. Someone who is willing to take one for the team and cares for the other members of the group. Good leaders are organized and know how to get the job done. #sunchat
Leaders have strong values and moral compass. Their actions and decisions are very intentional and the result are lots of consultation and input from people surrounding them.
#sunchat
Expanding on empowerment: Empowering others to take risks, showing that they are trusted, challenging them to take the next step, valuing their thoughts, asking for feedback, etc. #sunchat

Leadership is not a title and too often a leader forgets that we are in the profession for the students! We must work to improve and lead together and for the most important part of education the students! #sunchat
Leaders also need to be willing to step up and make the difficult decision when it is called for. I get frustrated when leaders are wishy-washy. Gather all of the feedback, then choose a direction and set the vision! #sunchat
One thing that might limit our convos - Since context IS important, let's acknowledge the type of leaders we are all drawn to might not be what the typical teacher wants. We're not necessarily the typical educators -- I mean look how choose to spend our weekends #sunchat
A1: Leadership is a calling that is available to everyone. You feel called when you know that you want to work to fix or innovate an idea, process, or system! #sunchat
In my classroom:
1. The noise level is LOUDER.
2. Students work COLLABORATIVELY.
3. I am a GUIDE on the RIDE.
4. Learners are EMPOWERED.
5. Technology is used to CREATE.
6. Diversity is EMBRACED.

Good leaders are paradoxical chameleons: on one hand, transforming to offer what each situation needs; on other hand, maintaining integrity & steadfast vision. #sunchat
Good leaders are first and foremost good listeners. They seek clarity in all that they do by asking everyone's input and looking at things from different perspectives.
#sunchat
"Lots of consultation and input" is key here. Leaders need to totally understand the stakeholders and possible outcomes before making directives.... #sunchat
Leaders have strong values and moral compass. Their actions and decisions are very intentional and the result are lots of consultation and input from people surrounding them.
#sunchat
Leadership is anyone—regardless of role—who takes an idea and runs with it. The abundance or lack of barriers depends on the degree of leadership from those above. #sunchat
Good leaders are paradoxical chameleons: on one hand, transforming to offer what each situation needs; on other hand, maintaining integrity & steadfast vision. #sunchat
Being a good listener is at the top of the list when thinking about what makes a good leader. Listening, and then taking the time to thinking about something, respond, - communicate effectively. #sunchat

The best leaders remember where they came from, why they are in this profession, and let that guide them to do their work on behalf of those they serve. #servantleadership#sunchat
This may apply a bit more to admins, but leaders need to be visible. In the crooms, in the hallways, as often as possible. Mad respect for those admins who use “the cart”! #sunchat
A good leader is willing to do what is right and challenge status quo. You must get feedback and listen to all stakeholders, but can’t allow everlasting conversation to be the impediment to progress and actions. #sunchat
A2) You make your own opportunity. If it were easy, anyone could do it. Your unique talents and attributes guide you to your unique opportunities - if you are paying attention. #SpiritChat
I do have to say, I’ve had some people tease me about waking up to talk to people I’ve never met irl on twitter early on Sunday mornings 😂😂they don’t know what they are missing out on
When I think of leaders the same people always come to mind. Their skill sets are very different but they all have the ability to connect with people. #sunchat
Absolutely! I constantly share articles, research, and new ideas with staff. We often discuss and figure out how to implement different things into our learning community. #sunchat

A good leader understands the journey and is prepared to offer support and guidance for those that need it. Encouragement and listening for those who are not sure and empathy for everyone else #sunchat
I remember those first ‘active listening’ exercises and how awkward it was to practice. But it is key to validate others. Kind of reminded me of ‘wait time’ for students. Need to ‘hear’ what is being said. #sunchat
It does! I think leaders (how about people in general ;) ) need to spend more time thinking how they can be better listeners and then practicing it. #sunchat
Good gem, Jeremy. That last bit about 'paying attention' held extra sparkle for my eyes. Also source of frustration given frequent inundation of inputs, Demands effective filters to support prioritizing attention. #sunchat
My Leadership page https://t.co/mYagW5Bil2 A title doesn't automatically annoint 1 as a leader Leadership is comprised of a dynamic mix of behaviors, mindset & skills which are used to move people where a leader wants them to be for the betterment of the org @E_Sheninger#sunchat
Wow. That is such a good point. I think we say we are listening by asking people to do surveys or chalk talks. However, many leaders don’t do anything w/the info so you didn’t listen #sunchat
I try to model it! I listen constantly, but at some point what you hear needs to be turned into action. That’s when you show your true value as a leader. #sunchat
Listening is something visible- you can tell when someone is really listening to what you have to say. And we have to make sure we are listening to hear, not necessarily respond. #sunchat
I also find myself wondering about how we hold leaders to a high standard (and rightly so). Is there grace for coming back from a poor leadership decision or experience? How can we develop that in conjunction with wanting our leaders to be amazing? #sunchat
Perhaps not a leader in title but his skills and attitude in the execution could provide inspiration and direction to those working by his side! #sunchat
It needs to be made a priority. Makes me think about what I do with my Ss - we practice - learn discussions "stems," practice taking turns listening/talking, repeating what others say etc Everyone needs to be doing it. #sunchat
A2) You make your own opportunity. If it were easy, anyone could do it. Your unique talents and attributes guide you to your unique opportunities - if you are paying attention. #SpiritChat
I think evals have become this scary thing, and also a bit one-sided. I think leadership means visibility and that we want evaluate to become more than just something done once a year. We should be evaluating constantly. #sunchat
I think a great leader makes sacrifices first. I remember when we had to do huge budget cuts a few years ago. Our former sup @springer_karl took a $25K paycut first. #sunchat
I think so. We have to model for colleagues and Ss that you are still a viable part of the community of learners even when you make a mistake. Learning from mistakes equals growth! #sunchat
I also find myself wondering about how we hold leaders to a high standard (and rightly so). Is there grace for coming back from a poor leadership decision or experience? How can we develop that in conjunction with wanting our leaders to be amazing? #sunchat
So, a mixture of both? I tend to see leadership as a combination of innate traits that are utilized or straightened through actions (or behaviors). I don't think everyone can be a great leader. if they could, how do explain charisma? #sunchat
A2) You make your own opportunity. If it were easy, anyone could do it. Your unique talents and attributes guide you to your unique opportunities - if you are paying attention. #SpiritChat
Great point. I try to get into classrooms as much as possible. My formal observation shouldn’t be the first or last time in a classroom. I want to know the teachers and their kids. Constant visibility helps. #sunchat
This may apply a bit more to admins, but leaders need to be visible. In the crooms, in the hallways, as often as possible. Mad respect for those admins who use “the cart”! #sunchat
I think it is both. I love these two books by John Maxwell, international known for leadership, 21 Laws of leadership (behavior) and 21 qualities of leadership (trait). #sunchat
Agree with this, I still teach when I can and work closely with some schools. It is easier to lead with understanding if you still really know what the problems are. #sunchat

Boom! The key should always be improvement! But we’ve all got to be comfortable with evaluation, and that includes admins. A school in which you feel comfortable with discussing improvement is one where genuine improvement likely happens! #sunchat
Good leaders don’t stand in the way, they allow those they lead to create, thrive, and share in leading the organization. Good leaders acknowledgethat they don’t know everything and ask for help when they need it #sunchat
Leadership is not a position but simply influence. I am no longer the department chair but my influence in the building still resonates. Can’t shake it off. I’ve tried #sunchat
That's a good point. The way I see it, one's traits will effect certain behaviors. If someone is empathetic & truly cares for others, that same person will probably behave different than someone who lacks empathy & does not put relationships 1st. #sunchat
NFL faced tough year, as new poll numbers shows league losing core audience over anthem protests. @PeteHegseth talked to fans at @mallofamerica, see what they think.
As I’ve transitioned over the years from teacher to school leader, I’ve confirmed I am first and foremost a teacher... now I am a teacher of adults. However, my teaching/leading goes hand-in-hand with my learning. #sunchat
Good question. This can be mitigated by empowering others to become part of the solution. Invite and expect them to participate in the learning and the problem solving #sunchat
@tiffanytruitt I think leadership can be SO contextually bound. My best leader might not work in your setting - some folks can jump settings, but finding your best fit leadership niche is great too! #sunchat
Take a few moments to do this Solar Plexus Chakra exercise. Your solar plexus is your third #chakra, just above the navel. Feel the warmth, feel your strength and confidence rise. Carry forth this positive energy with you into your day. ☀️

Wouldn't touting/fostering growth mindsets in younger learners & shelving that lens for older leaders be hypocritical? Can't experiences be excellent teachers for all ages? Are there (non-criminal) mistakes that qualify as unforgivable? #sunchat
Your actions don’t allow this to happen. Show that you are fallible and people see that you are@human like anyone else. Then expectations become realistic #sunchat
Looking forward to this chat next week! We’ve had a lot of pre-service Ts joining us! So what can we share? This could get interesting! #sunchat@INSPIREatIU
Agreed, Tami. As for charisma, it’s worth asking whether leadership can be quiet and unassuming. That person may sometimes effect more change than the one with charisma. #LiveQuiet#sunchat
I think this is the goal, not always sure it's the reality. More leadership = more influence = consequences can be greater, but we are all learners!
#sunchat
I guess it depends on your definition of leadership. I don't think everyone can be great being up front, but their leadership can extend out in other ways. #sunchat

Morning, my #sunchat peeps! Checking in a bit late from TX since I was enthralled by reading! A great leader is one who encourages others to do what is best for kids. One who is in the trenches withers and Ss and inspires EVERYONE in the school #sunchat
Your last question is so deep @brianrozinsky! My initial thought is no because it is non-criminal. They are the kind I commit the most. However, the person who received the offense may not think so. Gotta chew on that one. #sunchat

@brianrozinsky, @Ms_A_Yeh, @brianrozinsky
Dollars & cents issue, too. More money to exert influence means less patience when things go (even temporarily) sideways. Reminds me of behavioral psych book w/economics tie-in called _Predictably Irrational_. Label could also apply to some leader/follower dynamics. #sunchat
#sunchat The best teachers are risk-takers…Therefore leaders need to cultivate an environment that nurtures the risk-taker in teachers, supporting them so they have the comfort to do so. #EdLeadership
I figure dialogue is good starting point, rather than just sitting & stewing over actual or perceived mistake. That's why practices founded in restorative justice appeal to me. #sunchat
I think that good leaders lead by example and model what they expect from others. We can't expect children to take the lead if they have never been shown how.#sunchat
A great leader can transform the culture of a school.people can feel it as they walk in the door.I have worked under several leaders throughout my career; some were good, others lacked leadership skills. My current leader @monica_m_munoz is the best I have worked with! #sunchat
This is why I love you! Restorative justice is my new jam. Given our current climate as a nation, I think it needs to become a requirement in schools. Hope it spills over into society. Has your school implemented it? #sunchat
What a truly thought provoking chat this morning! I’ll be mulling over all of this for awhile. Hope you will all join us next we as we welcome preservice teachers to #sunchat
When thinking of leaders, something that is very unbecoming is when the person only has things 2 teach and show others, but never to learn from anyone else. A great leader is humble enough to say he or she doesn't yet know/do something,&is willing to learn from others. #sunchat
Great #sunchat as always. Hate I will miss next week. I will be flying at the time of the chat. Thanks again for a wonderful conversation in just 30 minutes.
Great leaders are great listeners, especially with Ss.They encourage Ts to be their best everyday and make time to address those crucial topics holding us back as educators. They're advocates for our Ss and want the best for them! #sunchat
I wish, John. My foundations have come from reading books like _Setting Limits in the Classroom_, w/ love & logic principles, and working in school w/off-label positive behavior support focus. https://t.co/pHOQ2XO0NPhttps://t.co/A0GMH6NIu4#sunchat
Oh wow. I have never heard of that for an admin. Lots of presence, but cannot imagine doing that. I have heard of mobile office where they set up in different places on some days. #sunchat
Yes. It should be a bit difficult to pin down where leaders are because they won't always be in their office, but in classrooms or out in the halls with Ts and Ss! Ours even does lunch duty daily and visits each class once a month for a Principal Read Aloud! #sunchat
Where I teach, more mindset & several little pieces (like being mindful to recognize students positively; making reflection part of disciplinary process) than full-blown formal RJ program. How's the jam tasting so far where you are? #sunchat
The whole purpose of eval should be to see the feedback as what you can do to grow as an educator. No one should ever be "done"; there is always room for improvement, especially since the Ss we teach aren't the same Ss as in yrs past. technology has changed our lives! #sunchat
Thanks for the thoughts, #sunchat. I appreciate you all as learning leaders in this virtual space who then carry away digital seeds to plant back in actual spaces.
That looks like a great start! Thank you! Perhaps we need a chat on the subject? I feel like it comes up in several chats I've been a part of but never has been the core topic... Perhaps I missed it. #sunchat
