NOW Topic: What does an accomplished administrator in the 21st Century look like?
An accomplished admin builds a supportive PLN to help stay current.
Hi Maura, Great to have you join tonight -- what qualities define a top notch education leader?
Poking my head into tonight.
Brian, HS principal from Mass.
Hey my name is Danielle and I'm excited to participate in

Accomplished admins must up their presentation game. PPt with bulleted lists and dull speaking is too common.
Hi Brad Jump in Topic: What does an accomplished administrator in the 21st Century look like?
To start, an accomplished administrator in the 21st C is empathetic, kind, and inclusive.
Great educators are same as three decades ago - current, relevant, striving to be their best and moving kids forward. Every Day
Hi Brian, welcome to . I also teach in MA. What do you think is a most important quality for a 21st C admin?
“Code enables us to solve problems that would otherwise be beyond our capacity” https://t.co/E4dbAc5x7p The case for coding in schl.
Welcome Kevin ... to Topic: What does an accomplished administrator in the 21st Century look like?
Topic is very broad. What I do as a boarding school dean vs. a public school principal is wide gulf. Many other roles, too.
Hi! I think that a top notch ed leader has passion, is a good example, and cares for students and teachers.
Hi Nancy, as an admin, how do you develop your PLN? What protocols lead your work in that regard?
Learners who allow their Ts to take risks
Admins must create a culture of trust. Trust that relationships count and have lasting impact. Community, ts and Ss
In my world: the connectors of the school. Vision, practice, experiences, community
Thank PJ... sorry, but gotta ask, how's that working for folks?
": Great educators are same as three decades ago - current, relevant, striving to be their best and moving kids forward. "
IF highest aim of a principal is to meet standards and hit performance goals then she will fall short of both.

How about 4Cs:
compassionate
connected
calming
charismatic
I think that administrators are supposed to help a school district run efficiently and help the students be successful!
In fairness, that describes an accomplished admin in any century. :)
what's common to both and would be lacking in either?
Hi Brian --> jump in Topic: What does an accomplished administrator in the 21st Century look like?
What math chats for elementary are out there worth following?
Im an experienced Teaching Principal/Leader of many years and I lookmlike everyone else
if today is anything to go by…they want us to provide snow days 😂Right and ?
Again, the same. Outstanding for some and not for others. Evolution is needed - but DNA of great ones the same.
A1: accomplished administrators helps schools run efficiently and help kids work to be their best
Leadership is much more about the people you serve than the things you manage.
An accomplished 21st admin is one that has done something different than before. Driving the train onto a new track for kids sake
Agree PJ, Wondering if today's tech and PLNs allow us to go deeper, use better process to develop our collective craft.
: to begin, how about these 4Cs:
compassionate
connected
calming
charismatic
Makes sense... why don't we do what you suggest? Thoughts?
Erik, tell us more--what do you use for presentations? I want to know more.
I develop my PLN thru online connections & F2F interactions at conferences & w/in my district.
I think it makes it easier for those who want to be great - and sometimes distracts others.
Thanks and what do you as a teacher need from your administrator?
ACCEPT blame, reject acclaim…and other will follow you.
Compassion, patience, and problem-solving skills important in my role.
I'm a big fan of "servant leadership" Brad--that mindset has made a positive difference in the way I teach.
As an experienced Teaching Principal /Leader I look like you all but years of experience makes me different
I'm always so thankful when our school leader steps in to help so we can continue to teach-very sensitive, thoughtful
Indeed, vision matters... Gotta ask: vision of what?
It is always easier to ride the horse in the direction it is already going. YEARS of This Is How We Do It.

I think that support and access to resources are things that teachers need from administrators
Those qualities would serve every leader and those they lead well.
Thrilled to have you here tonight. I cited your work today during PLC w/tchrs.
Great start, grow from there...
A1: good admin fills each classroom with a quality T that has Ss best interest in mind, then provides supports when needed
A1: be a leader who wants to build individual capacity. Coach it.
FORGET about what doesn’t work, search for things and people who do.
Maura, yes--very important. Love it when the admin makes conferences, new resources available.
Yay! Valuing the #1 language art, speaking!! Thanks!
A1: An accomplished 21st cent admin doesn't do things the way "they have always been done". S/he recognizes the new reality.
Do you generally do that in a public forum like Twitter or in another way?
hi. This. Is Sarah from Miami. A good Admin is flexible & strives to understand his/her teachers
PRINCIPALS WHO MAKE problems interesting soon find that solutions are forthcoming…
definitely a fair observation! We need to step up as educators and give our students confidence in STEM!
It isn't so much WHAT is used as HOW. For instance, NEVER use bullet points in a slide.
what kids need now & what kids will need
Maura, you're on fire--so many terrific ideas!!!!
Great leaders see others for greater than they see themselves.
All principals can think, the really good ones think big, and the great ones think about others. What do you think about?
Vision for honoring humanity, connecting learning to life.
As an experienced leader I have the wisdom and vision to make decisions.I embrace quality teaching.I detest useless workbooks
Replace a faculty meeting. Admin puts up a prompt on Flipgrid; faculty replies when motivated to.
Should carpet time still be a part of lessons in Year 6 (10/11 year old students) ?
Do you also have a real time professional circle of other leaders or a mix of eds, leaders. . .
An accomplished admin knows & understands curriculum & instruction while modeling effective instructional practices.
a1: a good leader is one who is in the trenches, not watching! A cheerleader!
Another example of "no one size fits all" - we all have to be sensitive to our context, colleagues.
The measure of a man is what he does with power. - Plato
A leader knows which decisions to:
1) keep
2) share
3) give away
& emphasizes #'s 2 & 3.
I think about potentially striving to create a better academic environment for my students!
teachers learning & kids learning
Use Photo Booth or your webcam to make a small video to share. We don't have to be there.
Absolutely. What is risky and innovative for some is common everyday practice for others. Differentiate leadership
Both. I like accessing a wide range of edus but have a circle of leaders I rely upon.
As Principal I am planning a new STEAM room to open in 3 weeks .STEM is the new curriculum.I am thinking byond the book companies
Should model what we want to instill. If you want Ts to embrace technology, YOU embrace it & include it.
I'm teach how to graph quadratic functions to 9th graders. Any suggestions?
Great leaders embrace conflict for the good of the organization and do not constantly seek harmony.
Yes, it's great when a leader is present, transparent, collaborative.
They lead conversation by asking questions and challenging. They are connected. They model and inspire!
As an educator, it’s important to think about how to help each student achieve and grow individually
sometimes change is definitely necessary in order to become more successful in the classroom!
How did you do this, Neil--I want to make a Twitter poll.
Don't forget Admins need to realize Ts are human beings...nurture the heart and soul of school ....we all thrive together!
Have you watched how Saul Khan explains this on Khan Academy--that's a go to place for me.
What characteristics best define a modern, innovative, relevant, etc academic program?
They remember being a student & how it feels - mentally, physically, intellectually, professionally, etc.
I strive to do this every single day.
Accomplished admin...learning leader, humble, deep thinker, co-walks the journey, a challenger, respectful listener, peace-maker.
Great leaders seek outcomes over accolades and put results above ego.
Distance covered by a car at constant acceleration.
This is so important. Our admin started collaborative Friday Memo--everyone is welcome to add imp. notes--works well.
That's awesome, Kevin. An admin in my system did that--great place for the community to share, invent.
Also, who is teaching admin how to raise the bar? Not one ed PhD program has any element of how to present well.
Do you and your group of leaders meet regularly? I'm thinking about how we deepen the work we do.
Like teachers with their students... the best administrators do more listening than talking.
I wonder about this too--how do admin grow, find their inspiration?

so true... You ready to start a graduate school for school amin wannabes?
serious issue, too little attention...
THINGS CHANGE and change and change…so learn to anticipate the unexpected. Do your leaders expect the unexpected? How so?
Sometimes when I'm teaching something new I start with Khan Academy--then I replicate the lesson in class.
Note how high communication skill is on the list...
Great point! It's important for both administrators and teachers to listen! https://t.co/UHtvkpSs7d
Like teachers with their students... the best administrators do more listening than talking.
I think it depends on the scenario, some do, but some need to be visionary for the future.
Hope all would have paid dues and gained some seasoning. Don't need inauthentic leaders.
PASSION, EXCELLENCE…enough with worthless words…be real, speak clearly, seek to connect or stay silent. You agree?
Thriving in ambiguity is a mindset shift for most school leaders. Important tool to add to skill set. https://t.co/ewqcoleay5
THINGS CHANGE and change and change…so learn to anticipate the unexpected. Do your leaders expect the unexpected? How so?
Change SHOULD be occurring all around us in education, but sound strategies such as teaching critical thought still essential.
If you're participating in tonight, tell us how long you've been in education:
I just want to be invited to start a class. I have seen great ideas DOA because of poor presentation.
At an international school the unexpected is almost a given. Perk: unexpected = no documents or meetings about it?
Growth is an individual choice. As a leader I can influence it, but not control.
if someone wants their opinion brought to light and wants to make a difference, they need to speak up.
Our group of local leaders meet regularly; other I meet when opportunity pops up.
I believe that attending conferences w/ other admin can be valuable for example https://t.co/emryk6gl0c
I wonder about this too--how do admin grow, find their inspiration?
Expect the unexpected by being prepared! Always have a plan B and be willing to listen to other people’s ideas
Yes, I really look forward to our admin's Friday memo.
Critical thinking. I get it: the salesperson was good & the gadget was cool. But how much stuff is sitting on shelves unused?
Had this convo with an admin last wk. Most admin never take a "how to present to faculty" class. Needed? https://t.co/wz53kezulc
Also, who is teaching admin how to raise the bar? Not one ed PhD program has any element of how to present well.
As leaders actions speak louder than words.Lets lead by example, empathise ,support, listen to staff.Appreciate efforts say WELLDONE
Can influence and can model, but not control...
Tonight's poll How many years have you been working in ed?
Such an important part of our day! So fun to share a book together and excite reluctant readers. https://t.co/6RQopJulsa
Presenting well is so important. I’m very thankful my PL experiences honed some skills.
I like, "How to present w/ faculty & Ss". "How to listen & empower them to lead the way."
Collaboration & group work are great, but don't forget about those who struggle in those situations. https://t.co/z1OPoChx8U
So many. A great admin hosts conversations and engages audiences! How many initiatives fail bc of buy-in? https://t.co/tQlZ0puPXm
Absolutely critically needed. How many ideas die due to the lack of these skills? Many...
My education experience:
Teacher: 16 years
Principal/Leadership: 15 years
Hello Mark! Great to be back to learn from you and ! Disagree passion is worthless word. Isn't it heart and soul? :)
The best learning is often humbling.
Since 1983, but I took 8 yrs off in the 90s & 7 yrs off recently. Very rejuvenating breaks to gain valuable experience.
Who's in for teaching this course? :) https://t.co/FFKSpPTpz0
I like, "How to present w/ faculty & Ss". "How to listen & empower them to lead the way."
Just today I told an admin intern that you need to “sell it” not impose it or mandate it (whatever “it” is)
A lot of the PD that I create allows space for conversations like this.
1 of our new methods for engaging Ts is anonymous polls during fac mtg and PD. Allowing voices to be heard is awesome!
1 of our new methods for engaging Ts is anonymous polls during fac mtg and PD. Allowing voices to be heard is awesome!
We need to empower admin & Ts to realize the power of this course.
Admins need to be supporters and encouragers. They need to empower!
All education is sales: teacher to kid, admin/staff developer to teacher. Don't shy away from that.
It also models how such tools could be used with students to increase student voice.
That's a start, but not all polls allow you to hear voices.
While teaching for 15 years, I learned much from supervisors, including many things I would never (& didn't) do as a leader.
Buy-in is crucial. I think of it as an agrarian metaphor of preparing your soil before planting and subsequent harvest.

Intelligence without ambition is a bird without wings. - Salvador Dali
Gotta run but thanks for letting spout off on the need to pay attention to oral communication. See you next time...
The most popular answer or not always the right one, or the one with the greatest affect.
well said. Although i have seen older teachers think of tech as a learning curve for them and turn into frustration.
Thank y for valuing T input. We need more PD like this.
I was lucky enough to be part of the “First Mover” group that launched “To Sell is Human” for
Most Adms think critically, many forget 2 talk from heart. Since most were t's, 1 has 2 believe the heart is still in it.Yes?
When Ts experience PD that values their input, they create classes that value student input.
Admins also need to be doers and lead by example. Walk the walk & not just talk the talk.
“History is not kind to idlers” - National Commission on Excellence in Ed.(1983). Make history. We can help.
Hey, great ideas. Have you written a book about this, Erik or do you have a website?
What are some different ways that they can do that?

The best teaching/learning so often occurs when the teacher sits and engages with Ss with not a book in sight.I know
I hired my staff intentionally. They are brilliant. The best thing I can do is trust & stay out of way.
I really like this.Attended a couple of sessions this weekend that did this
Attend PL w/tchrs, build relationships, know your ppl, support their interests, seek resources, etc.
Took a break from presenting, but ready to try again soon.

Much of my best inspiration has come from --many mentors there.
Sorry I am late, mom and dad had a waterbed leak.
Good night from Ireland. Thanks for another great engagement. We learn so much from eachother.Almost 1 am here
Yes, identity goes way beyond resume.
Relationship, relationship, relationship -- critical for T's and Admin.
Absolutely. Relationships are key — and knowing your ppl is part of relationship building. https://t.co/r8EMqunWgN
First step is to know who your staff is. Not just their resume, their identity.

Great to connect, Kevin. Thanks for joining--loved my trip to Ireland.
So, in my opinion the most important quality an admin has to have is a love for kids. No love = bad admin.
Oh no--that could be the start of a very good book. . . hope all is well.
I was part of the 96 member advance launch team. Very cool experience.
THANK YOU FOR PARTICIPATING IN — I learn so much from you and am grateful for the opportunity jin together here each week.
It's what we need to do as Ts, too. Develop relationships w/ Ss that show we care about them as individuals.
I agree! It's so important to care about the students instead of focusing too much on the job

Oh, that is fantastic! I went to Fall of 2014 & help w/ .
I prefer to have administrators who like to spend time out with students more and stuck in meetings less. I bet they would too.
I understand their job is different, but the purpose of school doesn't change. That needs to stay the focus.
Started in Shannon drove up coast to Galway,Connemarra, Dublin, Waterford, Kinsale, Kilarney, Balleyvourney. ..Wonderful.

It seems to me much of what principals are expected to do should be done by someone else. They need to be focused on students.
Learned a lot in my first twitter chat! Can't wait to apply some ideas in my future classroom!
We can have people that do non educational tasks that suck the time of principals.
Sessions always tricky since there's such diversity of knowledge levels, interest. Why model powerful.
Though I took back some info that I already put into action--very powerful
Starting in 10 min chat on Think piece 2 for Ontario edu

Terrific. I've heard it's a great book. That was a great opportunity and experience for you.
Heard Pink speak a few years ago--very inspiring.
Multi-tasked tonight. Bball game just ended; must go clear the crowd. Hasta mañana, tweeple.
Thx for leading convo on leadership.
I actually felt very valued--many eds spoke, great stories, very teacher centered.

interesting topic in leu of tonights How much hacking in a classroom can administrators do?
Perhaps they heard that and made some changes.
