Welcome to the #makeitreal chat! I'm happy to be moderating tonight on a topic near and dear to my heart: Student Driven Learning: Let Passion Pave the Way! Please introduce yourself with name / location / role and share something you are passionate about!
Hey all. Steve from NJ. Excited to be moderating #makeitreal tonight. I teach game design and development and I’m passionate about games (go figure!) I’m also passionate about my family, building communities, and snorkeling with sea turtles in Hawaii!!!
A1 for me student driven learning involves student choice and providing students with opportunities to find and nurture their passion. Students need to take control of their learning because it’s meaningful to them. #makeitreal
A1: When I think of student-driven learning, I think of honoring student agency. I think of providing students with opportunities to be authors of their own learning. https://t.co/pmUGEDW5dx#makeitreal
A1: When I studied psychology, I was really impressed with Bandura's self-efficacy definition and #SelfDetermination Theory. When Ss get a challenge that gives them a sense of Autonomy, Mastery and Relatedness, they're motivated to do it. #makeitreal

We choose what we want to learn outside of school. Why not bring that approach to school? Learning is beautiful especially when it’s meaningful to the learner. #makeitreal
A2: Provide an environment that cultivates a culture of ownership—a culture where students have choice and voice in what they are putting forethought towards, the intention they are setting, how they execute their intentions, and how they reflect upon their actions. #makeitreal
A2: it’s become increasingly apparent how we all learn what we are motivated to learn in informal spaces. I have begun to bring that approach to learning into the classroom. If we turn to YouTube or tutorials to learn why shouldn’t our students ? #makeitreal
A2 Game-Based Learning! Ss choose how to advance in the game (= lesson). They get feedback, experience points & resources. They have a "shop" where they can use their resources to "buy items". Like @MrKoz31 : "can listen to music during work"/ "get a hint in a test". #makeitreal
Ss choose what they read and how & when to respond in their journals. They are given the criteria/standards & they create their summative assessments. They design their own reading/writing plans. Conferring is based on their discoveries through reflective questioning. #makeitreal
Yes! And maybe how they want to demonstrate the learning. Do you do this as a regular part of your practice? #makeitreal. As a tech director how do you support teachers and students in these ways?
A3: this goes back to true choice in learning paths. I feel that it is our role as educators to help students find their calling. This means a paradigm shift where we can’t focus purely on content. #makeitreal
A1: Ss coming up with the Qs around a topic rather than Ts feeding information. My former colleagues were masters at letting the kids ask the Qs. All the “content” was still covered, but the kids owned it because they asked it. #MakeItReal
Outro: Thanks for joining us tonight for #makeitreal - please reintroduce yourself with name / location / role and share your key takeaways from the chat. Happy Holidays everyone!!
Thanks all. Steve from NJ. I teach game design and have made a career out of following my passion. I believe it shows and allows me to model what’s possible. Greatest takeaway is that students want to own their learning but we must help create the safe space. #makeitreal
A3: We can help students find their passions by providing variety in learning opportunities. We can help them nurture their passions by giving them the reigns—let them try new things, take purposeful risks, get a little messy, and learn from it all. #makeitreal
