Good evening Glad to be back and looking forward to the chat. Michelle, principal and 6th grade ELA and Health teacher.
A1) Use Google Classroom's Ask a Question for quick feedback, love for collab. feedback, any way to make learning visible
Yea! Glad to have you here tonight! Should be a good chat!
This is my fourth week in school!
You are in your stride then! Thanks for being here and sharing your thinking!
Wait - I don't know what Q1 is!
A little late, but I am glad to finally be back in . Happy Tuesday all! I'll be in and out; 1st day tomorrow.
A1 I like simple and quick like exit slips and quick reflective blog posts.
A1: My favorite formative A in ELA is conferring and using the Confer app (still!) I email students our notes.
I know that feeling! We are in week 2!
Is the Confer App able to be used on all platforms? Want to know more about it! https://t.co/xW5nIDkx06
A1: My favorite formative A in ELA is conferring and using the Confer app (still!) I email students our notes.
That's great! Hope it is going wonderful!
Question 2 coming up in one minute! Thanks for the ideas!
A1: Stoplight exit slips. Three levels of math problem given, choose the most difficult two you can do on your own.
I like it when Ss can collaborate on reflective blogs and see each other's thinking
I have it on the iPad, but is supposed to be available on Android. Been around for a bit, but it's a great tracker.
A1: My favorite is definitely . I am addicted to them. Close second is Plickers.
Love that you share math ideas...lots of Ts always looking for these ideas
That is great for a formative assessment. Hm. How can I use something like that in ELA? Thinking.
I haven't hear of it. I will have to check it out.
I have chromebooks in the classroom, which is why I wondered. I will check it out.
A2) Hand out cards or roll die w/a decoding sheet where Ss match their card/die roll w/an assessment question/activity
Jumping in late - Michelle from ATL.
A2: Cards: you could draw a card that correlates to a ? or act. Clubs- Partner Hearts- Solo Spades- Small group Diam- Whole class
Good question! I'd try Bloom's Taxonomy for different questioning levels, maybe?
Innovative! I like this! Jotting down the idea now. https://t.co/EvRi1rX4tU
A2: Cards: you could draw a card that correlates to a ? or act. Clubs- Partner Hearts- Solo Spades- Small group Diam- Whole class
A2 Not too creative tonight. Could use to match and rematch students to share what they know.
Question 3 coming up in one minute!
Don't mean to stump anyone! Just pushing our thinking for innovative ideas! ;)
A2: Cards - with , parts of speech game- card pulled must begin w the letter of the card.T assigns POS -> If 2, word starts "t"
I like that. I could see putting that together. Thanks!
Another great idea! I like the parts of speech idea as I'm always looking for new ways to engage Ss on this
Some of you have shared online tools...are there others you like?
A3) , Google Classroom (ask a question), Exit Tickets, , , Google Docs (shared docs)
A3: Padlet and Kahoot already mentioned. I just started using Nearpod last week and am stunned by it's versatility. Great feedback
POS doesn't have to be drudgery! I have had my Ss make games in the past. Best was a bean bag toss.
I dont know Nearpod. Will have to check it out!
Nearpod: That is one I haven't tried yet...need to do so. What have you seen w/it that you haven't seen w/other apps?
That looks like a pretty good list. https://t.co/m0f1RbrCdW
A3) , Google Classroom (ask a question), Exit Tickets, , , Google Docs (shared docs)
I agree! I'm committed to gamification in my class and side missions/quests...all of this engages Ss
Hello Tracy from MA popping in for a bit.
A3: My fave is , but I also use all kinds of online games for grammar assessments. Also have a SmartBoard bullseye game.
Nearpod--you make a lesson with slides. You can control it or student paced. Last week...
Hi Tracy! Glad to see you here! Jump in anyplace!
I gave students a sentence to practice revising. As they revise, I see their answers but they don't. I see who is engaged.
A3: Only plickers has not been mentioned yet. You guys named them all :)
Wonderful! ....I have heard MANY teachers love Nearpod. Just need to make time for it.
Question 4 coming up in one minute!
Plickers provides student activity w/out the tech in their hands which is a nice mix up.
A3 It's already been mentioned still a fave w/ my Ss & Google Forms: easy to customize.Started using a bit
Agree! Saw so many ideas that can be twisted, turned and used in a variety of ways for a variety of content areas!
I like the real-time to it and the way it is immediate feedback to the Ss.
Just read about using rubrics to grade process not final product. Worth exploring
A4: Formative assessment, I sit with group and confer--how is it going, what do you need from each other and me to accomplish work?
Michelle! Enjoying this one too...making me think....will use it!
The National Writing Project is all about process, not product. See what "is" there, work on other areas https://t.co/eaNc2cjcbK
Just read about using rubrics to grade process not final product. Worth exploring
Question 5 coming up in one minute!
Sometimes the quiet Ss won't say what they are thinking...how do you handle this part of group conferring?
Love this. Gets away from blame-placing, focuses on grp dynamics.
Usually they will catch me later if they have BIG concerns. But I try to make it a positive thing--they share.
Have you tried a back-channel? Sometimes works well for more introverted personality types.
A5) Use Legos or Play Doh to represent something they learned, a concept, or compare/contrast concepts.
A5 Using legos to build a scene explaining concept or vocabulary word.
All about the relationships, no matter what, isn't it! So true! Nice.
Not recently! Thanks for reminder!
A5 I use old calendar pictures cut up into puzzle pieces to group Ss for turn & talks, grp work, partner shares
Yes, I have. I agree, this can help. I like it...Google Classroom can do something similar, too.
Had Ss to work on sharing, speaking & listening on first day of school. They drew cards w/ building prompts
Small but creative group tonight! I know so many Ts are just getting back to school today or this week!

A6) Ask Ss to contribute questions & create a ; then play as a class
What a great idea for recyling, upcycling! Perfect!
A6 Students can make their own kahoot quizes.
A6: Have the students contribute to a shared doc for a study guide.
Thanks Anne! Sorry Tweetdeck is slow! Your thinking helped to push my thinking! I appreciate your time!
Love this! Did this last yr and had Ss peer review. Great lesson in what makes a good - and fair - question.
We are thinking alike here!
What a gr8 idea for grouping! Give Ss a puzzle piece & find the rest of the pic. TY! Will use for sure.
I like this idea. Have not done it before.
Question 7 coming up in one minute
A6- non-tech student write questions with answers about the concept. They can make them into I Have, Who Has cards.
An oldie but goodie! Also can be used as a hook for beginning a new unit/topic.
A7 Get them moving around the room if they agree or disagree, true, false, etc.
A6: , Create a quiz on google forms, and create questions for question forum.
Aye, aye, matey! Brilliant! Already trying to think of how to implement soon.
I also like to do a "Would you rather" game....any kind of movement makes them happy!
A7- Scoot- each student has question to answer, they have 30 or so seconds to answer, they will get up and scoot to next question
Yes, my students love acting it out or making a video.
Haven't done this! I bet they love it!
Yes! And you can Scoot to anything. So easy!
Question 8 coming up in one minute!
A7: We recently invested in HUGE success.
Quiz-Quiz-Trade Ss ask and answer Qs, trade cards and move on to new partner. Great for review too
A8) Going to try Scoot, puzzle pieces, conferring w/groups on group activity, cards w/POS and maybe Nearpod! So many great ideas.
We affectionately call this "speed dating". I like your title better! https://t.co/YDiCOJpTAK
A7- Scoot- each student has question to answer, they have 30 or so seconds to answer, they will get up and scoot to next question
A8: Puzzle pieces, NESW group assess and more!
A8 I think my students would love the Scoot game. Thanks for sharing that idea.
I missed it, I really needed this, having a difficult year...grrr flying to Colorado tomorrow so much to do.
sorry
A8 Just one! So many take aways. Going to check out symbaloo, Socrative, and further experiment w/ Go formative
A8- loved all the ideas! I like the puzzle piece, that is one I haven't tried.
How often can you use it?
Lots of great ideas! Thank you so much for putting your time aside to spend with us! We are better together!
Socrative grades it for you! Easy to use and bonus with the grading!
A8: I want to try quiz-quiz-trade, SCOOT, Legos, and the card idea.
I agree! https://t.co/J7C2RmxizO

I guess I don't totally understand it. Was thinking it was collaborative game..
Thanks for the great chat everyone! I think I gained more than I shared. Have a fantastic rest of the week.
Here is the puzzle piece idea. https://t.co/qc7xZRY8IM
A5 I use old calendar pictures cut up into puzzle pieces to group Ss for turn & talks, grp work, partner shares
Not so much time, I have 16 boys and 5 girls. Just a VERy different make up.
See you all next week! Expect more folks as we hit our groove! Let me know if you have topic requests!
Thank you for a great chat as always. Next week, I hope to be more on the ball.
