This wk's was beginning to engage a hard-to-engage S today w/a personalized lrning experience!
What have been some successes? Some challenges?
Oh my gosh-- LOVE ClassFlow. That's so great!
rewarding was setting goals based on student achievement, most challenging was how to we gather the data
FYI: The voxer group will be reading/discussing the book Coaching Conversations. Let us know if you want to join.
Welcome. I'm in Iowa too - always great to see fellow Iowans here!
My for this week was being able to get two other Ts to team up with me to hold PD sessions for Ts today!
Q1: How would you define “feedback”?
I love it too - and continue to learn more and more! Would love to hear you you are using it.
Also, as an experienced T of color,
feedback = JenWilliams publicly working w/a well-known🕌Educator
My 4… https://t.co/JLQaCmwwri
Brian in Buffalo, NY Literacy Coach. is witnessing the amazing work with the launch of reading workshop. Amazing Ts &Ss!
Sounds amazing! What was the topic of the PD?
That Twitter Olympic Moment was 2 weeks ago, and a result of feedback from a Nat'l Conference over the Summer.
A1: Specific info and data given to T for the purpose of reflection and growth
A1) Responsive. Critiquing yet complimentary. Catch them doing something right.
be interested in this chat. Happening now.
We’d love you to join Tonight’s topic: Giving Effective Feedback to Promote Reflection
A1: Feedback = sharing what was observed, sharing questions raised, brainstorming solutions together
Information that is collect with the purpose of informing change.
A1: feedback. I like the terminology in the Wigegins article: tangible + transparent. No other agendas.
A1: “Feedback is information about how we are doing in our efforts to reach a goal.” Grant Wiggins
A1 Lots of types, but try to stay descriptive. What do we see?
A1: feedback is a reciprocal reflective conversation centered around student based learning and instructional practice
A1 Information collected with the intent to drive change
The focus was the use of . Ts selected from 1/3 sessions to attend based on their needs!
Q2: What does it mean to be a reflective professional for you?
How does a school create a learning community supportive of this level of reflective practice? Amazing! https://t.co/h5iEyoIYSe
A1: Sometimes feedback isn't valid-haphazard comments or surveys completed quickly. When needed, I desire thoughtful feedback
Feel I have lots to learn in the area of coaching feedback so happy to listen & lrn tonight!
A2: For me, it's asking each moment of the day, how could that have been better?
A1: Noticing what I can of my impact; being open to learning & changing, stretching myself, being curious about ways to improve
A2: Honestly, constantly processing events as the happen, connecting with my core values and considering next steps for myself.
A2: Noticing what I can of my impact; being open to learning & changing, stretching myself, being curious about ways to improve
A2: being open to change and asking what is the biggest lesson I learned today
A2 I see both an individual and team component. They should compliment each other.
It is pretty amazing, isn't it.
Q3: What are ways feedback has been given to you that has helped you reflect?
A2 Being a reflective educator allows me to take risks, learn, grow, serve and empower others and make in impact.
A2: Being reflective professional means analyzing each of my choices & asking myself what worked & what I can improve
Thanks for the Feedback: Excellent read! Changes the way you think about and receive feedback. https://t.co/uhXHCUcEF7
Looks like an excellent read. Thanks for sharing!
A2: Reflection is critical: time each day to think about conversations, interactions and decisions and how they impact students
changed my approach to giving and receiving feedback.
A3: 1/2 As coach & adjunct, I receive: survey/eval results, exit tickets, conversations one-one, lots of forms of feedback.
A2 Reflection to me is analyzing. Staying out of judgement and positive self talk. Connecting and driving to a target.
Perhaps a way to start is to model the way. How could others observe you?
I am jumping in late, but excited to join tonight! I'm a elementary school instructional coach from Metro Atlanta.
That’s huge praise! OK - I’m buying it and reading it! Thanks!
A3: My Ss aced standardized tests. I now do a PD on incorporating testing strategies into classRM curriculum.
A3: For teaching, video! As a C, reflection forms and conversations.
A3 2/2 But as a coach/instructor, I WISH I had a coach or tchg partner of my own to help me move toward specific goals.
A3: I use an exit survey @ the end of coaching cycles for feedback. Also just reflective convos w/ teachers & admin
A3 Honest, descriptive feedback defies spin - it forces me to not only acknowledge my shortcomings, but build on my strengths
A3: Collaborating with colleagues & being open to my perspectives changing as I listen & better understand theirs
A3: Reflective questions embedded in my feedback help me take a moment a reflect upon the day & look from a different perspective
Welcome. Glad you could join us this evening.
Maybe it’s not so much shortcomings & strengths; but how we are impactful in reaching goals & how we are not
A3: Also bored Ss who were once disengaged became
front+center 😇
once Classwork + Instruction became gamified🎮.
Q4: What advice do you have to offer about giving feedback to promote reflection?
A3: When the feedback is evaluative it creates some tense moments. When it's 'coaching' feedback, I respond much better
Ditto! I reach out now & ask others 2coach me in specific areas. Had colleague observeme today &provide feedback
YES! Every day Ts are observing me. I use Look For's, lab guides, & more daily. Now to spread that somehow!
Ooh! One of my fave feedback sessions:T explaining how language dictated Ss responses + to be SPECIFIC.
A3: What he said. https://t.co/KBEDFL041Z
A3 Honest, descriptive feedback defies spin - it forces me to not only acknowledge my shortcomings, but build on my strengths
Why didn't I think of that?! https://t.co/DWzrjfxdZi
Ditto! I reach out now & ask others 2coach me in specific areas. Had colleague observeme today &provide feedback
A4 Receive feedback and reflect. Publicly, at times.
Do you have any type of form to collect feedback? Check the hashtag. I know ideas are being shared.
A4: Focus on the reflection, more than the feedback - help set goals, wonder about ways to reach them, be curious&nonjudgemental
What would be some good resources for developing Look For's
This is why I love coaching coaches! https://t.co/bng2XcHHFd
Ditto! I reach out now & ask others 2coach me in specific areas. Had colleague observeme today &provide feedback
Onus of responsibility then fell on my own shoulders + taught me to be more self reflective.
A4: Be as objective as possible. Focus on what S are doing.
- Pup is coaching me. Time to go out. BRB.
Yes, I have many, and use them daily (Ts observing me), but I'm excited to explore !
Q5: What is challenging to you about giving feedback to promote reflection?
Great idea! I don't have home base (support 9 sites) so trying to decide how to best do this. Ideas?
A5: Being specific enough and asking the right ?s.
Decide on/create them in study groups or teams, Ts observe you first, then use the same form when you observe them.
A5: It's hard to find time to sit down & give effective feedback. Notes /Emails can be misconstrued. The convo & Qs are a must.
A5: I sometimes struggle to not try and solve problems for others, but rather guide them to solve problems
Nicely said, Ken. Yes; & our “truth” is subjective; hard to remain nonjudgemental
Yes and I find face to face works best in the Ts environment
Jumping into late... I'm Jennifer, a math coach in Oregon.
That’s been a big one for me as well; holding back on “advice” & helping to promote reflection
Finding time to debrief is my biggest challenge right now.
A4: First work to establish relationships w Ts, be mindful of what you are observing, Look for positives & ask lots of questions
Welcome. Glad you could join us.
Hi Jennifer; so glad you could make it to tonight
I am a rdg & wtg wkshp person, so the RUOS and WUOS and the work of TCRWP are where I always start. Also, Hattie.
Q6: What are some qualities of people successful in giving feedback?
I completely agree; Face to face is critical to ensure clear communication
I find, starting with "I noticed..." and then "what do you think about that?" can help
A5: Feedback that helps inform + improve w/out decreasing confidence or any residue of negativity.
I try and use truth without quotation marks. Doesn't always work.
Yes, in a coaching cycle it is established & set up ahead of time, but in general walkthroughs it is difficult.
A6: It's truly about strong professional relationships and trust. You have to know what you are talking about.
My favorite prompts. I noticed. I wonder. What if? How might?
I'm so excited - I get to see John Hattie in October!
A5: Feedback can be ineffective if too vague to help shape action/reaction or too concrete to not feel 'generalizable'; balance.
A6: Fantastic listener and reflective questioner. Great rapport with Ts.
A5: Knowing the "right" question to ask at the "right" moment is a struggle. We can build someone up or tear them down w our words
When I start a coaching cycle, we schedule all dates ahead of time to make sure the reflection piece is not missed
I'm trying after I model in my buildings.
Interesting; more &more I think of truth in quotation marks. Will try it your way for the next few days&see how it goes
I'm struggling to find support Nationally from Ts as a victim of PoliceBrutality. It's shocking that Ts pretend it didn't happen.
A5 Keeping a single focus for Ts to reflect on can be challenging when my eyes see more than one area to consider
Gather the data for teachers and allowing them to review often guides them to their own feedback.
A6: patience, reflective questions and staying focused on the goals
I am jealous! Please share any insights you gain.
Helping teachers to choose the focus can be a challenge for me
A6 Curious. Observant. Clear.
I can't play my🎻+ I was at a stage where I was creating+ writing my own music. So much lost due to PoliceBrutality.
And that is my mistake. I'm trying to do too much, too fast, without explicitly scheduling reflection time.
I will. I'm sure I'll tweet from the session. I really can't believe he is going to be in Iowa!
I'm applying there for work opportunities.
A6 Asking more Qs that lead to meaningful dialogue
A6: Curious, reflective, open, patient, nonjudgemental, caring, supportive, humble
I put my questions on the form where they record student ideas and the questions I ask.
A6: Listening with the intent to understand instead of listening to respond.
Q7: What are some qualities of people successful in receiving feedback?
Nice! I tried "I noticed/wonder..." other day & seemed 2work well. These are great, ladies, TY!
Nice! I tried "I noticed/wonder" other day & seemed to work well. These are great, ladies, TY!
A6: Capacity to navigate nuance; clarity about effective collaboration; efficacy/vulnerability; prompting to stretch thinking
A7: They are not defensive. They are eager and self-questioning and reflection. They crave feedback.
Smart! Doing this next time!
It's even more shocking to be here in CA knowing a multimillion dollar company partially responsible is revered instead of jailed.
A pleasure! An for me this week was hearing my students say “I noticed” about their learning
. Were there quotation marks around the T-word when that famous question, "What is truth?," was asked?
Like wrongful imprisonment + false allegations are an appropriate method to "compete" when one isn't as well educated.
A6 They possess exceptional interpersonal skill. Delivery Is timely , specific and strengths based https://t.co/9JvM5I0CL4
Q8: Are the ways of becoming more reflective as a professional?
I think we all have our own truths/our own narratives - hearing somebody else’s is a challenge
A7 I do best when I care deeply about the learning goal. Otherwise, it's just noise.
A8 That is the million dollar question!
Hear that! Well, sometimes I do.
A6:
1⃣Pick 2-3 things/specific
2⃣Improvements immediate
(as opposed to simply criticizing)
A8: Deliberately seeking and inviting feedback.
A7: many now may say something like "growth mindset"
A7: To receive successfully receive feedback, people usually have a growth mindset, are fearless, and open to learn
Love thinking about a situation from multiple perspectives/multiple truths - stretches my thinking
I'll mark my calendar! Thanks for letting us know!
A8: My goal for this year is to spend more time reflecting & journaling. I got a passion planner to help me with that.
Caring deeply is where it's at. Turn down the noise; crank up the care!
A7: They have a and feel there's always room to grow.
A8 My goal to be more reflective is to blog more.
A8 Most of the Ts and As I know are deeply reflective. Just not always at the same time in the same ways. Just like our Ss.
A8: Practice the 'practice' of reflection
A8 Guided practice looking at S work, observing Ss, sensitivity to diverse issues & perspecitives, grows reflective practice.
A8: Embrace the possibilities in ourselves that we have not yet recognized
So true. And makes this work so scary! And yet, so important.
Thx for a great chat! Off early for dinner, but lrned LOTS in a short amt of time :)
A8: Seeek opportunities to reflect; seek to find the positive and not dwell on negative
Yes; we may perceive ourselves as “nonjudgemental” yet ask questions that are felt as attacks
A8 To remember that experience alone is not enough. How we reflect and adapt is what makes us seasoned. https://t.co/WSgVWVhm5j
You contributed much as well; thanks for stretching my thinking!
Thanks for a great chat! Off to do some work!
A8: My goal is to be more purposeful in my reflection through journaling. In my classroom, Ss kept a dream journal. My turn
A8: "feedback" & "feedforward"
The trad'l model is Ts become adjunct faculty to show Mastery.
I chose to develop my Artistic Skills + Writing/Journalism instead.
Me too! I also love learning&creating w/people not afraid to question one another; seeking to help each other grow
Love the idea of a Dream Journal. I use a bullet journal, dreams, visions, plans are all part of it.
Q9: How might you nurture a culture of reflection?
I love having my thinking probed. I am at my best when I collaborate and have my reasoning questioned https://t.co/dlNoaXFTVU
Me too! I also love learning&creating w/people not afraid to question one another; seeking to help each other grow
Time for my planning meeting for 2017 in Portland. Thanks ! I will schedule more reflection times!
I love what shares + embodies the trad'l growth model in careers for Ts. But it's not who I am. 😬🍎🎻📚🎨🎭🎧📺📷📲⏰👗📕✒️📝📂
. Think of those who are deeply afraid to question themselves & each other. How to get them to put down their arms?
Me too!Love seeking together to be more than we were alone, rather than seeking to “convince” one another
Q10: What are some take-aways you have from this evening’s chat?
I honestly don’t know how to help those deeply afraid to ?;feeling blessed to work w/folks who delight in ing ourselves
I’ve enjoyed it as well. You do stretch my thinking; help me reflect:)
A9 Also promote a culture of action People get burned out when reflecting becomes a rabbit hole. Do something reflect and rebuild
Maybe we all need both - collaboration&solitude; just in different measures
A9: Attend UCSB's TeacherEd program. It really helped Ts reflect + train our minds to grow independently.
A9. In Tx we are implementing Japanese Lesson Study. It fosters collaboration and reflection as we build, refine and reflect
Yes - at different times; good not to fear embracing different parts of ourselves
Earned! This is my favorite article on feedback - changed the way I view feedback
Thoughtful & apt. https://t.co/gvPW8S01La
Maybe we all need both - collaboration&solitude; just in different measures
A10: I added a couple more books to my reading list and a renewed purpose to set aside time for reflective journaling
Awesome! Please keep us posted on how the lesson study goes.
Let us know if you'd like to join voxer group. Will start to discuss Coaching Conversaions https://t.co/V8qFiRMw43 soon.
A10: Asking ourselves, "Is it possible for ICs to help Ts become reflective practitioners if we are not reflective ourselves?"
A10 The phrase "culture of reflection"
Q11: What are future topics you would like to chat about with
sure will and you can follow at if you like :)
Thanks for helping me reflect! Special thx to my commiserator will be back next week
