Sorry have to miss the chat tonight, but this podcast is perfect listening with MLK day tomorrow. Give it a listen. You'll be glad you did #oklaed. Putting out here again when some friends actually on the Twitter. :)
Dare you not to sob during this teen's story. Then I challenge you to get to work against segregation in schools #oklaed. We are losing this civil rights battle in education too often. Easier to focus on "accountability" than keep the promise of equity. https://t.co/887OMptIxS
A1: Best way to connect is going to events. I used to do it regularly, but schedules collided, now I connect at lunch time. Great time, real talk. #oklaed
A1 - Face to face with a conversation. Relationships will NEVER get old, they’ll never go out of style, that’s how you connect with kids! #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A1: my favorite way to connect with students is to get on their level and actually get to know them while showing them pieces of myself too. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A1 - As an English teacher, I love having kids write their stories. Often, they are very honest with what they have been through - it helps me connect with them deeper. Also, I love the be involved in their activities outside of my classroom #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A1 - I teach high school so this might be either easier or harder to accomplish depending on your perspective. The best ways for me have been just talking to them, in class, in the hall, on social media. Just engaging them directly. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A1: easy. Through F2F conversation. I find when I share out my experiences they feel comfortable to share theirs and we bond. Classroom meeting time is my favorite time. #oklaed get to know your students by listening and sharing.
A1) The best way to connect with kids is to GET OUT OF THE OFFICE and join them where they are....halls, classes, lunch room, recess, extra curricular activities!! #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A1 I love our Morning Meetings @responsiveclass Our conversations are always lively and never boring. I learn so much about my kids, and they learn about me.#oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A1 Face to face! I really enjoy the conversations we have in the cafeteria every day. I have a group of 4th graders this year that ask me for a riddle. EVERY SINGLE DAY! #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A1 I love getting to know them in informal settings. During lunch hour, in the hall, before/after school. I try to find activities that we could do. Get students to teach me their passions. I want to learn their story, take the time, become a family. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
Know their names, Use their names, Ask them what they think, listen to them, show interest in their lives, celebrate with them, laugh with them, cry with them... #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A1 I like to connect personally. I want them to know I'm a real person who was once a little girl. Some are amazed that I don't live at school. #oklaed
A1 I love connecting with students through one on one feedback and through their writing. Even the quietest, most reserved students can communicate this way. #oklaed
I had a group from my previous semester classes and half the room when I entered went: "Mr. Read!, we miss you!" My science teacher went: "you're popular." #oklaed
A1: Be visible! Lunch, recess, hallways, events, etc. Every morning at drop off and every afternoon at pick up! Smile, give a compliment, ask them questions, learn about their interests, likes, dislikes, fears, etc. #oklaed
A1: This year I connected with students at Lead Like Me student leadership training. Loved connecting in person helping to grow student leaders #kidsdeserveit#OAESP1#oklaed#ccosa
#oklaed#KidsDeserveIt A1: I like to find out their career choices, interests, and talents because that's what I use to design the curriculum for my classes. Building connections and giving them choices are two ideas I use.
A1) My favorite way to connect with students use to be coaching, but now I enjoy the conversations I have with students daily. I look for ways to be involved in their activities and I support them as much as possible. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A1: I like attendance questions. It gets everyone to speak in front of the class while sharing something specific to them, but not so personal it makes them too vulnerable. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A1) My fav way to connect w/ Ss is through extracurricular stuff. We get to know each other in a more relaxed environment, we see each other a real people! #KidsDeserveIt#oklaed
My favorite way is to connect through storytelling—especially personal or family ones. When they know we are people first, they seem to be more open to learning #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A1. My favorite way to connect with them is face to face conversation. Ss have such great stories to share. You learn so much about them. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A1: #oklaed Talking with students, particularly about things they are passionate about, has given me connections that are more meaningful than surface level.
A1: I like to be WITH the kids! Lunch, recess, riding (or driving) the bus, reading, coding....relationships start when we intentionally interact! #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A1 a few minutes of talking about things not related to school. How was their wknd? Did they watch their fav team play? Find a connection and build a relationship. #oklaed
A1 I love going outside during recess time. Talking about their “outside life”, not just their “school life”....getting to really know them. I also have mints in my office so I often have “mint chats” with kids. #oklaed
A1 I love to connect with kids on the "human" level. Havimg conversations out of that school context. It's amazing what difference that can make! #kidsdeserveit#oklaed
A1: daily conversations about things that are important to THEM, hugs, making eye 👁 contact when they are talking, making sure I’m not multitasking when they want to chat with me #KidsDeserveIt#oklaed#pdbearchat
A1: I have always connected well with Ss and miss the classroom everyday. Many of my former Ss are some of our family’s closest friends and now part of the family #oklaed
A1b: I enjoy attending extra curricular events & supporting my Ss outside of school! It forms great connections with student families! #KidsDeserveIt#oklaed
A1b: I enjoy attending extra curricular events & supporting my Ss outside of school! It forms great connections with student families! #KidsDeserveIt#oklaed
A1 During extracurriculur activities. I love to coach sports or take on various activities. A great context to get to know students differently. It also shows that you are invested in their lives and they appreciate it. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A1: I miss having the opportunity to connect with Ss, I greeted them early, ate with them, talked at recess, shared favorite books, attend their events etc. #oklaed
A1: connecting with those kids who need that daily check in is key...changes the script for them and starts them off on a good note as well as gives us a chance to see if they are arriving in a way that needs support first thing... #kidsdeserveit#oklaed
A2 I am usually pretty willing to dive in head first in my classroom. That said, if something holds me back, it's usually my natural inclination to follow "rules." Or fear of failure. #oklaed
A2 It used to be comments or weird looks from colleagues. Now it doesn't matter. Sometimes there is a little self-doubt (can I pull it off). Mostly, with my PLN nowadays, there is nothing that stands in my way. Do what it takes...for kids. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A2: I’m new to my school this year so I admit I have been reluctant to bring up too much new stuff Bc they seem to already have a rhythm. That’s on me. My own issue. Just need to get into my groove. #oklaed
A2: It's a rarity, but if something happens at home, then that keeps be delayed. I've been up sometimes until 2 am to get something new to work. #oklaed
A2 - My 1st thought is lack of being a 1:1 school or even class. I know I could do so many more innovative things if every student had a chromebook in their hand. Yet as @KathySDunn has reminded me - sometimes it is necessary to innovate inside the box too #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A2: Mostly time... I have lots of ideas, but haven't figured out how to fit them in. So I try something new at least once a semester, based on the students I have at the time. #oklaed
#oklaed A2: I always try something new, but not having the resources may hold me back from my task. Resources include books that go along with the career choices, interests, and talents of my students. #KidsDeserveIt
A2. My Queen's answer: Approval. Would your admin/team be on board with something outside of the norm/ blind trust vs. seeing it in action first.
#oklaed
A2: Time and Resources! I feel that there is not enough time to implement new ideas and execute them, nor are there enough funding to get the things I need to prepare my students for life. #oklaed
A2 -It used to be fear of failure or not looking "with it", but I've learned it is okay to try something new &innovative &if it doesn't work, I just own it with my Ss...plus you get the bonus of them seeing a real life example of learning through failure #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A2: We try to say "yes" to anything that brings novelty and https://t.co/CuNP8xhWlH ideas. I'll often challenge teachers to surprise me...surprise themselves...and they often do!#oklaed
A2: I worry that I’ll invest too much time in explaining a new way of doing things, it won’t work, and I’ve lost all of that valuable time. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A2: Initially it is fear of failure that holds me back. I’ve found when I surround myself with supportive people who are willing to take risks with me, I can DROPKICK My DOUBT!! Have fun and go for it! Model risk taking! #oklaed#JoinTogetherJanuary#ssdpride#warriorscreate
A2: worrying I’ll take too much time to “figure it out” and end up wasting too much time and end up having kids not be successful on standardized tests. #oklaed
A2 Fear of failure is often what keeps me from risk taking but S’s need us to first-risk-takers if we want them to be courageous learners #OklaEd#kidsdeserveit
A2. Unfortunately, we let the craziness of school life get in the way of trying new things kids need. That just sounds wrong! Schools are for KIDS! #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A2) TIME! If I feel like I don’t have time to do it right, I’m not going to do it! Juggling 3 preps & 3 extras is time consuming! #kidsdeserveit#oklaed
A2: Sometimes its the fear of failure. It’s great when you can share with a few colleagues and find others who want to move forward and take a chance. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A2: seriously- nothing! I’m blessed to have administration that lets me go wild 😜! So far they’ve embraced my quirky way of teaching, bless their hearts! #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt#pdbearchat
A2 What holds me back is when there are too many things happening at one time. Prioritizing is important even if it means waiting to start something new. #oklaed
A2 I’m lucky to have a job now that lets me be out of the box without apologies. But many feel it’s hard to follow your ❤️ when you are micromanaged #oklaed
A2: Nothing really holds me back! I’ve hit a point where I’m not afraid to try new things if it’s for my Ss! Safe & boring are in the past! Never going back! #KidsDeserveIt#oklaed
Great tip! Prioritize. We have to find a balance and not just jump on every "new" idea and strategy....that's a quick way to fail. I know first hand! #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A2 What holds me back is when there are too many things happening at one time. Prioritizing is important even if it means waiting to start something new. #oklaed
A2 continued: I feel as if everything I do has to be quantifiable in order for it to matter. Metrics, Metrics, and Metrics...But not everything that can be counted counts! #oklaed
A2: @MsShelton5th one of the best things educational leaders can do is create a culture where teachers feel safe in taking risks by trying new ideas w Ss. We have to create for them what we want them to do for Ss. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
Joy, we will call your office tomorrow with details for OAESP Midwinter Conference on Wed. Jan. 31 at the Reed Center. It would be great if you can drop by #KidsDeserveIt#OAESP1#oklaed#ccosa
I am willing to try anything. Sometimes this might not be such a good idea. I just need to be more intentional and purposeful with my outside the box thinking sometimes to reassess its purpose. #oklaed
A2 Luckily I love trying new things. I also have the support to try new things. My biggest struggle is getting the new things out of my classroom and into others. #oklaed
A3 - Stop it at the gate and don’t let it in! The work you’re doing is meaningful and worthwhile, surround yourself with others that feel the same! So many in my PLN crew, thx for always being there! #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A2. My Queen's answer: Approval. Would your admin/team be on board with something outside of the norm/ blind trust vs. seeing it in action first.
#oklaed
A3: I fight that feeling by surrounding myself with my marigold teachers. These are key! You gotta have people around you that can hold you down and bring you up! #oklaed
A2 Nothing at all. I am encouraged to innovate and think outside the box. I have always been fairly fearless when it comes to trying new things. #oklaed
Remember #oklaed we must be on the offense. Defense holds us back, makes it easy to make excuses, always reacting. Go on the offense for kids and push the envelope every single day! #KidsDeserveIt
35 minutes for a class is not enough time. Adjusting the schedule needs to be looked at. I know you don’t have that control, but it needs to be. #oklaed
A3 #oklaed supports me. I also talk to Ts in my building, and try to read as much about the topic in which I'm experiencing doubt. I've also started interviewing people for my #reThinkELA podcast about topics I want to know more about (and know others need, as well).

That is so true. We have to try if we believe it will help students but we have to make sure it worked and to keep it up if it continues to work. Don’t chase every shiny object #oklaed
Remember #oklaed we must be on the offense. Defense holds us back, makes it easy to make excuses, always reacting. Go on the offense for kids and push the envelope every single day! #KidsDeserveIt
A3: I am the support for my staff to step out of their comfort zone and try new things. I have an amazing superintendent that supports our ideas and initiatives #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A3- I surround myself with people who build me and each other up! I also have a very supportive admin team who push me to be better. @3littlebirds2@heatherallen80#oklaed
A3: Remember the old slogan, "Never let see you sweat"? I use to believe it...fake til you make it. I've learned transparency,risk- taking and vulnerability helps build trust....reducing the impact of doubt.#oklaed
A3 - I try to remember why I made the career change to education. My wife, the amazing @TheMrsGragg, is always there, as are my 3 children, my parents $ other family. Many times, though, a S encounter will change my perspective when getting to in my feels. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A3...The feelings of doubt are with me from February until after testing. It’s scary getting testing results, but so far my administration supports me.#oklaed
A3: I block out my own thoughts of doubt by looking at how it will benefit the students as well as helping communicate to parents what is going on in my classroom. #oklaed
Angela Clark Little | co-founder of @okpe4pe | @EdmondSchools Mom | Business Analyst | New puppy & Senior Weim owner so my life is straight chaos right now. Like I needed one more thing to do. 😳 😍#oklaed
A3 I shares ideas with the people I trust. This includes people in the building and out of the building. They will be honest with me and tell me that yes I’m on the right track or that I need to slow down or rethink an idea. #oklaed
A3) I have an instructional leader and colleagues whom I feel supports me in my role. I also work to gain and keep the support of students, staff, and parents. My family at home are always here to support me, especially when I feel down. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A3 - I have the most amazing teacher tribe who encourages me daily, an administration who trusts me, and Ss who empower me through the relationships we build. Plus, the best husband in the world - so it makes it kind of easy to get rid of doubt. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A3 It helps to share doubts or challenges with others. We always find better solutions in shared learning. So thankful for #PLN friends #OklaEd#kidsdeserveit
Q2. Good question. Initially I didn’t think I was scared of anything, I feel like I do take a lot of risks as an educator. But I feel like my biggest fear of trying sometime is parent response&in this case its not bad! I’m lucky to have have support from admin #KidsDeserveIt
A3: I feel blessed to be in a district where I have always felt support. Not just from the Admin building, but at the building level as well. I'm fortunate to work with great assistants, counselors, teachers, and support personnel! #oklaed
A3. I'm so blessed to work with amazing colleagues and leaders! I'm surrounded by people who believe in me. No wonder I ❤ my work! #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A3 I have always been willing to try new things. If it doesn't work, correct it or try something else. Kind of like food, I will try anything twice because the first person that cooked it may have messed it up. #oklaed
A3. Wifey Answers: My husband, @andredaughty , is my #1 supporter and think, "What would Andre say? Do? or I'll call him and run some things by him first."
*I promise I asked her and this is what she said.*
#sheTHINKSiAMawesome#MYwomanISfresh!
#oklaed
A3: Whenever I take part in @OklaEd discussions, my doubts go away, for I find myself surrounded by "marigolds." The people who support me are the "marigolds": they give me energy and hope from their positive auras. Special shoutout to Dr. Lara Searcy! #oklaed
A3. My colleagues, I have been blessed to work with the same ELA and US His. Ter for close to 20 years. I like to think we are the true definition of team. #oklaed
A3 I always look for the kindness in people Authenticity and honesty. They are such important qualities and remind me constantly to not doubt my instinct. Sometimes you have to shake it off, refocus and keep going. I know I can do it. A change in mindset. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
I have great teaching friends in my building who encourage me in person, a growing online support group and I always know @kasnelson has my back!!!#oklaed
A4: I continue to ask "why" and work to make sure my belief still matches by behaviors. This self check keeps me from becoming something that goes against my belief. #workinprogress#oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A3: Self doubt is something I struggle with. I’m my worst critic & don’t give myself enough credit! I’m thankful I’ve got amazing family & friends who help me keep things in perspective! So thankful for @GuysBride & @lauriesmcintosh! #KidsDeserveIt#oklaed
A3: sometimes we don’t have a squad, so it’s okay to have only one person that you depend on. To tell you when you’re amazing or when you’re being ridiculous. #oklaed
#oklaed A3: The feeling of doubt has been lurking inside me over the last few years. I have taught for 27 years and see that education needs to go down a different path. It just takes too much time to change education. My former S and colleague, @DewinterAmber , has helped me.
A3: My God is powerful. I have been depressed and lost, but he proved to me again that he made me to be an #oklaed educator and soldier for our #oklaed Ss
So sorry I’m late!! Angela Clark Little | co-founder of @okpe4pe | @EdmondSchools Mom | Business Analyst | New puppy & Senior Weim owner so my life is straight chaos right now. Like I needed one more thing to do. 😳 😍#oklaed
I'm going outside my box on this one @MrGragg , but sometimes I think students need us to jump outside the box even if we get a little bit away from the presumed "main" thing. They need recharged, and I can't always make it deep & meaningful when I need an energy surge. #oklaed
I am willing to try anything. Sometimes this might not be such a good idea. I just need to be more intentional and purposeful with my outside the box thinking sometimes to reassess its purpose. #oklaed
A3 Sometimes I get discouraged. That's when I regroup and try something different. That's what I love about my job. No two days are ever the same. #oklaed
A3. I run it by my #SHARKtank squad. They are a group of amazing inner circle folks who will tell me the truth, provide feedback, whether I like it or not. Everyone should have that type of squad in their lives. #TRUTH#oklaed
A3: I have an awesome husband and family that support me. I pray a lot to fight doubt. I battle more with rejection than doubt. I also have the best math PLC group in the world. #oklaed
A3: If I have any doubts I always can count on a great group of educators and leaders that I’ve connected with through Twitter. Also I have a great administrative team at my school and awesome mentors like @principalkp@Russ_Schwartz@BHEPrincipal1 to keep me motivated.#oklaed
A1-I like connecting with my kids from the moment they arrive. I greet them with their choice of a high five, fist bump, wave or hug. You learn a lot in the first few minutes of seeing th. #KidsDeserveIt#oklaed
A3 cont. And #oklaed, the best part of the #SHARKs? They live all over the nation. Technology affords those conversations and feedback without physical meetings and we're all better people because of it! #realtalk
A3: I’m fortunate to have a great group of T’s that are very willing to go out of their comfort zone. They came up with new ideas and I try to support and encourage and they do the same for me when I take a leap. #KidsDeserveIt#oklaed
A3: I bounce some ideas off of my students, you don’t have to worry- they are brutally honest! It’s fun to see through their eyes! I also chat w/team. Also remind myself what I see on social media shouldn’t make me question my own ability..... #oklaed#pdbearchat#kidsdeserveit
A3b: I have to say, my hubby is a HUGE supporter and doubt-squasher for me! He's always lifting me up and pushing me to be my best for kids and our school! #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A2-what has held me back when 1) afraid of the risk and 2) worrying about others’ feelings about what I’m doing. I’m getting over both! #KidsDeserveIt#oklaed
Modeling is always important, we expect Ss to be okay being out of their comfort zone, in turn we have to push ourselves and those around us to be creative, innovative and energizing. Typically = out of the BOX #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
I love doing this, too! Just got some really great, honest feedback from a couple of my freshman last week that I'm already going to implement. Our kids are smarter than we give them credit for! #oklaed
A4 - When we’re happy in our personal life, we’re better in our professional life. Airplane mode on my phone is the best, quick and super easy way to unplug! #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A4: This is something I struggle with often. I have to make myself disconnect. I've learned to set personal and professional boundaries more this than every before=happier #oklaed
A4: I disconnect from technology when my I'm in my classroom, but I disconnect from school from the time I get home until my daughter goes to bed. #oklaed
Modeling is always important, we expect Ss to be okay being out of their comfort zone, in turn we have to push ourselves and those around us to be creative, innovative and energizing. Typically = out of the BOX #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A4 It is important to disconnect to recharge, to press a reset button. When things happen in your busy work life, you need to just refocus. It is needed to wipe out any negativity that exists. I love going to the gym, talking to friends, going out, reading. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A4 - Probably still my biggest struggle as a teacher. But mostly it is simple things. Listening to a podcast on the drive home. Reading to my children. Watching sports, especially the @Cubs. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A4: I continue to ask "why" and work to make sure my belief still matches by behaviors. This self check keeps me from becoming something that goes against my belief. #workinprogress#oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A3) I'm so lucky my wife and daughter not only understand the time I spend away from home, but also accompany me most of the time. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A4: We need to unplug and leave everything away for a bit. Outside family time, I'm trying to unplug by actually going on a vacation for the 1st time in 3 years with the family. An actual vacation, no conferences or other family members tagging along. #oklaed
A4 Sometimes I need a break so I can look at things through fresh eyes. I almost always turn to reading fiction -- mysteries or thrillers -- for this purpose. #oklaed
I think to really make this impactful we have to sometimes let them know when we are out of our comfort zone. We can let our guard of perfection and control down at times. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A4: You have to take care of you to be able to take care of other people. We can’t count on others to make us happy, it has to come from within so taking time for just me time is imp. #KidsDeserveIt#OAESP1#oklaed#ccosa
A4: I disconnect during school. I use to be connected, but then I realized I need to be there for my students. It’s time they need someone who is focused on them. #oklaed
A4. I agree, happiness is key. And as a Mom, I want to hold on to ALL of the Moments, big and small, with my children. It makes me sad to think I've missed moments with them because I haven't always made an effort to unplug. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A4 - When we’re happy in our personal life, we’re better in our professional life. Airplane mode on my phone is the best, quick and super easy way to unplug! #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
#oklaed This was my goal last yr. Before that I was so consumed in the idea of wanting to be the best Ts I could be that I put everything into doing it. But since I started slowing down&focused more on me this past year I feel like I am able to do more for my Ss #KidsDeserveIt
A4) Disconnecting is important to maintain balance. My life away from school is just as important as my life at school. Living 45 minuets away allows me to disconnect and live my life! #KidsDeserveIt#oklaed
A4: Just like we want we'll-rounded Ss, we ourselves must be well-rounded. Our profession may be more a calling than a job, but that doesn't mean we can be successful if all we do is live & breathe ed. #kidsdeserveit#oklaed
A4) Your family deserves all of you at times also! It's important to let them have that time, and for you to share in that time as well. We also have to learn about our own kids #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A4: Disconnecting helps you keep a healthy balance in your life! It allows you to relax, regroup & refocus on what’s important! I like to disconnect by taking some ME time & doing things I like to do! Also, love spending time with my favorite people! #KidsDeserveIt#oklaed
A4 By disconnect, do you mean letting a child perform by himself? If that is the case, I scaffold the learning until he/she is confident. We all want independent learners. #oklaed
A4 Disconnecting is healthy. It allows me to recharge and reset. Ways I disconnect (I try my best but still struggle) are not responding to emails or doing work after a certain time at night. I also have work free days on the weekend #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
Q4: You have to remember the joy that surrounds you in the moment, if not time just passes you by. Run/bike rides with my husband and daughter. #oklaed
#oklaed A4: It's important for me to disconnect because I need to step back and think. I write, shop, see my grandkids, paint chairs, and exercise so that I can refresh and start over again. #KidsDeserveIt
A4: Disconnecting allows me the opportunity to reflect on what I am doing, where I am going, and where I currently am. It gives me space to recharge and refit, so I can reach my students where they need it the most. #oklaed
A4. Disconnecting lets you refocus. It allows you time to reflect. Once you step away things will be clearer. My go to disconnector is running. 🏃🏻♀️ #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A2: I get caught up in my own execution of plans. I have ideas I'd like to see in action, then I don't follow through bc I feel I've already thrown so many things at Ss & my team. #oklaed
A4-balance is something I’ve always struggled with. Unfortunately it took a medical event for this to hit Home. I try to focus on my students at work so I can be more effective and save time at home for me. Definitely an area for improvement. #kidsdeserveit#oklaed
So sorry I’m late!! Angela Clark Little | co-founder of @okpe4pe | @EdmondSchools Mom | Business Analyst | New puppy & Senior Weim owner so my life is straight chaos right now. Like I needed one more thing to do. 😳 😍#oklaed
A4: Turn off notifications and set to “Do not disturb.” Calls/texts from my husband and our active-duty son get through, but everything else bounces. #oklaed
A4: I spend time reading, watching movies, with my family- things that help me recharge so that I have that 💯 battery when I need it again #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt#pdbearchat
A4...It’s important to disconnect so a new view can be seen. Any professional needs to step back and see a different perspective. I like to disconnect by going to a movie, go on a short trip, or meet up with friends.#oklaed
A4: #oklaed I have been told that I pound, rather than play, the piano when I need to disconnect. Perhaps I need to be more closely in tune with my need before it becomes pounding!
A4. Wifey answers: Take a nap, watch TV, shopping, unplug from the teacher life. It's hard at times because everything is a teachable moment in some capacity.
#iTOLDyouSHEisAWESOMEsauce#oklaed
A1: Being consistant, firm, but fair! Seeking to understand my students and finding ways to show how much you care even in the moment is correction or redirection. #oklaed#BMEsTalk
A4 - Disconnecting is hard - especially when working w/Ss who experience a significant amount of trauma...I carry that w/me. BUT I have my people I can talk to, pray with, &cry with then let it go, so I can have balance. My family needs me present & my Ss #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
It’s important to disconnect to see what is around you and live in the moment. I’ve taken fewer pictures lately because I want to actually see what is there and not just the photo. #oklaed
A5 - Just focus on all the amazing things that are going on. Yes negativity may come around, but there are WAY more things to celebrate than to focus on negativity. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A4: It’s extremely important to disconnect so you can reflect and recharge your mindset. I go to the gym and read some Batman comics to disconnect. #oklaed
A5 Sometimes, if you just stay positive, the negativity will slink away on its own. If that fails, I go find more positive people to help build me up. #oklaed
A5: I've dealt with it 3 ways: 1. learn and move on. 2. take it because I want to hear what doesn't work. 3. go to my perler beads and build something awesome for a future lesson. #oklaed
A4b - there is also running....I do enjoy a good long run to let it all go or my guilty pleasure real housewives of whatever city 😂😳 #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A4. Me: #realtalk, I've picked up on two new "dream big" ideas to help unplug, especially when I read that our #okleg and #oklaed leaders continue to cut funding in education. Perhaps, my big dreams can help students in the future?
#hope
When I was awarded by fellow coaches in MT, my assistant had to give me the “wrap it up” signal half way through the thank-yous. Would take much longer here with #CPSREDS & #oklaed

A5: Fight it. Take a deep breath, do something for yourself that makes you happy, remind yourself why you’re there. Constant negativity can suck the life outta you if you let it. #oklaed
A5: When my 8 year old gets negative I make him tell me something he’s thankful for. The trick is getting myself to do the same thing. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A5 Situationally. Sometimes people just need to blow off steam. Sometimes, they're gathering an angry mob (with misinformation in hand).
But if it's directed at me, and I deserve it, I own it. That's all I know how to do. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
Q5: I really stink at this one...I attempt to see the good in everyone and every situation. I go to my oldies (but goodies) who are far wiser than I and just talk it out and try to learn and improve. #oklaed
A5: life’s too short to dwell in negativity, our students have enough of that in their lives. Find your joy. Laugh with your kids the rest fades away #oklaed
A5) Sometimes by directly confronting it, and others turning a deaf ear to it. I've never really paid much attention to why one or the other at different times, but passion possibly factors in somewhere. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A5. Negativity is the devil trying to take you down. Sometimes I let it get to me, but I go next door and have @Biobellrocks knock some sense into me. #oklaed
A5) I use to confront it as a personal challenge to me. That doesn't work. I have learned that listening, and allowing the anger to vent, leads to finding a solution to the root cause of the problem. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A5 No energy vampires @JonGordon11 the energy bus was a district wide book read. We live it! Hit negativity head on! No undermining the vision allowed! #Oklaed
A5- Look inward to determine if I need to make changes, to solve the problem. Or try to find a way to bring positivity to the situation, when something else is causing the problem #oklaed
A5 My #oneword2018 is CHOOSE. Sometimes I have to work hard to choose positivity over negativity. It is so easy to get drawn in especially if you are having a rough day. Sometimes I have to shut my classroom door for a while. #oklaed
A5 Continue to be positive in the face of negativity! Positivity is just as contagious as negativity and the reality is is that people want to be positive so we need to show them the way and stay the course #oklaed
A5: I try to push positivity when I can but most times stay clear and if needed, go back to my island of fantastic students and positive thoughts! #oklaed
A5: just use my voice to keep things positive. If I stay quiet & the convo stays negative I have nobody to blame. If I stay positive with my voice I am stating my stance and most likely others will follow. Be a leader. #oklaed
Q5 #oklaed Preparation- surround yourself with positivity (Quotes, encouraging friends, habits of positive speaking) and the nuclear option: my drawer of inspiration- letters from the successes in my life.
A5: Try & find something positive in every situation! The only thing you have control over is YOU & how YOU respond! Smile, speak positive words, & keep pushing forward! Make the good so loud that it drowns out the negative! #KidsDeserveIt#oklaed
A5 - RUN AWAY - RUN FAR FAR AWAY!!! Even if that means I eat in the lunch room by myself. I also have people who I've asked to hold me accountable if I become negative - it is a CANCER! #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A5-probably sounds silly but walk away. Not getting sucked in to the conversations. Surround yourself with positive people. But also turning it to the positive. Some don’t even get how negative they really are. #kidsdeserveit#oklaed
A4: It’s Important to disconnect so that you can fill your cup back up. How can you serve if you are emotionally and physically empty? I disconnect thru meditation and prayer. #oklaed#BMEsTalk#KidsDeserveIt
A5: Visit a classroom; think of others’ viewpoint, taking a good look in the mirror. Maybe I missed something. But I typically will then connect w those who lift me up. #oklaed
A5 Situationally. Sometimes people just need to blow off steam. Sometimes, they're gathering an angry mob (with misinformation in hand).
But if it's directed at me, and I deserve it, I own it. That's all I know how to do. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A5: At the end of each staff meeting I have Ts write at least one celebration. I stick them to the back of my office door for inspiration when negativity shows up. I also read celebration posts in our Google Classroom, visit with our Ss, exercise, etc. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A5 Many times the negative remarks come from someone that feels like no one ever listens to them. Let them get it out, don't belittle their feelings, but don't act as though you agree with them. Would rather they vent to me than explode on someone else #oklaed
A5: Negativity? First, consider the source. Then decide: ignore, react, or respond, but generally, slow to speak, quick to listen...is wise. Not everything needs to even be given attention. #oklaed
As a T I removed myself from any negativity. As an administrator, that option doesn't exist. So, now I have a strategy to deal with it head on. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A5- I CHOOSE my attitude, thoughts, and words carefully. These are all deliberate CHOICES that I can control. Light and happy thoughts will always win! 🌟 #oklaed
A5: So exhausting, but I have to keep in mind that it may be me causing that reaction. If I cant find the cause in negativity, it may be ME... #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
#oklaed A5: I greet people with a smile, I always find a solution to combat that negativity. I give advice, I stay around people who are positive, or I just ignore it. #KidsDeserveIt
A5: Look for the good in the situation if possible. If I have just dealt with a tough situation, I️ take a walk or go visit a classroom. Key is to remain positive and focus on the positives. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A5: first, consider the source. Then, choose kind/ Choose positive....follow our classroom motto “When given the choice between being right or being kind, Choose kind” (Dr.Dyer).. and stay out of the drama 🙄 #oklaed#kidsdeserveit#pdbearchat
A5: That is such a hard one. Especially the last year with local and federal politics. I try to shake it off as quickly as possible. Sometimes is is a literal shaking of my body #oklaed
A5: "Somebody needs me, therefore I teach." from Larry Bell. I remind myself of this quote to encourage me to continue moving forward in the face of negativity. #oklaed
A5) oh this question is so my topic!! In the world of ed advocacy, there is so much negativity and people love to criticize those of us who remain positive. I encourage people to learn what it is to celebrate small victories bc there are many! #oklaed
A5 I always turn to kindness. Try to put myself in others' shoes & be grateful for all the positive I have in my life. I'm blessed to have a best friend to talk to & keep me in check. Always there with a listening ear & ready to make things more positive. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A5: I am such an optimist, I can see good in almost ANYTHING.(which annoys my husband) But honesty, it kind of irritates me when adults are being negative. And I dont allow it from my students. #oklaed
I started a gratitude journal in January. I am writing down at least one great thing that happened in my day right before I leave to go home! #kidsdeserveit#oklaed
A5. I take a deep breath. Re-focus on the kids and go out and do 10 positive things for our school to counteract the negativity.
Then schedule a tough conversation about school climate. #oklaed
"Even on your worst day, you are still some child's best hope." from Larry Bell. Another one of my favorite quote that I saw on the wall of the school where I currently intern at. This is how I deal with negativity. #oklaed
A5: A book..."Dealing with Difficult Parents" was well received by teachers. When we brought out the book "Dealing with Difficult Teachers"....they weren't so amused. Funny administrator moments. BTW.. I work with great teachers... ALL OF THEM!
#oklaed
A5: Take a deep breath... listen, reflect, let them purge and usually follow up at a later point in time. Try to remember 17% are at odds at any time w any decision. Ask a trusted friend for perspective if needed. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A6 - I'm an 11th grade English teacher so - Between the World & Me by Ta-neishi Coates, In Cold Blood by Truman Capote, and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain #oklaed
A6 - I think this is a little different as a high school history teacher. But my three favorite to discuss with students are: Animal Farm, Of Mice & Men, and The Great Gatsby. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A6: I read "When you give a pig a pancake" to my geometry class every year!! Other than that, Im open for suggestions.....ps. I teach HS math (Alg 1 thru Trig)#oklaed
A6) When I was in the classroom I liked To Kill a Mockingbird, I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings, and In the Year of the Boar and Jackie Robinson. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
Yes! I try to do that through a summary email to our staff, identifying positive things our adults have done that week. Staff meetings and announcements are for the same reasons for kids, faculty and staff. I may have gotten this from a #PrincipalMatters podcast 😉 #oklaed

#oklaed
A6 We do a lot of independent reading, so I really love recommending Eleanor & Park, All American Boys, The Hate U Give, The Missing Series by Margaret Peterson Haddix #oklaed
A6: (5th Grade) Wonder is my time favorite, Skeleton Creek is always one of my students’ favorites, ALong Walk to Water, The One and Only Ivan... there are so many....#oklaed#KidsDeserveIt#pdbearchat
A6 At the secondary level, I love reading To Kill a Mockingbird. Just as powerful lessons about equality today as we needed in the 1960’s #kidsdeserveit#oklaed
A6 As a HS math teacher, I haven’t exactly read books with my Ss...but am open to suggestions of what to read/how to integrate because that sounds like nothing but good... #oklaed
A6 Some great picture books to read and discuss kindness, changing our community and being you. Love these: Being Me. The Most Magnificent Thing. What Matters. I have been privileged to do virtual collaborations with all 3 Canadian books. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
How wonderful would it be if you, the ELA teacher and the students did a cross-curricular read? Students will be able to see how the literature relates to history and how history relates to the reading. #oklaed#KidsDeserveIt
A6 - I think this is a little different as a high school history teacher. But my three favorite to discuss with students are: Animal Farm, Of Mice & Men, and The Great Gatsby. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A5. Negativity? I want to do this... #JOKESjustJOKES
Seriously, It's all about reaping and sowing good stuff. If I give good vibes, I'll reap them. If I hang around good vibes, I'll reap them. If I'm around negativity, negativity will give off bad vibes. #oklaed
A1: I conduct extensive research into current trends and flawlessly incorporate students' colloquialisms into class discussions. I'm sure even Hattie would admit this has a very on fleek effect size.
#Oklaed
A6: I read Bob is a Unicorn and Cordelia at the start of the year to cover reading voice and thinking voice! I love the discussions we have over picture books!
I also teach the entire Crispin series by Avi. It even turns my literature haters around! #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
#oklaed A6: Likes vs. Legacy by @mikesmithlive because it discusses what is important in life, your legacy not about how many likes you receive through social media. My Ss have the choice about what they read; we have read To Kill a Mockingbird and Great Expectations.
Great books! I'm a high school ELA teacher as well. Create collaborations with elementary schools and use picture books. Amazing experience! #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
A6: “I Knew You Could” is a personal favorite that I give to every student on the last day of school! I put a personal message inside each book that encourages Ss to DREAM BIG & to remember that I believe in them! #KidsDeserveIt#oklaed
My students enjoy me reading the children’s book I wrote when I was in college but never had it published...Which Balloon, Teddy? I use it to teach theme, and it works.#oklaed

A6: #oklaed Stone Fox by Gardiner; Pink and Say by Pollaco; Officer Buckle and Gloria by Rathmann. There are others! It all goes back to a break-through moment with a particular student or group of students!
A2: I don't understand the question. Why would any teacher be held back from trying something new? I mean, as long as it's theoretically sound, supported by some research...we're not talking about something crazy like requiring students to wear capes everyda--although...
#oklaed
The 10th grade Pre-AP T and I do some co planning to stay close to the same time era, so we can reinforce things in both classes. I will reference books as they are discussing them. #oklaed#kidsdeserveit
