Christine from non-snowy Alberta, Canada! Kinder T and Learning Coach, who loves going out as a family and cutting our tree down in the forest near our house! #kinderchat
Carrie Kindergarten teacher from Prince Edward Island- my favourite holiday tradition is to spend Christmas day relaxing. I purposefully don’t do a lot that day #kinderchat
Faige sub teacher in Los Angeles. Favorite Christmas tradition enjoy holiday decorations at home and in winter travels. Chanukah tradition lighting candles and eating latkes #kinderchat
A1: I don't as the G1s do a whole unit of inquiry about traditions and celebrations. We do talk about Santa and gingerbread and stuff though #kinderchat
A1:Yes! For sure! Last year, especially, I had a very multi-ethnic class. It was so great to be able to celebrate the holidays of everyone in the class. I find my parents are always open to the idea of their children learning about other holidays and cultures #kinderchat
It’s interesting. 15 years ago, diversity in PEI was Catholic/Protestant- I’m not even exaggerating. But now, we have people from all over the world. Some places have accepted this far more than others on the Island #kinderchat
A1 We taught all the ways families in our kinder class celebrated winter holidays: Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanza, Los Posadoes, St. Lucia, Lunar New Year, and other’s that families shared with us #kinderchat
In the city, we moved toward Winter Celebrations at this time of the year. We will be having the Christmas Concert this week in my country school #kinderchat
We’re still navigating the waters of inclusive language when it comes to holidays and winter themed concerts. But I think it’s all part of a growing process- and we don’t always know we need to grow- until we do #kinderchat

I used to be afraid of offending, so I never really mentioned any holidays. I think, the biggest lesson I’ve learned, is that we don’t have to get rid of holidays in order to be inclusive. We just have to think about others too. Does that makes sense? #kinderchat
A2: we can include all by creating a more general celebration like a pot luck or a party for winter rather than Christmas! everyone likes a party #kinderchat
We also have a wonderful holiday sing that the music teachers work with the different grades. Very inclusive of the different families we have #kinderchat So Christmas , Hanukkah and Mexican American traditions among others
A2 That’s why we also share spring holidays that families celebrate like the Persian New Year, Passover and Easter, Ramadan as traditions and often through books! #kinderchat
A2: In the past I have had those who don’t celebrate any holidays because of religious reasons. I make sure I speak with the families to find out what their expectations are. usually everyone is very accommodating. We focus more on the the season then #kinderchat
Yes we are sensitive to the religious aspects of holidays but don’t want it to only be about parties so focus on similarities of traditions as a way of giving, sharing and show pride #kinderchat At times a fine balance but while I taught it was a joyful experience

A3: literature is a the primary tool for knowledge, learning more about the holidays with give kids a personal connection, perspective, &sense of direction around this time. #kinderchat
A3: I find books that cover each of the holidays that may occur during the winter months. I feel like there was a Google Doc that someone made with these awhile ago. #kinderchat
Over the years I’ve had kinders whose parents asked they not participate in any celebration including birthdays. We let parents know those days and either child cane in at a later time or stayed home. #kinderchat We worked with parents to help meet their needs
A3: Literature is so helpful! Anytime I can find a nice book that explains the holiday I take it! Especially holidays I am not as familiar with. It’s so great to have access to books about Diwali and Ramadan that I might not have had a few years ago #kinderchat
I think books are a great way. So many opportunities for open discussion with the class and also classmates. Literature will be a big part when I'm a T. #KinderChat

A4: Keeping parents in the loop about what we are learning about allows them to make personal and cultural connections to what's happening at school #kinderchat
A4: Part of our Social Studies curriculum covers knowing that other families have traditions and celebrations. It’s nice to be able to share with others what we like to do, what we celebrate #kinderchat
And we need to spend a long, long time on the early counting before we start with digits (symbols) and addition/subtraction. #pkchat#elemmathchat#kinderchat#1stchat
[UPDATE] Hierarchical Inclusion, Perceptual Subitizing and Conceptual Subitizing added to the Counting and Quantity Principles resource page!

A4 We have a major school wide Olympic events later in the year and all grades participate as countries. Curriculum focuses on these cultures. During the year and winter holidays include cultural traditions #kinderchat

We do, actually! But I don’t know them offhand. We have a whole set of big books and curriculum that was developed with teachers across Canada. #kinderchat
A4) I usually do a holidays around the world in Dec w/ Globe Trott Scott (bought somewhere off of TPT-adapted 2 my Ss). Teach in the moment w/ kinders 2 #kinderchat
I like this idea as a starting point - a welcome, an invitation. As an @ibpyp school we try to encourage looking at things from the global perspective #kinderchat

A4: Books / literature would be mine. I know someone previously mentioned pictures. #KinderChat If you have a student... You could have them talk about it with the class as well
So much music, art, food, involved in culture. Holidays are always a jumping off spot, but I think these are where we get to the heart of it all #kinderchat
Agree at this age/grade the concrete and senses are the way to introduce different cultures and hopefully gain a better inclusive understanding that though different similarities are stronger than differences #kinderchat

A6: One thing I’ve been thinking on lately is the idea of inclusion vs. exclusion. Cultural awareness doesn’t mean I have to sacrifice my culture for someone else. It means instead of excluding someone, I try to include all #kinderchat

When we understand the “other” we no longer view each other in that way. Wouldn’t it be great that these kinders be in the forefront of not looking at cultures as the other #kinderchat
