Good evening! During tonight’s #ILAchat, we want to examine the opportunities and challenges present in student #screentime (though feel free to expand that out to adults as well).
It falls on schools to address issues around #digitalliteracy and #medialiteracy and to try to bridge the #digitaldivide, but how do educators synthesize the use of digital tools and resources in their classrooms in a way that benefits students? #ILAchat
Tonight, we have @wiobyrne and @teachKHT, educators well immersed in the screen time debate, to help guide this #ILAchat as we navigate both the opportunities digital tools provide and the challenges that arise when bringing them into the classroom.
My name is Emile, and this is my second tweet chat! I am from the University if Northern Iowa majoring in El Ed! Can’t wait to get started! #ILAchat#UNIlited
I’m Stephanie, a literacy teacher educator from NY. My work focuses on #LiteracyCoaching and supporting teacher learning through tech, so I am especially looking forward to this chat! #ILAchat
Hi #ILAchat. I’m Kristen Hawley Turner from Drew University in NJ. I work with teachers through #drewteach (https://t.co/XWBw5d0OCG) to think about how we incorporate screens effectively into instruction.
I’m also the mother of 11-year-old twins and I care deeply about screens in their lives. Check out my struggles with social media at https://t.co/xFed2C32dF#ILAchat

Hi,
I am a doctoral candidate researching assistive technology and reading comprehension. I'm particularly focused on the effect of using text to speech technology for students with dyslexia. #ILAchat
Q1: In a time when digital learning environments not only exist but also are encouraged, what constitutes #screentime? What does it look like in your classroom or in your life? #ILAchat
What is #screentime? Screentime is the mobile device that I carry everyday. Screentime is the computer that I'm usually two feet from in my office, at home, & in the classroom. Screentime is the media hub of the home. Heck, there are even screens when I'm pumping gas. #ILAChat Q1
A1: For me, screen time revolves around the devices that we can hold close: laptops, tablets and phones that we use throughout the day. Television and video games would be two additional formats to consider for students (and some adults!). #ILAchat
Q1: In a time when digital learning environments not only exist but also are encouraged, what constitutes #screentime? What does it look like in your classroom or in your life? #ILAchat
A1. I think #Screentime gets a bad rap. While some view it as zombies sucked into the screen, for me it is a way to feed my curiosity, deepen my understanding, expand my network, & stay informed. #ILAChat
A1: For me, the balance of consuming vs. creating is at the core of the debate about #screentime When do we (or our students) have time to mindfully consume and, in turn, then create new digital media? #ILAchat
Q1: Screentime in my classroom will look like, having zoom conversations with classrooms globally. Teaching computer science in a cross curricular way. Allowing iPad time with educational learning tools as a center space in the classroom. #ILAchat#unilited
A1: what I consider #screentime in my life is my phone, and my computer! I’m constantly on my computer for school, and phones have become such a big part of everyday life! #ILAchat#UNIlited
A1: I have not seen a universally excepted definition of screen time. Personally for me it just means time in front of devices. There is interest in the scientific community to research this question more. #ILAchat
Q1: In a time when digital learning environments not only exist but also are encouraged, what constitutes #screentime? What does it look like in your classroom or in your life? #ILAchat
Excellent point. I think we've grouped these devices...and lumped in tech/edtech...and started to conflate this all with digital, social spaces. We need a better way to codify this term. #ilachat
A1 also need to consider what counts as screen time on teacher evaluation tools - ecers, Ellco, Cor from highscope all count different things in +\- ways #ilachat
#Screentime is any interaction someone has with a digital device. It’s at its best when it’s mindful and intentional interactions that lead to personal or collective growth. Could be reading, could be creating, ideally done with mastery over ones attention. #ILAchat
A1: We ended up having some interesting conversations around this one. Most of us in the office are on computers all day, but some people didn't view that as screen time because it was work. #ILAchat
Are there different forms of #screentime? Are some more valuable than others? Is screentime more "valuable" when my children are playing Minecraft...as opposed to mindlessly consuming silly cat videos? #ILAChat Q2
Similar question: If my 3-year-old uses an old iPhone to listen to music, is that #screentime? Because little man wants to listen to music all. the. time. How do you separate the delivery mechanism from the activity? #ILAchat
A2: I value the screen time that serves a purpose: to create and represent ideas, to connect with and learn from others, to gain access to texts and media and to share our voices. #ILAchat
Similar question: If my 3-year-old uses an old iPhone to listen to music, is that #screentime? Because little man wants to listen to music all. the. time. How do you separate the delivery mechanism from the activity? #ILAchat
A2: Certainly, we all use our #screentime to view videos, read text, play games, and interact with software/websites. That said, I wonder to what extent we can help students shift to producing, filming, designing, and creating. #ilachat
A2: I think there are many different types of screen time. In a classroom setting those that encourage educational gain are the most important. But I also think those screens that allow destress are also important to have. Such as TV and social media. #ILAchat
Q2 most valuable for me screentime is interest driven and/or with support from teachers, parents peers when the child’s safety is maintained Bonus points if child is creating something. #ilachat
This is the battle I've been fighting for some time. We privilege one form of text over others. Online reading? Some say not "real" reading. Audiobooks? Some say not "real" reading. #ilachat
A2: I value the #screentime where I can connect with educators and grow. As an undergrad, I really appreciate being able to connect to expand my thinking. A great example is this tweet chat. I love seeing others ideas because it’s such an influence on my own! #ILAchat#UNIlited
And, to what extent are those choices driven by the reader/writer and to what extent are they driven by the device, the app, the website, the advertiser, or other ghost in the machine? #ilachat
In reply to
@EduQuinn, @LaraDeloza, @teachKHT, @krismarley12
A2: importance depends on purpose. Focus on skills needed for students to navigate skillfully, advocate purposefully, and create passionately sharing their voice with the 🌎#ILAchat
Pet peeve of mine. It’s just a different medium. I have read The Bell Jar a dozen times, but listening to Maggie Gyllenhaal read it made it feel like a new text. I think those who consider it cheating to listen to books maybe don’t understand it as an art form. #ILAchat
A2 My 2nd graders use our iPads to read, connect with others, or create things. That’s all! It’s tempting to put “educational” games on them, but I think it’s important to avoid. They have enough of that in their lives! #ILAchat (btw I’m Emily from MI chiming in before #G2Great!)
#screentime vital to children's future? We have (& should have) concerns about screentime. But, it's a necessary tool/skillset for ability to succeed...& survive in their futures. We live in a connected, technologized society...& it's only getter better/worse.
#ILAChat Q3
A2: Ones that yield personal or collective growth. Creation is usually a positive indicator, however consumption is also necessary to learn and inspire new creations. I appreciate in value social interaction, but personal independent use is not necessarily bad. #ILAchat
A3: Our world today revolves around technology and digital tools. If students do not have access, then they cannot develop the specialized skill set for technology the future will demand. #ILAchat
When, where, why, and how we choose particular screens are important. I can't read a book on my desktop, even with the Kindle app and annotation tools. Too many distractions. Have to turn on "do not disturb" and read on phone or tablet. #ilachat
The more active consumption of screen time the better. For reading particularly emphasize active reading and that shouldn't change if they use the screen. Also screen time where you are creating something can be very beneficial. #ILAchat
A3: Our world today revolves around technology and digital tools. If students do not have access, then they cannot develop the specialized skill set for technology the future will demand. #ILAchat
A3: Access to digital tools is vital for students because it allows them to prepare for the outside world, and to also explore different aspects of hands on learning in a classroom. #ILAchat#unilited
A3: Student learning transcends the classroom, so #mobile tools are especially important to continuing digital language and literacy practices in many places. #ILAchat
A3: Going to reframe the question. To what extent do we help students see acts of reading AND writing, viewing AND filming, listening AND recording as vital in and out of school? How can they actively engage? That's the vital component, not the device. #ilachat
A3: Going to reframe the question. To what extent do we help students see acts of reading AND writing, viewing AND filming, listening AND recording as vital in and out of school? How can they actively engage? That's the vital component, not the device. #ilachat
Q3 its a matter of access to content inmany places. Funds to libraries cut. More parents working = less time to go to libraries and programs. Books from school curriculum going digital....plus equity, too. Loads of my college students love ability to get content audio. #ilachat
A3: Devices play a critical role in facilitating students’ social interactions as well as their creative capabilities. Lack of access and support for thoughtful use of these tools limits the ability for personal growth #ILAChat
I love that you included recording here. I think of all the multimodal literacy practices students (and teachers and others) engage in especially outside of school! #ILAChat
And we need to be teaching them how to engage with the tools and online environments in meaningful ways. We can’t just assume that “digital natives” understand how to leverage tech to make a positive impact. #ILAchat#socialLEADia
A3: Technology tools can help empower individuals to reach our highest educational potential. As such having the tools available well the time is critical. Many students with disabilities depend on technology do you access their education. #ILAchat
A3: The world is constantly changing. Technology is such a big part of today’s society, and it’s so important to connect with others. My university now offers a minor for which you can specialize in technology. #ILAchat#UNIlited
Speaking of libraries...the digital offerings lately are incredible. I LOVE the Hoopla app!!! to bring graphic novels into the classroom. #ilachathttps://t.co/fukTYO38tS#ilachat
Agreed. We were just talking about this with @anya1anya. How much mindfulness, balance, and awareness do teachers need to teach in an age of screentime? #ilachat
A3: This has been my mission this year. Framing access outside of school as #FutureReady learning - giving students the opportunity to name time, place, and pace. #flexiblelearning
Clever + Seesaw + Canvas working together in symphony 🎼 #ILAchat
A4: I hear a lot of focus on the quantity of screen time, but I prefer to focus on the quality. Two hours of video games is drastically different than two hours of digital reading or writing. #ILAchat
Educator's role in #screentime?
Need to find meaningful, authentic ways to embed screentime into instruction. Focus on student learning objectives. Find offline ways to build digital dispositions. Lastly, balance, mindfulness, grit, play, creativity, empathy....
#ILAChat Q6
Q4 that the recommendations made by top-level organizations actually reflect what the norm is. APA says one amount of time with co-viewing and it’s much more in all the returned parent report data #ilachat
It is a great question and a timeless one, too. Going to outsource to the Talking Heads here 🎶Same as it ever was🎶. The challenge, to an extent, is that teachers might not have direct experience with the digital nuances of social development. #ILAChat
A4: #screentime is thought to be a distraction. It can be when used unintentionally. Mindful reading, writing, creating, & interaction is constructive. I like to use mobile devices to connect w/ my niece and nephew in San Antonio! We sing & share. @amysemingson#ILAChat
I had a conversation with a doctor who was on the APA committee to state screen time limits. He told me that what the committee wanted to say was “spend at least 2 hours outside” rather than set limits. They knew that not all screen time is created equal #ILAchat
A4: Let the teaching goals and the students need drive what technology student use for literacy. Technology is just a tool. All education must be driven by the desired learning outcomes and use the best tools for the job. #ILAchat
Is it important to have access to the devices/tools in order to have authentic experiences with them? Otherwise it would be like learning to type on those cardboard cutouts of a keyboard with no feedback. In some way, the device does matter...doesn't it? #ILAchat
Nor have they ever, right? As literacy teachers, is it part of our job now? I’m working on a project focused on the ethics of teaching digital literacy. It leads me to believe teachers think it is part of their jobs #ILAChat
I think we want to help students be device agnostic. In that sense, the device doesn’t matter if it has a screen. It’s understanding the practices of connecting, consuming, and creating #ILAChat
A4: I think a lot of people think screentime is bad or a distraction, but I have to disagree. When screentime is used, it can help further the learning of reading, writing, etc. #ILAchat#UNIlited
I also think that a big part of digital literacy is the differentiation component. When used creatively, technology can lead to an authentic, student-centered experience. #ILAchat
Or that there is limited learning in some #screentime activities like online games. Players learn problem solving, how to communicate together and work as a team, how to research the best strategies for self-improvement. #ILAchat
A2. My students also use their iPads to read and annotate on text, use Apple Pen to answer questions & digital documents and submit to online educational tools such as google classroom. Their peers get to view each other’s work and give each other feedback #ilachat#screentime
A4 When using digital tools to improve literacy skills, teachers, parents, and students need to understand how to leverage technology to create, engage, and collaborate rather than having #screentime be passive. #ILAchat
A5: There’s some community education that has to happen. Screens are important in contemporary learning and we need to teach reading and writing on screens in school. Not all parents buy that. #ILAchat
butting in late, I'm so sorry. I work with unaccompanied and separated immigrants. our kids don't get any individual screentime in our school. I used to think this meant they got none at all. I didn't appreciate all the screentime they got in the foster home/ their COO. #ilachat
A5: Educators can show students how technology can empower their learning, along with their social and entertainment lives. We can model ways to use technology to read, write, create and learn with appropriate digital citizenship. #ILAchat
Gotta hit the road home, #ILAChat. Just want to make a quick plug to watch tonight’s #MURSDleads interview with @anya1anya on The Art of Screen Time. It’s a useful book for families and practitioners alike. Pluse @wiobyrne was awesome in it... https://t.co/C3SUjKq2PN
A5: We also need to use screens when the tool has a purpose for real world application. I wonder about quiz games and other screen-based apps that don’t ask for higher order thinking or connecting to learn outside the classroom walls #ILAChat
A5: Helping students understand that screens/technology are just a tool and it's how you use them that really matters. Helping guide students through selecting the best tools for them to achieve their educational goals. #ILAchat
A5: Screentime gives students their digital citizenship. I would have never thought before coming to college that I could use social media to connect with other educators in ways like this! This was shown to me by my professors. #ILAchat#UNIlited
Educator's role in #screentime?
Educators need to help students find/understand balance. Educators also need to think about mixing high tech with high touch.
See your kiddos. Let them see you lead the way.
#ILAChat Q5
"my immigrant kids have NO screens" is a stupid myth I fell into far easily, though I should've know better. my immigrant family has plenty of screentime on the islands. we have a big independent living skills program in our school, digital literacy needs to be embedded #ilachat
There a number of valuable resources online that students can use to teinforce their knowledge and skills. For example there are interactive games for science and math I use for mini lesson and independent time. Student love these activities #ilachat#screentime
A5: Important to think about using tools intentionally versus being addicted. I know I struggle w/ phone addiction! Reading & writing with purpose w/ curated digital content helps. Modeling digital citizenship, critical thinking, & encouraging innovoation w/ tools. #ILAChat
A5 Schools need to also provide professional development and coaching around 21st century practices that drive the purpose of using technology as learning tool. #ILAchat#pedagogyfirst
listening the audio version was kind of an accident. I couldn't get ebook file to cooperate with my ereader. Glad it worked out the way it did! #ILAchat

A6: As a parent, I recognize the pull my children have to their screens and connected world. I honor it, but set clear guidelines and provide a rationale for why these guidelines exist. #ILAchat
Q5 parent education, teaching kiddos skills they need to be civically engaged and having access to digital resources, and talking about/highlighting the ways in which screens connect (as opposed to how they isolate) #ilachat
I also think those who consider audiobooks cheating haven’t thought very hard about why we read. I can think of a ton of good reasons to read, and none of them are “so my eyeballs won’t dry up and turn into sawdust.” Reading is for our minds, not for our eyes.
In reply to
@LaraDeloza, @hickstro, @teachKHT, @wiobyrne, @krismarley12
Social development=a community’s responsibility in order to ensure a sustainable society. I’d like to think of it as we’re educators 1st that happen to have a particular expertise to share. Sometimes we put too much emphasis on the modifier before teacher. #ilachat
Great question...I think there are tons of things we can do to teach the dispositions and habits kids will need while online...but using offline tools and practices. I can share more later.
#ilachat
I avoid audiobooks bc I only have 50% hearing. I have to be explicit about this bc I do believe in audiobooks philosophically. But raises a good point - thinking about reading in terms of accessibility for hearing/vision impaired and not making judgments on format. #ILAchat

A6: Looking at the whole technology ecosystem. It includes the hardware, software, internet cables or network etc. These factors have to come together for technology to work efficiently. Even in the US we still have areas where high-speed Internet is limited. #ilachat
Q6: How can educators address the challenges that families and caregivers face around technology and its usage? #ILAchat
I think more discussion...and less technopanic is needed. I talked about the NY Times pieces last week in my newsletter (https://t.co/ZWIrKaHsZ9)
It may be helpful for schools to host a parent night to provide training of specific technology resources/ways to monitor their child’s technology use. #ILAChat
I suppose I thought that the uniqueness of our population meant that their home access would be limited. but nah. and even the kids who had no experience with screens prior to immigrating figure out YouTube pretty quick. #ilachat
Q6 acknowledge context and cultural values. These often drive some of the real or imagined/projected challenges we speak of. For example - less safe neighborhoods correlated to reduced time outside correlated to increased screen time. #ilachat
A6 Most parents are concerned focus time limits and exposure to inappropriate content. I advise them to have students use technology in an open/shared space at home & to turn off the tech. Charge tech in the kitchen or living room. #ILAchat
Yes, I would totally count audiobooks as reading! I listen to books all of the time (especially when I walk the dog!) There are SO many benefits: listen to a fluent reader, access to books that may be a bit difficult, stretch vocabulary, increase volume of reading, etc. #ILAchat

I’ve worked with a lot of teachers in your situation. They have advocated for BYOD (collected devices at metal detectors to use in class!), written grants for Chromebooks, and made it happen. You can too! https://t.co/GJoToBSoRA#ILAChat@DonorsChoose

The CRAAP assessment can totally be done with printed materials, and I feel like that's one piece of digital literacy you can't figure out by poking at buttons #ilachat
A7: Privilege pedagogy over technology. We must model how and when to use technology to support learning, as well as how and when to choose not to use it as well. We need to teach students how to make intentional decisions behind their screen time and technology use. #ILAchat
A6: I think educators can have a conversation with families. Explaining the importance of screentime while also keeping in mind the disadvantages. A conversation with families can help with so much misunderstanding and help educate! #ILAchat#UNIlited
You also learn how to pronounce the words. Lots of avid reads might know what a word means when they see it, but they haven't necessary heard it said out loud to know what it sounds like. #ILAchat

I'm thinking of the Matthew Effect. When we read more, particularly more complex text, we are exposed to more sophisticated vocabulary, thus increasing our vocabularies. Therefore, we must find ways to increase access to text for striving readers. https://t.co/j7FCz1hICT#ILAchat

I learn so much through YouTube. I pull up a video and watch it a dozen times before working on the car, rebuilding a computer, or making pepper jelly. #ilachat
We’d like to thank everyone for attending this conversation around student #screentime, particularly our hosts @wiobyrne and @teachKHT. Please give them a follow. #ILAchat
Thanks for the article. Someone had recently just asked me if I add citations regarding if there was a difference between gaining vocabulary through audiobooks vs. traditional books. How do you seen any work on vocabulary growth in different reading contexts? #ILAchat

Make sure to visit @wiobyrne’s webpage for more info about #screentime, #edtech, and #digitalliteracy. He has a blog, a newsletter, and round-ups of current articles; it is a treasure trove of resources for educators. #ILAchat
A7: A great time for screentime is to show examples of things! I’m the type of person who learns best by watching! A kindergarten classroom I was in used screentime to help the students draw Johnny Appleseed! #ILAchat#UNIlited
Please also continue the convo at https://t.co/FGYnEPzG0l
We're using Flipgrid to host a discussion about Screentime. It is an open research project...so feel free to chime in, and share with students as well. #ilachat
