Please share who you are, how & where you "gladiate" for students!
#EduGladiators
Good morning...will be on as long i have service (traveling in Mo!) i am Colleen, I #gladiate for my Exploring Trojans and Titans in Troy, MO! #edugladiators
Is this your 1st time in a chat?
It's fun & easy to jump right in & share your thoughts or ask more Qs! Here's how...
Qs drop as Q1...Q2...& you answer A1...A2...
Don't forget to include #EduGladiators hashtag & follow
@EduGladiators
where ALL of our Qs drop from!
Good morning, #edugladiators & #nt2t. Would you rather give your full, focused attention to a single chat or divide said attention between two lively virtual conversations? I'm Brian. I teach middle-school students English in Colorado, & I know what I'm choosing.
Good morning #edugladiators! I'm Cathleen and I teach 8th graders English in Virginia. I also host a student empowerment chat called #unlockingheroes at 10 am EST. Nice to be here!
A1. We have shifted the mindset from “what’s good for adults to what’s good for kids”. We have empowered our staff to make those decisions that help support kids. #edugladiators
A1: The ultimate cultural capital is how you make people feel. What you say and/or do for someone can be forgotten but how you make someone feel leaves an everlasting impression. As @MrsNiemiec loves to say “Choose Kind.” #EduGladiators
A1)Relationships. I can tell you that if a staff member has good relationships with Ss, it goes a long way. The Ss know who is looking out for their best interests. You can’t fake that. #EduGladiators
I’m also reflecting on how we teach people to be responsible for their emotions instead of putting that responsibility on someone else. Aren’t I responsible for how I feel? #EduGladiators
A1 My response to this Q saddens me. We seem to give priority to families w/ better connections than others. I advocate & #gladiate for 'underdog'. #edugladiators
A1: The students in my class go around and solve community issues. The kids have noticed however that the more they do more people pay attention in the community. They were even invited to start the town Christmas parade! Service is culture capital for my students. #EduGladiators

A1: In my rural MO school, it's these three for Ss:
*Drive self to school
*Sports
*Have job/money
For me, relationships. and like @PaulONeill1972 said, how you make people feel. Some people make you feel good to be around them. I want to be that people. #EduGladiators
Good morning #EduGladiators coming in from a great #PD4uandme chat! Kelly from VirginiaBeach, Gifted Resource T, author and founder of #champforkids chat (Tues 8est) 🥊🥊❤️❤️🥊🥊
A1: As a school founded on the principles of inclusion and with students from 48 countries, there is a strong sense of embracing difference. #edugladiators
A1: I see CC surrounding those people who have several years in education and have been a positive influence in the school and community. They have earned respect! 🙏🏻 #EduGladiators
A1 My response to this Q saddens me. We seem to give priority to families w/ better connections than others. I advocate & #gladiate for 'underdog'. #edugladiators
A1) Accountable talk/speech, how to respond to someone when theh disagree with you and have a conversation to enhance learning not to create division. #EduGladiators
A1: For minorities, being able to effectively code switch is the very definition of CC. For those that do so well, they increase chances of access. It comes at a personal cost and should not be needed, but that’s the current reality. #EduGladiators

A1: Cultural capital example includes students getting information about college from school resources. This may include Ts and school counselors. #EduGladiators
A1 Having had rounds of student-led conferences the past two days, two elements of cultural capital I heard valued in repeated conversations w/many middle-schoolers & their families: student agency, plus development of executive functioning skills #edugladiators
Colleen that is super important! It's one of the reason I do class debates. People can disagree but their opinion should not dictate if I can get along with them! #EduGladiators
A1 People that feel appreciated work hard bc of it. So in my humble novice opinion, you enhance cultural capital with simple acknowledgements and kindness. I once had an admin that left monthly Thank You notes in my mailbox. It motivated me to keep on keeping on! #EduGladiators
I’m also reflecting on how we teach people to be responsible for their emotions instead of putting that responsibility on someone else. Aren’t I responsible for how I feel? #EduGladiators
A1: creating a culture and climate where we value diversity, trust, kindness in everyone! Everyone brings something to the table, you have to #LightItUp#EduGladiators
I would say they are essential in transforming a school. Schools take on the persona of their leaders. If the Ss know the staff cares, they will achieve high expectations. It isn’t just what the staff knows, it is how they behave that buys the capital. #EduGladiators
A1: Our school has an arts theme. From Pre-K, Ss engage in learning experiences that involve every art form. Ss leave our school in 5th grade with an appreciation for the arts that other Ss do not have. #edugladiators

A2. We have to help teachers by modeling empathy for families and take approach to learn about their challenges and how we can support them. Home visits are a great way to learn more about families. #edugladiators
A2) as a world explorer teacher these “funds” are my greatest teaching resource. Before her start learning about other cultures and languages, we share our family culture on @padlet then compare to what we learn from our global partners #EduGladiators
A1 I think it is important to model character for our students. Sometimes we assume that sts would understand our expectations right away but we need to keep in mind that they come from different cultural backgrounds. It is so necessary to reach common ground #EDUgladiators
Students think the number of AP classes taken elevates status (+ some adults think AP enrollment elevates the status of our school), but until these classes encourage meaningful participation of all students, it's not the measure. Inclusion should elevate status. #EduGladiators

A2) This is where building relationships with young adults, their families & support teachers is critical. Work every day to make sure everyone in the room has an empathy listening filter with a genuine desire to learn more setting. We are works in progress. #EduGladiators
A2 incorporating families into the classroom! Listening to their stories, including and inviting their expertise! Celebrating their knowledge and fund! #EduGladiators
It’s critical to have diverse staff supporting students. That support isn’t limited to just academics, but navigating social constructs of dominant culture. #EduGladiators

A2. A simple definition of cultural capital (CC) is that it is a collection of knowledge, skills, education, and mannerisms that people acquire from their family’s attitudes, social standing and educational background (Bourdieu, 1991, pg. 14). #edugladiators
How many people are looking at it as a hurdle to overcome or transform???? Valueing the knowledge, experiences, expertise and flatirons has absolutely nothing to do with making kids whole! #EDUgladiators

A2: Sometimes it's matter of shifting perspectives. Not every family has ill intentions. Sometimes it's just a lang... or cultural barrier. Once we look at it differently, we can see that. Have community nights at school often to bring families can help that shift. #EduGladiators
A2: We need to form strong relationships w/ families. With student schedules I include a paper called "In a Million Words or Less" I ask parents to tell me anything (with guiding questions) and in any form they choose. It helps start the connection with families. #EduGladiators

A2)Everyone’s life experience is different. We have to share that with each other. Everyone brings something different to the table. Encourage Ts to highlight those experiences in the classroom. They are fmgreat teaching moments and tools. #EDUgladiators
Why do we as educators see being bilingual as a detriment as opposed to empowering? If I know one language and someone else knows two, they have more power than me because they have greater capacity to communicate across cultures #Edugladiators
A1 This is huge! It’s difficult to get your point across when you are searching for the right words to say, practicing accountable talk can facilitate conversations in the long run. Plus, it allows for equity in thought representation. #EduGladiators
A1) Accountable talk/speech, how to respond to someone when theh disagree with you and have a conversation to enhance learning not to create division. #EduGladiators

A2: We can make sure that every student can learn from us and not just a select few. We have so much that we can give to them through when we are able to connect and allow their culture to shine. #EduGladiators
A2: I think it’s building connections with those students and families so you can access the funds. We need to cultivate trust. Getting to know your students is #1! #EduGladiators
Good Morning!! A1: The top priority at my school is ensuring that it is a safe place for staff and students. My goal is to create and cultivate a culture where everyone is free to be whomever they are. #EduGladiators
A2. Cultural capital & associated concepts such as soft skills & metacognitive skills have informed the way I approach my Ss, & they have made me realise the need to be more explicit about teaching certain unspoken classroom rules, attitudes & behaviors. #edugladiators
A2 In my experience, this fund can sometimes be a debt (as well an asset). I'm reminded of another teacher's advice to student in trauma-infused circumstances: "Be bigger than your story." Knowing those stories means asking Q's from place of trust, vulnerability. #edugladiators
A1 This is true! The caveat is ensuring that the culture and climate is in fact inclusive. There is a big difference between diversity and inclusion. #EduGladiators
A1: creating a culture and climate where we value diversity, trust, kindness in everyone! Everyone brings something to the table, you have to #LightItUp#EduGladiators
By getting to know our students “beyond the basics.” Do we know the hopes, dreams, interests, feelings, fears, obstacles, hurdles and challenges that our students carry with them? Are we having honest two-way interactions that provide feedback and next steps? #EduGladiators
A2 How many people are looking at it as a hurdle to overcome or transform???? Valuing the knowledge, experiences, expertise and traditions has absolutely nothing to do with making kids whole! #EDUgladiators
A3 This exact issue is coming to forefront in my district. We need to meet w/individual Ss more. Age alone dies not mean knowledge, but it is the implication. #EduGladiators
What if we had being bilingual as a preferred qualification for our teacher hires? What might that do to transform our schools? #edugladiators#whatimreflectingon

And they may differ from the cultural capital I bring to the classroom. How can we find common ground to avoid misunderstandings that may lead to referrals? By building relationships, listen to students voices, modeling character #EDUgladiators Love this!
A3 #EDUgladiators Sometimes we ask families to play a game without explaining the rules. We must invest time in ensuring everyone understands how to be successful in school.
A3. I take the time to meet with each new family and student and explain our schools purpose. Relationships + Rigor + Relevance = excellence. After 4 weeks I try to check in w/ student to see how they are doing. #edugladiators
A3: Address the elephant in the room. Compliance is what some Ts equate w/ S success. That S did everything I asked exactly as I asked them to do it. Clones-not critical thinking problem solvers. #EduGladiators
A3 We actually share and celebrate different cultural holidays/celebrations in assemblies, special performances and Morning Announcements 🌍 #edugladiators
A2: Everyone has to have a seat at the table. Families are so important in the work, and we have to build positive relationships with them!
#EduGladiators
For me, the invisible curriculum is around the concept of “professionalism” and how that centers certain cultural norms over others. I make it visible by discussing it with staff #edugladiators

Compliance and clones are what some teachers aim for because it's easy. Once you empower students they are hard to contain because then they know they can change the system. #EduGladiators
This is hard and not well executed by the majority because a lot of T, S, and Admin convos require hard, emotional topics with good but resistant people.
Too many conversations are avoided or ignored for fear of how it would make someone feel. Damages culture. #edugladiators
A3: When in convos w/staff that are negative, shift convo. Learn how to point them in another direction to see an issue from that side. Not saying anything can imply agreement. W/Ss, do same & also help build trust so that when they do speak, their voice is heard. #EduGladiators
A2: wow great question! Getting our community, stakeholders involved and engaged as a whole can be frustrating the older our students get! Utilizing social media platforms, showcasing..meeting them where they are would be my #startingpoint#EduGladiators#LetsDoThis

A3) Having young adults know that I love learning & they are my partners in that quest. We can ask difficult questions & call each other out. Generalizing outside of our room is our goal. #EduGladiators
A3: Celebrate culture and diversity everyday. No matter great or small, a gesture of interest and value placed on culture can go a long way in a child’s life. #EduGladiators
A3 I 👀 this inequity at during gifted identification! Ts may not understand cultural differences and overlook highly intelligent Ss. There is also an issue w/ application process! I work hard to meet all families to find ways to help make the process accessible #EduGladiators
Right? Yet, we tend to minimize and dehumanize those who are bilingual. I think it’s because we are afraid to acknowledge our position of less power #edugladiators
A3: Wouldn’t it be wonderful to have a group of student ambassadors who were assigned groups of new students to help acclimate them to the school? #EduGladiators What do you think?🥰🥰🥰
A2: That’s a tough question. First of all, we have to develop a culture that showcases speaking another language as a strength. I’ve enjoyed PD where we discuss how languages shape our worldview. After learning Portuguese, I know I look at things very differently. #EduGladiators
A3: Everyone is recognized and no one is left to feel invisible or less important. I make sure I speak to everyone I see. The Ss make sure they lay eyes on me everyday. #EduGladiators
And sometimes I might agree with points a T makes but not how they went about it. Being right doesn't give us the right to be mean. Just had this happen at school. Always be respectful and don't assume negative intentions. #EduGladiators

A4. We need to make relationships with students and families and then provide platform to share their stories with staff and school community so we can become more inclusive and supportive for all. #edugladiators
A4: i think about the recruitment, hiring, training, and retention of staff. This has to be formative in that process. It’s got to start there. We have to lead. #edugladiators

Yes! This is hard and often not well executed. In order to make these moments meaningful, we must remove the “personal” part. Delivery is very important to that end but we must look at how we can improve the experience for everyone within our school community. #EduGladiators
A4 I show my kiddos that they matter and not just with stickers on papers but by showing up to their games & performances and making sure they hear me cheer them on. That has made all the difference in connecting with Ss and their families. #EduGladiators
Difficult Q b/c we don't see what we don't see. We need to continually ask: who is being served by this lesson/activity/policy? Who is being overlooked? Who haven't we heard from? We need to question ourselves and each other and hold one another accountable. #EduGladiators
So true! My first year teaching, I was asked to recommend Ss for the GATE program. I was questioned for suggesting non-English proficient Ss even though the teacher was bilingual! #EduGladiators
A4: Not waiting for holidays to celebrate culture. Embedding culturally relevant content as a daily practice to extend beyond recognition of culture. #EduGladiators
Some schools do that! I think it's great if you have Ss who will do that. We have unofficial ones, but we're by a military base, so we get an influx of new Ss regularly. #EduGladiators
A2: I didn’t realize this, but my gestures, tone, and even personality changes to a certain degree as I speak Portuguese. A friend who has seen me speak in English and Portuguese told me this. I’ve been researching why this happens ever since. #EduGladiators
A2. Ts need to see Ss’ home language & cultural norms are not treated as shortfalls, but recognised as qualities to effectively connect with & reach them. A commitment to creative & collaborative actions that are purposeful & well-intentioned—a bridge for T&L. #EduGladiators
A3: We need to be developing problem solvers and critical thinkers. The culture needs to be one that allows for failing, but what you do with that failure is what matters the most. #EduGladiators
A4: Everyday we have a Breakfast Roundtable discussion with Ss. This sets the tone for the day and we air out whatever we need to address or clear up. #EduGladiators
I’m chewing on that. I think we need to “lean in” to the personal here instead of move away from. We are talking about our humanity. That’s very personal. It’s not clinical. #edugladiators
In reply to
@PaulONeill1972, @TBrianKight, @MrsNiemiec
A4 I’ll commit to incorporating exploration of student culture both for their own understanding and for awareness and understanding of others! Read the stories, allow Ss and Ts to tell their stories, bring in parents and community to share experiences and expertise #Edugladiators
A3: Absolutely dismantle!! Invisible curriculum ignores cultural differences - everyone does this; everyone knows about that; everyone grows up the same way. My job is to acknowledge differences & help Ss navigate a path to success. #EduGladiators

A4: By making every moment count. We may not get it right every time but how we do business is important. We may not always agree on the steps needed to get there but we must identify how we want to do business with every interaction. #EduGladiators

That is awesome! I am bilingual too, but sometimes, at the adult level, it is not seen as a plus depending on the dominant culture space you have to navigate. #EDUgladiators
A4: We encouraged our families to interview family members around Thanksgiving and didn't get much response. I'm going to reach back out to them to show them we really want to hear their stories! #edugladiators
A4: Celebrate student voice and choice. When we allow students the means to express who they are, where they come from, and their opinions we are opening the world to honoring and empowering kids. #EduGladiators

Q4: Cultural diversity in literature is a good place to start! Are school libraries rich in diverse literature? Do classroom libraries have books that mirror the children in the classrooms? Are students connecting to what they are reading? #EduGladiators
A4: We need to teach from the stance of a learner. Explain your perspective to us. In this culture this looks like x. Can anyone share with us what x looks like within a different culture? And discuss until understanding is reached. #EduGladiators

Is your tone ect changing when you speak Portuguese...or is that your preferred state and your tone ect has adjusted when you speak English because you’ve acclimated to expectations/mannerisms of dominant English speaking culture. I wonder. #EduGladiators
Hoping that the #EDUgladiators group can join #champforkids family this Tuesday 8est as @PrincipalRLA takes us into a great discussion on Culturally Responsive Teaching! Would love your perspectives! 🥊🥊
A2: We all share something about our families. Everyone was asked to share their favorite toy as a child or their favorite holiday meal. We all enjoyed learning how much we were alike. We also discuss how we prepare the same foods but in different ways. #EduGladiators
Translanguaging theories have plenty to say about this. Bi- & multi-lingual students have asset funds from which they can withdraw, when we encourage them, in service of their learning. https://t.co/HY16oAVyj2… #edugladiators
A4: I’m currently participating in an online training facilitated by ICMEE and WIDA on how to support our bilingual Ss in the classroom. I’m hoping to bring some of this knowledge to our Ts. So much to understand! ❤️❤️❤️#edugladiators
I’m reflecting on the desire to separate ourselves from “we.” I understand on one sense, as an individual, however we are also a part of a larger education community that we can’t distance ourselves from #edugladiators
A4) Continuing to build a culture where young adults are not afraid to teach me. Value of uniqueness & richness of their stories gives them power. #EduGladiators
A3 Invisible curriculum is the most frustrating thing EVER! Culturally responsive teaching is the way by which to mitigate inequities. It takes diligence and much more than a notation on a lesson plan to make marginalized students feel like they can and belong. #EduGladiators
A4: By bringing each topic back to personal connections for students and letting students discover, explore and share their own context in relation to the concepts. #edugladiators

The hidden curriculum is a reason for the achievement gap: when certain funds of knowledge aren't valued, students possessing them are labeled + their identities in schools + the education they receive are impacted. Assimilation or exclusion become binary choices. #EduGladiators

Ss were doctors at Bel-Aire Hospital and “operated” on fractions. They were so excited and engaged! This was so much fun to plan and create for my kids! I will have to make another one soon! @aprilmnorris@johnccarver@TCSPublic#belairebees#TCSPublic
Students examine a local soil sample to see what is in it. They found worms, plant materials, and rocks. Then they compared the local soil sample to potting soil by texture, color, and smell. #belairebees @TCSPublic @aprilmnorris
Yes! Inequitable access to academic opp to expose Ss to critical thinking/prob solving, inequity in understanding gifted characteristics and culture, inequity in access to application process... we have a long way to go! Love the work of Dr Yvette Jackson #EDUgladiators
I have brought my cultural mannerism when I speak in English and I think it has caused misunderstandings! One time when I was speaking in the hallway, I was using my hands, and someone came, hold my hands and move them to my back. I was very confused. #EDUgladiators
A3: #CodeSwitching Making your expectations, routines, procedures, values #Seen! Unseen expectations and assumptions have the potential to create a marginalized climate and disproportionately within our student population. #EduGladiators
Right! So being kind is what's right. :) We can disagree but be kind. We can differ and be professional. Ultimately we do what we're told, but we do so professionally. There are ways to get things done that don't involve being mean (for me, anyway). #EduGladiators

Yes! Student choice is a key to building a culturally responsive class: this is how we bring funds of knowledge front + center + make the learning relevant to students. They can bring what they value, know + love to learning rather than having to hide it in school. #EduGladiators

I have to say that sometimes code switching is very exhausting. Undermines your identity but most of the time it has to be done. It is hard for adults, I cannot imagine how it is for our kids. #EduGladiators
I think we need to be *actively* recruiting students that schools + systems have pushed to the periphery into these academic opportunities while making those spaces safe + inclusive for those we're recruiting. Dismantling these inequities in within our power! #EduGladiators
Professional pushback leads to more reflection and more growth. Definitely need to have pain and discomfort along the way instead of a bunch of "yes" people. I like "why" or "why not" people. :) #StartWithWhy#EduGladiators

It's also possible that code switching may devalue the funds of knowledge + identities of the speaker, reconstituting systems of oppression. I think we should encourage code-meshing as a less exhausting + more inclusive option that moves beyond "the standard." #EduGladiators

By valuing #diversity and #preserving the #cultural#dignity of the community, a culturally responsive environment will ensue, and subsequent cultural proficiency will promote an instructionally-powerful #learning climate with academically achieving and #engaged#students.
My tone changes when I speak Portuguese, but it is totally unconscious. I speak slower and more deliberate. In English, I speak faster and more animated. In Portuguese, I’m calmer. #EduGladiators gladiators
Yep! Those follow my "why" or "why not" questions. Tell me it can't be done, and watch me do it. (or collapse from effort of trying). :) #PLN is very helpful in those scenarios! #EduGladiators

The longer I stay in Brazil, the more expressive I become. I hug more. If you aren’t this way, it hurts ppl’s feelings. Didn’t notice until I went back to visit my friends in the States. They told me, “Dude, you are really touchy geeky?” Felt very embarrassed. #EduGladiators
