#worldgeochat is a weekly chat focused on teaching geography and global studies. Chats vary between geography specific topics as well as general teaching and education topics. ALL are welcome in worldgeochat!
i will be tweeting a bunch in this next hour because i’ll be moderating #worldgeochat tonight! if you’re an educator jump on in within these next few minutes to learn more about #gamification
hello everyone! i’m chris conrad. i’m a teacher in the @BethlehemAreaSD and am eager to share my experiences and learn from others about #gamification! remember, make sure to use the Q# A# format when answering! #worldgeochat
Wahooooo! I'm so excited for tonight's #worldgeochat! Sam here from MA, 7th grade world geo teacher, and 1/5 of moderation team with @cheffernan75, @GeoSpiegs, @ecasey77 and @jmgarner2003. Favorite game? Loved Crash Bandicoot for Playstation!
Kelly from Lake Zurich HS, Lake Zurich, IL. I teach AP Human and US History. I don’t really use any gamification as part of my teaching practice, so I’m excited to hear about new ideas! #worldgeochat
Hey everybody! Douglas Robertson from AL. Excited to hear about everybody's gamification ideas. I've love playing Civilization since way back when. #worldgeochat
Hi everyone! Ed, 7th grade geography teacher in the suburbs of Chicago. I'm looking for that nudge to embed more aspects of gamification into my class #worldgeochat
Hi! I'm Anna Mills, 6th Grade World Geography teacher in West Bridgewater, MA. My favorite game as a child was hide and seek (for real game). My favorite video game was Legend of Zelda (NES). #worldgeochat
hello everyone! i’m chris conrad. i’m a teacher in the @BethlehemAreaSD and am eager to share my experiences and learn from others about #gamification! remember, make sure to use the Q# A# format when answering! #worldgeochat
Hi, #worldgeochat ! Was super bummed I missed #sschat last night, so glad I could make this one! I'm Melissa, Atchison, KS. I teach 6-8 Soc Studies. I spent many hrs playing NHL '95 & '98 w my bros (oh, and Street Fighter II.. hahaha).
A1: the use of game features w/in the classroom (but is often used by businesses too ... I'm a sucker for the stars in the Starbucks app!)
#worldgeochat
It's been pretty crazy! Team USA tour was in town for Super Bowl, drove to see on a whim, ended up being a great idea as my Olympic Challenge league for social studies teachers now has some cool, extra prizes! #worldgeochat
A1: Applying game-play to school to improve real-life habits. #worldgeochat
i.e. It's easier to die and press restart in a game than in real life. #failfast
i.e. It's easier to manage a fantasy team than try to influence your favorite one in real life. #fantasy
A1. I feel like I'm not even qualified to answer. haha. I see it as a layer of engagement placed over regular management, curriculum using game mechanics from common games students know and love. Haven't done yet, but I LOVE THE ENGAGEMENT FACTOR! #worldgeochat
A1: Gamification to me is adding game elements, such as collaboration opportunities and choice elements as well as things like XP, leveling up, and challenges #worldgeochat
😂 well...this is more for teachers HOWEVER there are a couple questions that you could answer from a student's perspective. just add #worldgeochat to the end of your response! and you can follow along that way!
A1: I define #gamification as turning anything school related into a game. Like make latitude and longitude into Battleship. I have a checkerboard floor, and I have got to find a way to play wizards chess or live checkers in class. #worldgeochat
A1: Overlaying game mechanics on the curriculum you teach. Using the parts of games that make us keep playing to encourage Ss to keep trying. #worldgeochat
A1: using any elements from gaming (exploration, competition, creativity, just plain fun) that engage students and encourage them to become self-driven learners #worldgeochat
A1: I define #gamification as turning anything school related into a game. Like make latitude and longitude into Battleship. I have a checkerboard floor, and I have got to find a way to play wizards chess or live checkers in class. #worldgeochat
A1: Gamified elements also include things like die, relay races, etc. Definitely incorporating challenge and competition. As @MrHistory123, it's the most engaging! We all learn from friendly competition #worldgeochat
A1-It is a method of introducing content, establishing enduring understandings, or reinforcing important information to students. It increases engagement both through competition and extrinsic/intrinsic motivation. #worldgeochat
A2: Students benefit through decision-making, cooperation, learning to listen to one another, and a heightened sense of engagement. Gamification breaks the monotony of traditional classrooms #worldgeochat
A2: SUSTAINED. ENGAGEMENT. Especially with the borderline kids. No worksheet on Earth could EVER compare to a compelling, competitive game. #worldgeochat
I have foam swords from the dollar store so we can become Knights, but I have to work on the name tags (with the moves for each player on the back) and "time on learning" reason for playing wizards chess. It will happen, even if it is an end of year activity. #worldgeochat
A2 I think allowing students to gamify something is an excellent creative outlet. Strategy, critical thinking, planning ahead, all necessary skills. #worldgeochat
A2 Takes all the pressure out of taking risks, Competition naturally amps up performance, gives kids measurable goals and targets to meet, encourages teamwork... and most importantly, school should be fun right? #worldgeochat
A2
Not being someone who has gamified, I'd imagine that just like people enjoy winning a game or accomplishing something new, Ss would feel the same way. But, I've never tried...
#worldgeochat
A1 Something as simple as adding a buzzer makes a task more engaging. Ss know they have to answer a question, but it's so much more exciting to buzz in. #worldgeochat
A1: as a student, gamification helps break away from the typical classroom setting, engage the students, and create a competitive environment for us to use the material we have covered in a fun way rather than just studying for the test #worldgeochat
A2: In gamification, Ss are rewarded for consistently redoing tasks to improve performance and unlock items & abilities. This drive to improve their status in the game or be able to do special things keeps them constantly reflecting & trying again. #worldgeochat
My classes compete with each other DAILY. I have a running tally on the board for how well they do with our map warm up. Classes see each other's score and yearn to be the best! #worldgeochat
I have blow up dice which for some reason the students love. We have played some number games with them and I hope when it gets warmer the students can create a big board game on the school field #worldgeochat
A1: Overlaying game mechanics on the curriculum you teach. Using the parts of games that make us keep playing to encourage Ss to keep trying. #worldgeochat
A2: gaming encourages trial by error (do-overs) and deemphasizes grades and failing. Students are more comfortable being creative risk-takers #worldgeochat
A2: Students benefit from a gamified model because in some cases they don't realize they are learning so much or practicing skills they need to learn. It makes learning fun, and increases retention of concepts because they are doing something meaningful to them #worldgeochat
No prob! And I told them that if they all score perfectly twice in one week, I'll wear a kilt to school on Friday! 😂 It ain't easy bein' breezy! #worldgeochat
Q2 You can learn as you go. The idea of a game is to play. you can try different combos until you get it right. Figuring it out as you go trying to figure out why one way works but not another. #worldgeochat
i LOVE the idea of crafting a game based system with an aligned standards based curriculum. @classcraftgame is a perfect way to match standards with student choice! #worldgeochat
A2. The main draw for me is engagement and motivation. There are so many opportunities to engage students on different levels. Teamwork and cooperation are huge bonuses! #worldgeochat
A2-It helps break up the somewhat predictability of he middle school social pecking order! I love it when a student the is often overlooked or discounted by their peers wins a round in my classroom. #underdog#worldgeochat
A3: The first step, I believe, is starting small, like adding dice to activities. Break a 4 question worksheet and create a relay race. Ask yourself, how can I add a little energetic "chaos" to this lesson? #worldgeochat
focus on something (an action or skill) that you would like to see improve in class, and then find a way to reinforce it (w/ points or increasing levels) #worldgeochat
A2: Seems like there are only two ways to train for lifelong competitions at school: testing or gamifying...
I feel like the data shows testing doesn't work in the U.S.
Let's play! #gameon#worldgeochat
A3a I would tell them to start with game based learning mixing it in here and there before gameifying the entire class. It’s not for everyone, try it in small doses to see if it’s right for you #worldgeochat
I'm not the expert! I've done a ton of lurking on #xplap and all of @mrmatera's work. My understanding is GBL is introducing games on a microcosm level (e.g. review games) and #gamification is overlay of game mechanics in classroom environment. #worldgeochat
A3A: Start small - just one lesson and build from there. Make sure it is something you are passionate about. Your passion will be infectious. #worldgeochat
A3: Realize that you don't have to know it all up front. Plan as best you can, but let your students teach you too. The more input they have in the game, the more invested they are likely to be. #worldgeochat
I looked into classcraft for a behaviors reward system. I have a manual class competition--they earn points for staying on task, helping team members, etc. and lose points for not cleaning up around desks, etc.#worldgeochat
A3A: Start with what you want them to learn (test, whatevs) and work backwards. Think of a game with only a few teams and a cool reward for victory. AMP UP THE ACTION! #worldgeochat
A3a: personally, start small. include some games such as @kahoot and then slowly work towards a point based system. i use @playfanschool as the basis of mine! #worldgeochat
Ask for feedback from the students as well. What worked, what didn't. What do they wish they had more control over? What elements do they like about games? #worldgeochat
The points they earn helps them earn a playing card for a end-of-the-week game. One prob I have is trying to get Ss to focus on gaining points rather than trying to get other groups to lose points. #worldgeochat
I tried that last year, and just couldn't keep up. I'm trying it this year with @classcraftgame and find it a little overwhelming as well. Next year (or third term if I feel up to it), I'm gonna be more strict on rewarding and taking away #worldgeochat
A3A: The first step is to think about what types of games you enjoy. One of my colleagues my first year told me if you want to make History fun, that's where to start. I made a review game for China called the Silk Road Game from Candy Land & Snakes and ladders. #worldgeochat
I LOVE @classcraftgame We are using the quest feature to incorporate online learning during reading and math in my 4th grade class. We are addicted! #worldgeochat
I did! But I need to figure out how to make it NOT a review game and more of a learning tool. That's my challenge for the next month or two #worldgeochat
A3: Just start!
This was the first iteration of Fantasy Geopolitics:
https://t.co/5VHdd5974q
Think about the thing that frustrates you more than anything else and how you can design a game around it. #worldgeochat
I invented a game called Go For It that my Ss are completely addicted to. Great for review. Highly competitive and action packed. They study for the GAME, not the test. Fine with me! #worldgeochat
A3a gotta keep your ears open for new ideas to mix in. I got my “bucket of temptation” idea from watching @BigBrother__USA and they love it #worldgeochat
A3a) I like to bring in some things that are kinda like reality TV games. Like Shark Tank and Masterchef. Things they’ve been exposed to but with a twist. #worldgeochat
gamification is using programs like Class Dojo to reinforce behaviors and skills
game-based learning is focused on standards & activities that support them (set up like a quest or game)
#worldgeochat
My Ss keep me honest--they remind me of the points that I promised them or when they need to play Dots & Boxes--that's the end-of-the-wk game. Simple but they love it! But I agree, keeping up pts is one of the last things on my mind in a class period. #worldgeochat
i think the idea of a amazing race challenge can be perfectly adapted into a classroom gamification model! i'd be happy to help! challenges could a variety of learning goals. #worldgeochat
What if you did it each leg of the race before the unit began? Give them a little bit of background knowledge and have the tasks for each leg begin to build their knowledge of what’s to come!! #worldgeochat
A3B: I have gamified my whole course (though it needs big tweaks), but I use Kahoot! to review basic vocab & concepts on Thursdays. Boss Battles for review too! #worldgeochat
A3PA-Talk to your peers, particularly about what is user friendly for newbies in the gasification process, use your #PLN to ask for suggestions, and your friendly neighborhood instructional tech is always full of good ideas and often willing to help you get started! #worldgeochat
This is a great idea! Thank you! I'm now thinking I can introduce the 5 factors of settlement and economics and give students each a challenge #worldgeochat
A3b it might come back to the gameification vs game based learning decision. I think you can find stand alone games for different uses here and there throughout the year before going to full gameification #worldgeochat
A1 When I think of gamification I think of taking elements typically used w/ games (i.e. scoring points, competition) & using it w/ "traditional" school material #worldgeochat
A3B: My daily warmup and my unit test reviews are gamified. It's daily, but subtle. Doesn't dominate the rest of the lesson, or more importantly, the culture of the room. #worldgeochat
I use Fantasy Geopolitics throughout the year to gamify our study of current events! Students drafted for the Olympics challenge in class today! Students were so excited for this draft! #worldgeochat#fanofschool@playfanschool
i spent a good chunk of time in the summer working on mine. i set up head to head matchups and use @playfanschool as my scoring base model. however, even in a head to head you wouldn't need a outside scoring system. see below! #worldgeochathttps://t.co/9lhpIc2kpn
A2 If teacher sets it up well, critical thinking skills, collaboration skills, the opportunity to learn from mistakes in a non-threatening environment #worldgeochat
#worldgeochat this box has just recently come into my possession. Breakout room style. I am excited once I figure something out to do...anyone try this yet?
A3b) Routinely infuse games with short anticipatory challenges. ex) geography challenges and true/false sorts. A student favorite is a mystery bag: place 5-7 objects in a bag have them work in groups to guess the details of next topic.
#worldgeochat
I did that a couple of times ... learned to let the security guards know ahead of time (they were freaking out w/ Ss running all over the place - oops!)
#worldgeochat
In reply to
@GeoPenny, @mrconrad_lhs, @SamMandeville
Q3PB-I always use games the day before a big test! They have had the time leading up to the assessment to familiarize themselves with the material and they always have their study guide, but between the time in class and games I post on GClassroom, it boosts scores. #worldgeochat
YES. i use this for map quizzes. students have an UNLIMITED amount of attempts to practice and get a 100% on a map quiz for extra points for their classroom ranking! #worldgeochat
A3B: I play games to teach. For example, the first Silk Road Game I played was a teaching tool. The S's read the chapter, and made the questions while I drew the game board on the Board. It worked- they learned a lot, and then we summarized notes to end. #worldgeochat
A3B: As a Spanish teacher, I incorporated games quite a bit! Review games were a must (cross between family feud, tic tac dough). Guess it’s called Kahoot today! #worldgeochat
A3b obviously @playfanschool and the #Olympic challenge should be on everyone’s to do list for bringing game based learning to their class THIS WEEK #worldgeochat
For those wanting to get ahead of the curve, VR is coming fast. To begin thinking about its promises and dangers, give a listen to this interview with a Stanford researcher on the cutting edge. https://t.co/eLm3ZVVQEi#worldgeochat
A3b I think like anything students need a variety of learning materials. Games are one tool, that can used throughout the learning process. Games can be used to see what students red to learn as well as see what they have learned #worldgeochat
that's awesome! i do very similar tasks. currently my ap cogo class created nation-states on @nationstatesnet and are using their terms to understand how their actions affect their countries! #worldgeochat
"Created Tourbuilder showing 5 places in Canada."
"Created Documentary showing learning about [topic]."
"Learned map of Central America."
I haven't used, but I like the idea. haha. #worldgeochat
A3B Can do it for specific topics & come back to that topic on specific days (i.e. Friday) over the term. For example, turning Fantasy Sports games into social studies topics. Fantasy Geopolitics, Fantasy Congress, etc. #worldgeochat
A4 - I think that want to compete stems directly from the want to learn. Create a culture of learning and students will naturally want to compete. #worldgeochat
A4: We check the leaderboard each week to celebrate items being earned & leveling up. I also use it to announce available side quests. Ss who are behind are sometimes offered hidden quests to help them along. #worldgeochat
Still experimenting with badges with Ss. We have been using them with Ts for learning Schoology skills. Many teachers love them and want to earn more! #worldgeochat
In reply to
@MrGuglielmi, @cheffernan75, @mr_middle_2, @LFU_MissCox
Would love to integrate VR. Ran into roadblock of not having iphones/smart phones. Want to slowly start collecting old phones so that I could at least have a class set #worldgeochat
A4: Ss are in teams that are competing to earn extra privileges throughout the course (extra time, music selection in class, use of notes on quizzes, etc...)
#worldgeochat
I've heard people using content/product based badges. Those are a few I could think of. You can personalize as needed, or perhaps students could even suggest. #worldgeochat
A3B #worldgeochat
I've gamified my independent work portions of reading and math so that my instruction is blended. We do a few team building type activities outside of that time though.
@playfanschool is a great start for a point based system. gets students involved in current events. THEN you can add and/or modify scores within the platform. i have opportunities for extra points AND classroom management points. #worldgeochat
In reply to
@waddellsworld, @mr_middle_2, @playfanschool, @playfanschool
A4: Titles. ALL TIME GREAT. Have their name forever immortalized in the room. Instagram posts touting their victory to their peers and Ss who came before them. Who doesn't want to be honored? #worldgeochat
A4: BADGES and/or random activities that will count towards an overall goal. in my course @playfanschool points start the process but i add scores based on management, extra activities, curricular goals, etc #worldgeochat
A4 the competitive drive we have as students to beat one another in these games mixed with different prices and games throughout the year will keep the competitive atmosphere. Don’t play the same game too often but also don’t be afraid to reuse a well received game #worldgeochat
A4: Through @classcraftgame, these are their term teams. When they get into their term teams, they know something is going down with games and challenges. In my class, atm, it's a sense of suspense when we add gamified elements #worldgeochat
A4 badges and promotion ceremonies for raising individual rank, earning spendable achievement points they can use to buy items, but also class vs class competition with a coveted spot on the Honish wall of immortality #worldgeochat
Yes! I added lots of relevance to old assignments by adding them on to @playfanschool games.
Also stopped using words like "homework" and started using language like "White House Brief" #worldgeochat
In reply to
@mrconrad_lhs, @waddellsworld, @mr_middle_2, @playfanschool, @playfanschool
A4: I'm trying to work in an overarching plot that gives a sense of development. Also important to have a way for students to catch up in the leaderboards so they don't feel lost. #worldgeochat
@Jim_dEntremont and I just set ours up for a Geography Challenge Question of the Week. Have only had two challenges so far, so it's not wicked exciting just yet. #worldgeochat
In reply to
@Coach_Stephans, @mrmatera, @Jim_dEntremont
VR (Virtual Reality) uses headsets, not phones; so you are probably thinking of AR (Augmented Reality) which works well on newer Apple phones and iPad Pros - not sure about Android devices. Great iOS AR app is https://t.co/8FBSyH0uTV#worldgeochat
A4: I use games all the time: I change it up from simulations, to geo challenges for HW passes or bonus points, relay races. I also have awesome points: when students do a good job they get points. If they earn 20 points, they get 10 minutes game time for fun. #worldgeochat
I use old trophies to reward class presentations -- best content, most entertaining, etc. Really gets the competition going to do quality work. #worldgeochat
certainly right! i think the misconception of gamification gets lost on ONE game (i.e. Kahoot). however, working in other ways for students to compete and share their knowledge is KEY! #worldgeochat
In 3+ years of doing #worldgeochat, this is the first time that I've ever just stopped to see all the amazing ideas this PLN produces. I'm so out of my element, but I'm blown away and inspired to try so many things tomorrow!
I went to a workshop where we used iPhones and Google Cardboard. We then used Google Maps and Streets to get the feeling that we were walking around. I think that was VR. #worldgeochat
A4: #worldgeochat
I have created game videos to intro a new level and created "secret" levels to unlock based on mastery of content. They really like "secret" levels!
A4 Consistency is impt. For my behavior reward system don't give points regularly Ss forget what I'm looking for. I also need to remember to follow through on rewards, too, or else they thing their hard work is for nothing. #worldgeochat
I did one earlier this year when we were covering different stats that you would find on CIA World Factbook. My library director helped create it. There are digital versions too now that you can create without the box. I need to try them out too #worldgeochat
A5: @mrmatera's "Explore Like a Pirate" is a MUST for gamified elements. He provides ways to start small as well as go big, by incorporating themes, guilds, etc #worldgeochat
Tons of stuff. For example, when a kid misses just one, or none, on a test, I let them sign "the HULK." It's a big green podium. Over the years it's been COVERED. The current "INCREDIBLE HULK" signed it 8 times. Many try, few succeed... ;) #worldgeochat
A5 from the students’ perspective, we like seeing games and simulations that the teacher pulled from their imagination (or another teachers imagination, we don’t judge) and are well thought up, not always the same games and resources (i.e., Kahoot! and quizlet live) #worldgeochat
A5: #XPLAP PLN and Explore Like A Pirate book & spreadsheet. My passions for @NatlParkService & Indiana Jones have provided my biggest inspirations for Theme & setting. #worldgeochat
this is especially true in a blended classroom where you can individual folders or assignments for students. my district currently uses @Schoology and it works GREAT! #worldgeochat
In reply to
@drobhistory, @FANgeopolitics, @waddellsworld, @mr_middle_2, @playfanschool, @Schoology
A5 hyperdocs templates have allowed me to sort of lay out all the possible missions/opportunities for points they can pursue, @TechedUpTeacher has a guide that is great for #noobs#worldgeochat
Breakouts I get! I made one for my daughter's birthday party a few weeks ago - some of it was a little silly, but to get kids up, excited, & moving, it's a great activity! #worldgeochat
Google Expeditions is awesome! I loved that they keep adding new expeditions all the time. I think we are just at the early stages of AR and VR. I can't wait to see this technology grow. #worldgeochat
A5 game board templates (both big and small), foam dice, blank cards, spinner, https://t.co/bacwMY9rLw has fun things like picking names and races. #worldgeochat
A5: the BEST resources start with @kahoot, @quizlet, or @quizizz and adding a point based system over top of them. possibly head to head OR a total point board. #worldgeochat
Hyperdocs are such a dynamic platform. @le_reitz created a fantastic one for the issue of refugees that she was kind enough to share. It worked great! #worldgeochat
In reply to
@JohnHonish, @TechedUpTeacher, @le_reitz
A5 Mentioned this a few tweets ago, but I love @quizlet for teaching vocabulary. They have a format called QuizletLive where you can have students team up to define teams, find places on a map, etc. It's a great, collaborative way to learn! #worldgeochat
Not to mention the @NatGeoEducation Bee!!!! No finer, more prestigious geography centered game in all of academia. Proud to say @BrenhamMiddle are annual participants! #worldgeochat
A5: #worldgeochat
Hands down, the best resource I found is @classcraftgame
It takes care of the game theory side of things so that I can take care of creating content. It is so easy to use!
Call them King/Queen Atlas! And they retain their crown for YEARS to come. Take their picture and frame it above the globe, along with their favorite quote. #worldgeochat
Hey #worldgeochat so excited you are talking #gamification… I would love for you to subscribe to my https://t.co/HlHOyv1rEH channel where I talk more about this and other ideas. Today posted about adding debates in class.
A5: This is hard because most of the games are inspired by what I like to play or what my S's and my kids enjoy playing. I also got inspiration from colleagues, and of course #worldgeochat
A5: @playfanschool helps students develop better daily news habits in a world full of content and notifications, but not much understanding and meaning. #worldgeochat

A6: With a possible half day tomorrow, I'm thinking I can create a relay race that would put the Sustainable Development Goals to work! My students LOVE the relays #worldgeochat
Thanks #worldgeochat!! Have to go help w/ dinner. Going to have to review the archives. Between driving earlier & off & on Internet issues when got home I think I missed a lot :(
A6 make learning a game as much as I can! I know the first thing I need to do tomorrow is get out my blow up globe. I put it away and then forget about it but even using it to answer questions make it a game! #worldgeochat
A6 I’m amping up the wall of immortality with some of those more individualized trophies with signatures and stuff like @MrHistory123 said. Reminds me of the Stanley cup #worldgeochat
A6-I can draw a direct correlation between using games to review content and unit assessment scores... that is too powerful to ignore! I do want to increase the types of gasification I use next year to possibly introduce content. #gottagetthejobdone#worldgeochat
I totally agree! My students love the silly memes from quizziz, and Kahoot is always fun! I am using an Olympics Kahoot Friday to get my students geared up for the games. #worldgeochat
In reply to
@mrconrad_lhs, @Kahoot, @quizlet, @quizizz
A6: I will be co-teaching a lesson on the PD benefits of Twitter—maybe we can use this informative chat on gamification as an illustration. #worldgeochat
As we begin to wind down (or get amped up!), a HUGE thanks to @mrconrad_lhs for leading this invigorating chat. I'm so pumped to add more elements throughout the school year! #worldgeochat
A6: I plan on being on the lookout for the use of gamification in the classroom and to try to give feedback to the teacher regarding what I thought worked well, didn’t work as well, was fun, ways to improve to make it even better, etc. #worldgeochat

A6: Look into games that allow students to put themselves into it, e.g. creating a Quizzlet in their own words, reflect their environment, etc.. #worldgeochat
