    In reply to @MrHeadComputing
  • catherinelliott May 1 @ 3:07 PM EDT
Obviously SEND is massively wide ranging and different students will have different strength and weaknesses - anything stand out? #caschat
  • MrHeadComputing May 1 @ 3:07 PM EDT
A1 Reading is the struggle, as is verbalising their understanding. Greatest strengths tend to be out of the box thinking and approaches to problems. #caschat
    In reply to @catherinelliott

#caschat A1 Basic ICT skills often the biggest barrier/ challenge. #STEM #STEAM and #MakerEd , child led lots of collaboration works well
  • catherinelliott May 1 @ 3:09 PM EDT
Reading can become such a barrier even if their understanding of technology and programming is good. ANyone find maths skills a barrier? #caschat
  • catherinelliott May 1 @ 3:10 PM EDT
Indeed, and we will look at strategies in a bit how to help with this #caschat
    • KJSICT May 1 @ 3:07 PM EDT
Programming and logical reasoning can be tricky for some and reading, but those with AS can excel at programming! #caschat
  • KJSICT May 1 @ 3:10 PM EDT
Yes, definitely a link with maths and computing ability for most students. #caschat
    In reply to @catherinelliott
  • clcsimon - Moderator May 1 @ 3:10 PM EDT
I find some students with Autism excel in coding but struggle with analysis, testing & evaluation as too focussed on getting the code perfect! #caschat

    • TomRadge May 1 @ 3:10 PM EDT
Agree with Tim. Out of the box thinking. Also their lack of metacognition - learning to learn - ‘seeing’ the problem.
      In reply to @catherinelliott
  • AlwaysComputing May 1 @ 3:12 PM EDT
Reading an understanding the problem is huge for our send kids. We have a large proportion of autistic children as we have a DSP for autistism. I find once they understand the problems, and work out the algorithmic nature of it, they fly. #caschat
  • catherinelliott May 1 @ 3:12 PM EDT
    #CASchat
    • DebugEdu May 1 @ 3:10 PM EDT
A1 A lot of students I come across are asd, and the issue with them often is breaking down a task like the non exam assessment #caschar
      In reply to @catherinelliott
  • Mr_G_ICT May 1 @ 3:12 PM EDT
#caschat A1) it varys vastly on the needs of the student. All students struggle with problem solving but i think it's the vast quantity of the work and tying it all together.

  • catherinelliott May 1 @ 3:13 PM EDT
Q2. Which hardware/software have you found most effective for teaching computing to SEND students? (programming or other aspects) #caschat
  • Mr_G_ICT May 1 @ 3:13 PM EDT
#caschat hello all, Ben G here from the north west
  • MrHeadComputing May 1 @ 3:14 PM EDT
In a way it is a shame that scratch 3.0 ditched the ScratchJr style visual blocks for the text based ones thinking about SEND. #caschat
  • MrJKhalil May 1 @ 3:14 PM EDT
A1. Anything that is very text heavy based or one that requires a certain level of computation, so helping students to chunk the task #caschat
  • Mr_G_ICT May 1 @ 3:14 PM EDT
#caschat one of my (vast) thoughts is how i can write a computing curriculum that completely ties all the theory, programming, practical together in a neat little package. Its been a work of years, i'm getting there with KS5 programming
  • AlwaysComputing May 1 @ 3:15 PM EDT
Agree. Would be nice to have a half way house #caschat
    In reply to @MrHeadComputing
  • clcsimon - Moderator May 1 @ 3:15 PM EDT
    Question 2 is live! #caschat
    • catherinelliott May 1 @ 3:13 PM EDT
Q2. Which hardware/software have you found most effective for teaching computing to SEND students? (programming or other aspects) #caschat
  • MrJKhalil May 1 @ 3:16 PM EDT
A2. Providing comparison between scratch and then asking students to think about a text based response #caschat
  • DebugEdu May 1 @ 3:16 PM EDT
I have found @MicrosoftTeams a great tool for students to collaborate without always having to put their hand up, often SEND students are more confident asking their peers than teacher #caschat
    In reply to @catherinelliott, @MicrosoftTeams
  • KJSICT May 1 @ 3:17 PM EDT
A2; I haven't yet! I am hoping some robotics will help as the results will be more instant/visual for some Touch Develop while others in Kodu #caschat
  • AlwaysComputing May 1 @ 3:17 PM EDT
Oh yeah. I like that idea!!! @scratch, what can you do for us!!!!! #caschat
    In reply to @MrHeadComputing, @scratch
  • TomRadge May 1 @ 3:17 PM EDT
A2 I have been very successful in assessing decomposition using Lego and also tickle app link to sphero to teach block coding with a physical outcome #caschat
  • MrJKhalil May 1 @ 3:17 PM EDT
A2. Anything that yields a visual result, such as using small basic to teach key programming concepts #caschat
  • martincaddy May 1 @ 3:17 PM EDT
A2) Microbit with block editor is good for quick visual results. Gonig unplugged and drawing each stage of an algorithm #caschat
  • Mr_G_ICT May 1 @ 3:17 PM EDT
#caschat i'm a big fan of onenote. it contains learning tools to aid with dyslexia. i like the idea of the content library. all info stored in one place.
  • catherinelliott May 1 @ 3:18 PM EDT
A2 Physical Computing came up time and time again in my survey of teachers, the tangible interface and immediate sensory output #CASchat
    • TomRadge May 1 @ 3:12 PM EDT
I find that my students excel in physical computing and that they learn best when a task is a concrete experience
      In reply to @catherinelliott

    In reply to @catherinelliott
  • clcsimon - Moderator May 1 @ 3:18 PM EDT
A2. I love going unplugged but I sometimes find that some SEND students can find this too abstract! I sometimes find that printing out/laminating blocks e.g. Scratch blocks & getting Ss to act out the code helps! Also paired programming helps too! #caschat
    In reply to @catherinelliott
  • DdR333 May 1 @ 3:19 PM EDT
#caschat A2 Beebot LegoWEDO CoderPillar @Sphero @codeorg @BarefootComp resources, crazy character algorithms etc unplugged pseudocode

I used the bee bot app with an SEND boy in year 6 who really struggled to access any of the curriculum and he really excelled on it. #caschat
    In reply to @clcsimon
  • catherinelliott May 1 @ 3:20 PM EDT
This is true, you can do some quite complex stuff. I just wish you could save it somehow other than just for viewing on the iPad #caschat

    In reply to @hengehall
  • catherinelliott May 1 @ 3:22 PM EDT
There has to be an explicit link made to programming from the unplugged activity, you are right. #caschat
  • AlwaysComputing May 1 @ 3:22 PM EDT
Well, it's a plain clear font so has little to no impact on those without dyslexia, but for those who do it can make a difference. It's no harder for me to produce so why not use it! #caschat
    In reply to @catherinelliott
  • clcsimon - Moderator May 1 @ 3:23 PM EDT

Q3. Which strategies do you find most effective when teaching programming to SEND learners? #caschat
  • Mr_G_ICT May 1 @ 3:26 PM EDT
#caschat I was told by a student some years ago, comic sans won awards in its time for it's clarity and being different to anything that has gone before. I'm a massive fan of Century Gothic myself
    In reply to @DebugEdu, @AlwaysComputing
  • catherinelliott May 1 @ 3:26 PM EDT
Obviously unplugged has been mentioned a lot, and this is great for teaching abstract concepts using familiar topics and concrete objects or movements... #caschat

  • catherinelliott May 1 @ 3:27 PM EDT
I do wonder what it brings extra than just wow factor, but I do think VR has huge implications for certain students to experience something that may be difficult in real life #caschat

Definitely - this came up a lot too in the survey - breaking down complex tasks. And the language of computational thinking can help with describing the learning here - algorithms, decomposition etc. #caschat

A4. Gradually building on skills, scratch in year 7, moving to a text based language such as small basic with its intellisense (helps dyslexic students) in year 8 and then something with that support removed in year 9. #caschat

I love using Kodu as world building. Sometimes we forget about the games and just get creative. #caschat

Q5. Do you teach about accessible design in your computing lessons? #caschat
  • catherinelliott May 1 @ 3:44 PM EDT
This is perhaps more for those of you in mainstream - do you look at making accessible websites, using MaKey Makeys to create alternative access devices etc? #caschat

Hi there #caschat sorry i’m so late! A4 Computer Science is about more than just coding. My most inclusive scheme is an ethics and law based one inspired by Ready Player One https://t.co/2jQdwZ6wMi available here

Q6. Where do you go for resources and support for #SENDComputing? #caschat
  • catherinelliott May 1 @ 3:50 PM EDT
Welcome along, and that looks really interesting! Thanks for sharing #caschat

A6 I will publish the results of my survey of computing teachers in SEND settings soon, and hopefully that will help make sense of approaches and give ideas for resources that work well. Keep an eye on twitter and CAS forums... #caschat

A6 So for SEND specific stuff, there are SEND resources on @BarefootComp plus we have some SEND Scratch activities on https://t.co/AxfX8dkpht but in the survey, that was the biggest barrier mentioned to teaching computing - lack of resources for SEND #caschat
  • catherinelliott May 1 @ 3:54 PM EDT
A collection of SEND Computing resources is also on my list to do, but not sure when I'll get there... #caschat
  • Vanderpere May 1 @ 3:54 PM EDT
#caschat A6 it varies immensely by SEND need - many SEND students thrive at CS! I think it comes down to what is important to the individual to learn and understand and so it’s hard to generalise about best practice.
  • catherinelliott May 1 @ 3:55 PM EDT
Good to know, thanks Charles #caschat

Can get it working on Mac OS at least: it's not available in a menu, but I set up a custom key in the text to speech settings (speak current selection) and just tried it. Screen reader access to music software in general is a massive barrier!

Also, lots of support for anyone teaching computing to SEND students working below NC or at primary level at the SEND Computing Conference on 18th May @STEMLearningUK - bursary to cover costs! #caschat #SENDcomputing https://t.co/fBGtEBfXQz

Yes, especially in web design e.g. making sure Ss use alt text for images so screen readers can identify the images etc. #caschat
