Hi Everyone! I’m Stephanie, a literacy teacher educator in NY at @UA. Which book first made me a reader? Judy Blume’s ‘Are You There God, It’s Me, Margaret? Such a powerful text. #preservicelit
Hi Everyone! Susan Vincent from Cincinnati. I teach preservice teachers at Miami University Regionals in Ohio. I'm driving home from vacation, so using scheduled tweets and hope they drop at the right times! #preservicelit
Hello everyone, I am a Chelsea Bonaker. Looking forward to this chat! I am a preservice teacher currently in my masters progrma at he University of Albany. The book that got me started with a love for reading was Love you Forever by Robert Munch. #preservicelit
A1. I'm using the PBS #GreatReadPBS booklist for summer reading. I read: Looking for Alaska (coming of age/boarding school), Peculiar Incident of the Dog at Night (from perspective of autistic boy), Handmaid's Tale (didn't love it!) #preservicelit
A1: I am in the process of creating my summer reading list for the #BuildYourStack initiative. I am hoping to add in a variety of children’s books for various ages and genres to familiarize myself with what my future students will be reading #preservicelit
A1: Hi everyone, Brent from Magrath. My stack has a bunch of for fun and then learning fun. Children of Blood and Bone, Thunderhead, and a few others are waiting for me as I finish Lions and Liars. 180 Days, THe Curious Classroom are in the mix. #preservicelit
A2. I want to be even more aware of new quality picture books and authors since I teach Teaching W/ Children's Lit! My goal is to research that this summer and not wait until fall! Any suggestions for websites I could use to stay current? #preservicelit
A2: I devour realistic fiction and historical fiction. My #teacherreadinggoals are to read more books in verse and graphic novels to better connect with students. I also want to make my reading life more visible to connect with other readers on @Goodreads. #preservicelit
A2: I am bad for this but I read what I like to read, I might try one non-fiction but I love to go on an adventure and I have so much time to adventure in the summer that is what I read. #preservicelit
A2: My stack is lacking in adult books, but I believe teachers must be avid readers of children’s lit. to connect with students. Learn more on how I cultivate teachers’ reading lives through children’s lit. in my @ChoiceLiteracy article: https://t.co/kQMau77Hmz#preservicelit
Typically I enjoy most fictional mysteries and romance novels. My #teacherreadinggoals are to find more time for free reading around my course work so that I can be a role model for my students of how to create a passion for reading #preservicelit
A1: Self-Reg by Stuart Shanker, Inquiry Mindset flipgrid book club this month, #cyberPD this month, and a stack waiting for next month. Mostly prof books this summer! #preservicelit
A3: Goodreads, following educators such as @pernilleripp, @MrSchuReads, asking librarians, clerks at my favorite bookstore and friends are usually where I get my next must read. #preservicelit
Can you believe it? It is time for the third question! Reply, retweet or create a new tweet with your response, but don’t forget to add A3 and the #preservicelit hashtag!
A3: Everywhere! I begin most conversations with the educators and students I meet with 7 words: So, what have you been reading lately? This always generates new titles. My next stop? @Goodreads and @ILA Choice lists! #preservicelit
A3. I love using Goodreads. I friended tons of educators and like to see what they are reading and how they rate / review books. Also, here is link to ALA's summer reading list for kids, by age level: https://t.co/PBDDUiISCS#preservicelit

A3: In the past I have solely browsed bookstores or asked my peers for book recommendations. I am looking for new ways to discover and share a variety of titles! #preservicelit
A3: @CathyMere offers many suggestions on her blog. I hear about lots on Twitter. Sometimes I actually browse at the library or book store! 🙃 #preservicelit

A3 Recommendations of Friends in my PLN like @JenWilliamsEdu! Connecting with others here is my way to build and grow my library. Lots of connected educators share their learning here. #preservicelit

A1 I’m a huge fan of ya and mg books like maze runner and aru shah and the end of time, so I’m set for fantasy, sci-if, and dystopian. I want to find hitorical fiction that will grab me #preservicelit
A3: Jumping in and leaving soon. I recently started following accounts on Instagram that make book recommendations. For example, I recently started following diversereads (on IG) and have found many new titles. Also, an app I recently found is We Read Too #preservicelit
I love that you are reading many of the same genres that your students would enjoy. I’ll send some historical fiction titles your way, Lucas! #preservicelit the I Survived series by @laurenTarshis are my favorite! #preservicelit
A4: Finding ways to share with other Ss is key! Ss may share their thoughts on a book with peers by creating an audio recording and then turning it into a QR code to hook the next reader to put it in their stack. @vocaroo is a easy option. #preservicelit
Here it is! Our final #preservicelit question of the chat. Reply, retweet or create a new tweet with your response, but don’t forget to add A4 and the #preservicelit hashtag!
@AffinitoLit A2 my goal is to not only complete my class readings, but also find new mg books that my future students will fall in love with #preservicelit
A3: this is interesting, we have an app Wechat reading, there are great books for education recommended, there are discussion forums for we to talk about how to apply these ideas in our classroom. It's a PLN for teaching literacy. #preservicelit
A4: Reading should be enjoyed, not tested & accounted for. Allow students the reading freedoms we take for granted as adults: choose books based on interest, abandon freely, connect with readers and simply read to read, not to prove your reading to others. #preservicelit
A4. I realize that reading truly is like strengthening a muscle. If you don't do it much, it's hard to start....but once you start, you crave it. We need to help children get started by finding books that hook them. #preservicelit
A4: Another lesson focuses on the classroom library: students need access to diverse titles across all genres, even those I might not gravitate towards, to honor all readers and their personal interests. #preservicelit
Q6: Time to sacrifice. What can we cut in our classroom routines to make sure literacy work that is meaningful is getting the spotlight? #curiositycrew#EduGladiators#preservicelit If anyone wants to go back and answer the slow chat Q's after these chats end. #curiositycrew :)
A4: Focus on the why: we read to change who we are by experiencing the stories, experiences and challenges of others in the pages of a book. Follow @justinstygles lead & frame reading as self-care. Check out his @ILAtoday blog post here. https://t.co/yUssUpKg5x#preservicelit
A4: A good place to start is to look for new titles is the list of books @NEAToday Read Across America has lighlighted in their calendars. There are diverse books for all ages and social justice issues along with lesson plan ideas #preservicelit
A4: The books I read last summer and the books my students circulated around the room the most this year. I had the time to dive deep and really enjoy them which made it easier to book talk and sell as the beautiful stories they were. #preservicelit
Here it is! Our final #preservicelit question of the chat. Reply, retweet or create a new tweet with your response, but don’t forget to add A4 and the #preservicelit hashtag!
A4: I feel that cultivating our summer reading lives for our Fall classrooms will help us to be prepared for the school year and re-ignite a passion for reading for fun! #preservicelit
Thank you so much @AffinitoLit and everyone for the chance to connect and share ideas! Friend me on Goodreads: Susan Vincent and my picture is me and my dog. #preservicelit

A4: it always surprises me when Ts say they don’t read books. How do you know what to recommend to kids if you don’t read? Also, what do you do all summer if not read? #preservicelit
Thank you to all #preservicelit educators chatting today! Let’s keep the rich conversation alive and slow chat throughout the month. Share titles and ideas for growing your reading life and be sure to check the feed all month! The archive of our chat will be posted soon!
@AffinitoLit A3 My wife is a huge fan of ya books and gets multiple emails a week from different sites. I also talk with my after school kids and visit Barnes and noble more than I should. We have an entire shelf of to-read books #preservicelit
#preservicelit A4: Offer opportunities for our children to exposed to books of their own interests. In this way, help them forming the habit of reading, not matter by themselves or with parents, for life.

Thank you so much @AffinitoLit and everyone for the chance to connect and share ideas! Friend me on Goodreads: Susan Vincent and my picture is me and my dog. #preservicelit
A4: I love going in to class in Sept, or on a Monday, & saying “wait until you hear/read this book!” Free time reading gives me book-things to talk about with students. #preservicelit
@AffinitoLit A4 Without classroom worries and planning, we can learn (and relearn) about the joy of reading and how new books make us feel without real life getting in the way #preservicelit
A4 In cultivating our summer reading lives, we learn there are days when reading doesn't come naturally/joyfully. By pushing through, developing the habit, we see the strenuous/frustrating aspects of the practice #preservicelit
A4 (cont'd) Thus, in our classrooms this fall, we can better understand these frustrations that our Ss will be experiencing. Through that mutual learning and empathy, our instruction and expectations can be better informed for the sake of our Ss success #preservicelit
I would like to become a part of a book sharing club with other educators to help add to my stack. I was able to read three new children’s books yesterday and felt so happy about that. I need to make the time to read to better my students. #preservicelit
@AffinitoLit I would like to join a book sharing club with my peers to help add to my stack. 📚 I was able to read three new children’s books yesterday from our class Padlet. It is easy it is too add books to the classroom by making time and connections #preservicelit
