WELCOME In the 2nd decade of the 21st Century, are we finding new teachers adequately prepared to use tech, methodology & pedagogy?
The Official Hashtag for the Conference next week is - Let the fun begin!
In the 2nd decade of the 21st C, are we finding new tchrs adequately prepared by colleges in use of tech, methodology & pedagogy?
tomwhitby: Please refrain from using the Hashtag as the chat takes place for the next hour unless you are in the chat.

: As we get thru the 2nd decade of the 21st Cent, how well are new tchrs prepared by colleges in use of tech, methodology & pedagogy?
New teachers use tech, but can struggle to make it meaningful for student mastery. Tough to get through red tape of 1st year.
Tammy! Welcome, to our TweetMeet how are our room 9 superstar avengers
Currently a doctoral student guest stinting in my advisor's classes, she's trying but not sure Ss see the applicability
New tchrs mayb tech inclined but prep programs haven't caught up.
Now - In the 2nd decade of the 21st Century, are we finding new teachers adequately prepared to use tech, methodology & pedagogy?
you should definitely check out
. Great Q. One for you: Would you go to a PD day where presenters told you ahead of time that no computers were allowed?
I think new teachers are definitely prepared by colleges with the use of technology! But I'm not sure about pedagogy!
I have to agree with you there. Seems like prep progs stuck in the 20th cent.
Welcome, Sarah! Thanks for staying up late from Scottland to join our TweetMeet on Collaboration
Have to change the institutions that prep our tchrs & schools so tech inclined tchrs can support stdnts & thrive
Now - In the 2nd decade of the 21st Century, are we finding new teachers adequately prepared to use tech, methodology & pedagogy?
tomwhitby: : As we get thru the 2nd decade of the 21st Cent, how well are new tchrs prepared by colleges in use of tech, methodology …
I feel prepared to do all those things, but not all schools are prepared to let teachers utilize those 21st cent. skills
Colleges prepare students well enough to get a teaching position, but the real learning of teaching takes place on the job.
What changes do you think need to be made at the institutions?
No empirical evidence, but seems New teachers still being taught using traditional strategies a.k.a. W/O technology integrated?
What do you feel gets in the way of utilizing 21st C skills in schools?
Winning combination Mark. Would add using common sense to this mix. All very important. https://t.co/22iaDgN1nQ
Now - In the 2nd decade of the 21st Century, are we finding new teachers adequately prepared to use tech, methodology & pedagogy?
I agree completely! College helps get students a teaching pos. but you can only really learn how to teach by teaching!
New teachers are very familiar with technology but may not have been prepared to use it in a way that helps Ss learn.
college teaches theory ... not necessarily real world stuff ... that comes on the job with real kids
as a new teacher, I definitely agree! I find it hard to integrate technology into lessons bc I never really learned how
Right on Tom... Common sense isn't all that common these days...
Is that to late to dabble, though?
Agreed! There is a combination of theory and experience that is very important.
If colleges aren't educating new tchrs to be fully ready to teach in the 21st Cent, are schools prepared to teach them as employees?
Well Dennis ... that'd be a good start, IMHO much more than that is needed.
What I have noticed is "21st century" is more about attitude than methodology or pedagogy ...
We need to talk about 21st Century learning today, tomorrow, and every day; the definition is literally changing every 24 hours.
schools/systems need to value use of tech as a tool (not silver bullet) & be empowered to use it. Otherwise, it can be threatening
Is that too late? Wouldn't new Ts benefit from modeling, too?
Well was it not taught? Or did your teachers not know...either?
I'd like to think that they are, but seems the adoption rate for school tech doesn't quite jive with the rest of society
good question, probably a mix of both
Not all universities only teach theory. I teach and focus on practical use to help students engage and learn in school.
yes! https://t.co/XV40ZJAzVr
Agree. They might know tech but using it to substitute traditional techniques vs. more efficient strategies
Well... IMHO it seems as though failed of education has no consensus about best use of technology.
Exactly - It's all about SAMR. How do we move past substitution.
Learn why missing school can make a big difference to a child’s academic progress and future. https://t.co/PARAvRN81L
I think they need on the job training and experience. They need the theory, while gaining the experience.
well Nancy and Quincy how often are 21C-skills utilized amongst educators...?
It's ok to let the students inform us on tools they value as well.
I still see an awful lot of substitution rather than true 21C skills.
Tech can't be the end goal, has 2b a tool to get to the end goal of stdnt outcomes/revolutionized tching/lrning
Speaking to a new grad. Digital tech course. Lecturer asked her to print some Padlet vids.
Depends on the school. Schools need PD for all teachers, whether new or old, to keep current and train teachers.
Education is supposed to be about creating lifelong learners. How can we ignore student voice?
Couldn't agree more, integration is 2 weak, technology w/o pedagogy is play time
Should our Edu system support teaching schools like the medical profession has teaching hospitals? Maybe the system is too big.
Interesting question. Do universities still have demonstration schools? https://t.co/PzBq3GaEEf
Should our Edu system support teaching schools like the medical profession has teaching hospitals? Maybe the system is too big.
Agreed! How can we move past substitution to the higher levels of SAMR?
Thanks Brian... makes so much sense...

What happens when school culture doesn't foster innovative use of tech for new teachers?
8% of teachers leave education every year. Via : What Are The Main Reasons Teachers Call It Quits? https://t.co/EcGGLuE1eY
If colleges aren't able to fully prepare relevant educators. shouldn't PD be an essential priority and part of a tchr's work week?
How might tech elevate student voice?
ldrshp ldrshp ldrshp. all this talk about tchrs, what about the role of the school ldrs
Tech is key in todays classrooms.Used correctly it greatly enhances teaching and learning.I have Irelands only school STEAM room
Or worse, it does but the Cooperating Teacher doesn't? New T ready and willing, but mentor isn't.
Colleges need to learn from new & established programs that do successfully prepare teachers, such as & RBT
To prepare teachers we need time in the summer (at least 2-3 weeks) and regulatory, weekly development. Lots of it T led.
I think new Ts are woefully underprepared in methodology and pedagogy. My new Ts struggle most in those areas
As we get thru the 2nd decade of the 21st Century, are new tchrs being prepared by colleges in use of tech, methodology & pedagogy?
and the grade/dept desire for uniformity can impede this use too
agreed but is there time to complete that ... and don't forget about learning content
short answer is no. In many cases, the students are preparing the educators in use if tech at universities.
My 2 teens frustrated, esp. son who has been told for 3 ask "we r going to take apart a computer." Still waiting, wants to learn.
Absolutely true. We claim time is the enemy to this. Should we be better at protecting our time? Surely a priority.
I spent four year learning my passion (content) 15 years learning about teaching ... and still learning.
Content, classroom management, time management seem to be big concerns for new Ts.
Teachers need to see tech and teaching modeled too. Open your doors and teach with no walls. Helping others, helps students.
still learning. That's the key.
Is 4 yrs enough prep time for student teachers to master both content and education? Maybe better 4 years of content & 2 Yrs of EDU.
Wish there was a tiered start for new teachers. For example teach less first.
students can also be great modelers/teachers of how to use tech
problem with education is we think teachers come out of box ready to teach. they don't no matter how awesome you think theprogram is
I'd say as schools change these things are awfully challenging for most Ts
That is a really interesting thought! Such as an extra prep Year 1?
I didn't find my passion (teaching ELs) until I was in the classroom for a few years. Def still learning best practices
I don't think it's about the amount of time, I think it's about how detached the learning is from the real context.
Nice, how do you foster those conversations--where, when, and with whom?
Should we move away from defining time spent to competencies achieved?
Do you think the longer we teach it becomes less about content and more about people? That’s what I am learning!
I agree, easier when there's no competition. Too much competition is bad, too, prevents valuable collaboration
Would be smart for districts to implement something. How to do it, though?
Not really, I'm for changing traditional one-teacher-one-class schools.
So true of EVERY job...why do ppl expect teaching to be different?
Definitely a challenge for all, but particularly for new Ts in my building.
Example: 5 T's teach whole grade-level. New T teaches 1 subject.
"Teams within Teams" is the way to go.
What tech do you wish teachers used in the classroom & as educators?
Looking for a 4th grade teacher ASAP. Anyone knows someone, please tweet me or email me!

Med school manages to do both content & practice in 4 years. Some of my ed training was invaluable Most was time wasted.
Our school has gone to "academy model" where that is happening.
Why does it have to be one or other--why not a large variety of learning institutions.
strong mentoring and peer coaching go a long way there. Invest in them!
Med school manages to do both content & practice in 4 years. Some of my ed training was invaluable Much was time wasted.
Where is your school? I know some candidates.
9-12 folks are less team approach oriented than middle or elementary folks.
I don't think you can learn teaching sitting in the classroom
Side note: Looking to collaborate with other schools for 3d Printing and other engineering projects. Interested?
But we can't ignore the import of theory and methods instruction; the idea that anyone can just walk in ready is absurd
Tiny school pilot to test this model?
The community is strong! Thanks to the for a great event! 🌎📡🔍💻⚗️❤️
True, definitely requires time in classrooms.
Orrrr, create new progs with majors embedded in Edu or vice versa. https://t.co/T1FbJmpuwN
Is 4 yrs enough prep time for student teachers to master both content and education? Maybe better 4 years of content & 2 Yrs of EDU.
A teacher comes out of college in a cocoon awaiting metamorphosis... it takes years to blossom into a teacher ... most don't wait
I teach in that model, we work closely together to team w/all Ss
9 Ts on gr level. 3teach reading, 3math, 3writing.HR for Sci/SS
There's developmental curve to this too.
Not sure how can survive without team approach
Do groups of 3 T's run a cluster, house, group?
Great teachers come from many great experiences, not just University. I've had some great influences. I try to give back.
Seen Ss fall through cracks as "math" T changes each 9 wk period
I agree w/you. the point is to have them better prepared & more relevant than current methods are producing.
Truth! But don't you think the program is a vital part of a teacher's growth?
No. Ss move across all 9 Ts, and shifts each 9 wks
We have mixed model including many T's many diff approaches--work to be student centered.
Please retweet! https://t.co/sabTvswp8G
Looking for a 4th grade teacher ASAP. Anyone knows someone, please tweet me or email me!
Love to hear that! I hope you can join our and learn with us on the
Absolutely! The impetus is on higher ed to evolve; the impetus on schools is to ensure we higher qualified Ts
I agree. collab tools like Twitter to help teachers find support sys beyond their schools
not really. So I can spend time making lesson plans instead of teaching. I didn't major in education ... I was OJT ...
Exactly why I have a problem with it for my ELs
And that is a problem that needs to be addressed.
We have cluster model --3 T's, specialists about 75 Ss.
tomwhitby: And that is a problem that needs to be addressed. TSell89
tomwhitby: I agree w/you. the point is to have them better prepared & more relevant than current methods are producing. mrclinefhs
No. I met a struggle in the past couple weeks, but found a new way. Love my Ss, community, potential.
I would rather train a teacher with deep content knowledge and no teaching knowledge
In past, had teams of 2."This is so much easier!"But...is it best?
but how much content did you have to sacrifice for your theories and methodologies?
Me too--sought the wisdom of the ages, that helped :)
Depends on needs--every context different.
Interesting. I always think that the content knowledge can be taught but having a love for learning and Ss cannot.
It's really about how time is spent. I may be old sch but I value content, methods, prep before full-time
Sorry to leave early, but time to be Mommy! See you next wk! Thx to for moderating
Sorry to leave early, but time to be Mommy! See you next wk! Thx to for moderating
Always welcome your thoughts, ideas, and insights, Shawn.
What are the best songs to learn your multiplication facts?
Just because you can pass the subject matter teaching test doesn't mean you have the ability to teach it - content matters
I Agree, especially with how quickly a Ts assignment can change-but sincerity & compassion for Ss don't
at lower levels yes but not in upper levels ... kids resent teachers who don't know
That’s surely a true statement. It is the reason I value several other factors more than pure content knowledge.
I agree, but in today's tech-driven rapidly changing culture, it's just not enough anymore. Relevance deals w/change.
Kids are more forgiving for your lack of classroom management than your lack of content knowledge ...
I agree w/Meagan. It’s much easier to strengthen content knowledge than other teaching skills.
Thanks I don't think you are alone in that experience.
The kids respect me because I can take them on a deep dive into the content not because I can manage their behavior.
Thanks to all who participated in tonight’s & to co-mods:
tomwhitby: Thanks KelseyJennett I don't think you are alone in that experience.
Sure it's tough! Maybe we need higher expectations at higher ed?!
Thanks to the moderator Team: & . will be returning soon. Thx to all attendees
Better to master the why and engagement of tech, rather than the how. Can learn how through YouTube.
Almost time for ... be there or be square!
learning about people is true for all jobs
on many levels is definitely a challenging for T & S
we agree more than you think; I think time is wasted on formal lesson plans, but I know what I gained from methods
Exactly and not very many people get that. https://t.co/apCAGFMhMA
The kids respect me because I can take them on a deep dive into the content not because I can manage their behavior.
Teachers use ConquerED data to help track student progress and make informed interventions for students.
Teacher Tip: The behaviour of kids in a school is a direct reflection of the behaviour of the adults in the school...
depends ... if you're teaching AP classes content matters ... you can't teach depth if you don't know it
still learning both but sharing experience with content thru learned societies like &
Truth! Management isn't about rules, it's about respect; knowing your stuff is part of that!
In case anybody was wondering, I support for at-large member of the (DC State Board of Education).
took me 10 yrs to get it ... honestly I suck as a teacher but I am pretty good at conveying information to kids
I don't expect content instr to have croom exp; but methods absolutely!
and my kids are the best when I am blowing their minds with content and making them think. and my lesson plans suck
I've taught 12 yrs and am still growing, hope to be in yr 35 as well; thankful for a great foundation though!
