Our mission for our 21st century chat is to create a positive 21st century learning environment for our students by sharing resources and ideas that has worked in our classrooms. Join us every Sunday from 8:00-9:00 PM (EST) on Twitter using the hashtag #21stedchat. All are welcome!
I am a pre-service teacher for Middle-Level Education and I look forward to everyone's input on how I can incorporate different methods of teaching with technology. #21stedchat
A1: It provides a much needed opportunity for Ss to explore topics at a deeper level, and demonstrate understanding in a creative & engaging manner
#21stedchat
A1- Ss need benefit from the extended exposure to the content. Project based learning allows them to interact with a topic in a deep and meaningful way. #21stEdChat@OSUSocStudies@perrysocstud
A1: #PBL creates opportunities for students to collaborate and thinking critically about creating something without step by step instructions. #21stedchat
A1 High-level thinking means making plans, testing thinking, sharing, getting feedback, and tinkering with the work. Tasks that allow students to do all that are projects. #21stEdChat
#21stedchat A1 I think it is important for students to be able to solve real life problems through inquiry and investigation. Students make meaning out of their findings.
At my student teaching placement, I try to explain to Ss that working in teams will be unavoidable in college/workplace! #21stEdChat@OSUSocStudies@kingintheclass

A1: I beleieve it is important to have project based learning in the classroom in order to fill all the the different types of learning styles of our young adolescents. #21stedchat
Same here, it’s important that Ss realize that they may not work with people they love, and that’s ok, but they do need to learn coping skills on how to manage work with others. #21stEdChat

A2- This is actually something I want to learn more about. From my understanding, PBL requires a lot of front-end setup so students feel comfortable stepping out on their own #21stEdChat@OSUSocStudies
Some students are struggling with the number of projects so it is a balance the teachers in our district are working to maintain. #elancochat#21stedchat
I like your addition of timeline. Even if it isn’t the final due date, ensuring progress is being made is sometimes difficult for students to regulate. #21stedchat
Depending on the project, I might take students to library/media center to learn effective research skills for social studies classes #21stedchat@grohcialstudies
Allotting only 5-8 minutes to develop rules will elicit whatever Ss have heard or think Ts want. Better to take the time to build trust and elicit their values: how do they want to approach their work process? Their work product? Their time? Each other?
A3: when creatinga PBL I️ like to incorporate naturally occurring check in points, sometimes flipgrid, sometimes a poster or chart, sometimes a playlist , there multiple ways to achieve this.#21stedchat
A3- One thing my mentor teacher does that seems to be effective is to set up checkpoints throughout the project. Keeps students organized without them knowing! #ssvpln@OSUSocStudies#21stedchat
#21stedchat A3: I use google form check ins with progress. Like to see info is spreadsheet to notice trends. Then set up conferences based on responses.
A3: Check-ins with students tend to be the most effective, but I also like to have students use Google Keep for task lists and #GAFE to manage documentation of progress #21stedchat
A3 Provide multiple models of excellence for Ss to analyze, explicitly teach ALL the skills Ss need to do well, allow class time for Ss to reach the expected level of quality, leave room for meaningful choice, and use a standards-based rubric. #21stEdChat
A3: Having students take on roles (with defined responsibilities) within the group helps students provide feedback to each other and hold each other accountable #21stedchat
A4. You need to make sure that PBLs are not an event by integrating them consistently. They can be a great way for students to start a unit and add information as they learn more about a topic #21stEdChat
#21stedchat Hello, All! STEM teacher in Prince George's County, MD A3: Google Apps are great tools for the Ss and Ts. They require some training to get the most out of them. #AliceKeeler
A4: Students need to share what they learned with others. I always challenge my students to think beyond the classroom and how their product could be beneficial for the school, local community, or entire world. I want them to not only consume, but produce knowledge. #21stedchat
A4 #PBL isn’t a fun activity at the end of the unit; PBL *is* the unit. The project directs attention to what’s most important, piques S interest so they engage more fully in the learning, and tells us what skills and content to teach. #21stEdChat
The best way to make sure PBL is not only just you can give them prompts. This would include making students hypothesize and collaborate while answering the prompts. @Edu_Thompson#21stedchat
A4: I️ like to have groups or teams evaluate others efforts, after presentation, or have them present to another grade level. Was their research and presentation on target? What feedback would you leave? #21stedchat
That is, PBL should ideally allow students to explore a topic of interest, making it fun. And if it takes place across an entire unit, it should have tangible outcomes that make it effective #21stedchat#ssvpln
#21stedchat A4: I think it is in the way that the teacher plans the PBL. If it is planned purposefully, students will see that the each step is connected to their overall learning.
My honor students are creating LEGO animations about their chosen topic, afterwards 8th grade Ss, my former Ss, will grade them and leave feedback.it keeps me connected to my kiddos throughout their education. #21stedchat
A5: During the project process, I have students reach out to experts on the topic they are studying for information when building their product, or feedback on an iteration. #21stedchat
A5- An easy way might be to simply invite others in the school community to come view and learn from the work. Administrators, other teachers and students, parents, etc. #ssvpln#21stedchat@OSUSocStudies@perrysocstud
A5 Sometimes the best audience is each other. Good reflection Qs: Who supported you while you were working on this project? Who pushed you to think differently or more deeply as you worked? Who inspired you by setting an example of excellence? https://t.co/y2kYJvCFCc#21stEdChat
Well the publish work my class in college can easily be done for kids of all ages and that is to create a blog and have blog posts. We use word press and create blog posts that way and I am sure there are other ways @Edu_Thompson#21stedchat
A5: Getting community members involved, we have school news broadcast were products can be shared, or having students choose their audience or way to share.#21stedchat
A5: We invited the public into view the final products during the evening. Some years we also invited community members in to view presentations during school, some students present to school board.

In a Gov class, encourage Ss to try to get their research/project in front of law makers and others that influence policy #ssvpln#21stedchat@OSUSocStudies

@KidblogDotOrg, @padlet, @googledocs too! Any platform that allows Ss to Ss engagement, removing the teacher from the equation to amplify Ss voice & choice is key!

A6: Teaching & learning needs to be student-centered & decisions need to made based on student thinking. Also - ALL students can learn & succeed. #21stedchat
Thanks for another great #21stedchat Next week will be discussing #ESSA join @Edu_Thompson & I next Sun 8 PM ET US. We can't do this without you. Sorry I missed tonight. Traveling to visit my daughter at college & my parents.
A6: The most effective use of PBL while maintaining value and integrity rather than assigning "just another culminating project"... #elancochat#21stedchat

A5: try iNaturalist app and do a #bioblitz for your schoolyard "project" and tap into global intellectual capacity with instant species IDs #21stedchat
a5: critical events! Museums, stage performances, transmedia student storytelling… set the date and start working towards it. Along the way put “episodic events” - improv theater hour, frozen flash mobs, collective storytelling… #21stedchat
