Tonia Waters, AVID Coordinator/teacher, snow approximately 1 inch and it is all melted away
-
Good evening . I'm Justin from Frederick, MD and I teach 5th grade. We got over 34 inches.
-
Hello ! I am julie in st louis - I teach college media courses =)
-
Christine. Elementary gifted. Charlottesville. Final tally: 19 inches and 3 snow days.
-
Hi , your topic piqued my curiosity, but I am well south of the snow in Mty, MX. Leslie, HS Bio T and Sci DH at an int'l school.
-
welcome Tonia. That's lucky it is all gone!
-
-
hello! that's about half of what we had
-
Wow, that is a lot of snow. Good to be chatting with you again.
-
Hello ! I hope everyone has dug out from under the snow. :) Lyn, elementary principal in Prince William County.

-
Good evening! Mel from Suffolk; my snow vacation ends tomorrow. Back to fourth grade reality.

-
-
Tiawana, AP from Richmond sounding off.
-
let me know if you have any questions.
-
So, did you even get the day off with that dusting.
-
John in Charlottesville with just under a half a metre of snow :-)
-
that is insane amount of snow
-
We have 30 - I wonder how long we'll be down
-
-
Hi all! Missie from Falls Church, VA & really no idea how much snow - just know it's one more day not w/my students :-(
-
hey phil! Looking forward to modding!
-
fourth graders are the best tho! Welcome
-
-
I am back tomorrow and ready. Exhausted from snow play with my 4 kiddos. Need to go back to work for rest.
-
you and your Irish ways. How are you, my friend?
-
-
-
what snow? We got a dusting Fri. but the bigger issue was sleet. A good dusting on Sat. w/a few icy streets still!
-
tell me about it! was working overtime
-
MA guy, so I know the deal!
-
VA is beautiful, we camped there years ago. Love the smell of the trees and the sounds of the winding insects!
-
-
Always taking up a teachable moment :-)
-
sad to miss then! You can always do a GHO with them. I did today!
-
Get ready to fix things. Q1 is coming in one minute.
-
nothing but 70 degree temps down here in Texas. I'd take some snow. At least to make it feel like something other than summer
-
you can have some of my 30 inches
-
I agree! My 3 kiddos keep me rolling nonstop on snow days!
-
-
-
Oh we were hammered. The dig out has begun. https://t.co/4kAfC6gmII
-
-
what snow? We got a dusting Fri. but the bigger issue was sleet. A good dusting on Sat. w/a few icy streets still!
-
-
-
they still havent even cleared my complex parking lot!
-
David ITRT for Dept of Juvenile Justice. 20 inches of snow.
-
-
A1: I think it can feel VERY overwhelming at first. I participate b/c it's fun and I always learn something new.
-
-
A1 I've kinda stopped bc I really want TOOLS & practical ideas for class, not necessarily all the cheerleading
-
absolutely. Can be very fast paced!
-
A1 I join Twitter chats to learn new things, be inspired, & connect. Others may not join due to unknown/fear of speaking out
-
A1 Well, I this is my first twitter chat and I am in an EDS program and it was an assignment, so that's why I am participating.
-
that's what we're trying to fix here tonight. Good to see you auntie.
-
A1: Participate to learn but many don't because they don't understand the value or the real purpose behind chats.
-
No snow plow in sight. More time for me to connect with my PLN https://t.co/sPYMgNFgeQ
-
-
they still havent even cleared my complex parking lot!
-
A1: many chats move to fast. Not using a third party client to manage flow. Not ready to take risks and make their voice heard
-
interesting assignment. What are you hoping to get?
-
-
A1: It can be intimidating but hopefully after a but of lurking, they'll jump in!
-
A1: Sometimes Q's are phrased to seek one answer. Some Ts may also fear not being expert enough, or having unpop/old school opinion
-
A1- Bad timing, worry about "how to" chat, or afraid they won't sound knowledgeable.
-
-
A1: fear. People are afraid to be perceived as wrong. Especially educators. We hate asking for help. Never want to feel incompetent
-
A1: I'm going to second the client comment. I'd never be able to keep up w/o TweetDeck.
-
If I didn't have Tweetdeck there is no way I could participate fully.
-
A1: Twitter chats have a learning curve to master: pace, lingo, hashtags. Once you get in the swing, they are addicting!
-
Third party clients def help
-
....or fools seldom differ :-)
-
A1 Sometimes the Qs all sound the same! Ugh!
-
A1 It was difficult to figure out how to get connected at first
-
This. It's easy to get isolated in education. Chats can help keep us connected and open to new ideas. https://t.co/JMA6cwPtp4
-
-
A1 I join Twitter chats to learn new things, be inspired, & connect. Others may not join due to unknown/fear of speaking out
-
definitely timing is an issue
-
A1: B/c it's interesting and useful ideas are freely shared. B/c they have other stuff going on in the evenings.
-
-
In my position I hold T PD sessions so I always throw in the value of Twitter but they have to jump in.
-
A1: Just recently started to participate in twitter chats & I didn't start sooner due to feeling overwhelmed.
-
right - we want to avoid the echo chamber
-
A1: Twitter can also feel like something adults don't do.
-
A1: Constantly challenged to learn and expand.
-
Welcome to your first Twitter chat! We are happy to help you along!
-
A1: is relatively unknown unless you are a twitterer. I have shared this with tons of people and converted them to it!
-
how do we break this down?
-
A1: To connect/exchange ideas w/people they share a common interest with, to learn. Don't b/c twitter is public. Or they forget :(
-
-
A1 to find other passionate teachers ! And find what is going on with schools all around The world!
-
don't worry it can be overwhelming at first, but it can get addicting after the initial shock
-
A1. Many ppl don't understand the power & value. Intimidated by quick pace, amount of info.
-
-
Don't want to offend either.
-
A1 Many Ts are intimidated by the firehose stream of info on here
-
me either. It's absolutely essential.
-
well you got here now! How did you figure it out
-
It is intimidating at first but totally worth growing your .
-
-
-
for sure. Life saver for me in chats.
-
-
very hard to keep up - how do you manage
-
-
I agree! It took awhile to learn I could take focus on what was good for me and think about the rest later. https://t.co/W91WLuj7HU
-
-
A1 Many Ts are intimidated by the firehose stream of info on here
-
Voxer is a great way to connect!
-
A1: Afraid to answer things incorrectly/ not give enough info & also frequent forgetters of hashtags in responses LOL me today!
-
especially when the Qs are released
-
So true. Always makes sense to start out smaller (like )
-
A77 questions can be restrictive ... I join for side conversations ... A8 and sometimes i'm a rebel and don't put A1 by my answers
-
haha not gonna point fingers
-
. I love Tweetdeck. Makes it easy.
-
A1 sometimes The language.. Im francophone i quite understand english but sometimes its hard to express what i realy wanna say
-
True! I've learned to create a separate column for the moderator in a busy chat.
-
A1: Twitter chats helps build community & is real time P.D. Ppl stay away from the unknown or unfamiliar
-
-
I heard a lot about Voxer but really haven't used it yet.
-
looking like today might be a good day for that
-
interesting. Never thought of that
-
when everyone had the same answers it is difficult to stand out or disagree.
-
Q2 is coming in 1 minute.
-
A1: Most of us like to stay in our comfort zone. Twitter may be uncomfortable for some.
-
A1 Participate for the chance to network & learn new ideas. Not participate because we fear the response we may get to our thoughts
-
-
A1 I think there are different levels to participation. From lurking to moderator different engagements lead to different outcomes
-
What about our careers? We have seen what happens when a "negative" tweet goes viral..
-
A1 We've done Twitter sessions to encourage T's and P's to use it. Some think of it as one more form of SM to deal with.
-
If a tweet is tweeted, but not favorited or retweeted was it heard? It is ok you will survive ...
-
when I first started I was super nervous what I said wouldn't make sense. Got over that quick. Haha
-
exactly. Which do you prefer?
-
A1 chats can feel as if everyone is in the "know" like a neighborhood party & youR new neighbor - Imp to reach out to new members
-
right - needs to be about saying what you feel
-
-
Delete it quickly!!! hahaha
-
LOL, I am crazy. I usually use my phone!
-
I think you think before you Tweet. Most of the negative tweets were way over the top and usually about Ss.
-
Its great for slowing down the conversation and getting to know the people behind the handles
-
It's like a walkie talkie. U can leave audio, listen on your own time, or talk back &forth
-
Yes, the platform, esp. for education chats, is very English dominant.
-
I have tried that and get so frustrated I have to find my laptop.
-
best 24/7/365 PD around. How can we get more people on board? . Slow and steady grassroots method
-
A2: It means everyone is agreeing w/ each other. No one is willing to tackle a difficult subject (hard in 140 characters).
-
absolutely. About making connections
-
while some are inspired by the knowledge ... like an adrenaline rush ...
-
Some people are more interested than connecting than others - many just see Twitter as a bullhorn https://t.co/M9KQkj7dyl
-
-
Its great for slowing down the conversation and getting to know the people behind the handles
-
A2 More of the same. We don't need 15 chats on why it's important to become connected. Repeated topics.
-
A1: Educators want & need to connect to be inspired! Why don't they chat? Don't know or are afraid to put themselves out there!
-
how do we tackle tough subjects then
-
And I find my level of involvement can differ from chat to chat...and that is okay.
-
Like our Richmond friend??
-
how do we educate them about this?
-
But, we can make mistakes.
-
A2 Everyone saying the same thing, not much "meat"
-
A2: I think that's a misconception. Many ppl find twitter a safe place to learn and fail forward through discussions, blogs, & bks
-
-
Hey from Richmond! Sorry I'm late
-
A2: Repeated topics or no new learner that hasn't been heard or shared somewhere else.
-
A1: The quick pace is intimidating! Just when you're done typing - everyone else is 3 answers past! https://t.co/37Eyz21p0T
-
-
A1. Many ppl don't understand the power & value. Intimidated by quick pace, amount of info.
-
A2: I've only been on Twitter a year. I've seen this said a lot, but I am not there yet. If the ideas are good, that's what matters.
-
-
If the truth hurts it still needs to be said ... we may not always agree, but we can be professional
-
-
I think did a good job of it talking about arming Ts. Need devil's advocate. Be careful about judging.
-
I think did a good job of it talking about arming Ts. Need devil's advocate. Be careful about judging.
-
A2: Lots are full of fluff- "Here's what I do" or "___ is great!"-no detail, no nitty gritty. Ppl want to share victory-not struggle
-
BOOM! I mean really a family writer complaining about spending time with her family...
-
A2: I take this to mean regurgitating or saying something outside of reality. Speaking of the quintessential perfect classroom.
-
you owe us cookies then :) welcome!
-
I always get lost in the side conversations.
-
A2: And if I can add, it's darn tough to come up with chat topics that aren't repetitive and producing the same old stuff
-
We have to keep asking ppl what they want to learn more about. https://t.co/kzbUvfAoVs
-
-
best 24/7/365 PD around. How can we get more people on board? . Slow and steady grassroots method
-
However, with new Ts joining every day, they may miss it the first 14 times. Should we stop...or continue for them?
-
agreed. I missed that one, but I read after
-
I've gotten so many valuable ideas from my PLN. The beneficiaries are students. I'm not that creative but my PLN sure is!
-
It is all about the new learning that will help you grow as an individual.
-
A2: echo chambers.Everyone saying the same thing. Chats can & should be about pushing each other. Challenging thoughts, respectfully
-
You and are topic rock stars!
-
exactly the struggle im facing while moderating
-
A2: Some people tweet to impress or fit in, reluctant to disagree. Some chats can be redundant esp if no side convo
-
A2: I'm not sure that's true. It is hard to say much of substance in 140. But people also say stuff on twitter they'd never say f2f.
-
it is like jumping into the fast lane the first time ... just step on the gas and enjoy the ride.
-
John Bennett, Emeritus in CT tonight, arriving late.
-
A2: could it be also the design of the question and the topic? Poor topic, something that doesn't challenge us or our thinking.
-
A2: Also many chats recently have someone trying to sell a book- everything points to self-promotion
-
Comments are shared so quickly and many participants have the same comment
-
-
that's what chats like would be good for
-
A2- Same topics, same stuff. People staying in a comfort zone, and afraid to venture out.
-
A2 I want to leave a chat w TOOLS & ideas - not just being told how great it is that I'm "connected" lol
-
Yes!! No nitty gritty...Love that. https://t.co/zgFzRIKfs6
-
-
A2: Lots are full of fluff- "Here's what I do" or "___ is great!"-no detail, no nitty gritty. Ppl want to share victory-not struggle
-
we do have to be careful. I try to assume my boss may read anything I type.
-
is one of my 2 favs. Even still. I participate or lurk because I love your authentic mojo & amistad. A1
-
one difference between Irish/UK chats and US is they don't tend to have set questions-a topic title but conv moves around
-
A2 nothing but feel good, pat yourself/each other in the back chat. No meat to convo or growth happening.
-
exactly, they just keep talking and don't actually interact.
-
A2: Side convos & connections are often the most important parts of the chat.
-
that's def part of my "beef" with chats. Ts just need to be real. Failure, making mistakes, & being honest are ok.
-
Everyone saying the same thing. It can seem like no one wants to rock the boat or challenge one another. https://t.co/ORRPcN8O8R
-
-
A2: It means everyone is agreeing w/ each other. No one is willing to tackle a difficult subject (hard in 140 characters).
-
or it could be not having any background knowledge on the topic being discussed.
-
A2: One of the great things about twitter chats: If you don't like the topic, you don't have to participate
-
curious - whats the other?
-
Imagine Doug speaking up about something!
-
are you lost? or were you found? the side convos are the best ... commonalities are discovered ... friendships born
-
Sorry I'm late. Rebecca, elem principal. I lost track of time as I was losing to my kids at another snowed in family game night!
-
interesting. How does this affect the chat?
-
it does require regular attendees to step up to the mark & get conversation started
-
(1) I've done staff meetings now at a handful of schools (2) One teacher at a time, tell how beneficial
-
altho, that might be really important to some people....
-
side convo is where the learning happens.
-
no problem - glad you're here.
-
or just not comfortable with speaking your mind... A2
-
Talk is cheap! Do what you say you will do! Dont see a lot of Twitter folks truly living it -lot saying the same thing again & again
-
Chats have lead to books & blogging. Through blogs ppl have found their voice and passion. personalized PD https://t.co/gcYrm9fVS6
-
yes they are! It's like at a conference when the best convo come during transitioning, lunch etc.
-
A2: Just because you retweet doesn't mean you thought of it or internalized it.
-
A2. I think some of this can be avoided by the way q's are designed for a chat.
-
but does that make it right?
-
-
Doug probably has opinions on this but he just got home from work
-
It's tough to put yourself out there for the "world" to see...I've become better with it with age
-
A2b: Truth? Here b/c there are good ideas & like-minded Ts. I can find other more negative interactions IRL. I'm here to breathe.
-
Side convos are very vital to chats.
-
A2: It took me quite a few chats before I was comfortable sharing more than an "I agree".
-
very true - that's why I joined.
-
depends on how you define "helpful" - some Ts might need the affirmation they don't get at school...?
-
-
-
anything divergent discouraged. Not all authors do this. Thinking spec. of a few that talk circles around their text
-
A1 That is best - going in to understand & work w/other cultures to see how they work & help in their area! https://t.co/vZl2WRmQqn
-
-
A1 sometimes The language.. Im francophone i quite understand english but sometimes its hard to express what i realy wanna say
-
I just started , it's small, but some ppl really appreciate it. Should I stop b/c a few tweeps think so?
-
and offer up PD for Ts can learn the ins and outs. I'd argue more are ready but need a slight nudge with the tool.
-
The value for me has come from connecting with people I meet in the chats more than the chats themselves.
-
hmmm interesting. I wonder if I can think of them
-
A2: Echo Chamber = Everyone's ideas on repeat. I like the support & positivity but need to be pushed to grow.
-
I moderated a chat 4 a chronic illness and all were first timers for chats. I chose to respond to all tweets to welcome.
-
A2: How do you get people to drop the act and get real though in a no personal forum such as Twitter?
-
-
-
Me, too! I feel comfortable with putting out there anything I would say in person. Old age helps. :)
-
not at all. But the bigger chats should have a responsibility to have more real conversation
-
This topic is awesome! I am so glad that my very first chat is on the very topic itself
-
agreed, but if that is all you strive for your truly missing out on benefits of chats & being connected
-
-
A2: And when we think about it, some of the same answers keep coming up because much of education comes down to handful of things
-
ALL voices are valid. no 1 should feel intimidated by another. no mtter how many followers they have.
-
this is where I think forming connections is helpful
-
also just like packaged PD- when Q's are generated to create specific conversation to sell, not always authentic.
-
Yes. I have facilitated a district pd for school administrators. It was a hit, and has transcended learning. https://t.co/87IATIf9F3
-
-
and offer up PD for Ts can learn the ins and outs. I'd argue more are ready but need a slight nudge with the tool.
-
A3: I don't want everyone to agree with me. I want ppl to tell me I'm wrong and why. Make me think about what I do & why.
-
true! But not all chats are meaty... =)
-
Welcome Rebecca! I lost tonight at sight word bingo, lol.
-
right - we need to grow, not just pack on back
-
-
A3 We don't grow as individuals or as a profession.
-
Leslie, I have been working on a Soanish Ed chat. Will let you know if we get it going.
-
I've done chats that way-- just flowing convo-- they also are good, bc some get lost in the questions.
-
That is part of it for me too. I've never been good at selling myself. I'm trying to grow.
-
Very true statement https://t.co/ovUcRslQN5
-
-
A2: One of the great things about twitter chats: If you don't like the topic, you don't have to participate
-
exactly. This is come up in Q6 more
-
this so true! But we keep finding ways to complicate it!
-
HAHA love it!! Thank you!! =)
-
-
I've lost at Life, Monopoly, and now Price is Right.
-
that is the main problem of it though
-
A2 An echo chamber chat means the mod didn't write good questions and the participants aren't trying to break it.
-
exactly. Twitter gives voice to all
-
A3. When moderators try to fit in too many ?'s & don't allow enough time for responses & convo.
-
A3: Questions don't always ask for depth, partially bc platform makes it hard, only 140 characters, after all.
-
-
nice. Happy to hear. I've done some building and district training. Good momentum, but hoping for more.
-
Need my PLN to keep me from thinking crazy all by myself. I don't mind being crazy but I need my tribe! https://t.co/Hlf2ws7v2o
-
-
A2b: Truth? Here b/c there are good ideas & like-minded Ts. I can find other more negative interactions IRL. I'm here to breathe.
-
very true. THis is why I love expacting into side DMs and Voxer
-
A2 The best are chats about being different where everyone is saying the same thing
-
of course...but there has to be a balance
-
what would be an ideal number for you?
-
better late than never! Jenn here, 3rd grade T from DE
-
-
A3: as a moderator, I have at times gone with a fluffish topic instead of a harder hitting one becaus emore people tend to join in
-
A2/A3: Edchats can be repetitive, but sometimes we need the reassurance & reminders about what's best for kids!
-
AMEN! Ideas should be exchanged ... I like to push convos ... new ideas ... sometimes it gets me blocked?
-
I think it's going well tonight
-
I think that everyone should chat about what they want to chat about. Twitter is glorious b/c we are free to do so!
-
Relationships. Good teaching. Importance of equality.
-
-
A3 sometimes its going fast.. Some new followers need to know thats tools like tweetdeck for example can help
-
My friend and I lead & & we try to stick to 5 for the hour.
-
has always taken risks, wrestled with the uncomfortable & I appreciate that.
-
A3: some chat are too vague. Must be meaningful to the person. some great ones , , .
-
-
Que bien! Creo que seria bueno para los maestros afuera de los EEUU.
-
very true! We're free to choose which we want
-
-
A3. 140 characters isn't always enough. Also just like email emotions or words are misunderstood.
-
Yes, it is absolutely about finding your tribe. Don't have one where you are? Get one on Twitter! Simple!
-
Twitter ... where the crazy, envelope pushing, can do educators hang out ... no one says "can't" here.
-
Sometimes being challenged causes me to think through my thoughts more deeply. Sometimes I do get upset tho but still reflect.
-
I enjoy when others comment or question what is written either by myself or others. I think this helps us dig deeper.
-
what are some problems with twitter chats? why are they problems?
-
A4: I feel the speed and the constant refreshing keeps Ts from participating. No Chance to really absorb and reflect
-
Amen for tweetdeck. I had a hard time following chats until I found tweetdeck.
-
that's how growth is formed
-
I have gotten tons of ideas from my PLN.
-
Hey Jennifer, thanks for joining us...Spent a year in Bridgeville at a now defunct school
-
A3: I struggle w/times of Twitter chats - right smack during bedtime or family time. I feel bad dropping out of chats
-
important to remember reflection is on the way
-
It goes a lot faster than I was expecting
-
that's a good perspective to have. We preach being constant learners. We need to practice that, too.
-
A3: I can reach out to ppl in my PLN through DM, they have shared advice over the phone Thx & so many more.
-
A3: Feeling afraid to ask a question when the chat is talking about something you don't know anything about
-
A3: My biggest issue- and one I may do a on is the fact that we don't get credit for the independent were doing.
-
hadn't considered that, I don't want the conversation to lag and usually prepare more than needed.
-
A3: It can get confusing to follow, with side convos, some people on Q1, others on Q3.
-
This also helps build relationships as these are the people that I tend to talk to outside of the chat.
-
-
Let the kids stay up later! Priorities ....HaHa
-
true story. This is an hour of PD we are working on
-
I used to teach in Bridgeville! Now Lewes
-
A3: Doesn't exactly answer the ? but the way is posting the ?s solves a problem. I can can scroll down &see it easily.
-
I think it just takes some getting use to. I know I will participate in more, I like this so far
-
it is a challenge at times!
-
Completely agree. 4-5 good deep questions with a lot of conversation. Trust your group and your Qs.
-
that's one thing I struggle with too. Don't want to see incompetent in a chat about the topic
-
A3: As self motivated learners we have to convince districts to support our learning. Diff Learning works for kids but not adults?
-
A3: I love learning about new resources!
-
Enough with problems. Q4 is about solutions. Coming up in 1 minute.
-
We can in Albemarle County Thanks
-
We try to stick to 5 really good ones & maybe have one extra just in case. We do abt 10 min per ? & it works well.
-
i'll be honest ... i get annoyed by some Eds who only share blogpost but never join in convos.
-
-
It is is but I look at it as learning, rather than getting credit for learning. S/t I try to teach Ss.
-
I know, but we notice...I notice.
-
first time tuning in! Kindergarten teacher from Suffolk!
-
A3: Hard to fit all the chats in that I would like due to timing sometimes. Family/Bedtime during my fav chats.
-
-
Hi, Amy from Front Royal. ITRT in Fairfax Co. Sorry I am so late! First time here!
-
is now trending in USA, ranking 47
-
Chats that encourage us to talk about what is happening in our buildings help me think of ideas or things differently.
-
-
what if their blog is the way they join convo?
-
I agree. I like for moderator to interact & push thinking (Like )
-
-
A3: Pls know we recognize everyone has a different learning curve, and are at different places. I may still be on Q1 thats okay.
-
if we played them together, one of us would have to win...it would break one of our streaks!
-
wow never thought of this...Vaild point!
-
Interesting. I usually have 8-10 questions ready to go...Try to adjust based on the convo
-
Me Too!! This chat is right before Ellen's Design Challenge on TV so I am all good.
-
absolutely! That's why Twitter clients exist
-
but if they don't engage it makes it pretty one sided ... convo = 2+ voices ...
-
A4 I try to open up dialogue with people to further the conversation
-
-
A4: Don't hold back and engage in conversations. Take the conversations outside the chat as well.
-
No late passes here, just glad to have you!
-
-
-
A1-been avoiding mostly because it is hard to follow all the tweets. Little overwhelming. Learning
-
A3: I'm always excited to share the concept of Twitter chats with others has a detailed lesson of every chat
-
very true. How do you engage them?
-
A3: I very much enjoy Twitter chats. As in life, Twitter is what you make it. I haven't had any problems so far.
-
I used to be very guarded about saying,"I learned this from a Twitter chat" because many Ts don't get it. Now I say it loud & proud.
-
I appreciate you very much for this. Always questioning and making me think further.
-
You're doing a great job! Love ? Pics. We do that too. Makes them easy to spot.
-
-
have you tried Tweetdeck?
-
Welcome, glad you could make it tonight!
-
A4: Tough Q-trying to bring in specifics from my classroom and school to expand convo rather than general statements of agreement
-
A4: Moderate a chat, don't be afraid to push the envelope. Lurk on other chats, bring in ideas. Also, bring ?'s you have as topics
-
absolutely https://t.co/UEhis4Y3p5
-
-
A4: Don't hold back and engage in conversations. Take the conversations outside the chat as well.
-
-
A4: Don't be afraid to step outside of the echo chamber.
-
what helped you to shift?
-
some won't respond to tweets ... i've had Grammy winners respond to tweets, but some eds don't ...
-
thank YOU for introducing me to Twitter
-
A4: Like any convo, I think it's good to use "wait time" before responding, esp. if you feel strongly about s/thing s/one has said.
-
I was the same well at first but I say it loud & proud and try to get others to join the conversation
-
A4: make Ts feel it's okay just to observe. Sometimes a quiet observer can take away a lot. Just like in our classrooms.
-
A4: Lobby for change in the district is challenging, but if you spread the word you can develop buy-in. Spreading the word is key!
-
or even from my PLN and mean it. https://t.co/YDcSvAXdFW
-
-
I used to be very guarded about saying,"I learned this from a Twitter chat" because many Ts don't get it. Now I say it loud & proud.
-
-
I tend to avoid the bigger chats because it does move fast and I can't build relationships.
-
I look forward to chats. My brain is always spinning so it is a great way to learn, share, and synthesize. https://t.co/9Mua52H3TC
-
-
A3: I very much enjoy Twitter chats. As in life, Twitter is what you make it. I haven't had any problems so far.
-
very true. I like to have things to apply to my teaching
-
took me a while to find the questions 😂 whoops! I get it now!
-
A4 must be willing to fully engage and practice your participation
-
by being real. Authentic even raw...because that's where magic happens. Like ie: My name is Kimberly. Today was hard.
-
Bring others in and help them engage in the chat as well.
-
A4: Don't be afraid to ask questions or don't be afraid to engage with others. We are a team.
-
This is why I was glad that let me moderate. Pushing the edge of the twitter chat
-
... I don't ask anymore ... I have plenty of other Eds who have an answer ...
-
Start small to get the buzz going https://t.co/cpE0pmFJaE
-
-
A4: Lobby for change in the district is challenging, but if you spread the word you can develop buy-in. Spreading the word is key!
-
that's a shame... we all need to interact and share.
-
-
A4: If I look at the people who I've met and admire most, they're the ones who don't hesitate to put themselves out there
-
-
After really good chats, I have a hard time winding down b/c my brain is spinning!
-
haha! Yes! My kind of PLN!
-
-
Hey no LET here! Different voices lead to better conversations!
-
-
Found you now. Mary from Loudoun County I teach 2nd.
-
then there are MANY who will share/respond and that is awesome
-
-
as you tweet throughout the week use the hashtag.
-
A4: I am here a lot. I engage a lot. I am trying out new things, like modding or joining a chat from a distant state like .
-
-
-
important to let your true self shine in all
-
Let's go bigger with Q5 in 60 seconds.
-
I'm feeling that right now!
-
You can always skim through the chat when it's done. Many will post a Storify link to make it easier to review
-
A4 Vote with your feet and tell the mod, politely, why. Start side conversations. Make the chat what you need regardless of Qs.
-
Me too. I reflect on the topic & think about how I'm going to incorporate that to better my Ss
-
-
I agree. I did that a lot in the past and have a teacher who started that way as well.
-
-
a4: make no mistake I'm not here 4 the hours- but it would be nice to be recognized as someone who is out here trying to get better
-
it is. I need it for a relationship to be on the level...even on twitter
-
we're glad you're here - I'm still thinking on your first answer
-
I've learned so much and have taken risks that paid off. I'm proud to be learning from really smart Twitter people! 😃
-
-
-
-
-
-
A4 There are no actual twitter chat rules. It's for you by you.
-
maybe we can expand this in Q5
-
-
Make sure your self and real life self are the same! Don't be a twitter hero and real life zero! Bring it for the kids too!
-
same!! If I can, I hit another chat!
-
I have taken more risks as well because of the people and topics I have learned from Twitter.
-
A5 We can refuse to join Twitter chats that aren't important. Demand the topics you want and need.
-
one of the things I like about . Get lost in side convos
-
A4: . We all have ideas and share our passion and horror stories. Give a follow and get a follow- spread the word here.
-
how would you measure it?
-
A5 Ask questions. Push thinking. Don't be afraid to ask why or how
-
could you do just clock hours? Many in-person PD is measured like that
-
Exactly!! This is another chat fail-- it's okay to go off topic, and ditch questions if needed.
-
A5: Again, step outside of the echo chamber. Disagree, ask for more information.
-
just share your thoughts out loud. . Follow some people, and you are ready. https://t.co/8LQVxn1OBg
-
-
A4 There are no actual twitter chat rules. It's for you by you.
-
The only reason I do anything is for the kids. Check , a class hashtag. I'm bringing them on board!
-
-
A4: The easiest way to change anything is to LISTEN, be aware of the fears/issues/barriers; your acknowledgement is key.
-
A4: Don't be afraid to reach out to ppl w/DM or Voxer. We are all here to learn and all have something of value to share!
-
exactly. And tweets can definitely show fake people. Pictures show work with Ss
-
be like and volunteer to run a chat!
-
-
A5. Volunteer to guest host/moderate a chat. Answer the call for chat ideas/themes. Share your resources.
-
A5: Get the most out of a chat by asking the questions that really ignite discussion in chat or in side convo. Have a goal to learn.
-
how can we get this to be the norm?
-
Don't worry about change, just make PROGRESS.
-
One of mine is when a question keeps going - can last questions be dropped? I.e. Stop at #6 not #8? https://t.co/7YLbo3ZHO1
-
A5: Which course? So many to choose from. Each day I wake up and do what I can, all day long. That's all anyone can ask of me.
-
A5: Follow the guide led by the questions & respond truthfully- not necessarily by the book or best practices. Own the mistakes
-
Not a clue, except maybe to do it ourselves - consistently.
-
My voxer is going off. Great tool for those who are ready my handle is tgiles https://t.co/5e3XC2ug0W
-
-
A4: Don't be afraid to reach out to ppl w/DM or Voxer. We are all here to learn and all have something of value to share!
-
A5: Share what you know, who you've learned from. Help to correct misconceptions & misinformation but w/out judgement or shaming.
-
-
-
A5: As one of 's moderators, some of the best chats are the ones that I host where I don't "know" the answers
-
Agree, teachers can actually see the lessons done w/kids. Not just ideas, but in action
-
I would say individualize it - If you want to rock at 6, stay there. If you're ready to roll, go there
-
I agree that sharing mistakes, failures, disasters, make it a "safer" place for others to do so.
-
A5: Challenge absolutes and hyperbole, two twitter evils that amplify the echo chamber
-
Totally not a cut on you. General problem.
-
videosa are great too. Loved the vid I saw of you singing/rapping with Ss
-
one safe chat that happens on Thurs. is 4Q 30minutes Share what you are reading. Hope to see you
-
I've stopped participating in chats where there was only one right answer. No dissent allowed. No way for me to learn.
-
Educators aren't great at reaching out... they are used to thinking they need to know it all!
-
Exactly. It is all about sharing, learning and growing together w/o judgement.
-
Would be so cool to have a chat where all answers needed pics!
-
-
and that's going to tie nicely into Q6
-
We need to insist on Storify / some type of summary; and use that & participant follow-up to find good ones. https://t.co/pGH0Cr0l61
-
I adore . He has SO many viable resources and interacts with many, if not all, chats to share!
-
everything is measured in clocked hours, but that does not guarantee learning
-
True Collaborative Learning in action. https://t.co/dhQ3BH4xib
-
-
A5: As one of 's moderators, some of the best chats are the ones that I host where I don't "know" the answers
-
with does something along these lines
-
Jason from NY popping on late!
-
A5: Honestly, I love Twitter but it's not a set course for all.
-
Speaking of good books, thanks for your suggestion on Voxer. I haven't read that one.
-
I often create chats about topics that I want to learn about/ interest me!
-
That's great. You are making a huge impact on how they interact online!
-
A5 or A4 or A2 or A? Questions should inspire thought and discussion ... don't be afraid to deviate from the plan.
-
A5: if we are out here trying to learn on our own time- let us and send in the transcripts. I apply what I learn from here
-
-
As a visual learner, this is fantastic. My fav form of PD is observing Ts. Love peeking in classrooms!! https://t.co/uSNlYIX7IS
-
-
Would be so cool to have a chat where all answers needed pics!
-
It is amazing. My fav book in Lean in by Sandberg. https://t.co/U5nBGdz6UK
-
-
Speaking of good books, thanks for your suggestion on Voxer. I haven't read that one.
-
See...THAT sounds like fun!
-
-
why can I imagine this? hah
-
Do you agree? Disagree? Let's see what Q6 asks of us in 1 minute.
-
Sounds familiar. I am the same way! https://t.co/Tt6kK3Ija0
-
-
I look forward to chats. My brain is always spinning so it is a great way to learn, share, and synthesize. https://t.co/9Mua52H3TC
-
-
A3: I very much enjoy Twitter chats. As in life, Twitter is what you make it. I haven't had any problems so far.
-
-
Love that one! As soon as I read it, I started sharing it with others.
-
maybe a future ? Picture chat
-
I agree. While I sit here and thoroughly enjoy this, I know great Ts who would find it an infringement on family time.
-
I am delightful and demure ;-)
-
-
He was helping us rock out at w/ &!
-
A5 I moderated my first chat about a month ago- very exciting. Connected with so many great people
-
Yes, it has four questions, and we send them out in advance. https://t.co/QOajq9wBKd
-
-
Love 30 min chats. Leave with my head spinning but such good stuff in short time.
-
When I posted THE "school's closed" announcement, I started with Twitter. People caught on quickly!!! 😉
-
the transcript of chats. I send them out for
-
Thx ! Just a normal day! If pictures are worth a thousand words, think of the impact of videos!
-
-
and Jerry knows how to ROCK A CAPE!
-
A1-6: One thing, tho, & I'm trying to do some research on this during my doc program, is that some educators are fearful of using +
-
-
I have questions crafted, but I don't mind rearranging them or creating new ones because of the conversation/answers
-
My goal for this semester is to help them create a professional online presence that they are proud of. too.
-
Delightful. Demure. Rowing. One of these things is not like the other.
-
storify link? certificate link at end of chat
-
in love w this idea would need qs out early. Let Ts prep pics ahead of time to allow for convo
-
Truth! Something we need to change! https://t.co/f2xhBs9nFM
-
-
Educators aren't great at reaching out... they are used to thinking they need to know it all!
-
Relevant https://t.co/ay2gen2tf9

When I posted THE "school's closed" announcement, I started with Twitter. People caught on quickly!!! 😉
-
It is a web tool that allows you to choose tweets from a chat and put them into a slide presentation for review later.
-
Just being willing to put yourself out there is very important https://t.co/Mp5u2g9OVt
-
-
A5. Volunteer to guest host/moderate a chat. Answer the call for chat ideas/themes. Share your resources.
-
My husband is an awesome teacher, but would rather be told about things I find on Twitter vs. being on Twitter.
-
-
Oh, I know what you are talking about now. Thanks.
-
-
A6a Change needs to be thought out. Questioning helps that. Needs to be done in straightforward and respectful manner.
-
A6b See if person has a point and discuss (either on tweets or DM.) If just trying to troll, ignore/block
-
-
A6;Dissent can be helpful if done respectfully. Diff points of view always a good thing
-
-
I just held a PD on this - adding visual media to lessons. Called it Picture is Worth 1,000 Words.
-
Could you all put who is on your question pic? Scrolling through the convo & can't figure you out what it stands for.
-
Get the topic out a week ahead of time and encourage people to take pictures during the week
-
I'm gonna keep sharing this when I see the word 'like'. Hopefully it's contagious! https://t.co/ftpS2W9Umg
-
-

Would be so cool to have a chat where all answers needed pics!
-
-
It's an add-on for Twitter that helps to forever document a chat from a certain night.
-
-
I had to lay off the voxer because it annoys my family. I try to listen in the car during my commute.
-
social media in their capacity as educators b/c of restrictions (or perceived restrictions) placed on them by employers.
-
Always got your back, my friend! https://t.co/iDA2m34TIH
-
-
A3: I can reach out to ppl in my PLN through DM, they have shared advice over the phone Thx & so many more.
-
I'm stealing this idea!! https://t.co/FVYimegFgW
-
-
When I posted THE "school's closed" announcement, I started with Twitter. People caught on quickly!!! 😉
-
so how do we legitimize it?
-
I like the idea of seeing the questions ahead of time.
-
Very true! It's difficult sometimes to realize it's OK to not know everything - being a learner is good!
-
Pictures can get s talking so easily which puts the ownership of learning on them=less T Talk
-
-
Mine feels the same. He is & he's excellent, but he's not much for tweeting. Can't all love same things.
-
Huge life lesson. Could be a course of it's own in the modern age.
-
Respectful dissent encourages critical thinking and evolves the conversation
-
A6: I don't know how you learn if there's no dissent. I'll just ignore the disrespectful.
-
I try to get back to the point or just leave if it's too bad.
-
A6- No one likes to feel attacked-moderator has to control the "rude" ones, or exit them from chat. Everyone can disagree-nicely!
-
A6: Encourage discourse because it often leads to a deeper convo.
-
YES and ... always there to support.
-
That's great. Sounds so simple to do but many times overlooked
-
A6: Usually engaging in convo determines if troll or authentic dissenter. Need dif opinions to make Ts consider mult perspectives!
-
Meeting the needs of everyone. what if we taught this way? https://t.co/lvwRaA9jHl
-
-
I like the idea of seeing the questions ahead of time.
-
Meeting the needs of everyone. what if we taught this way? https://t.co/lvwRaA9jHl
-
-
I like the idea of seeing the questions ahead of time.
-
Helping the oldest w/ELA HW now that little guy is in bed, sorry to bow out early! Thanks for an engaging chat!
-
I don't love Voxer yet. All the groups I am in are very large and overwhelming. Can't listen to all.
-
this is a real issue - can a T be let go if they do something on twitter? https://t.co/OyZs4oqcPR
-
-
social media in their capacity as educators b/c of restrictions (or perceived restrictions) placed on them by employers.
-
-
A6 Individuals have to learn not to take things personal
-
YES! & Ss analyze picture or video clip in less time than text. Plus its more fun and memorable.
-
-
A6. I should hope there is disagreement on important topics! If the answers were easy we'd not need to talk!
-
Yes, it very well could be, but I teach HS biology, so I am doing what I can! Someone should. I am someone.
-
When I did strength finders... a learner was my number 2 strength! Woo was number 1
-
I woudl say with storify link, PD coordinator could judge for self
-
-
-
Yes...now to focus the pics, what are we looking for? What do we want to learn?
-
A6: Only handful times has discourse been rude and that's usually a misunderstanding (140 char limit, seeing 1 tweet in isolation)
-
good call. Sometimes ignoring is the best medicine
-
A6 if its disrespectful, i think its not worthy to continue chating there. Were suppose as teacher to represent respect..
-
Then you get into is it a personal account or a professional one where you claim affiliation to your school?
-
Monday nights at 8. Love to have you.
-
Yes, https://t.co/ksH0BhYC7J
-
-
A6: I don't know how you learn if there's no dissent. I'll just ignore the disrespectful.
-
-
There is a such thing as "Healthy Conflict". The Book- 5 Dysfunctions of a Team- Great book. https://t.co/dnjpDp2t1D
-
-
A6: I don't know how you learn if there's no dissent. I'll just ignore the disrespectful.
-
A6: Respectful dissent is awesome. That's what leads to the "meat" of a chat. As long as it's respectful.
-
I have 2 separate accounts. One for my class, one for me.
-
very true - don't want to end something good
-
A6: Dissent from? I have learned about , , , and on here, to name a few. These are good ideas, no?
-
A6: Disagreement can be good but should always be professional. Once it becomes unprofessional I disengage.
-
It's such a new thing@Mr_B_Teacher School district's are trying to keep up. Policies can be fuzzy. & some really fear social media
-
A6 I think just like texting it's easy to misinterpret what is said and how it's said
-
A6: it's always the devil's advocate that makes you see a different way. Healthy debate
-
that's how we grow. When it is disrespectful is the problem
-
I have found twitter chats to be respectful even when there is diff points of view
-
One minute until Q7. Take this time to follow some connections from tonight
-
I have 2 separate accounts. One for my class, one for me, both on my resume.
-
storify would show how much is browsing. And still, in person PD can be a lot of just listening
-
Try to find 1 person to do it with to practice? I am hoping will be mine. hehe
-
Legally, bet they could. I made sure to include in my bio that my opinions are my own, not district.
-
I have an account for the school and then a personal one.
-
Healthy debate is important and it is ok to have different views and styles.
-
If we all agree... no one learns.
-
Generally speaking if a topic doesn't interest me. I don't get involved
-
-
I wonder how they could legally. Dependsing on what was said
-
-
-
-
The is super large and can rack up a hundred messages in a day. I can't keep up at all.
-
IMHO, even with these stages I don't think it will be for everyone no matter what we do or do not do.
-
to be devils advocate - what if you miss out on something?
-
A6: Seek respectful discussion, including dissent. In moderating, I've never had to control, ignoring works! https://t.co/FkKkA5Ob5S
-
I have not been in a twitter that wasn't respectful.
-
its a question for would admins be open to twitter chats as pd? https://t.co/T5daWlrKOV
-
-
I woudl say with storify link, PD coordinator could judge for self
-
tough to read tone! It can be a real challenge.
-
I also don't say anything I don't want a P or admin to see.
-
-
Thought I'd swing by! You're doing a great job!
-
A7 I'd like a "how to" on project based learning & standards based grading. Feel like some of the chats are too advanced for intro
-
-
Please tell me, what are some REAl topics you want to discuss!
-
and that's important. Not everything is for eberyone
-
A6: I've taught Ss to assume no ill-intent. I try to apply that as well on Twitter and elsewhere.
-
As adults we should be open minded to others views and opinions. Doesn't mean we have to agree just be respectful in our differences
-
Yes, that's important to disclose But still even w/that some educators can be discouraged from using SM
-
Good point and it's tough to challenge a school/district policy too
-
All of mine are huge. Growth seems to be the only thing that matters. That's one peeve. More ≠ better
-
A6-I find to be best users of Twitter & hashtags; often keeps us in groups with common ideas. Pro/Con chats help promote ideas.
-
I would love to be able to do this.
-
find a twitter chat that has a corresponding voxer (not a big group) and get added & lurk
-
Hi all so sorry! Switched planes. A7: Using a collective teacher voice to make greater changes.
-
disagreement could be between the way things were & new inventive, creative ways to help children succeed. https://t.co/ll0aVYVRjd
-
-
A6. I should hope there is disagreement on important topics! If the answers were easy we'd not need to talk!
-
A7 everything that is related to education
-
A7: Schedules + intervention periods. How do they work at different schools?
-
I feel there is only so much time in a day. Twitter is only 1 form of PD. Other things are important
-
-
Absolutely! and Albemarle County have found a way to do this!
-
I'm really digging idea. Also would like to tlk more about socioeconomic gaps
-
-
Pretty sure there would be a way, if u were really "dissenting " about district, not just gen issues
-
Ditto on intervention periods
-
Those types of ideas probably don't belong anywhere in writing, yes? It's my policy too. Neutral to positive here.
-
thanks! Very fast moving - can't keep up!
-
I love Twitter chats, but it's more surface level. Hard to get to how-to's or deeper levels/insights.
-
A7: I'm open to anything. As a teacher I wear many hats and can always learn from many different people who fill different roles.
-
very true. But this goes into freedom of speech, maybe? I'm not a lawyer so I'm not sure
-
I think it's important to think about the last time you changed your mind after having a dialogue w/ someone growth mindset
-
I'd love to talk about how ts work collaboratively, what supports make it work and what is needed, what's happening in other schools
-
how do you dig deeper then?
-
It can be a dance... Sometimes I wonder if my tweet will result in a phone call. However, if it best for Ss, I do it.
-
At least for a few minutes. :) Looks great! Need to go back through.
-
-
A7: I am interested in learning, for everyone, Ss, Ts, Ps, As, and it's why I started /. Whatever form it takes.
-
A7: How to work more collaborative, less competitively.
-
1. How do we make public schools a success 4 all sports, musicreach all cultures poor, average, high-how do we do in for academics.
-
I will be storifying then too
-
and its being done lets make it statewide https://t.co/AR1dNEx4Xh
-
-
Absolutely! and Albemarle County have found a way to do this!
-
Ts often share additional resources. I have lots of tabs open at the end of the best chats
-
Sam has some great insight on T's and SM with legality concerns.
-
A7: I like chats to intro with a trivial/personal question to better know personalities of my Twitter colleagues.
-
-
I think it really depends on the stance & leadership of the particular school district
-
-
I've got to run! I was supposed to be working! Thanks everyone. It was great as always! Thanks for moderating
-
Agreed. I have met so many people face-to-face because of Twitter and that prob would not have happened otherwise.
-
A7: I would love to learn more on PBL combining ELA and SS. If I want "otherwise" I hit up
-
A7: It would be interesting to be able to visit people's classrooms you connect with during a chat to see ideas in action
-
great place to grow your PLN for those conversations later.
-
Works for me & figuring out for recertification points. We have weekly as well. Some of best pd https://t.co/wDEiil8bhH
-
-
its a question for would admins be open to twitter chats as pd? https://t.co/T5daWlrKOV
-
-
I woudl say with storify link, PD coordinator could judge for self
-
that's some of the best way to develop relationships. does this well, as does
-
-
you're welcome! Thanks for joining
-
-
-
Such an important thing to work on together. Can't close the achievement gap by ignoring it. https://t.co/5Z9iNL88yD
-
-
1. How do we make public schools a success 4 all sports, musicreach all cultures poor, average, high-how do we do in for academics.
-
this should make it to soon!
-
Yes, it's a brand new area of policy & law. Just look at what is happening in cases w/students & SM
-
-
To add to that: What do you do w/Ss who don't need intervention during an intervention period.
-
Great chatting with you, David!
-
how do we make twitter a PD opportunity?
-
Need to go! Thanks for letting me be there with you:)
-
So true! Been to many conference by myself but because of twitter I feel I know many of the other attendees
-
-
F2F PD, GHO, etc. Wish there was a platform that had more than 140 characters but can't type a book. :)
-
