Welcome to #formativechat. I am excited to be learning with everyone today. Q1 will be up in a few minutes, While we're waiting please share who you are and what you do connected to teaching and learning. https://t.co/CTh5hgSz38#beintentional
Intro - Hello and Merry Christmas Dean V from Regina, Saskatchewan, Canada High School Math Teacher and proud @goformative certified educator #formativechat
I am a Science Teacher and Instructional Technology Coordinator at Neuqua Valley High School in Naperville IL. Super excited to be here learning with everyone tonight. #formativechat
Q1: Stage one of the learning process is about attention. What resources or strategies can we use to capture and maintain student engagement? #formativechat#beintentional
Q1: Stage one of the learning process is about attention. What resources or strategies can we use to capture and maintain student engagement? #formativechat#beintentional
A1: When developing your lessons you need to think of a great hook or anticipatory set. It has to grab the attention of your students. we often overlook this important piece of a quality lesson. #formativechat
A1: Total Physical Response strategies are a great way to engage kinesthetic learners. It allows students to connect language response to a physical movement. Integrating TPR with technology is a good way to present content and elicit responses from students. #formativechat
A1 I like to involve Ss more, ask what they are interested in and come up with ideas for games, unique ways to practice the content, let them lead more #formativechat
A1: start with a good question or provocation to make them think and wonder....could be a video, visual, tweet, IG post, article, news report, stats, etc.. #formativechat
Hi everyone! Rachael from Perth, Australia. Primary science & digital tech T and cohost of #PrimarySTEMChat - catching up on some chats I can never join normally, while itโs summer holidays here. Looking forward to #formativechat
A1: I had the great opportunity in observing a class that did a Socratic Seminar on a book they read, the Ss ran the class with the teacher observing, conversations were great between students and I felt lots of learning took place. It was a pleasure to see. #formativechat
A1- I teach littles so we keep our instructional periods short and sweet. We incorporate as much movement and tactile experiences as we can. And when all else fails- break into song! #formativechat
Q1: Stage one of the learning process is about attention. What resources or strategies can we use to capture and maintain student engagement? #formativechat#beintentional
A1 - Have mentioned before bu relationships at core of capturing and maintaining engagement. Read you class it's interesting how somethings work with different dynamics. Put yourself in Ss shoes. Change things up Use humour positively. #formativechat
Q1: Stage one of the learning process is about attention. What resources or strategies can we use to capture and maintain student engagement? #formativechat#beintentional
A1- Get students up and moving! Make assignments game-like, and turn monotonous memorization into chants or songs. Tap into your visual, auditory, and kinesthetic learners. #formativechat#beintentional
Q1: Stage one of the learning process is about attention. What resources or strategies can we use to capture and maintain student engagement? #formativechat#beintentional
Hi all! I teach 6th grade science in PA. what King wanted to add, but didnโt have enough char.- If you canโt crawl, you try and fire a hamstring on command. besides-sometimes crawling is more diff. than walking, depending on injury. ๐#deepthoughtsbykristensevinsky#formativechat
So great for them to move, spend so much time sitting, active learning is better for sure, and I am sure they love your classes :) #formativechat#4OCFpln
A1: Stage One is to get to know each and every child as the unique person they are. Spend time to know their hopes and dreams, what they love to do, about their family. Build a sense of belonging by building the relationships. #formativechat
Yes I am always asking them for feedback on how I am doing and how I can better support them. What do they need, how do they like to learn/practice math, etc. #formativechat
A1: This is why the connection piece of a minilesson is essential. Learners need (and deserve!) to know why things matter and make connections to their own lives and prior work. Providing relevance and context makes a world of difference. #formativechat
A1 - creating a real life type problem or role playing situation where it feels like it matters helps kids zone in. It's a way to raise the stakes in a fun way. #formativechat
Yes! Student ownership is something that we all need to do our best to encourage. The world is too big for the teacher to be the only driving force in the classroom. #formativechat
A1- start out with something crazy to grab attention. Keep whole group instr. short and give a few intermissions. ๐ spend more time allowing them to play and explore, discovering things for themselves, while walking around discussin with them. #formativechat
A1-for getting student attention at the beginning of the lesson, anything that causes them to observe, form connections, and make predictions on their own is typically the most engaging. Spark curiosity and let them be interested! #formativechat
A1: We have seen an incredible shift to some true engagement in our 2nd year of 1 to 1. This post has some of our favorite engagement tools being used in our classrooms. https://t.co/Asd5hf7ADu#formativechat#beintentional
A1: When working with MS students they love to know how they will apply the information to real life situations. So usually I like to introduce a topic by ways it can be used in life #formativechat
A1: There are culture-building activities so everyone in your class feels like they have a sense of place, feel like others know who they are, and who has similar interests. Create a culture that encourages risk-taking, unlearning, relearning together. #formativechat
A1: Hook Ss by sparking their curiosity. Show them interesting objects, ask big open questions & donโt give them the answers, encourage their questions, engage them in hands-on learning & opportunities to explore & work together & share their ideas with the world #formativechat
Great point! I've been reading a lot about how important telling stories is to learning. I think we sometimes lose site of this as we focus on content and shiny new tools. #formativechat
A1: When working with MS students they love to know how they will apply the information to real life situations. So usually I like to introduce a topic by ways it can be used in life #formativechat
Q2: Stage two of the learning process is about encoding. #StudentVoice has become a powerful tool to engage students in the learning process. How can we best use student voice to help students encode new learning experiences? #formativechat#beintentional
And donโt be afraid to take those โtoolsโ anywhere! My Ss use our iPads everywhere and then tools like @Flipgrid@padlet@Seesaw to share their learning broadly #formativechat

@nathan_stevens, @WickedEdTech, @Flipgrid, @padlet, @Seesaw
A1~ continued...
~we have a class song list with their favorite songs and we often play them very loudly for a few seconds at start of activity to get them pumped & excited #bigfanfavorite with the #room44pride littles ๐
#formativechat
A1: #formativechat Making sure students are interested. One of the ways that I keep student engagement is TBL. Providing movement with their language and topics.
A1 The most important technique for getting and maintaining student engagement is having topics that are interesting to the students. Have the students choose topics, given them choices, and be flexible while maintaining your learning targets, goals, & objectives. #formativechat
Q2: Stage two of the learning process is about encoding. #StudentVoice has become a powerful tool to engage students in the learning process. How can we best use student voice to help students encode new learning experiences? #formativechat#beintentional
I also love using hanging hashtags from @ELLevationED Students look at an image that captures the dayโs learning and they creat hashtags that depict their predictions about what they will learn #formativechat
A2: the #inquiry process! I asked open ended Qs with no one right answer...I took them through 4 different framework/models to spark their thinking, wonder, and curiosity. I got it started with a visual, video, artifact, tweet, or article, etc.. #formativechat
A2 Student voice promotes ownership and interest. If we include these in the learning process, relevance and meaning making will increase #FormativeChat#4ocfpln
Q2: Stage two of the learning process is about encoding. #StudentVoice has become a powerful tool to engage students in the learning process. How can we best use student voice to help students encode new learning experiences? #formativechat#beintentional
A2: Encourage students to keep a journal and collect evidence and artifacts that demonstrate the process of what they are learning as they learn. Have Ss ask peers for ongoing feedback "I like, I wonder" ideas #formativechat
A2: Student voice makes them feel that they have ownership of the views that they express. When students feel confident, they are more likely to take risks and push their thinking in new ways. Online publishing tools allows students to show off to a wider audience. #formativechat
Provocations are so important. I have been loving using fiction books as a provocation to solving a STEM problem this year... the younger Ss were super engaged in this #formativechat
A2: model asking good Qs; they need to learn what differentiates a surface level Q vs. a deep level Q. Develop their skills THRU the content. #formativechat
A2: ensure learning is global - get them to connect and communicate w/ other classes in the school, district, province/state, country, and other countries w/ diverse perspectives and thinkers. #formativechat
If I ask students how they would like to practice and prep for a test, then I will act on it. Last week I was observed doing just that, 8 total stations (3 tech, 2 group, 2 partner, 1 solo scavenger hunt) all Ss given choice in what/how they practiced. #formativechat
A2: let them demonstrate and showcase their learning on a global scale - have them do a YT video, conduct a Twitter chat, post pics on IG, blog, use Flipgrid and other tools to get their voices out there. #formativechat
A2: I saw others share @Flipgrid as a way to share their voice. Think about using it by sharing the UN @SDGs and have them collaborate using the #designthinking process to come up with ideas around any of @TheGlobalGoals#formativechat
A2: Iโve found using a digital tools like @Seesaw in conjunction with apps like @Flipgrid & @padlet a fabulous way for Ss to share their learning to a community & then come back to that later. Ss can also share this with families. It helps build their โvoiceโ #formativechat
In reply to
@WickedEdTech, @Seesaw, @Flipgrid, @padlet
A2- I try not to lose my intention for learning in the "required" format. Do I care how they show me what they know? Often, no. This gives choice and allows the focus to be on the learning. Also, I give students as much leadership as possible in every situation #formativechat
A2: Encourage students to keep a journal and collect evidence and artifacts that demonstrate the process of what they are learning as they learn. Have Ss ask peers for ongoing feedback "I like, I wonder" ideas #formativechat
A2: I have my Ss reflect on their learning process in their interactive notebooks. I have them reflect on their errors too, and ask them what they could have done differently. I even have them share different strategies to solve too. This is for my math classes. #formativechat
A2 Provide opportunities for students to explain their learning, share it, and discuss obstacles with peers. I like to use @flipgrid videos for this. Reflection and collaboration becomes part of the routine. #formativechat
A2-Celebrate and help make connections with attempts in learning. Try to maximize the attempts by allowing student voice in how the attempts are presented and explored. Use student voice to provide ownership opportunities. #formativechat
Q2: Stage two of the learning process is about encoding. #StudentVoice has become a powerful tool to engage students in the learning process. How can we best use student voice to help students encode new learning experiences? #formativechat#beintentional
A2: Agencyโvoice, choice, and ownershipโis vital. Without it, we don't have true learning. Ss could still simply be going through the motions because they โhave to.โ We must provide an environment where Ss are authors of their own learning. https://t.co/pmUGEDW5dx#formativechat
A2a: I have been delving more into using @playcraftlearn with my Ss. They love this and I have found that this platform not only engages Ss, but provides a place to learn/create/design with others in a collaborative world. I want to use this more in 2019 #formativechat
A2- so much can be said on this! Before allowing too much choice (I'm with littles) I find it even more important to start with HOW we learn and to begin thinking about our thinking so that Ss have words to describe their thinking. #formativechat
Q2: Stage two of the learning process is about encoding. #StudentVoice has become a powerful tool to engage students in the learning process. How can we best use student voice to help students encode new learning experiences? #formativechat#beintentional
we need to use tech purposefully to engage Ss to take #socialaction and become social change agents...give them the confidence and tools to via meaningful learning experiences. #formativechat
A2 (2) From there I move into teaching Ss ways they can help advocate for what works best for them and HOW to know if it is truly working. It doesn't matter if we allow voice or choice if Ss don't know what they are thinking, how to express it and #formativechat
A2 (3) and how to monitor the effectiveness of the learning choices they are making. We really have to do a better job of scaffolding this process. #formativechat
A2: Student voice allows us to hear what ss want and need. How will we know if we donโt ask them? Hamstrings (almost) fire when PTs listen, too. ๐๐๐However, ss need to feel safe comm needs since they may have been trained to come in and do what is asked. #formativechat
I think itโs important to not always showcase the โbest, most polishedโ product, but to share the messiness of learning. A digital portfolio allows others to share in the โjourneyโ of learning, not just the destination #formativechat
A2~
~having Ss teach younger peers is a great way to build community, empower our youngest learners in leadership skills, & lends itself to high investment in their own learning & growth & that of others
#formativechat
Q3: The final two stages are storage and retrieval. How can we best challenge students to retrieve what they know and apply it to new learning experiences? #formativechat#beintentional
A2: As a unit progresses itโs good to have students pose and write their own inquiry questions. I use @PearDeck for this which informs me exactly what each individual student wants to explore further and brings them into the learning process. #formativechat
Ss really shine when they are given choice - donโt they! I love saying to my Ss they can use any tool (we use iPads/apps) available to share what they know. Their eyes really light up and they produce amazing things! #formativechat
A3- Again I start with scaffolding the whole meta-cognitive piece. As adults we assume littles know how to think about their thinking. They need so much practice in order to strengthen those skills We have to prime before we paint! #formativechat
Q3: The final two stages are storage and retrieval. How can we best challenge students to retrieve what they know and apply it to new learning experiences? #formativechat#beintentional
A3: I think about their prior learning experiences. I have them recall vocab words from prior years, & brainstorm what they can remember. Have them talk about the characteristics that can also be associated with a new topic by recalling information already learned. #formativechat
A3: Frequent and varied formative assessments combined with frequent opportunities for students to reflect on learning experiences are essential in my classroom. Here is my reflection on a recent formative PD experience. https://t.co/69O4XiPxWU#formativechat#beintentional
Yes! Authentic audiences are extemely important!
โWhen students know that others will see their work, they want it to be good. When it's just for the teacher, they want it to be good enough.โ -Rushton Hurley. #formativechat
A2: Student voice makes them feel that they have ownership of the views that they express. When students feel confident, they are more likely to take risks and push their thinking in new ways. Online publishing tools allows students to show off to a wider audience. #formativechat
A3 Have SS built on prior knowledge to achieve new learning. I think of it in terms of language. First you learn the letters of the alphabet, then you put them together to make words while working on pronunciation. The words become sentences, & then paragraphs. #formativechat
A3: We must empower students with skillsโcritical thinking, collaboration, research, reflectionโthey can transfer and use in various contexts, content areas, and learning experiences. We are not after memorization nor compliance; we are after lifelong learning. #formativechat
I love this idea. Both the older and younger Ss love it and itโs such an amazing strategy for building confidence of the Ss who are teaching others. You canโt explain it well if you donโt know it well! #formativechat
A3: Classwide peer tutoring allows students to become teachers. It enables students to retrieve information that they learned and teach their peers using their own voice. Students self-monitor for mastery of the content. #formativechat
A3: they have to constantly reflect; they should have an online portfolio and self-assess against learning goals and success criteria. Model making connections; have them engage in discourse, and expose them to a variety of literature. #formativechat
A3 Learning needs to be done in context, so there is more to hang it on for the future.Fractions matter when cooking, adding matters when measuring costumes, research matters for publishing something the town. Then you have skills in your pocket to take out again #formativechat
Q3: The final two stages are storage and retrieval. How can we best challenge students to retrieve what they know and apply it to new learning experiences? #formativechat#beintentional
A3: If students capture evidence, artifacts, and keep a journal as they learn, they can retrieve the appropriate evidence when they need it. They can store and retrieve resources, videos, their voice, and more they collected in an ePortfolio. #formativechat#rethink_learning
Ss really shine when they are given choice - donโt they! I love saying to my Ss they can use any tool (we use iPads/apps) available to share what they know. Their eyes really light up and they produce amazing things! #formativechat
A3: I believe this is part of the โartโ of teaching. Little easier for us math folk to connect knowledge bc of how the material always builds on itself. But difficult to find time to retrieve and extend thinking in prior topics with our enormous curriculum. #formativechat
Thank you my friends for a great learning experience tonight. I appreciate all you do to support teachers and learners. I hope everyone has a wonderful holiday break and a great start to 2019! #formativechat
Yes! Context can activate so much more in terms of prior knowledge and connect it to so many more points for future reference. Teaching in isolation is so last year (insert valley girl hair flip). Teaching in context is so hot is(whateves the cool girls do) #formativechat
A huge thank you to everyone tonight in #formativechat , thanks for a great year of conversation! And thank you @WickedEdTech for awesome questions to push our thinking!
A3- Provide mastery and #formative opportunities and get them to make and share a learning artifact. Create portfolios. Provide opportunities like genius hour. Promote learning cycle and #growthmindset#formativechat
Q3: The final two stages are storage and retrieval. How can we best challenge students to retrieve what they know and apply it to new learning experiences? #formativechat#beintentional
A3 - Ask them questions. Provide as many opportunities as possible for students to retrieve information f memory.
Itโs called retrieval practice. Iโve written about this here:
https://t.co/q4op87D6Qv#formativechat
I love that you are helping students drive their own learning. I love classrooms where the teacher is not the source of all knowledge. Thanks for sharing! #formativechat
A3: Iโve conducted action research on content retention. Giving Ss the opportunity to practice skills that engage them in acquiring content& applying increases retention of content and the ability to know where to look for the answers when they forget #formativechat
