Welcome to #MTedchat! Our topic tonight is “Connecting and Collaborating to Meet the Needs of the Whole Child!” Please take a moment to introduce yourself: name, role, and location.
This quote drives my motivation to keep the whole child the focus of our profession: "You are the sum total of everything you've ever seen, heard, eaten, smelled, been told, forgot – it’s all there. Everything influences each of us..." #mtedchat#atplc
Q1: What are some informal ways that you connect or collaborate to meet the needs of individual students or address trends across the learning community? #MTedchat

A1 I always enjoyed car-line duty; I found it a great time to further relationships and get to know what the Ss were interested in. Then, I could bring that into my lessons. #mtedchat
Q1: What are some informal ways that you connect or collaborate to meet the needs of individual students or address trends across the learning community? #MTedchat
A1: I think some of the best collaboration we do is when we walk out of our room to ask a peer, "Have you experienced this? How did you handle it." Asking the questions shows trust and the desire to do better. #mtedchat
Q1: What are some informal ways that you connect or collaborate to meet the needs of individual students or address trends across the learning community? #MTedchat
A1: I am constantly trying to make connections with Ss, hallway chat, random question while walking by, etc. Professionally, I talk to colleagues and bounce ideas off of them all the time. #MTedchat

I appreciate that time of day too... Both as the day begins and as we are wrapping up. Definitely love the instant application in the classroom. #mtedchat
As far as informal with other teachers, car-line allowed for that too 😉 You get to talk to other teachers and their Ss and really reflect on the work that's happening in the grade level #mtedchat

A1: When I taught K I was at Beartooth, which is an open concept school. As a T, I LOVED this environment for collaborating, learning from my colleagues, & informally spending time in their classrooms & w some of my former Ss. #MTedchat

Hey everyone, cold season has gotten the best of me this year. Saving my brain power for tomorrow, but hopefully I can make next week’s chat. It’s been awhile. I miss “seeing” you all! #MTedchat
Q2: Describe one systemic strategy used by your school/district or that you have learned about that strategically connects educators together to collaborate to seek solutions. #MTedchat
A2 For the past 2 yrs all middle school SciTs take a block of time to collaborate & articulate one time a quarter There have been many good benefits of this practice #MTedchat
A1: In Billings we have a PLC model to encourage grade level teaching partners to share data & strategies. It’s a work in progress but I think pockets of schools in our district are doing a good job & having some great collaborative conversations to improve Ss learning.#MTedchat
Q2: Describe one systemic strategy used by your school/district or that you have learned about that strategically connects educators together to collaborate to seek solutions. #MTedchat
A2. I have worked with many districts that use Peer Coaches for one on one collaboration and as a catalyst to make collaboration in learning communities effective. #mtedchat
A2 Two of the schools I visit each week have designated grade level PLC time that are mostly teacher led. One school has completely redesigned their literacy block using this set time for collaboration #MTedchat
Q2: Describe one systemic strategy used by your school/district or that you have learned about that strategically connects educators together to collaborate to seek solutions. #MTedchat
A2 My district is working on building it's capacity for equity mindset and action. We have equity champions, who are required to do continuing education. When they get together, it's good stuff. #mtedchat
A2: We have a staff meeting wrap-around conversation where each teacher shares a student specific story.. One that they want to celebrate or seek support with. These are my fave weekly convos... as admin, I learn SO much about everyone which enables me to support. #mtedchat

We keep in contact with our alum as well. This is very helpful especially because we serve those with learning differences. It is very interesting to watch them in high school and college. #mtedchat

Do you find the meeting-time to be effective? I have been a part of both...highly effective and jumping through hoops... Leadership and structure help so much #mtedchat
😁 They participate in a cohort of learning and engaging in material. At the end, they complete a project to receive their "badge" Then, do the continuing education #mtedchat
I agree. When schools are creative and flexible with their time collaboration becomes possible. @cristama has implemented some powerful time management strategies to give her Ts time to collaborate. #mtedchat

I was SO fortunate to have time as an in-residence district instructional coach. Loved that it was not limited by content area or age (PK-12). Hope I was able to share as much as I learned through the process. We did a lot of supporting peer-observation and lesson study #mtedchat
Q3: As educators, we focus on academic growth and trends but need to expand our view to the whole child. What are some ways you engage in dialogue and planning regarding student mental/physical health, nutrition, and environmental issues? #MTedchat
I have too. I think having an agenda and a designated facilitator can help with that. Also establishing those group norms to stay positive and productive. #MTedchat
A2. Work with a school in Flagstaff that encourages teachers to "Dare to share" in weekly staff meetings. Really powerful tool to encourage collaboration. #mtedchat
Why thank you ;) I offer the staff the time and resources I always knew I needed as a classroom teacher. #mtedchat That is a priority for our building.

I agree. When we first started we had these forms we had to fill out & it definitely felt very hoop jumpy. I spent more time trying to figure out what to write on the form than participating in convos. I think this has improved a better record keeping methods. #MTedchat
Les, meet my friend Kammy ;) I was able to work side-by-side with her in a variety of ways during my time as both a classroom teacher and coach. She is a great teacher and mentor to others. ;) #mtedchat
A3 Those issues often come up during our kid talks during our team meetings We are lucky enough to have common time each day to talk Ss, their needs, and how we can better serve them #MTedchat

A3 when I was in the classroom my day began with a morning meeting where we could share feelings etc. I also had a place they could leave me private notes if they needed to. Used 1:1 conferencing during workshop to check in about all things not just content #MTedchat
Q3: As educators, we focus on academic growth and trends but need to expand our view to the whole child. What are some ways you engage in dialogue and planning regarding student mental/physical health, nutrition, and environmental issues? #MTedchat
Yes! If the only way Ts have collaborated in past is to share what worksheet they’re doing tomorrow...giving them a set time isn’t going to change that. Good PLC practices need to be modeled by strong leaders. #MTedchat
A3: I always found it SO helpful to send survey home to parents first week of the schoolyear. Parents had opp to share their hopes & fears for their child. SO much came out about both child and Ps feelings about themselves and school in general. Helped me be proactive #mtedchat
Q3: As educators, we focus on academic growth and trends but need to expand our view to the whole child. What are some ways you engage in dialogue and planning regarding student mental/physical health, nutrition, and environmental issues? #MTedchat
Nothing comprehensive, but collectively: nutrition - cooking projects. I always have a veggie one after my (non)fast food lesson. Whole child - build projects usually reveal untradtional/sit-in-seat-skills. They eat lunch in to room so we connect quite a bit. #mtedchat
A3 last year my school held data chats that focused on the student vs the numbers. Teachers talked about what they knew about the student. Social Worker, guidance counselors, and others were St the meetings too, so we could get supports in place. 1/? #mtedchat
This is a great example of communication and collaboration. Too often individual student issues stay isolated to the classroom safe-space. We need to share with a team to ensure we are offering proper resources and services. Helps to see larger trends. #mtedchat
I LOVE this!! Thanks for sharing! Food is a huge part of community building. We have breakfast in the classroom, but teacher monitored grade level band lunches... Allows great time for connecting with students #mtedchat
I'm not in the classroom this yr & that principal changed schools. So unfortunately, I don't think that process continued but I thought it was really powerful. ... Kids go through so much & you might not know it. The book I was reading (The Glass Castle) speaks to this #mtedchat
Q4: What are some resources (websites, books, people, organizations) you turn to to for help or support in meeting the needs of all students (consider topics like cultural responsiveness, equity, students w/special needs, gifted, transient)? #MTedchat
Got an email from an alum last week. He grad'd Valedictorian of his small high school. He's moved on to new hobbies. He's driving and going to a community college. Got an A in algebra after struggling for yrs in math. Sent video & pics. He was so proud. #mtedchat
A3- I worked in a district where monthly team meetings always included the principal. He was instrumental in the discussions, as he knew so much about all the Ss after following and being a part of every grade-level team meeting through the years, and he kept notes! #mtedchat
A3: This is a huge talking point in our district this year. Ss can’t learn when basic mental/physical needs aren’t met. We need to acknowledge this & put plans in place to support these Ss & Ts but meanwhile we look at data & Ts are held accountable to test scores. 😩 #MTedchat
Q3: As educators, we focus on academic growth and trends but need to expand our view to the whole child. What are some ways you engage in dialogue and planning regarding student mental/physical health, nutrition, and environmental issues? #MTedchat
A4: The Teaching Tolerance website is FULL of amazing resources... My current faves! Check out these K-12 Teaching Strategies https://t.co/s9joOVA1qP I just shared with staff and they found SO many tools to integrate into the curriculum. #mtedchat
Q4: What are some resources (websites, books, people, organizations) you turn to to for help or support in meeting the needs of all students (consider topics like cultural responsiveness, equity, students w/special needs, gifted, transient)? #MTedchat
Q5: Most systems model some form of Response to Intervention or Multi-Tiered Systems of Support. What forms of data do you find the most valuable when identifying priorities? #MTedchat
I also REALLY find the @ascd and @edutopia resources for educating the #wholechild VERY useful. Many readings to help others understand why we need to look beyond just academics. #mtedchat
A4: Equity, gratitude, poverty, helping: I use 's documentary Living on a Dollar. It's on Netflix. They have a segmented series on youtube that's really good. NY college kids go the Guatemala to live on $1 a day. #mtedchat
A5: Data-driven priorities, for me, come from when patterns emerge. It can be a pattern of late attendance resulting in low self-esteem in math (evidenced by attitude and assessment data) or it can be a child who slumps sadly through the door daily. Data is everywhere. #mtedchat
Q5: Most systems model some form of Response to Intervention or Multi-Tiered Systems of Support. What forms of data do you find the most valuable when identifying priorities? #MTedchat
A5: As a dist we are working on common grade level assessments to add assist convos in buildings when Ts are trying to determine which Ss need which interventions. Trick is identifying those indicators of success & making assessments that properly gauges Ss success. #MTedchat

Adding that to my list as well!!! Our kids really get that. Economically impacted area that doesn't have a store... So many inequities to both urban and more economically advantaged peers. #mtedchat
A5: I love this... Blending the benchmark data from the common assessments with holistic formative classroom data can be SO powerful. The conversation that occurs over student work examples is where the magic happens. #mtedchat

Q6: Education is a uniquely human profession. What traits do you find most important when collaborating or encouraging collaboration with colleagues, administration, families, and students? #MTedchat
Def a worthy conversation. We discontinued STARS subscription this year. We had a hard time truly identifying alignment to Common Core Standards, esp w/multiple choice assess platform. We use common formative T developed assessments, Smarter Balanced Interims instead #mtedchat
A6 Validation: Parents, students, peers need to feel like a valid part of the educational process By simply being a good listeners & communicating w/people respectfully we can validate their thoughts & ideas #MTedchat
A6: Some level of vulnerability helps... we all need help sometimes. Compassion and empathy... As humans, we all have highs and lows both in and out of the classroom... Trust... #mtedchat
