I'm so excited to guest moderate tonight! Growth mindset work has become an important part of my classroom community. 1st question in just a minute :-) #1stchat
A1: "People believe that their most basic abilities can be developed through dedication and hard work—brains and talent are just the starting point." Anything is possible! #growthmindset#1stchat
A1: Growth mindset in my classroom is helping all my ss to know and believe they can do anything with time, patience and practice #1stchat We are always learning!!
In a growth mindset, students believe improvement comes from dedication and hard work. Regardless of talent or brains, these students are motivated to learn and end up being much more successful #1stchat

A1: So much fun in 1st! They think they can do anything. Love to keep that attitude! Our motto...keep on trying even if your body and your brain get tired! #1stchat
I changed this year from "practice makes perfect" to "practice makes progress." We will never be perfect... but we will also be making progress towards a goal! #1stchat#growthmindset

I love this image because I think staying positive and optimistic plays a huge role, not only on how we learn, but on how we live our lives. We should encourage ourselves to get better and take every mistake or failure as a learning lesson! #1stchat
Q2: How do you teach students to have a growth mindset in the classroom? #1stchat Sorry for the delay, my husband thought it was a good time to reset the wifi ;-)
A1 growth mindset is leaving your comfort zone and taking those steps. Sry familiar with that as I sub in classes other than kinder, my home turf #1stchat
#growthmindset is not just for the educational environment, but for our every day lives. We are really capable of anything when we have the right #Mindset#1stchat

A2: I talk all the time during lessons and direct teach in class meetings. I pick a trait, like the power of yet, perserverance, empathy, flexiblity, optimism and read books, role play, videos #1stchat
A2 Let students know that stuff is challenging for you too. Let them see mistakes you make and how you try again. Authentic situations/modeling lets them know “trying” is the mindset #1stchat
A2 We focus on celebrating growth, not the product. I tell my students how they were in Sep a lot. They really don't remember much about where they started. Lol #1stchat
A2: Role Model, practice, and reminders. We can't just "teach" this one day and then not follow-up or follow-through the next day/week/month/year. We need to SHOW how important this process is! #growthmindset#1stchat
A2 I think you can teach students to have a growth mindset by emphasizing that learning takes time, but it is extremely rewarding in the end. Constantly remind them of the progress they're making and how they should be proud of themselves #1stchat
A2. I model it. Talk about my experiences. We discuss times that they’ve had difficulties and how they could demonstrate a growth mindset. I also use @ClassDojo for their great mindset lessons. #1stchat
the Power of Yet is amazing in 1st grade. Students are learning how to read and understand complex math problems... they can really relate to this! #1stchat#growthmindset
A2 Model what it looks like. When I sketch for a piece of writing, I announce that I'm giving it my best and I keep going. It doesn't have to be perfect. #1stchat
I think it is extremely important for students to see that teachers make mistakes too because it makes them not feel as bad about themselves. No one is perfect, so it's unrealistic for teachers to set those standards #1stchat

A2 I think it's important to reward and celebrate the progress that students are making. This boosts their confidence encourages them to continue working hard #1stchat
This is a goal I have... for students to create goals! I'm in the habit of doing it for them. Self goals make it more meaningful when they are reached! #1stchat#growthmindset
A3: class dojo has videos on youtube that my kids love. His name is Mojo and they work through growth mindset, also love several youtube videos- The power of yet, etc. #1stchat
A3 When one of my students said he couldn't make something, I responded, "Make it Peter-ish" and off he went. (name changed to protect the innocent.) :) #1stchat
I have found our morning meeting time is a great time to teach growth mindset. It helps build our community as we learn together and accept our mistakes #1stchat
A4: more aware of re engaging with material so ss have more chances to shift their thinking. Thinking about the power of YET. That word wasn’t in my teaching vocabulary 5 years ago. #1stchat
A4. It has definitely changed my thinking in teaching and all I do. Growing up, I had a fixed mindset. It wasn’t until I started teaching did I learn about this. It has affected all I do. I’ve even taught my 76 year old dad about this!!! #1stchat
A4 I am not a teacher yet, but the growth mindset is something that has greatly impacted me as a student. I am a huge perfectionist, so it has always been hard for me to take criticism, but I have learned that the most amount of growth actually comes from mistakes! #1stchat
A4: As adults we normally just go through the motions sometimes, but I truly feel I have become a better educator when I talk out growth mindset with the Ss. I am more in touch with the power of Yet :-) #1stchat
A4 I look at teaching and learning filled with so many possibilities. The focus has become on what kids can do, their strengths and teach to them instead of focusing on their challenges/struggles #growthmindset#1stchat
A4: I always shared my mistakes (I make a lot so hard not to) but now I share more about what I'm reading and trainings I'm doing to show them how we are always learning at any age and always striving to become better #1stchat
I invited some of my past Oakland Univ. students to join us tonight. We took a quiz in class to test our own growth mindset. I was surprised at some of my own answers coming out #1stchat I can do better too!

Everyone is "smart" but what can we do to improve? I think we can all help each other grow because someone's strength is another person's weakness! #1stchat
Do you all also see why strategies you have trusted work now...you see the science of growth mindset at work. I see that with metacognitive strategies..exercising those neurons. #1stchat
Self assessment and personal goal setting plays a key role in my room. You need to have a growth mindset to be able to see where you need to grow. #1stchat
I've had some very bright students who had difficulty recovering from making a mistake and would completely fall apart. I'm very transparent with my mistakes to model how we learn and grow from them. #1stchat
A5: The more you use that language and help them to see it, they begin to recognize. They will share it as they recognize it in themselves, or encourage it in others. We do celebrate it! #1stchat
A5: Celebrations occur both in whole group but also one-on-one. Each student has their own goal and each goal needs to be celebrated. As teachers, we will see the change in mindset. <3 #1stchat
A5: This comes into play after my Ss share their Makerspace creations. They talk about their issues with the creation process and show how they were successful (or not). The other Ss add input and share positive feedback #1stchat
A5 with the use of their own data binders and moving up levels with many diff challenges. The power of “yet.” “Yet” is a word used all the time. We celebrate each other’s accomplishments daily. #1stchat
A5 I do a lot of STEM challenges and debriefing afterwords. Successes are celebrated as a group, challenges are discussed for future growth. I do have an individual meeting w students who had difficulties to set goals. #1stchat
I love it! We share a lot of our learning with one another with a similar process. Always looking at want went well, what we'd change, and how we might get there next time. The power of YET! #1stchat
A5: my ss have been so good this year and they recognize each other all the time and they know when they've overcome something that has been hard. The are a loud but such a sweet and encouraging class this year. #1stchat
A5. I’ve heard it in their conversations while at stations. Occasionally I will hear, “But we can’t quit. We have to have a growth mindset and try again.” I’ve also heard, “If plan ’a’ doesn’t work, there’s plan ‘b’”. They are getting it. 😊 #1stchat
I think working in groups is a great way to establish a growth mindset. If something is difficult for an individual, they will become discouraged and want to give up, but working with peers can keep them motivated! #1stchat
A5 When my students do a self-assessment and are very honest about their level of understanding they are demonstrating a growth mindset. They don't pretend to understand when they really don't. #1stchat
A5- we have been making weekly goals and reflecting on them every Friday. Ss look forward to the reflection time and are very thoughtful on their responses.#1stchat

In all honesty everyone here #1stchat challenges me and really keeps me focused on my growth mindset. Pushing me to grow and try new things. You also are a great support full of ideas and encouragement. Thanks!!!
I’m joining #1stchat super late but wanted to take part in the awesome task presented at the end. @jenbearden thank you for pushing me to grow in my thinking about kids - I love thae way you challenge me to be better for our kids! #growthmindset
@KZombo Thanks for being so patient with me with ITS learning. You are always positive with me even on the 10th time showing me how to do things #1stchat
So true and I just thought that sitting in a room filled with students who engage you as you engage them, what a more powerful growth mindset than that, I don’t know #1stchat
Engaging in #1stchat has been extremely beneficial for my preparation towards becoming a future teacher. Hearing thoughts, ideas, and success stories from people who are already working in the field has been so enlightening!

A6 My PLN who are there when I wonder and notice. When I question and learn. So many. Especially my friends that I get to join in chats. Thank you #1stchat
