The #TXLchat provides a forum for Texas librarians (but not limited to Texas librarians) to create collaborative connections, share educational resources, and foster life-long learning.
We're taking a look at this GREAT quote by Shirley Chisholm and discussing how it applies to our work. Remember to use A1 and #txlchat on all replies tonight.
A1 I think this is important to us as so many people outside the world of libraries don't understand what we can bring to the table. Lots are still working with outdated ideas/models. #txlchat

A1 since others in education world don't always know what librarians do, we have to be sure to include ourselves & show how we add value to school/district/education #txlchat
A1: Few people fully understand what a school librarian brings to the table today & most won't fully "get it" based on your "elevator pitch." You can't wait to be invited - you must be proactive and insist on a seat at the table. #txlchat

A1 Librarians aren’t always (usually? ever?) the first thought of administrators when it comes to looking for other voices. We have to be willing to vocalize and step up to assume stronger advocacy roles. #txlchat
A1: We are our best advocates! Since our role is so multi-faceted, we are the best ones to explain what we do. We need to do just that at the table of the decision-makers, because we are a terrific asset! #txlchat
A1 so often Librariansoffer Resources, tie-ins, connection, collaboration, shared information to what goes on on the campus, the more we know the better these work #txlchat
A1. If we don’t invite ourselves to the leadership table and bring important topics to discuss, we can’t complain about lack of inferest and support. #txlchat
A1: What a great visual from Shirley Chisholm! When you bring a folding chair, you can move it around where you need it most. It's message is portable and adaptable just like our voice #txlchat
A1: When you take a seat at the table, you're not there to ask for what you want to take away, but rather to show them what you bring to the table. #txlchat

A1: being the only person on the campus that does what we do means others may not advocate for our programs bc they don't always know what happens the scenes. #txlchat
Good evening #txlchat from Barbara, school counselor and author of What's Under Your Cape? A1: The library is the core of the school; you MUST be at the table b/c you are an essential at every meal. Put yourself at the table so you can advocate, connect, share.
Q2 I've been part of the school leadership team on 3 campuses where that was previously unheard of. Gave me INVALUABLE opportunities to collaborate on department and campus initiatives. #txlchat
A2 Joined Instructional Leadership Team this year. Help plan PD, get involved w walkthroughs & feedback opportunities, understand what admin are facing/planning/thinking so I can be a go-between w staff #txlchat
A2: I am part of our Campus Improvement team, and I chair the reading committee. I always ask to be part of vertical alignment teams also #collaborationforthewin#txlchat
I am a part of the Vanguard Team within my district. This team specializes in learning cutting edge edtech and determining how to spread that knowledge within our district. #txlchat
A2 I became part of my district tech committee and have access to streaming on public access. My first step to move to the media center from the business classroom #txlchat
Q3 In addition to discussions/conversations think about what data you used to persuade people. How was this presented? Remember to reply using A3 and #txlchat
A2: I am a part of the Vanguard Team within my district. This team specializes in learning cutting edge edtech and determining how to spread that knowledge within our district. #txlchat
A2 #txlchat I’m currently part of our campus vision casting team. In my past district, I served on district level decision making teams. The librarian works with every department and all staff. Librarians should serve in these roles.
A2 I asked to be on ANY committee just to show I can be a resource pretty much in any capacity...even on the PTA “healthy lifestyle” committee! Ha! #txlchat
I explained to my principals what I could bring to the table. Tell them I'm listening with librarian POV that others may not recognize. Remind them I am teaching every student on campus. #txlchat
A1 Librarians aren’t always (usually? ever?) the first thought of administrators when it comes to looking for other voices. We have to be willing to vocalize and step up to assume stronger advocacy roles. #txlchat
A2 I'm on the district Advanced Academics committee which gives me the opportunity to promote library resources and programs that prepare Ss for college/career #txlchat
A2-I'm also involved in our Prof Learning Framework Committee-this allows me the chance to provide feedback on prof learning for librarians & other support positions #txlchat
A2 Continuous Campus Growth committee - analyzing campus data, able to share my perspectives from working w all students & teachers & not being a classroom teacher who might get offended by the observations made about the data #txlchat
A3: Carrying out my own vision of what I wanted to do as a librarian and making sure it was visible through social media has helped administrators know what can be possible within the library. #txlchat
A RT from #AASL17 - how many people in your school have the opportunity to meet every student - every educator - and become familiar with all of the curriculum? Yes, there's just one - YOU. You must become the fulcrum of the school - which requires a seat at the table. #txlchat
A2 Campus Early Literacy Committee; Site Based Decision Making Team; Technology Innovation Committee. Provides me the opportunity to see the District's vision and mission in a wider perspective; share trends I see on our campus, help with tech integration. #txlchat
#txlchat My principal was a former teacher colleague & asked me to join based on her previous work with me. So I guess setting a good example gets you noticed.
A1 you can't wait to be asked for seat at the table. Ask questions about table. Understand who sits at the table and what makes them tick. Relationships & conversations will stir so many opportunities even if they don't immediately get you a seat. Understand your 'why' #txlchat
A3: I started with one person, then that person talked about what I did for her class and test scores, and so on. Then a partnership was born and my voice is being heard more and more. #txlchat
A2 I now serve as a campus technology leader - a 1st for our campus - and this is my second year on our campus instructional focus team with dept. chairs and campus academic leaders (on the team because I asked to be). #txlchat
A2-Being involved with PTA allows you the chance to build relationships w/parents. This gives them the chance for them to learn how you help Ss #txlchat
A2 I have recently been given a page in our community magazine. What an amazing way to promote all of the cool things going on in my school and library! #txlchat
A3 bring research (both quantitative & anecdotal); talk with others about their successes on committees & follow examples; be willing to take on the jobs others won't #txlchat
A3: (I had a lot to say for this question) Another way I got more involved was to send out a monthly @SmorePages newsletter. I put my ideas out there #txlchat
Start with the willing! @joycevalenza once told me she "doesn't water the rocks; no matter how much water you waste on them, they won't grow." Get a few "wins" with the teachers most eager to grow & celebrate their success - shout it from the rooftop. #txlchat
A3: I started with one person, then that person talked about what I did for her class and test scores, and so on. Then a partnership was born and my voice is being heard more and more. #txlchat
A4, My criteria for committees is that they have actual impact. All to often, their work gets buried and is inconsequential. Must fight cynicism! #txlchat
A4 First, I want to be interested in or passionate about what the committee does. Then I want to join ones where I think my talents will serve well. #txlchat
I sometimes con my way onto committees by offering to do some of the work. I'm o. The construction/bond committee because I can work a Gantt chart & no one else even knew what that was. #txlchat

#txlchat I have 2 admit I've been drowning this year. Parent/grandparent volunteers, PTA, & @becalzada have come to the rescue. Working behind the scenes & letting the library speak 4 itself.
A2 I am part of the Teaching, learning & Innovation district team. Another question to seek out: is curriculum & technology working hand-in-hand? In our district yes. Often times no, and they run in silos and don't marry their approaches. #bettertogether#txlchat
A4 Ok,aside from which ones have snacks, I try to choose the upbeat ones that look for ways to improve and help the most, but there really is no way to go wrong joining ANY committee you have passion for. #txlchat
A4 Which committees affect the campus as a whole; where can I make a difference; where can I learn the most to be of use to students & faculty #txlchat
A3 I think that my persuasion has been subtle; always available, always sharing what I learn, looking out for resources & practices to help Ts, Admin, Ps regardless of if it has to do with library services or not. Finding ways to impact schoolwide literacy. #txlchat
Last question of the evening. Think about what made your request easier for members to accept. What are your best tactics are there things we should avoid? Reply using A5 and #txlchat.
A4: Committees that discuss literacy, technology, research, information literacy, and the success of students are all great options for librarians. #txlchat
I also like to let my work do the talking, but somethings I get trumped by people that let their talk to their working! Best to strike a balance! #txlchat
A4 I volunteer for those that I think best align with my skill set/ highlight what a librarian can offer. Also those that allow me to stay informed and contribute to decision-making when possible. #txlchat
A4 sometimes I choose to NOT be on a committee because I know that I would end up being the leader & others need that experience. I choose to be a guide on the side #txlchat
#txlchat No committees this year. Just trying to keep my head above water. @librarian_tiff says to focus on 1 thing each year. I choose est a gr8 program 4 kids. The rest will fall into place.

A5 put yourself out there and even join committees you normally wouldn’t just to grow perspective and flex your talent to research topics for solutions #txlchat
A4 I like being part of committees where I can a) learn and b) contribute. Both are equally important. I also want to be part of a group where others might not expect me. #txlchat
A5 What are your strengths? What do you want to know more about? Who do you need/want as an ally? What committees will help you be a better librarian & serve your students & faculty? #txlchat
A5 I always go in with a servant leadership attitude. What can I do for your students? How can we partner to help the students? Teachers & Admin are swamped like we are. Let’s help each other! #txlchat
Great question! In the early days of EdTech, I found the answer was usually no. It's caused by thinking about tech for tech's sake, rather than focusing on the learning outcomes and only then on how tech can help achieve them. #txlchat
A2 I am part of the Teaching, learning & Innovation district team. Another question to seek out: is curriculum & technology working hand-in-hand? In our district yes. Often times no, and they run in silos and don't marry their approaches. #bettertogether#txlchat

A4: If at all possible say YES and volunteer for what will promote the library and yourself - Even if you have to ask @lenbryan25 how to do it #txlchat
A4 I volunteer for those that I think best align with my skill set/ highlight what a librarian can offer. Also those that allow me to stay informed and contribute to decision-making when possible. #txlchat
A5: Support school programs outside of the library...choir concerts, counselor-parent meetings, sports. Be visible. Show you care about the school community. Show what you can do inside your library and make it known how you can have an effect outside of your library. #txlchat
A5 You can approach it as a “fitting” or “tasting” - offer to join a committee but say that if it’s not ideal for the group or for you, then it’s not an obligation to stay. Don’t be afraid to admit it’s not a perfect fit. #txlchat
A5 Align your goals to your district or campus goals. Libraries support any initiative from attendance (safe space) to graduation rates (academic support) to dropout prevention (diverse collections & programs). We fit everywhere! #TXLchat

That's it folks!! I want to give a HUGE thanks to artist Hallie Heald for allowing us to use her beautiful illustration of Shirley Chisholm for tonight's #txlchat. Her beautiful work can be found here: https://t.co/zqqoxf98aL
Thank you so much for joining us tonight! And a big shouout to my #txlchat team @becalzada and @txlibraryguy. We hope you've taken away some nuggets to spread the awesome work you're doing in the library and beyond!
Oh my goodness! Student helpers r the BEST! I run centers in my library & the Library Helper Center is 1 of the kids favorites! Gives me time 4 1 on 1 instruction #txlchat

#txlchat You could make it part of your yearly goals & explain to your admin why this is important to you. Or ask to sit in on the meeting as an observer so you can see how it works. Or have a specific topic to bring to the meeting that gets your foot in the door.

Excellent point - how will your serving on a committee benefit you and your library program? You can't say yes to everything; proactively seek out the opportunities that matter most. #txlchat
A4: If at all possible say YES and volunteer for what will promote the library and yourself - Even if you have to ask @lenbryan25 how to do it #txlchat
Keep advocating for yourselves; you've got this #txlchat. If you don't already have this treasure, add it to your shelves soon! https://t.co/CnAFeAggfN
A5 Always be available, always look for opportunities to serve, these are opportunities to showcase the depth of your knowledge, abilities, and willingness to learn. #txlchat
A2 I am also on the District improvement committee which is really cool because not only is it comprised of staff, but there are community and parents. It's a great place to have a voice and a seat. #txlchat
Don't forget to tweet on the 17th to help promote/advocate for school libraries also! This month's theme is global learning. #txlchat#txasl#txaslleg#txasltalks
A4 as new employee to district I needed to get to know people. I found I could make myself available to membership so I could "learn the ropes." I could scale back or say no later. This also allowed me opportunity for informal chats about possible collaborations. #txlchat
I’m familiar with Tacky and was also thinking about Dream Big Little Pig by @kristiyamaguchi. Would love to have her do a Google Hangout with us! #txlchat
