Thank you for joining tonight. We are using the Q1/A1 format as we share. Please use the hashtag and be prepared for the Bellringer in a minute. #mdeschat#letslearn
Passing requires the demonstration of skills to meet the criteria for success whereas excelling means a student as demonstrated learning that surpasses the requirement. Schools encourage students to pass or meet the minimum requirement communicated by grades or a scale.#mdeschat
Student complain about their workload when there is not a clear understanding of the purpose of the activity and thus shapes their effort/attempt at passing. #mdeschat
A1: Help frame learning by establising a meaningful context with some predictability and challenges requiring Ss to build on requisite skills. mdeschat
The right mindset is critical! Thank you for the reminder Greg. How do you assess and develop a growthmindset in students encourage them to excel? #mdeschat
A1. Helping Ss meet standards requires scaffolding, posing questions where Ss have to think critically... as well as engaging, relevant instruction #mdeschat
Make it a part of the classroom lexicon. Peers motivating peers, T and S motivating one another. Using growth language. Allow for goal setting, reflection, celebration, and next steps. No time to put the car in park. #mdeschat
A1b. Deep thinking not always synonymous for meeting standards. Many have abilities cognitiveky yet lack access pr specialized insyruction to bridge the gap #mdeschat
Pass vs. excel is a similar comparison to manage vs. lead. To manage is to maintain. To lead is to advance. To pass is to do enough to get by. To excel is to exceed expectations, to go above and beyond. #mdeschat
Yes!!! Ss have cognitive abilities not always captured in the learning sequence or assessment and often fail as a result of inadequate conditions beyond their control. #mdeschat
If growth mindset is evident, Ss strive to excel, because they understand that point B isn't the final destination on the learning journey. There's always more to learn. #mdeschat
A2: Students who understand the value of performing to the best of their ability are willing to put forth the extra effort to pass, but excelling requires Ss to look beyond the learning activity and into the future. #mdeschat
A2. Most Ss strive to pass. There are some driven to excel. Sometimes harder to see in primary grades and is more prevalent as Ss get older andctake ownership of their education #mdeschat
A4: Teach Ss the format of summative assessments; build assessment literacy by sharing score reports and how the assessment data will be used for instruction and to determine instructional needs. #mdeschat
A4. Ss need to learn analysis (including critical rdg), discrimination (better vs best), justification/ explanation to "stand up" to standardized tests #mdeschat
Great points Denise. If standardized tests open doors/opportunities, we must embed peserverance and even teach the format of the tests for pacing. #mdeschat
