It’s deceptive when As are so overrepresented in affluent communities. Besides issues with what the test really measures, college readiness “points” cost money from someplace- AP exams, SAT/ACT, certification tests, college courses... Schools are not failing. Politics are. #txed
#txed Jerry Toups HS Math Tr from SW Houston suburbs. About to start my 29th year! #LOVEMYJOB Soon to be an author! So exciting. My book "The Story of Always Believe" will be coming out this fall!
Set goals and track them. Kids need to know where rhey need to go and how they are doing along the way. Student conferences will be one of the biggest changes at my campus. #TxEd
A1: Teachers can be facilitators of learning when they plan experiences in which students have ownership of the learning and are invested in the products they create. #txed
#txed A1 This chart illustrates the power of #peertutoring Last year my Ss were exceptional at peer tutoring. Spent most of my days walking my room LISTENING to my Ss teaching each other. RESULT... 90% 9TH GR ALGEBRA Students COMMENDED on Alg I STAAR #ProudTeacher
A1: Tell then it all starts with you. From the way your classroom looks, the way you look, it all sets the trgectory and your learning in your classroom. #TxEd
A1: Teachers can be facilitators of learning when they plan experiences in which students have ownership of the learning and are invested in the products they create. #txed
Q1: The best way to be a facilator, is to be deliberate & explicit during your planning and delivery of instruction. When students know what is expected of them, why something is important, & how to get tasks done...they will be independent! #txed
#txed A2 Your Ss APPRECIATE being heard and being able to give advice to others. ENCOURAGE this! Your relationships with the kids will have another dimension!
A1 Your lessons shouldn't involve you lecturing for long periods. Release control to student activities, projects, their ideas and voice. A teacher is a facilitator, guide and mentor. #TXed
A2: That’s why Community and building a School Family is so important in a classroom. We all help each other, and building a generation of kids that want to help. #TxEd
A2 If it's our classroom, it's our learning. Sometimes we have to search together, sometimes we don't know the answer, or we make mistakes. The best way to lead is to lead by example and share those experiences of success with more sts leading with us as Ts. #txed
Refer to @PrincipalOgg ‘s tweet about being student centered? It’s about their learning, not my teaching. If a student can explain it better, then let them share that out. The other thing would be to ensure you create a culture of risk taking. #txed#WestAveEs
Q1: The best way to be a facilator, is to be deliberate & explicit during your planning and delivery of instruction. When students know what is expected of them, why something is important, & how to get tasks done...they will be independent! #txed
A2: Make it part of your classroom culture for students to share things they are good at and teach the class. Then it will never feel out of the norm for a studnet to assist with a lesson when the technology is challenging for the teacher. #txed
A2: Recognize that students in your class may be resident experts in something and need a chance to shine. Also they can come up with unique ways of doing things & we need to celebrate that #Txed
A3- Some days I pull groups during Centers, and sometimes I pick a center to be my group. It gives me a good perspective on what their strengths are, and what I may need to add and change to accommodate for all my Little’s. #TxEd
#txed A3 Trs need to discover the kids that have the knack of being a good peer tutor. UTILIZE THEM! The more you let kids teach each other, the better the result.
A3) I like to group my students at different levels depending on the activity. writing, reading, etc... This provides opportunities for effective student learning. #TXed
Q3: Learning your students' strengths (and weaknesses) is so important- I use this knowledge to create lessons & activities that are more engaging because the students are the 'why' and 'how' for learning! #txed
A3: Mentoring, peer help, reciprocal teaching, student jobs, and sharing anecdotes that help other students attach themselves to content are all great ways #TXed
Make the extra fun stuff you can do with the technologt a way to extend. Have a rubric. Content objectives covered first, then take it to the next level with extra bling! :) #txed
As a campus we’ve identified essential standards and priority skills. We also require Lesson Frames to keep students focused. @LYSNation would be proud. #txed#WestAveEs
A4: All products need to fulfill parts of mastering the objective, and the objective needs to be in student language. The objective needs to become part of the flow of student thought #TXed
#txed A4 How many Trs post ALL their TEKS on their wall? Mr. Toups does. My Ss read through these as I teach each individual one. This is the only content related posters posted in my room. The rest is to INSPIRE and create a POSITIVE atmosphere.
A5-Kids will face this in the real world. Projects must be done at work and completed in a certain amount of time. Might as well practice while we have them at school. #TXed
A4: The bling brings them in, but there has to be substance to what you are bringing them to. Thank goodness we have made our “themes” in Pre-K curriculum based, and not Apples and Turkeys just because it goes with the season. #TxEd
Q4: Planning, planning, planning!
The PLC 4 Essential Questions help my team & I stay focused on goals and objectives, which translates during lessons!
#txed
A5 Love collaborative tech like Google Slides and Docs. Can see history and give feedback. This year I was thinking of them making SCRUM posters..haha! #TXed
A5- Seesaw is a great tool for PK. I can post the rubric with pictures and words, so kids know what’s expected and I can assess that they are understanding what I want them to. #TxEd
A5: Best tool for this is moving among groups and discussing progress. Also utilize @Google classroom to provide real-time feedback w/ comments and time and date due reminders. Communicate w/ parents also #TXed
A5) Lets see....Google anything, Microsoft forms, nearpod, edpuzzle, thinglink. I know I am missing some, but any tool that provides immediate.and accurate data to personalize learning! #TXed
If Dan Patrick is re-elected, I am certain he will further cut retirement benefits for teachers and support staff just as he slashed health benefits for retired teachers. He is indifferent to the financial terror he has caused retired and almost retired teachers. #txed#CanDan
I like leaving an element of surprise or extensions. It’s nice to see where kids can take their interpretation of their learning. Why limit them? #txed#WestAveEs
A6: Creativity, accuracy, and clarity. However, developing rubrics with students to give them voice in the process is great and can add to engagement and relatability #Txed
Great chat #TXed friends. Praying that everyone had a great start this school year. Remember:
*Ratings do not define you
*Failure is not fatal
*Success is not final
Keep building those relationships and God bless you!
Depends on the project. For genius hour or research or explanatory writing....their sources. Where did they go? What did they learn? How did they grow? Because we know...the more places we go #txed
"To a great extent, the state’s inaugural A-F grading system could be considered a proxy for identifying schools that serve high poverty student populations, rather than an indication of educational quality." #txed#txlege Download @MoakCasey's A-F analysis here:
