yes, we are used to seeing ourselves as solutionaries, but often schools can be part of problem
topic: What are the conversations of race that schools should be having in regard to the education system?
Basic cultural awareness and honest conversations. Seek to find our unintentional bias
We should be reading stories of people who have made breakthroughs with race issues
Thanks Alexander... so how to proceed?
The expectation for tonight's is we have respectful discourse. Thanks in advance.
Yes I recommend having teachers take implicit bias test as part of PD Could lead to eye-opening conversations
Thanks Adam... makes so much sense. How to proceed at scale?
Does this make it more equal? Would the school provide tech to all?

This should be one interesting
Thanks Let's look at our curriculum, are we still teaching white supremacy in our schools?
is a hidden curriculum for . . Lowered expectations and instruction is not the answer.
We need to ack. that SoC underrep AP and honors, overrep discipline referrals and special ed, and are not reflected in curriculum
Totally agree. Know your students and self reflect.
Tech is supposed to be a great equalizer... is that actually the case?
Such a test could really open the door to more meaningful conversation. So many ppl are totally unaware.
Hi all. Coming in a little late. Getting my classroom library set up. Is there a Q1, A1 format? https://t.co/Yw66LZ2ai0
There seems to be resistance to teaching more about the history of race in America. Ss only know surface details.
JOIN in progress Topic: What are the conversations of race that schools should be having in regard to the education system?
One of the convos that needs to be is around how educators can reach all students across race and across class line.
We need to actively recruit TOC and support them after they are hired.
by making it a priority. Lets balance our PD, convos, conferences on this topic. Complete equity audits

equitable tech is a start/providing equal resources doesn't undo systemic racism in our institutions
Agreed! Must be brave enough not only to speak up but to ask questions and admit we don't know it all. https://t.co/TgyX7hxnz7
If it is accessible to all I think it can be.
Current system of education please explain —> Stats About Racial Inequality in American Public Schools https://t.co/SuJESAcfVO
Yes. I was a proctor for an AP test w/ 140 Ss. Only 3 of the Ss were black. https://t.co/c1Nc9oipGx
We need to ack. that SoC underrep AP and honors, overrep discipline referrals and special ed, and are not reflected in curriculum
Introduce more positive influencers of color to Ss.
The claim that tech is a "great equalizer" papers over so many layers of bias. Need to avoid truisms
thomascmurray: As America’s students grow more diverse, a leading researcher explains how schools can adapt https://t.co/1RIsYPNUPW
yes, acknowledge and make changes. If curriculum is less white supremacist, more students succeed, right

I DON'T KNOW. Three of the best words a teacher can say!
RT How education systems perpetuate inequities for
It's like a very loud bar. With angry drunk aunts and uncles you don't want for holidays.
LOOK AT THE DATA! Current system of education has some splaining to do…
By 2025 the % of white Ss in public schls will be 46%. Need to act now to create schls that are not dominant culture adherents
Science is our friend in these conversations, reminds us that no one is free from bias
As one of the oldest 's, you'd think it would have a Q1/A1 format or something...
the conversation is on race in the classroom, but no Q/As
Teach content relevant to the Ss in class. Ss are fully capable of learning the standards using those resources.
Tonight's topic is important: What are the conversations on race that we should be having in regard to the education system?
As a black T, I resent this idea that speaking the truth to better students is at all brave https://t.co/wIfzyz4GnJ
Agreed! Must be brave enough not only to speak up but to ask questions and admit we don't know it all. https://t.co/TgyX7hxnz7
Plenty of research shows that growing up in poverty tends to put children behind… current education system mostly mum! Why?
Lots of resources curated by on https://t.co/J8X2PXukGF . Esp helpful article on white folks engaging in these convos

This sounds easy but decentering white beliefs about SoC can be very difficult...
yes, see tweets. Topic is addressing race/racism in our schools
We must push back on "color blind" ways of thinking, speaking, acting in our schools & work to disrupt them https://t.co/Rn5Al6blRX
There is. Or, something more like an old-school WWF event, really.
it is easy to ignore or pass judgement. Takes a mindset change and ability to walk the walk with reform
I teach Whitley...I mean Wheatley and the curriculum is well written but it's dominated by WP https://t.co/CWbpdfXYe4
Teach content relevant to the Ss in class. Ss are fully capable of learning the standards using those resources.
The history of public education in America is a history of race…
agreed. Even youngest students discuss race, they are confronted w/it daily. Ts must speak to current events
I am very interested in your viewpoint. Pls share more. Thank you.
as a white (future) T, I'm working on getting in spaces with other white T to have conversations & plan actions around race in edu.
More accuracy and truth in our history books.
Inclusive teaching can transform behavior and negative attitudes.
Bias =Subtle, covert & tchrs often UNAWARE of their ; however, Ss can "smell" its disempowering scent.
so many units are that way, b/c that's how we've taught them for years, but tradition is no excuse
Very hard to follow this chat, when the hashtag has been soooooo diluted in common use & spam.
The history of (insert any institution) in America is a history of race.
I am currently creating a pie chart in my head of spam vs. content in this
Perhaps acknowledging poverty as a problem with ed leads to some awkward political realities
Only white students will see themselves, especially if they cis and male
Just got home, did I miss yet?
My school has begun to do transformative inside-out work thanks to our partnership w/. Recommend them highly.
How do schools self assess if they have racist policies or a racist culture? Is it possible?
How many people typically engage in an topic? I saw this one had many votes tonight. Curious about what ppl hope to get from chat.
hope we r careful to look at assets of Ss as well. Love the Community Cultural Wealth model from Yosso to help
Wonder why the lack of structure. Don't usually join but find this to be hard to follow...Intentional?
I think some want a competitive edge. Sad, but I fear true. The funding model perpetuates this. (property taxes)
I have no clue. I usually don't drop in here, but talking race seems to important to miss
it's not beneficial for Pearson, unless they create a poverty test and test prep work books
Great question, - can you expand on this? https://t.co/iz3X41naEZ
How do schools self assess if they have racist policies or a racist culture? Is it possible?
why are they needed? do you have evidence of said racist policies or culture in schools?
Definitely noticing that. I wonder if anyone is hearing anybody else. This is my 1st
I'm not indicating that it is the solution but it is a start. To me, addressing poverty is key
I was just thinking this. But there's more than just vendor spam. The non-vendor spam is what's bugging right now.
Yes, but white Ts shouldn't rely on ToC to "teach" us about race/addressing race in the classroom/edu
Currently, 75% of teachers are white. Something is happening in schools that makes SoC not what to return as teachers.
public education is always a reflection of societal norms and reform
Why would he need any evidence before he just throws that out there on ?
It would be much better if white T comes in knowing something,it just burdens ToCs to explain evrything
We were wondering this earlier. The topic may be too big for 1 or 2 chats. Def checking out chat https://t.co/lYSCpmkbM1
Wonder why the lack of structure. Don't usually join but find this to be hard to follow...Intentional?
Tchrs see/feel the "pathologies" (poverty, crime, unemployment) associated with a group and "react" to it.
Just as we shouldn't expect SoC to be the experts in the room.
Getting my all-white admin to assess when policies in place at my 98% black school are racist involves too many feels
It boggles my mind when I see avoidance of teaching cultural topics in a history class.
I'm waiting for another "Here's how Teachers get a free burrito from !" tweet.
spammiest chat, but it's the hashtag, what are you gonna do
I guess we know which vendors not to use
Especially tokenizing SoC as if they can speak for all https://t.co/6dCE5pDltF
Just as we shouldn't expect SoC to be the experts in the room.
do you have evidence that racist policies and culture don't exist in schools?
It is partially possible for schools to self assess if they have a diverse staff and community, allowing honest input
good Q. As a white T, I encourage other white Ts to study their implicit bias, direct peeps to ongoing convos
I'm mostly wondering what we're doing beyond talking/having "conversation." What actions are we collectively taking?
Joining late bite grateful this conversation is happening.
B4 plans &actions are taken, white T's (me included) need to own their whiteness&reject it re: Baldwin/Coates: stop dreaming
that is just how is run. One question, go from there.
True but I dnt trust W Ts to unpack racism. Too many false narratives can develop w/o checking thinking
Great article and reminder to all teachers.
that's a great question, in many cases produces the same answer..... Not enough
I agree. Could add a suffix each week to weed them out.
YES. I love to learn abt cultures, it shows that other cultures can be just as worth it/valid.Expose to other cultures
haven't done in a couple yrs bcuz largely silent on issues of social justice, hoping 2nite will start larger convo
also hoping to meet others who will push my thinking in
How do I open these lines up without centering white comfort?
As a T I should have a diverse group to reflect w. But it's not ToC job to educate me, right
isn't that when ToCs come in?
I am desperately trying to catch up. Don't even know how!
Educators should be discussing why/how inequities, bias, and racism impacts everyone.
I agree... and didn't think you were being flip... i get it.
Amen. the pipeline excuses in edu, reek of the same racism as those in tech. Brilliant ToC are available
Yeah, this. fixing the chat and hashtag. https://t.co/3MQ90cKhWN
Because if the moderators aren't on point- that's OK. This was hastily put together. Let's raise good issues https://t.co/lefUfXNHH9
I don't want to sound like an ass, but the hour would be a good time to bring up actual questions that we should be asking...
its lack of cultural knowledge that leads to comments like Rep. Steve King's supremacist comments
In a sense, is that the paradigm our schools are responsible for shifting? (Yes, the pun was intended.)
Question to the group: What is the fear that prevents Ts from teaching on a cultural perspective?

If anyone is interested in this convo, lurk on or join Voxer groups discussing this daily
It's important for educators to understand and distinguish race, racism, historical inequities, privilege and white supremacy.
I attended Undoing Racism training hosted by The People's Institute for Survival & Beyond. Highly recommend. Look for scholarships.
this is impt. Words r just words floating around w/o action https://t.co/JNly7OY2TZ
I'm mostly wondering what we're doing beyond talking/having "conversation." What actions are we collectively taking?
Must learn to "Identify" what we "PERCEIVE" as misbehavior. Is it the Ss or is it really misconduct?
. How can anyone take the first steps to open conversation if we focus not offending, or being offended. We need to start.
1) lack of knowledge 2) afraid to say/do the wrong thing 3) lack of awareness 4) racism/sexism
https://t.co/VD5USik1w6
Question to the group: What is the fear that prevents Ts from teaching on a cultural perspective?
Just followed. Thank you so much for sharing this resource!
Schools must instill a sense of equity in all students. There is enough violence in the world. "racist" policy must be revamped!
Yes but before that I'm looking for white folks to have had an "encounter"-like exp that clears the smog
Why do you think that's the case? And how do we begin to change it?
Lack of knowledge, I would guess, but that can change.
.Leonie here.Waiting for my plane home.In NZ Maori ( Te Reo) is compul in all schs. Also culture. Other cult taught2
Our district teaches accountable talk (How to have a proper discussion). Model first then begin the process.

Much evidence of racist actions in schools. School to prison. Discipline. Rep in AP. Corporal punishment
I do think that a sincere effort to seek various and diverse perspectives is one of the first steps

I mean I get the logistics of that, this chat just seems really scattered. Hard to find the depth
Excellent Q, folks. https://t.co/ad5rrIURpW
Question to the group: What is the fear that prevents Ts from teaching on a cultural perspective?
Don't care that this is one of the oldest 's - it's certainly not the gold-standard for edchats... Yikes. It's feeling like chaos.
addressing inequity shouldn't be considered an add-on/extra credit. This is central to health of our schools
So for a serious topic, we are just winging this tonight? No rhyme or purpose..this will be helpful.. https://t.co/a4cGjQ0WNY
How does this happen when schools that are predominately white are rooted in white supremacy? https://t.co/37bEOCgkCW
Schools must instill a sense of equity in all students. There is enough violence in the world. "racist" policy must be revamped!
Another example: tone policing when addressing questions about racists and racism.
schools are at the forefront of change because we see the impact on our most vulnerable citizens
how does one get past fear of saying/doing wrong thing?
One reason is fear of the potential for comments to be taken out of context or misinterpreted.
Most Likely to Succeed screening by Ted Dintersmith "Teacher as Designer"
Revamping "racist" policies may lead to some difficult conversations. But, sometimes conflict is needed for change
Fear of pushback from parents. In my experience, privileged parents have a harder time confronting own biases than Ss
Until pale folk get busy calling each other out (which we're too polite to do) not much gonna change, which is, alas, fine with us.
benefiting from status quo. If I rock the boat, it doesn't benefit me if I'm privileged
Offering example of some work I did with my 4th graders this yr. Always looking for resources for young kids https://t.co/0SMd864asV
This! https://t.co/NAu80LUvAI
Question to the group: What is the fear that prevents Ts from teaching on a cultural perspective?
We don't get to set the rules of discourse, or the tone, or the timing.
Without a plan/measurement, action doesn't get taken. Any suggestion on how to hold schools accountable?
https://t.co/uoaHkjIKNu
Just like Ts discuss pedagogy at start of each school year, diversity should be discussed and action taken
I found it powerful to share my own biases w/my mostly white Ss. Showed them I have biases too
I don't think it is as much fear as it is the T's inability to relate possibly
The fear/insecurity often comes from a lack of context - personal and historical.
experience with saying and doing the wrong things, then learning from there.
And then show Ss that when I ack my biases, then I can work to break them down
Stakeholders need to stand up for what is right. Now, is as good a time as any to make a change for the better.
it's that 'don't know what we don't know' thing.Just have to decide it is important then do something.
Conflict is always part of change.
topic: What are the conversations of race that schools should be having in regard to the education system?
that's what it looks like, just jumped in after work, hoping to see Qs/As. Dunno, first edchat
It has worked well for a long time. One agenda controlled by our voice and direction.

yes we do. That's great for police but I'm talking about how are they being addressed in schools?
I hope that is the main reason, easiest to overcome I think.
Fear of getting into a spot they aren't prepared for...bringing something up they aren't prepared to discuss https://t.co/7e6ImucmmB
Question to the group: What is the fear that prevents Ts from teaching on a cultural perspective?
After this AM I'm really disappointed there isn't more structure
We have to listen to parents and students and respect communities we teach in
Status Quo...People in the Delta like to go along to get along...White comfort is dead center here
I cannot. But based on the conversation happening right now, apparently they do exist. That is unacceptable.
Schools hold the power, so they have to consciously shift power to youth and families, otherwise no accountability
I also think white tchrs talking about racial issues is sometimes dismissed as “they don’t know anything.”
Perhaps talk with your colleagues of color prior to discussing w/Ss.
Newly not-legal in CA, but allowing suspension for willful defiance in primary grades is one.
It's the schools that lack the perspective of families of color, sometimes intentionally, that I worry most about.
Yes. Start with listening. https://t.co/I6klwp5DiW
We have to listen to parents and students and respect communities we teach in
The most powerful thing I've seen a W T do is say, "I don't know. What do you think?" re: race/class
Yes, part of that is recognizing biases, making sincere effort to recognize privilege, giving voice
I'm struggling to come up with examples of what would be considered "racist" school policies. Examples please?
You cannot talk about a school or classroom without talking about the dynamics and realities of society and its citizens.
I don't have any. And that is also a real issue in schools.
Well, because many speak like they don't know anything. Gain the necessary historical context. https://t.co/vE76q2P18s
I also think white tchrs talking about racial issues is sometimes dismissed as “they don’t know anything.”
YES! It takes a lot for a teacher to say that, unfortunately, STILL in this day and age. https://t.co/16DvM8dMJn
The most powerful thing I've seen a W T do is say, "I don't know. What do you think?" re: race/class

I'm struggling to come up with examples of what would be considered "racist" school policies. Examples please?
nobody wants to take a chance when getting it wrong has drastic and/or painful consequences.
Our middle sch principal group often discusses racial matters. We are trying to be more aware & sensitive to potential issues.
That the ht is so commonly used, that these things pop up in the middle of the chat...
In my school, we used the "Leader in Me" program and told all students that we are different we are all leaders

Would things be different if adults in a learning organization approached learning with more questions than answers?
Have to admit that there is a problem. Solution will come if that's ack. & by having this convo we give Ss more voice

Much evidence of racist actions in schools. School to prison. Discipline. Rep in AP. Corporal punishment
Education should be about skills and much less about retention of knowledge
even though this chat has a timestamp on it, these convos need to be at the foundation of *all* we do as Ts & educators.
Discipline policies that vaguely define "disobedience" - Guess who gets punished? (hint: not white kids)
Can I just say something to the peeps that got blog promos buffered to the time of

Girl! This is so crazy! I'm so glad I took my Vyvanse today!
How do we help teachers gain the necessary historical context to talk about racial issues? At what stage does this "reform" happen?
White folk need to meet with other white folk explicitly to discuss race. (Yes, I'm aware that's been done before in terrible ways.)
: yes, and where networks like this are important for many rural Ts like myself.
Perhaps school districts must make more of an effort to diversify their staff.
I see a lot of great discussion on but can't find who is moderating. Help?
white supremacy and racism in education don't stop at 8pm (or whenever the chat ends). This is the work. Check .

Sharing this related thought: how many people champion grit in schools w/out understanding the work kids do to get to school?
topic: What are the conversations of race that schools should be having in regard to the education system?
That's kind of a blanket statement. Looking for specifics.
This would be ideal for schools so that an array of T's could discuss race issues together.
Here in Brazil public schools have "black conscience day" so that kids can start respecting each other since kindergaeden.
our own biases and racism as individuals; only then turn to ed institution and larger culture/politics/economy.
If PWI delude themselves into thinking they are serving their white Ss w/lack of diversity there's data to disprove right
I can see that one! Thanks!
If you are showing the Duckworth TED Talk on working harder, what are you telling your kids?
Approaching the closing minutes of this I'd like to thank the moderator team
85% W teaching force...where was the effort in the first place? It's not enough. We must do more/better
How might we abut hungry measurement in the next decade?
Right...structural racism...white supremacy...
True but it starts w/ hiring A SHIT TON of "those" teachers that never let up and push these conversations into actions
If you mean the sameness among white folk, you may have a point there.

I once heard Bill Daggett say schools are doing better than we think, but society moves much faster.

Right smtimes it's lessons that seem to have little to do w/race at first, that are so biased in reality

. Interesting chat. So many differences in different schs.Dont USA districts standardise?Gtg as boarding for plane.
THANK YOU for participating in discussion about schools, education system, and race. Shoutout to co-mods
Context matters. It's easy for us pasty white folk (especially men) to shout "meritocracy" w/out examining what goes into "merit"
I'm one who often misunderstands or is unaware of ways which I do perpetuate. Accountability to/from my peers necessary
We need to teach kids about microagressions when they commit them in our classrooms instead of brushing them off w/ "let's be nice"
Race is a curriculum point in hs sociology courses. Many teachers choose to "skip that chapter" or refuse to allow discussion. Stop.
Biggest takeaway: Discuss important issues in other chats () and let focus on the pros and cons of putting desks in rows.
Greg from Chi. Frustrated that many white tchrs don't seem to see these convos as important.
oh yeah, just so no 1 thinks Im a weird spammer, Thomas Mision, PreService T here in MN for ElemEdu w/ eye towards MS SocStud future
I agree. The first month is very important to build up the classroom/school environment, culture!
Ss can feel , "You can learn math because I can TEACH it so that you can"
A lot talk of bias. Dangerous word. White privilege isn't one blind spot. It wrapsaround society: Way of seeing/cognizing
Hi John... Topic: What are the conversations of race that schools should be having in regard to the education system?
Yes, I can see how that is a problem. Thanks for the example!
So true. And greater intentionality with how we listen. Adults who model this for kids are those who inspire change.
I think we are having a great dialogue tonight with positive outcomes. It can happen in the classroom too!
For many white Ts, focus is always on methods, strategies, CCCS. Racism, equity, cross-cultural tchng pushed to periphery.
We should be addressing why our faculty/admin teams don't reflect our classrooms.
Um...both...both exist within a system of structural racism. https://t.co/0eHOvog7qe
is that the fault of policy or choices made by people 'following' the policy?
like this discussion, very lively.
agreed. Ts must model respect and equality so that Ss will follow Ts lead.
As an adult working with kids "often misunderstanding or being unaware" is dangerous and a problem..
yes. My hook for reluctant Ts is empathy. Essential for literacy and for design thinking.
Chris, boarding a flight, this topic needs to permeate every one of your topics. Thank you for having it. Don't stop.

How might we exacerbate hurtful gamut in the next decade?
Thanks to all who participated in tonight’s . Now go have a similar f2f conversation w/colleagues.
For me, getting issues of race and power and privilege is so important. Stops people from attacking individual Ts
We have to teach Ss not to be reactionary in their response. They must learn to use intellect first.
Certain students can turn off for an entire year because of these "misunderstanding"
Agree w/what you said. Should be careful lumping "poor" & "minority" together. One does not mean the other.
Education should be about skills and much less about retention of knowledge
Course placement, suspension rates, special ed placement, disciplinary actions...
I agree. Exactly why I need self reflection, discussion with adults, accountability from peers/community. https://t.co/wdWMd1y1Xw
As an adult working with kids "often misunderstanding or being unaware" is dangerous and a problem..
"Rows of desks" was reference to past topics. Tonight's topic is incredibly important, seems weighted down with spam.
What does one SEE pathology/diseases (poverty, crime) or see beyond to the PROMISE,POTENTIAL of the human/student?
If T's aren't ready to step outside the comfort zone to talk social justice then students won't be either
I think getting it wrong is better than staying silent. You listen to feedback and do better
I believe those boys should be allowed to stand. accommodations can be made within their IEP.
I guess this is norm mod? Friendly suggestion, when discussing race, please have ?s ready.
If we, as white Ts, really want to be "good" tchrs for all Ss, we have to commit to anti-racist, anti-bias approaches in all we do
Educators teaching in the classroom requires intense deconstruction of white supremacy, not just positive intent.
We need to revisit "required reading" lists in public education and fill the gaps left by our history books.
This is definitely where teacher ed must make an impact, including subject area methods courses.
I'm rewriting my tech goals to be based around empathy, not apps. Hour of code is useless w/out it.
I prefer more open chats, some prefer more structured. Sorry isn't meeting your needs. :(
I agree. comfort zone is critical
For me that's why these conversations are so important to have with other Ts.
White supremacists don't create policies to disadvantage white students.
Spoke to group of Ts today about connecting w Ss, centering race/culture. Too many white Ts tuned out. (Though others engaged fully)
