Hello! Thank you for attending the #dojochat tonight! I am cindy a first grade teacher from Delaware! Looking forward to talking about teaching outside of the box!!!
Q1 teaching outside of the box to me means to add excitement engagement props costumes to your lessons make them memorable and hands on not worksheets!!! #dojochat
A1 Teaching outside the box means challenging my assumptions, trying new things, never being satisfied just with what is comfortable and I can do well.

A1: IMO it's teaching INSIDE the box that's difficult. In Israel the education system is really centralized and the MOE has full control. Very little autonomy for the T. #dojochat
I'm not a teacher yet but I would think that I could pull from my past teachers. The ones that I will always remember made sure to include everyone. They also made everyone feel comfortable and important #dojochat
I follow many inspirational teachers on Instagram. I find a lot of hands on activities on there. I also try to be creative myself, but let’s be real, most of teaching is “borrowing” ideas. 😉 #dojochat
A1. In it's simplest form, to me it means reaching beyond the worksheet and textbook to give my kiddos an hands-on and meaningful learning experience. #dojochat
A2. I really get to know my kiddos and what kind of learners they are. I try to pull inspiration from what interests them and different kinds of modalities of learning. Do they need manipulatives? Do we need to get up and move? Do they learn better in groups? #dojochat

Q4 for #dojochat your Classroom environment plays a big part when teaching outside of the box! It must be a safe environment that allows them to feel safe to take risks, make mistakes and have fun. It also must be one where expectations are set and consistency is key!
A4. My room is bright, full of interesting things, different kinds of flexible seating arrangements, and inviting. It's theme is the great outdoors. I make sure my room is a place that both my students and I look forward to being in every day. #dojochat
A4 environment is huge for thinking outside the box .. have to be willing to change when things don’t work. Change to the task. I use flex seating, too! #dojochat
A4) Ss have to have a good relationship & understand classroom expectations to feel comfortable to do crazy or different things. I think it also helps the Ts feel more comfortable to try new & different types of lessons if they have already built a relationship. #dojochat
Ah I see.. so let me edit it to... "Whatever you can do, or dream you can, begin it. Boldness has genius, power and magic in it." -via whoever said it 🤷♀️ #dojochat

A4 I try my best to create a classroom environment where effort and personality are noticed and welcomed, where mistakes are safe starting places, where difference is celebrated, and where there is space to change. #dojochat
I think it depends on the reason why school culture doesn’t allow it! Is it the culture because of administrators and the curriculum or is it the culture of teachers who do not want to put forth the effort to try new things or try novelty #dojochat
Q4 for #dojochat collaborate and support! Share share share! But don’t compare or make undesirable comments when others try this! It is intimidating to try new things! We should be encouraging each other!!
A5 I think it's important to be bold and share new ideas. To offer up support and take moments to chat/collaborate even with teachers who are resistant to newness/change #dojochat
A5- Lead by example and show people that it is ok if things go wrong because that is what makes us amazing teachers!! Fail is an acronym for First Attempt In Learning #dojochat

A5) It starts with stepping outside of your own, planning things together, helping those who want to try something but don't know where to start and applauding those who take those risks regardless of the results. #dojochat

Q6 #dojochat teaching outside of the box just means to add engagement and to add handson! It is as simple as adding a tablecloth and some props! Take your curriculum and find where this can be best used to enhance it!
While you may not be able to control what the curriculum is, you can control the way its presented and the tools you use. Presenting it in an interesting way is up to the teacher! #dojochat
A6 supplement with visuals, hand motions, pre teaching of your own ideas, share stories- anything! In special education, sometimes scripted programs are exactly what we need and other times it’s the opposite so we have to be prepared for anything! #dojochat
Last question in #dojochat my students are so engaged and excited that they learn the skills so much more! This helps them internalize the skills! THey are learning so much more and I am saving trees in the process!! It is a win win

There is no one set formula to get students to engage in material, the key is creating an environment where it is acceptable to, and encouraged #dojochat
A6 Be flexible. The more rigid I was and tried to stick to a lesson plan, the faster it would spiral. Let students lead, listen, and they will be engaged. #dojochat
The theme tonight seems to be environment is key!!! Yes!!!!! Collaboration!!!! Yes!!!!! Sharing!!!! Yes!!!!!!! Amazing chat!!!! Loved all of your thoughts!!! #dojochat
