This is the official Twitter account for #OklaEd, thehashtag that brings OK educators together. #OklaEd is not political & promotes constructive dialogue.
Ignorance in the voucher debate has reached an all time high. Free public education was an agreed upon core service, a common good, in 1907 at statehood. That's why it's baked into our Constitution. #OklaEd
I am Ta-lane-na from Northwest Classen. I will not be at Edcamp :(. Lurking tonight because I have to get ready to go to california for a PBL training. #OklaEd
My name is Jo Lein @JoMabeeLein representing TLI. We train and coach novice teachers and support school districts in the areas of instructional leadership. You know I will be at #edcampokc#oklaed
Debbie Thoreson, P of 3rd grader, T of English 3 & AP, Dewey High School. #oklaed I have plans that were made before I learned about edcampOKC, so I won't be able to make it.
Won’t be able to make #edcampokc this year. Sadface.
But I will be eating pancakes at the DeerCreek Bands Pancake breakfast fundraiser and listening to my older two kids play something brilliant! #banddad#oklaed
A1 I love getting the opportunity to meet with fellow #oklaed teachers and talk shop about issues and ideas we care about. I always learn so much and return to school refreshed!
A1) I love #EdCampOKC b/c it meets the needs of those attending. Creativity and differentiation based on those in attendance. Also, love seeing people that are #oklaed peeps!
A1: Real-time collaboration on topics specifically relevant to the audience in attendance. Not just a shot in the arm, you can go as deep as you need to! #oklaed
A1: I've attend one before and loved the interaction of so many dynamic educators in one place, If I can squeeze it in, I definitely want a replay of that experience #OklaEd
A1: You can find the answer to ANY question you may have. There are sooo many talented educators in one spot, and they are all willing and eager to help. GREAT Resources and Connections!! #oklaed
a1: decamps are different from most PD. There isn’t usually someone reading a PowerPoint to you and not allowing for feedback. Edcamps are open, anyone and everyone is welcome to speak and it’s truly a laid back learning experience. #oklaed
A1) If I remember the first #EdcampOKC I attended it was the learning from peers that intrigued me. I remember @andredaughty doing a session on PBL that was my hook. We have a great group of educators with a lot of knowledge to share. #oklaed
A1 It's a great opportunity to connect with #OklaEd friends that I don't usually have the opportunity to see, love sharing and learning with amazing educators from across the state. #OklaEd
#OklaEd A1: I’d of course want to be there to meet and have great conversations with all my “e-friends” met through this chat over the years! But, then, I just learned that @TeachFromHere won’t be there, so ....
I love being a part of the fantastic energy w educators anytime we gather to collaborate and learn. Together we are better, more creative and spur one another on! #oklaed
Rep Chris Kannady - HD 91 & Moore Public School Parent, a little late tonight. Someone didn’t send us our reminder until right at 8pm cough @angmlittle cough cough. #oklaed
A1) I am excited to have a conversation about instruction in our state. I am thrilled at the leadership of @KristinAtchley regarding trauma-informed and now we need to get real about building capacity to do just that. Who else is going to Mid-Del tomorrow? #oklaed
A2: Tools and strategies to support ELL students and how to help a school be culturally responsive and implement restorative justice practices. #OklaEd
A2: I'm always interested in PBL and interactive learning activities. As a Spanish teacher it is important to make the learning as "real" as possible. #oklaed
A3: I go to learn but I also go to contribute to the conversations. We all have knowledge to share. I can’t pinpoint one thing I would be excited to learn bc at edcamps what you walk away with is never what you even knew you needed but you did. #oklaed
A2 - I would really love to learn more about how to assess projects for standard mastery. Still on a mission to learn more and more about standards based grading for the secondary level. #oklaed
A2 #oklaed I have a list:
1. SM communication strategies
2. Solving chronic absenteeism
3. How to explain the new accountability reports to your community
With ICAP and the need for business and community partnerships, I’ve been attending several summits. However, I need smaller group sessions to really talk through ideas. #EdCampOKC#oklaed
A2: Conversations about authentic teaching and how to accomplish it in more classrooms, and conversations about how best to retain and develop great teachers! #oklaed
A2: I'm always looking for new science strategies, but I've been focusing on positivity and would like to feed off the positive energy that teachers trying to improve their craft always bring! #OklaEd
A2: Hoping for some trauma informed strategy takeaways in one of the sessions. So much info and opportunities. Is there a place to stay at Midwest City Elementary?? 😂 #OklaEd
A2: so many options, it's always hard for me to narrow it down. Hoping to learn about trauma-informed practices, equity, best practices in a variety of areas and of course I'm excited for the "APP Smackdown" #oklaed
A2: Started a great conversation at last weeks OASSP/OMLEA conference in a mini edcamp session on RTI. Would like to continue to hear what others are doing for RTI. #oklaed
A2: I am just excited to see where the conversations go - I love hearing the things that get Ts energized. I am sure Trauma Informed instruction will come up. Listening for Ldrs is critical at these events. Helps me know where to add more support. #oklaed
A2 I'm excited to hear what others have been up to, innovative ideas, tech integration...I'm always surprised and learn things I hadn't expected! That's the beauty of EdCamp! #oklaed
A2 -- one of the strengths...to my pea-brain..of #edcampOKC is I don't come with an agenda. I come ready to find something I didn't know I needed to know. #oklaed
#2 - preach! part of the problem is that a doctor’s note etc, will excuse for moving to the next grade, but not for our report card grade. #crazy#oklaed Why can’t we give parents a report card?!!!
A2: Conversations about authentic teaching and how to accomplish it in more classrooms, and conversations about how best to retain and develop great teachers! #oklaed
Hands down best edcamp experience ever was in Stillwater. @tbbrwn and I were in a room of brand new teachers and they asked us questions and we answered and we all discussed. It was such a good experience for all of us. #oklaed
I like that idea as well. I come with topics because it is one of the few times I can talk about my own personal focus areas of growth. I only put one of my topics up and try to find things I didn’t know but sounds like I need to know :) #OklaEd
A3) If I remember right the rule of two feet means that if you do not get out of a session what you need then you leave and find one that will give you something. #oklaed
A3: There is WAY too much great stuff to listen to and grasp to stay put in a section that you aren't "getting something out of". Up and outta there with your two feet and on to the next! #oklaed
A2: looking for strategies to increase parent engagement (how do you combat apathy?) Also interested to hear others thoughts on wraparound services, burnout, and representation #oklaed
A3: If you are in a session that doesn't work for you.. you get up and leave and go to one that does or collaborate w/ someone else on the fly! #OklaEd
A3 -- Oh, I have such a hard time with this one...It comes from my Granny telling me I can't get up in the middle of something...but rule of 2 feet tells me to do it if I'm not learning...so I try to find something to learn. #oklaed.
A3: If you're not getting anything useful from a session, use your feet to get somewhere better for you. It's an edcamp thing, so people won't be offended. :-) #oklaed
A3: If the session you are in is not what you thought it was or it is not what you wanted. Get up and walk out. Then go to a different one that is a better fit. #oklaed
Doing away with grades. Standards assessments. Met the standard or still working. When we say F, you failed, what message does that say about school. #OklaEd#edcampokc
A3 One of my favorites, so much so that I employ it at other PD conferences. The Rule of 2 feet in a nutshell is if the session you are in is not meeting your needs, walk out and into another that does. #oklaed
#OklaEd A2: I’d like tweets with links to key material central to session discussions. Also would be great to have a link to an “OklaEd-like” Tweet archive that I and many others have grown accustomed to having for review / further Consideration.
A3 If a session isn't meeting you needs...get you 2 feet to walking and find a session that's right for you...no judgement...this is about educators getting what they need. #oklaed
I think the term Lame is harsh since our colleagues try to do their best to present information that they feel is important. It seems insulting to say Lame because someone may not get something when someone else may get needed information. #oklaed
A2: I enjoy hands on activities/experiences that I can immediately take into my classroom. I also want to hear more about the trauma informed classroom learning. #oklaed
A4 - This is the best thing about EdCamp - it is supposed to be designed to meet individual needs/wants. The rule of two feet allows that to happen. #oklaed
A4: bc your time is valuable and shouldn’t be spent on things that don’t grow you. If you’re not engaged you will be on your phone the whole time and that is also disheartening to the session leader. Do both of you a favor and find the perfect fit for you. #oklaed
A4: #EdCampOKC is all about growing your practice and your voice/choice in your own PD; the rule of two feet helps to enforce this practice. Few PD opportunities gives Ts so much control over their learning #oklaed
#oklaed EdCamp is all about having choices in our own adult learning.
And it's a reminder that we need to teach in a way that our students wouldn't want to just get up and wander off.
A4 - This is the best thing about EdCamp - it is supposed to be designed to meet individual needs/wants. The rule of two feet allows that to happen. #oklaed
A4 it’s important because we as educators have to look into what suits us and can prepare us to meet the needs in our particular classrooms. #OklaEd#EdcampOKC
A4: There's so much to learn and such little time. Think of it as a buffet .... grab the main points and go on to the next room... LOL Or if the convo is super helpful stay and learn even more! #oklaed
A4: Different people are looking for different things, so if the session is working for others, but not for you, then you should get up and leave, so everyone there is getting something and not interfering with the progress of the session (or being bored!). #oklaed
A4 - edCamps are all about you getting the most out of the day. If you are not being sharpened in a session you need freedom to go where you can. It is about you not an agenda. #oklaed
A4: It is important bc the goal is for everyone to leave refueled, refreshed and reignited. Make new connections, find an “answer”/solution, excited to try something new. So no judgement to find what is mtg your need. Do it!! #oklaed
A4) I think the rule of two feet is important because this is not a conference of paid speakers or presenters. This is a conference of educators giving of their knowledge to other educators. No polished presentation but organic discussions with the freedom to stay or go. #oklaed
A4: Time is valuable. Not enough to spend not getting what you need when at an EdCamp there is always a valuable conversation/interaction available. Make sure you get what you need by making sure you use your time wisely. Many ways to do so... #oklaed
A4: Sometimes in PD topics sound applicable but once you get going you find they aren't what you expected or need and it turns into time wasted and a negativity of the whole experience. With the 2 feet rule, that waste of time feeling isn't there. It's what you make it #OklaEd
I was just talking about that the other day. Like #TLAP, if students could choose their schedules, would they choose to come to your class. #oklaed#hardquestions
A4) The rule allows us freedom to learn what and where we want. If it isn’t for us, we should find something that is...and it has ruined me for traditional PD also. I backchannel and PLN on Twitter now when I get bored in a traditional PD session. #edcampOKC#oklaed
This would solve the problem I see at so many other conferences--2 or more sessions I'm dying to attend but are scheduled at the same time. UGH! #OklaEd
A4: If you are not getting something or able to give something to a conversation, you need to move to a different spot so that you can give or receive what you need.#oklaed
This would solve the problem I see at so many other conferences--2 or more sessions I'm dying to attend but are scheduled at the same time. UGH! #OklaEd
A4: Taking ownership of not only your learning, but the conversations that occur about relevant topics as well. I think we call it “owning your own PD” in the field. I’m sure it has a high effect size relating to implementation 👌🏾! #Oklaed
A5 - I HATE THESE QUESTIONS! Everyone, literally everyone. That is not a cop out answer either. There are so many twitter peeps I want to meet. Shoot, I may not even make it to session b/c I just want to talk to EVERYONE! LOL #oklaed
A4: I joined late and was greeted by Q4. My initial thought was “Are we talking about swimming pools?” I got it now, however. A4: If the PD fails to employ adult learning strategies, pure fluff or irrelevant, bounce. #Oklaed
A5: Would be great to connect with #okleg & @okcareertech as well as business leaders and higher ed to see what we can partner on to ensure success of ALL students. #oklaed (continue to partner in most cases)
#OklaEd it would be great if @DDOK_official would be at #EdCampOKC! We need more conversations about how to serve students with dyslexia. No more “we don’t provide services for dyslexia!” No more!!!
A2: I’m extremely interested in flipped libraries, support non-traditional students via alt ed and utilizing online platforms to educate incarcerated youth here in OKC. #Oklaed
A6- Because it is FOR the educator and BY educators. It isn’t formal and allows for real conversations. We work best when we work WITH each other. The unconference allows that and I cannot wait!! #oklaed
A6 #oklaed If there's something you want to discuss with peers, you can put it on the board and see who shows up. No PowerPoints. No handouts. No canned presentations or vendors peddling their wares.
A6: I think it works because it is optional - districts don't require people to be there, so everyone there actually cares to be there. That makes a HUGE difference in how people act! #oklaed
A6: Because education is changing so quickly and there is so much great NEW stuff out there...not to mention political issues, people's most important need for the moment changes quickly. So topics made that day are GREAT!!! #oklaed
A6) This model works b/c it is driven by those in attendance. The sessions are specific and cater to the learning goals of those attending. Traditional PD sometimes misses the target just b/c it has to shoot a wide web to catch interests. #oklaed#EdCampOKC
A6: The lack of so much structure makes it feel more like hanging with your colleagues and less like PD. I'm learning, I'm networking, I'm expanding my horizons but not in a way that bores me to tears. #OklaEd
A6: The lack of so much structure makes it feel more like hanging with your colleagues and less like PD. I'm learning, I'm networking, I'm expanding my horizons but not in a way that bores me to tears. #OklaEd
A6) I think the "unconference" model works because the sessions are developed on the spot, it is done by the educators from the field, it is not a selling presentation, and the energy makes it motivating. #oklaed
It can be overwhelming. BUT - if you have an idea/topic you want to know more about - write it down! You don’t have to lead it, you just need to get it out there. #oklaed
A6: I think people enjoy the freedom, the energy and creativity that occur are amazing. Maybe the fact that it isn’t really “canned” allows for the important two way dialogue. Real authenticity in convos is an outcome people are hungry for in our field. No barriers! #oklaed
A6: People are looking for authentic ways to refine their craft. Giving opportunities for spontaneity helps move people outside of their comfort zones. #OklaEd
A7: Don't be afraid to speak up. First time jitters aside there is so much knowledge to pick from and you probably have some good contributions too! #OklaEd
A6: Less formality often leads to a relaxed atmosphere where more people feel open and willing to share. Don’t have to be an “expert” just have to be willing to speak and/or listen. Your choice. Your learning. Truly get to own it and be in control. #oklaed
#OklaEd A6: Because it’s educators facilitating sessions of interest to other educators - in order for everyone (including the facilitators) becoming better prepared, comfortable, and confident facilitating Effective Learning in their classrooms!!! #SlamDunk
A7: Be open to new opportunities and to meet new people! Also, be willing to lead a session if you have something to share! These work because people participate! #oklaed
A7: Beware of @grendelrick recruiting and poaching. But it is true newbies bring donuts... It is one of the few rules! But the Host District provided the coffee! #oklaed
A7) Come with an open mind and do not feel like you must host a session or that you will offend anyone if you use the two feet rule. We know the nature of the #EdcampOKC#oklaed
A7 If you want to know about something, don't be afraid to put it on the board. Someone else probably wants to know, and someone else will be willing to share. #oklaed
A7: Take a good look at the topic board and write down EVERYTHING you might be interested in. And even WRITE something if it isn't there. Have at least three choices per time slot so you can wander and learn as much as possible. #oklaed
A6: Informal but professional! Affordable, but Valuable! And also full of self efficacy! It’s like building your own school full of leaders based on their strengths! #OklaEd
A7: JUMP right in to the conversations. Just bc you haven’t attended before doesn’t mean you don’t bring your own bag of tricks with you that we are all dying to learn about. #oklaed
A7 -- come without specific 'I gotta learn XXX" expectations. Come thinking, "I'm gonna learn. And meet friends and make new friends. And learn. #oklaed
A7: Share. You might be new to this style of PD, but your voice might be the inspiration. All of us are seeds in the soil of education. #oklaed#EdcampOKC
A8 I'd love to talk about teaching with podcasts. How to developing engaging units around one or more podcast episodes. I have ideas, but I can always use more! #OklaEd
A8: I don't feel like an expert a much but I do handle classroom management pretty well, so maybe that or connecting with kids I get a kick out of that too. #OklaEd
A8) a. Business/Community Partnerships - facilitator but not master at all
b. Positive Behavior Interventions - successes and failures to growth - facilitator again but not a master
#oklaed#EdCampOKC
A8 - A session co-lead with @TeachFromHere and @ShariGateley on how to make the best edu hashtags of all time!
Seriously though, perhaps a session on using projects to teach content. #oklaed
#OklaEd A8: Would love to introduce my idea of the Optimized Overall Educational Experience and get dialogue / feedback to help me advance the development of it and, ideally, broaden the exposure of it beyond my thinking and writing. #Selfish
A8 I have been exploring the ways to make your lessons more accessible to all stakeholders lately and if I were able to attend I would be glad to share some of the tips and tricks I have come across #oklaed
A8: Branding/ Marketing /telling our stories well. Community Partnerships for wrap around services.... anything that I could genuinely contribute to I would be happy to share or co share! #oklaed
Not currently since I'm new. I did year 1 implementation at PCW last year and then moved to THS. We've had Dr. Riffel out this year to start the ball rolling. She created the https://t.co/8cAan85FDJ website with the USDOE back when it began. #oklaed#EdCampOKC
A9 -- putting real faces to the names of advocates and avatars I see on social media. Hugging necks. Seeing the passion for education on everyone's faces. Nothing better. #OklaEd
A9: That my contributions to the discussion have value and that my peers like me...they really liked me...lol At least I didn't feel like a dork when I spoke up so thanks for that !!😜 #OklaEd
