Today is the final chat in our Professional Development Summer Series!
Question 1 is up on deck; let’s chat!
Woohoo! Finally home to join this week. :) Jen from SE Wisconsin, GT teacher/coordinator, mom of two GT kiddos
Hi, Jen! Welcome back to !
Hello , Ruth from Maine signing on. District GT Coordinator
A1) I usually start with a FB status update before a conference to see who's attending.
A1) I’ve only attended local conferences. Hopefully, that will change.
A1) Let people know about the conference. And arrange to meet up at conferences using Facebook and Twitter
A1) I have the Ss complete a conference summary sheet and then review it with Ps prior. Volunteerspot made scheduling easy!
A1) As soon as a conference schedule is available, I check to see if I know presenters; then private message.
A1) I make sure that I have followed the conference host's twitter and FB a least a week b4 conference
A1) I make a list of people I want to see and keep it on my phone to make sure I don’t miss hopefully) anyone.
A1) I love technology for this...almost every conference has the schedule online...which allows one to preview beforehand
Excellent point! Had not thought of that! https://t.co/EZvBh0gnpd
A1) I make sure that I have followed the conference host's twitter and FB a least a week b4 conference
A1) I also look for authors of articles I've read in GCQ or those I haven't heard before
Hi. Shannon Fuller from Kansas City, MO. Gifted facilitator for kids in grades 3 - 5
I am Kelly-teacher, writer, GHF blogger & homeschooling mama to 2e 11yr son
A2 I've attended tweet-ups at TAGT and NAGC - it was great to meet people from this chat face-to-face. :)
A2) Tweeting allows me to catch all the great ideas shared...it also serves as a great reflection tool when I am back home
. I do the same and use to help me organize my tweets and share them with others
Hi, Kelly! Your name came up in my session as a great blogger!
A2) No I have not done that yet (would be great) except for one Skype link up to a group who were tweet- upping
A2) Well … of course ! But only at gifted conferences. That needs to change though – get out of the echo chamber.
A2) No, but I'd definitely give it a try
Can Skype still be used for groups? Not sure.
A2) I try to organize Tweet-Ups at every conference/convention I attend; best way to get as many as possible together.
A2) We had a great turn-out at the recent Annual Conference in Williamsburg – great to see many Tweeps!
I think it is only certain types of account - I have not used Skype for quite a long time
I want to explore other avenues. Many Google Hangouts?
great conferences are informative, invigorating & inspiring.Well worth money and time when you can connect/learn

A2) We’ll be having a Tweet-Up at in Dallas in December! Follow for details.
What is involved with organizing a Tweet-Up?
A guest list and LOTS of phone calls to the conference venue. Hard to organize if you haven't been there.
A3) I have used Guidebook and most recently Whova; both provided by conference organizers.
Twitter. You can follow allow quite easily.
A3) Twitter is my favorite way to connect with friends who couldn’t make it to the conference.
I am a huge Twitter fan-quick and easy to connect
A3 I love Twitter because hashtags are so easy to follow. Then I use to compile my tweets and those from others for future
A3) I also love Twitter as a way to showcase presenters comments & speakers.
A3) I agree! https://t.co/JpqiIS8GbC
A3) Twitter is my favorite way to connect with friends who couldn’t make it to the conference.
A3) Find Friends is useful.
I think it's important to make sure everyone knows the hashtag prior to the conference or else confusion!
A3) Perhaps for the 1st time, at I used Facebook GOLIVE to share a presentation by !
And I am grateful! So many have seen it!
Very true! Conference are getting better abt posting it - actually had it on our name badges!
A3) Camera and notepad app of some kind for recording information from presentations and Twitter or FB for communicating
Yes, it helps you locate friends' locations.
I'll have to check it out for sure!
We’re already half way through our chat! Thanks for all the great sharing.
Q4) What strategies do you use to meet favorite speakers, presenters or community leaders at conferences? https://t.co/t4q6LnH6bw
I think Find My Friends is iOS only, unless it’s a different app you’re discussing.
A4 I just walk up and introduce myself. :) I've found most to be very responsive as we share the same passion for the topic.
I'm an Android girl, but could bring iPad to a conference. ;)
A4) I work those connections! It's a small world in GT land and everyone knows somebody...6 degrees of Kevin Bacon
A4) I usually have a game plan of sessions/breakouts I want to attend and where/when author meetup are scheduled
That sounds pretty organized!
A4) Often the best way is to introduce yourself after a presentation or keynote.
A4) Join the queue to talk to the presenter, catch up with them at tea breaks Some conferences have notice boards for catch up notes
A4) For many years, I’ve made it a point to get books autographed by the author if available – nice for both of us.
This always works! I've played this card https://t.co/HXzyM9iUAz

Or coffee breaks! I have only seen notice boards at ed conferences. I'll have to suggest this here.
Often changes some when I talk with others at conference...flexibility is always important ;)
A4) Important to do your homework – know about the work of community leaders you know will be attending.
A5) Absolutely! Vendors are generally well-versed on gifted issues as well as their products.
A5 Only if I am on a mission to find certain resource - then there are usually conference discounts.
A5) Yes I always make useful contacts and gather great collections of resources from vendors at conferences!
I noticed that offered significant discounts on their books at !
A5) You are all so good! I've never really worked the vendor angle. My Ss love the wide variety of pens and pencils though!
A5) Conferences are a perfect place to connect with organizations who offer services & products.
I've found that more with publishing companies than anythingr, and most will ship for free, too. :)
Most vendors encourage that participants avail themselves of the swag! Everyone wins ...
A4, Yes, during the last conference, I attended the session hosted by one of the vendors, it was very informative.
Yep! Easier to ship than bring a lot of product with them.
Another good point - many vendors host get togethers! I recently enjoyed one from https://t.co/YZVi8sz3Ne
A4, Yes, during the last conference, I attended the session hosted by one of the vendors, it was very informative.
Work with similar organizations - a microschool organization might be a perfect fit.
A5) Also there will often be information about other upcoming conferences on the vendors displays
Final question coming up!

A5) Also there will often be information about other upcoming conferences on the vendors displays
A6) I try my best to follow people I meet at conferences preferably on Twitter. Sometimes FB; but that's often too personal.
yes! For me, that face to face contact matters
A6) No doubt, Twitter provides the best opportunities to stay connected.
A6 Twitter, Facebook, email - lots of chats and groups to join in
A6) You may be lucky and find new friends who live close by or else it is back to phone, email and social media
Often surprised to meet friends from local area! https://t.co/ujwSzVksRo
A6) You may be lucky and find new friends who live close by or else it is back to phone, email and social media
- I agree. That is where I find the people who have the same passions.
A6) I agree with and ...Twitter, hands down is the best way
Twitter has been a powerful tool to stay connected
Twitter chats really are a good way to keep in touch ... often a year or more between conferences! https://t.co/V0E7uF59oh

A6) I also work to exchange contact information while at a conference to be used as a resource for my followers later.
A6) As old school as it is, I still love a good business card
A6) I post my presentations to Slideshare. Important that conference attendees feel they receive value from conference attendance.
. Very true and sometimes more if the location isn't the best for some. Looking forward to being in Chicago!
Use Apps to scan with your phone, too! https://t.co/Gv2Hbcz5dB

@ rlyonsroar Agreed - often overlooked, but still a great reminder of person/role.
I found out this week that I get to go to this year. So excited to meet other GT teachers.
I always come home with tons of these!
Yes, apps are the way to go for me... I like cards but I lose them.
We’re nearing the end of today … final thoughts/takeaways?
Yes I love it when they include a QR code link!
This will be archived at & the link will be shared via later today
