The first Twitter edchat in the Philippines, helping teachers grow their PLN, use tech in the classroom and promoting a culture of teachers helping teachers.
Hello, everyone! I'm excited to learn from y'all today. Our topic for today is "The Overworked and Undervalued Teacher." Let's start off by introducing ourselves. Please don't forget to add #edchatPH at the end of your tweet.
Hey, #edchatph crew! I'm a literacy coach, MYP Language and Literature teacher, and international literacy consultant based in Tokyo. Happy to be here and learn with you all!
I'm Jerald. I'm originally from the Philippines, but I currently live in Wild, Wild West Texas. I am a teacher and instructional technologist for Pecos Barstow Toyah ISD. #edchatph

Gidday, hello, salut #edchatPH, there is always one late to the party. It's 11.30 on a Saturday here in Melbourne. In the middle of teaching English to international ss and then I'll be teaching my Deaf students once more.
#stucentclass Happy Friday there and at 9.30am it is the start of our glorious weekend. Heulwen here super happy with my teacher #tesol practicum but even happier to have 2 days to go a little slower!
A1 there is no money but itβs the journey and the mileage that make it worthwhile. Seeing your students realize their dreams and watching them become successful are all worth it. #edchatph
A1: The truth is so much depends on WHERE you teach. There are vast differences in teachers' pay and benefits around the world...not to mention among systems (public vs. private, international, etc.). #edchatph
A1 even if thereβs no money in teaching, there are ways to still live comfortably. Training teachers, consulting for other schools, gaining professional certificates also helps. #edchatph
A1 Money is an issue in education, but there's a whole lot of perks that make up for it. No. 1 perk for me are the OOOHH's and AAAHH's that I hear from the students when they understand a complicated lesson. #edchatph

#edchatph a1 My digital #pln#owlsofnite have discussed this. Australians teach more days but I think our pay is fine. However, to be cash rich, go into something else! I'm great at budgeting, so I've always been able to do what I want.
A1: I would say there's rarely enough money in teaching nor in many other potentially challenging professions. Also varies greatly by school, city, or county.
#edchatph
In the coming years, I hope to make the @IBO my career by becoming more active in the IBEN. Workshop leader and school visit team member/leader in the pipeline. All this while still enjoying being a teacher. #edchatph
That's a very good point. Even in the US, there's a big wage gap between states and school districts. I'm lucky to be at a district that pays above state requirements, but not everyone has such luck. #edchatPH
A1: My answer wonβt be popular. When I told someone as a 15 year old I wanted to be a teacher, they ranted about the low pay & lack of teacher authority. However, Iβm blessed!Iβm not a millionairess, but I ainβt hungry. I manage my means & I donβt live above them. #edchatPH
This has to be a priority of each government. Teachers can direct and change the future. They should be provided with the means to stay and grow in the profession. #edchatPH
Yes, my pay was significantly different when teaching in VA vs. teaching in TX. And then it changed significantly again when teaching overseas. #edchatph
A1: I know none of us teach for the money, obviously, but at the same time, it's a shame that so many of us have to live the reality of lower wages. But some areas in the US are trying to provide incentives to get more teachers to move to rural or underserved areas.

Itβs the same here in the Philippines. The government wants/wishes for more teachers to go into public schools. But the incentives and the stories really dissuade a lot #edchatph
Iβm currently reading Finnish Lessons 2.0 by @pasi_sahlberg, he was one of the architects of Finlandβs educational reform. Really interesting book #edchatph
A1: I didn't get into teaching for the money. My children fell through the cracks and I don't ever want to see a child suffer the way mine did! #SPEDTEACHER#edchatph
A2: The kids are my North Star. They motivate me to do my best, even on days that aren't as sparkly as others. They deserve it. https://t.co/u4aSQQEJz5#edchatph
A2 apart from the students? Knowing that Iβm in a school that values my hard work and lets me pursue my passions because we both know it will come in handy in the future. #edchatph
#edchatph a2 I've done jobs where I earn more and less paperwork but teaching is far more interesting and challenging ( & I laugh more) . The paperwork is something that some schools do well and others let get in the way of the work. The workload needs hols to counterbalance tho
A2: Students motivate me! They are my cause. I make an effort, everyday, to remember the reason I worked hard to become a teacher and remain one. I still canβt believe Iβm a teacher. Itβs still a dream come true almost 20 years later. #edchatPH
A2 knowing that it will all be worth it in the end. Papers and projects and tasks pile up but itβs the genuine smile and enthusiasm students have for learning that pushes any teacher #edchatph
A2 Only a genuine Love of learning and of students can make Ts move mountains of paperwork. We should rationalize the work. If so much time is spent writing lesson plans the time to look at assessment data and reflective practices are lost. #edchatPH
A2: Kids are hilarious! Laughing with them makes my day. Praising my students throughout the day is definitely what keeps me going. Seeing the happiness in their eyes for being recognized. Knowing they'll never forget me, so I'd better make a good impression every day.

It shouldnβt be about grades and quantifying student performance. Those are good indicators of effective teaching but the real questions are: are your students happy? Are they really learning? Understanding? Connecting? #edchatph

A2: Having students that are hungry for what I have to share with them is enough motivation. Also, our district is getting more and more into GSuite. While it doesn't get rid of paperwork, it streamlines the process as well as communication. G Classroom is my friend. #edchatph

Balance the work. Too many worksheets, pen and paper assessments and tests with so many similar items will really burden a teacher. Leaders, help Ts to teach smart. #edchatPH

Very true. But we still have to make changes in our own little ways. Regulations will always be there but when you make those changes and communicate it to parents, they know that there is a genuine and trusting connection between you and the student #edchatph
Isnβt this why we have Profeaaional Learning Teams? Time should be built into our school day to look at assessments and reflect on our teaching. Right? If not, weβre doing our teachers and students a disservice. #edchatPH
A3: Making time for self-care is a must. Setting boundaries to ensure that you stay energized. In order to go after our WHY (i.e. what's best for kids), we have to take the time to take care of ourselves, reflect, and rejuvenate. https://t.co/gmNg1qtP3O#edchatph
#edchatph a3 Great question. 1. My colleagues always walk each other out to make sure that people aren't living at work. 2. I consciously walk more and go to a drawing group, to make myself socialize. The job is not your whole being.
Yes, @JeraldJolito! Taking care of ourselves each and every day will only lead to more productivity, progress, learning, and positive impact in our mission to serve kids, our world, and the future. ππ #edchatph
Thanks. Our priority is to influence Ss to love learning. We talk to them, give them feedback and see them as persons. #edchatPH I was not a good teacher until I saw the students as persons entrusted to my care.
A3: By reading something for myself! I love to read and lose myself in books. My goal is to read at least 30 minutes a night after all 3 of my boys are in bed and all school things are done and ready to go. #edchatph
A3: Phew! Ok here we go. It is a stressful job. Like, majorly stressful at times. I listen to guided meditations when I'm especially stressed. I also work out most days of the week, which I have found to be essential for my well being. Also coffee and wine. Ha!
#edchatph
A3: I have a life! βΊοΈ It can become pressurized in a school building despite processes put in place to ensure peace. I have to go to Church, The Lord is my refuge and strength! I enjoy my husband & family. We take a vacations. Ongoing PD also helps. #edchatPH
absolutely, I had a bad case of this 3 years ago, I learned my lesson the hard way but I'm thankful that God was able to heal me, my friends and my loved ones #edchatPH
A3 Know what is essential and focus on that, don't let the naysayers get into you instead surround yourself with people who will support and uplift you when you are experiencing trying times #edchatPH

A4 at the end of the day, itβs a job unlike any other. There will be good days and bad, terrible parents, terrible students, terrible bosses BUT itβs the only job that lets you go on term breaks, summer breaks, Christmas breaks. #edchatph
A4 cont. itβs the only job that lets you do things differently each day, pushes your creativity, pressures you to become better, and forces you to be on your toes EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. #edchatph
that's the BEST part actually for the students, i once joined a plank challenge with my grade 7 and they can't stop talking about it for weeks #edchatPH
A3 We need to support each other and older teachers should be sensitive to the needs of the new. #edchatPH There are new Ts who have admitted to being depressed and stressed- we should help them.
Never enough to sustain even the simplest lifestyle, with the increase of commodities and services, purchasing power of teachers in PH had gone so weak. No wonder even private lending institutions would think twice on lending us money. #edchatPH
A4: I stay in education because I refuse to see 1 child suffer from public schools. Too mnay children labelled behavioral children when they have underlying issues no one wants to find! #edchatph#specialneedsmom#spedteacher
A4 because teaching keeps us young...reliving our youthful days, knowing whatβs IN with kids, connecting with their likes and hobbies because it suddenly became yours too. #edchatph
A4: Teachers remain because making a positive difference in the lives of children is truly their passion. Helping others and spreading a joy for learning (and life!) is their mission. #edchatph
Sorry missed this. Been very worried about my parents and sisters in Abra (Northern Luzon) due to #OmpongPH Signal no. 4 and I lost contact with them. #edchatPH

A4 Teachers remain in the education because the experience no matter how trying at time is still rewarding, the hugs of the students, their success, the glow of confidence, no other work can give this kind of fulfilment #edchatPH
