Lots of appreciation goes out to @drmcclard for moderating an excellent #LearnLAP this evening!
Next week, please join us as @superstarcurric moderates the chat: "Creating a classroom culture where leading is expected just as much as learning!"
#tlap is beginning in 2 minutes!
Hello! My name is Katy Miller and I am a freshman elementary and special education student at Grove City College. Excited to part take in my first Twitter chat! #tlap

A quick tip for all in #TLAP tonight. If you use Tweetdeck for the chat, have two columns with the #TLAP tag so you can have one at full speed and slow the other one down
;)
#themoreyouknow
This is my first time using Tweetdeck, so I did not know I could adjust the speed. Adding this to my list of tips to research after the chat. LOL TY! #tlap
A1: Curiosity is created by implementing Depth and Complexity strategies in reading. D&C invites students to go beyond the words and simplicity of the task, and to dig deeper in order to find patterns, rules, exceptions, etc. https://t.co/1Ee0j5WNa3#tlap
Tweetdeck updates as new tweets fly in, but if you start to scroll, it won't bump you down.
I have one column for scrolling and one for real-time feed.

A1. I teach 7th Grade Science.
I like to give my students an essential question and let them figure it out. This week, they have a choice “menu” of 12 things to pick from. These 12 things include posters all the way to modeling/screencasts. They show me what they know! #tlap
A1) I think it all comes within those first few minutes of teaching a lesson. If you have a good hook, something that sparks the students interest and relates it to prior knowledge you are in #tlap
A1: I'm an elem. school principal so each day I try to start the day with a new hat for bus duty and doing tricks or singing songs outside with the karaoke mic. I try to hook them in #tlap

I am moderating my first pre-service Twitter chat this Thursday from 7:30-9 PM. Excited to share my passion with other pre-service teachers and help them learn from amazing teachers like all of you. #tlap
A1 You bake it at 365 degrees for 30 minutes... #tlap and when you pull it out make sure the crust is nice and flaky, In other words 30 kids and day 65 and you let the students take the tangent where it needs to go... #tlap

A1: You need to start with a smile, add a little humor, sprinkle in some creativity with a touch of collaboration. When you think you might be lacking you spice it up with some choice. Boom! #tlap
A1. Give them the materials to a lab, but let them experiment! (If the materials are safe enough for that). Example- rock cycle being modeled by starburst. #tlap
A1: I do not have a classroom of my own yet but one day I hope to cook up curiosity by creating episodic lessons that are memorable for my students. #tlap
A1. The quality of ingredients makes the difference in the kitchen--why wouldn't it be the same in the classroom? Good hooks, good EXPERIENCES, good texts, good thought experiments, good options, good QUESTIONS, good laughs... #tlap
A1: Will sometimes show them a picture with no caption, or a series of pictures with no captions, and let them imagine what it/they are portraying or depicting. Then ask them why they think that. #tlap
A1: With a HOOK! Today we learned about clams- Pirate Learners had to become Marine Biologists and explore how many clams were in Ocracoke using estimation & multiplication! #tlap
A1 I feel like science makes that pretty easy. Just having something new in your class...equipment, supplies, a new "toy" out makes them say...what are we doing today. I always answer....SCIENCE! #tlap
A1: delivery is everything! No one wants to eat boring content...no one! Great Chefs taste their food before sending it out...Teachers taste your food! #TLAP
A1: To cook up curiosity with your content, engage students in the learning. Pull questions that they can relate to so they feel like what they are learning is useful not just in the classroom! #tlap
A1: I preheat the grill before cooking my lesson, use mystery, location, movement-whichever fits that lesson best, and challenge Ss to think deeper and examine preconceived ideas. Pretty easy to do in English. #tlap
A1: My content area is English Lit. I think you can cook curiosity generally by asking questions and showing students how they can relate to the characters in books. Show them that Shakespeare's ideas are still living! #tlap
#TLAP A1: I build my curriculum around the interests and talents of students. This means that I change what I do each year. A student wrote about music and created a 20 minute movie called The Rhythm of Life.
A1: I let the students FACILITATE the conversations to allow their curiosity to foster! This week, we are orally answering "Would You Rather" questions! #tlap
A1: I'm an elem. school principal so each day I try to start the day with a new hat for bus duty and doing tricks or singing songs outside with the karaoke mic. I try to hook them in #tlap

A1: Teachers in my district (#Bonitians) use tone and mood to build curiosity. K-5 Teachers do this very well.
"Boys and girls, I have something ^very^ important to tell you...."
"You're not gonna believe this..."
#TLAP
Q1: in the projects I do for class, I integrate questions into presentations about how the students think people in history felt about a certain event. For example: asking how the Native Americans might have felt about Columbus coming to the Americas. #tlap
A1 Anything that has real life application and relevance for the kids at their development level can hook 'em. They love helping me solve problems! Like figuring out how many candles I need to buy for my dog's birthday cake. 🐕 #TLAP
I showed them this picture, explained where this was geographically and their mission. They wanted me to tell them more, explain more- but they had to discover on their own. PLUS they had the names of actual clams! #tlap
A1: I started my landforms lessons last week. I started by taking the kids to the summit of Mount Everest using Google my Maps. I couldn’t stop them from finding the other landforms. I sat back and watched the magic. #tlap
A1: By taking popular songs and rearranging them to a different style or adding interesting harmonies, I can take what is familiar to my choir students and inspire them to actively analyze the music they hear. Then by understanding music they can better make their own works #tlap
A1. Kids are likely not curious if they're silent and sitting in rows... movement, discussion, collaborative problem-solving is a little more like it! #tlap
In response to Q1, keep in mind that curiosity can be--and should be--happening outside of projects as well. In fact, heavy doses of curiosity are recommended.

I was teaching a second grade science lesson on the rain forest habitat today and found this technique to be especially handy. If you're passionate and exciting in mannerisms and tone, then they follow suit. #tlap
My favorite is @screencastify! But I heard about Loom (I think I spelled that correctly) on the #HouseofEdTech podcast today, it sounds pretty awesome too! #tlap

#tlap A1: I like to brew up curiosity by inserting kids into a narrative... Set up a mystery for them to solve and they'll dive right in to find out (or determine) what happens next!
A1 I cook up interest in my content by (at least attempting to) start where the Ss are, using what they know and like, & also starting with questions they may be grappling with. This is still a work in progress... #tlap
A1 No matter the population of students I am teaching, I use their interests to be sure they'll be the most curious about the lessons. Make engagement accessible for them. #tlap

I'm a STEM Teacher so I am often coding, playing with a robot, planting seeds, cutting with zip snips when they walk in. They always ask "what are you doing?" I know I have them. #tlap

A1: Always make sure you pre-heat the grill... maybe just a little so that your Ss are excited for the day to come. It helps to start the fire before they go home so they're excited for the next day #tlap
A1: I stopped cutting off the "what if" questions in my math class. I started embracing the Ss "found" methods of solution and worked through helping them see connections between my methods and theirs. #tlap

A2: I think I would say our current unit, Waves. It’s pretty interesting to me, but students do not see it as being “important”. We make it relatable to as much as possible by doing a lot of hands-on in this unit! #tlap

A2: TL's just talking about this on #futurereadylibs FB... citations. Even with @noodletools which helps, still more of a "have to." At least their research and presentations are a choice! #tlap
A2: I was just teaching dividing decimals using long division. I have ELL students and struggled to use visuals to show this and make the content come to life. Still trying to cook something amazing out of this dish. :) #tlap
A2: Most challenging is poetry. However, I think it is more of a chef error than customer error. I want to grow in pushing their limits in truly analyzing the poem and making it an experience they will love delving into. #tlap

Ahhh. Mine is grammar in general - it's definitely important but Ss don't love learning it... yet. Do I have an awesome game based learning activity up my sleeve? Yep! #tlap
A2: Honestly, I try to give my Ss real-world connections to every content that I'm teaching. I make sure the Ss know the purpose and reason for why we are learning what we are learning! It makes everything so much more meaningful! Think of your own self as a learner! #tlap
Similar but backwards. Usually I start with, "So, what did we talk about yesterday? making a big production about how old I am and how I can never remember." They eat it up #tlap
A2 It can be a challenge to teach the grammar sometimes, but there are so many creative ways to get Ss to work together and create games, or to use some digital tools to engage Ss more #tlap
A2: Multistep word problems in #3rdGrade...love to create challenges, brain teasers and have the students show the way they found the solution. Also, great way to integrate #BreakoutEDU#tlap
A2: this semester was my mutual funds and making them relevant and showing why the NAV is important to the stock market. I went with #HyperDocs for the win and #xplap#tlap
A2) As a presevice teacher i really do not have an answer for this. But I know as a student the least meaningful topics where the ones that I felt I would never need again. By making content relevant to daily life gives it meaning. #tlap
A2 Getting Ss to see the importance and relevance of grammar. It's a tough sell, but I'm working on it. I'm trying having them create style guides this year. We'll see... #tlap
A2. Different social studies units. Geography and US government. Both are essential to understand their world but can be a bit dry or lack flavor if not done well. #tlap
A2: Speaking from my experience as a student I have found that it is challenging to find content meaningful when I am struggling to understand it. If students are in the frustration zone then content seems less meaningful to them. #tlap
Why is Shakespeare so important? Or that literature book that you are reading ... it makes it all relevant when they look up and see the plethora of symbols and connotations that have affected our everyday lives. Mythology might be dead in some realms, but not in our world #tlap
A2 The most challenging lessons are the ones that I'm least interested in, TBH. That's when the PLN sharing magic comes to save the day! #sharingiscaring#tlap
A2 I actually just love science and conveniently love figuring ways to make student connections and all content exciting. Erosion has been stumping me, but I think I'll incorporate a green screen! #tlap
A1: Culinary Ss create food trucks & “travel” across US to learn about regional cuisine. They adapt their signature dish to flavors of each region they visit. #tlap#xplap
A1. Videos can be a good way to engage kids early, starting the day with a video, sometimes it connects, sometimes it won't, but having kids being able to look forward to something that simple can get them ready to engage right when they walk in #tlap
A1: I give out teasers on the morning announcements before Ss come to leadership class, then I meet them at the door with a puppet. That hooks and baits them for what's to come! #tlap
A2: As a trainer & coach of Ts, the most important content is that Ts know the WHY behind what they are doing and who they serve! Same for children in the classroom. Know the WHY! #TLAP
A2: I feel like every unit can be challenging if a connection to real life isn't made in the beginning, bc then the Ss don't understand why it is relevant to them #tlap
Awesome! I have a Would You Rather flipgrid, if you want to check it out, only 2 topics posted right now, but more are coming. My Ss came up with a list of topics they want added. https://t.co/GfJyA2scU1
#tlap A2: Theatre History is by far my hardest unit to teach. It doesn't fit with anything else in the curriculum and my unit sucks! #edufail@ItsMrsPenrod
We study Greek, Norse, and Tolkien mythology. Year long class. Not saying I can't make it meaningful, but not all Ss see it as meaningful in same way. That is my most challenging class to make meaningful to Ss each year. :) #tlap
A2: As a principal I try to sprinkle in learning and fun stuff into meetings, especially when we have the "must dos" such as required paperwork, etc #tlap
#tlap A2: So what the Ss work on during the beginning of the year will also be used at the end of the year. I use Understanding by Design to plan my units. I think about what I want them to do and then plan how I get them there.
A1: Culinary Ss create food trucks & “travel” across US to learn about regional cuisine. They adapt their signature dish to flavors of each region they visit. #tlap#xplap
A2: Well, I haven't started cooking up many lessons yet, but the hardest area so far to make meaningful is anything that only ties into professional or monetary value. I've always thought developing the person is more important than any job or money! #tlap
A2 it’s not necessarily the content - it’s the way you present it that is the most challenging, a plate of cupcakes or a plate of cupcakes on fire- all in the way we present the content right @tishrich? #tlap

A2. The worst thing that can happen in a class is for a student to ask "Why do we need to know this?" and not being able to give them a good answer. Finding an answer to the why question is a good place to start #tlap
Multi-Step word problems can be difficult for my 3rd graders. They’re used to being one-and-done. They need some motivation to get through the productive struggle. I agree that they love seeing each other’s work. #tlap
A1 sometimes I cook up curiosity with an activity that is fun and active but really a great learning, too! If you can create a recipe where kids are learning and loving it ... ❤️‼️#tlap

A2: As a pre-service teacher, what I have found is that most students who find subjects outdated like history do not think they are meaningful. Students might ask to know why what we are learning what has already happened. #tlap
I had a lot of fun teaching grammar to the "behavior problem" middle schoolers. We used celebrity tweets to correct, improve, make more readable, etc. They LOVED it! #tlap
A2: #Empathy can be a hard concept to teach, but I love the challenge of helping my superheroes understand, feel and live someone else's experience! https://t.co/AlmsqoNPVu#tlap
A2- mine was financial literacy for 8 years old. The kids wanted new sports equipment for recess. They created a product, got a bank lone, learned about cost of product and profits. They marketed and sold their product. Made over $300 for new footballs and such. #tlap
Yes, I know I am struggling with division with 4th grade right now, I totally agree. #tlap Previous years we got it, this year its like a blank slate need to make it come alive... :-)
Love showing signs and grammar goofs in real life to use as illustrations. "Don't be that guy" kind of thing. I also tell Ss that I want them to sound smart and write well. Need to understand grammar to do that. #tlap
Hey, fellas!
Teachers will be looking for specific resources, so if you engage with the questions coming from @classroomchef, you may drum up more interest during #TLAP chat!
Writing narratives for primary students. Writing is difficult and to create a sorry that is interesting with limited skills is a challenge. And grammar for upper elementary. Bor-ing usually. But important. #tlap

A3: If an ingredient is missing, the recipe loses flavor. I try to shake things up as best as I can and engage the students. Teach the students the importance of flexibility. #tlap
A3: If an ingredient is missing, the recipe loses flavor. I try to shake things up as best as I can and engage the students. Teach the students the importance of flexibility. #tlap
A3 Ugh, wish I could say this never happens. You either make a quick substitution, or run to the grocery store between classes to get that ingredient. Worse comes to worse, make a note on the recipe for next time. #tlap
My dad, Eng/Hist T turned principal, had major issues with stores that use the 20 items or less checkout signs. :) Can still hear him in my head saying, "If you can count it, it's FEWER!" :) #tlap
A3: Bring in other condiments, make the dish more tasty. You can always smile at students, and get excited about them even if you're not excited about your content. #tlap
A3) Know the ingredients you have handy and see if you can mix together something that will suffice. By knowing your content and different pedagogy you can make an audible on the fly and save the lesson. #tlap
A3: I give opportunities for S's to add in that extra spice within the meat and potatoes lesson itself. Meat and potatoes becomes more when tenderized, marinated, and mixed up. Why can't we do that with our meat and potato lessons? We are our own limit. #tlap
A3 luckily I’m not the only one who gets to add to the lesson. In times like those turn to the Ss to see what they can add. We learn from each other #tlap
A3: I think the best kind of teachers will be able to prove their flexibility and change the course of the class as needed when ingredients are missing. #danielson#Domain3#tlap
A3: I give opportunities for S's to add in that extra spice within the meat and potatoes lesson itself. Meat and potatoes becomes more when tenderized, marinated, and mixed up. Why can't we do that with our meat and potato lessons? We are our own limit. #tlap
#tlap A3: When a lesson goes south, I improvise (bearing in mind that improvisation is a skill based on knowledge and practice whereas making things up is based on panic)
A3: Dance party! We have 100-minute periods, so when we ned to have one of those days, I plan in a dance party in the middle of class and again at the end. My 6-8 Ss know it's coming and work hard to earn it. #tlap
A3: use these days and times as opportunities to be real with the Ss. Model SEL skills like how to adapt, adjust, turn mistakes into successes, and be flexible learners #TLAP
A3. Ah...those days. This is why we have to develop adaptability and flexibility and hand over the learning to our students as often as possible! We model working through and learning from failure! #tlap
A3 Those are the "throwback" days when you bring up goodies from past learning. "This reminds me of..." "Wouldn't this be better with...?" Good for retaining learning to weave in and out of learning according to @AceThatTest#tlap
A3: Trying to add in as much flavor as you can is important. Using the resources around you such as virtual field-trips (if they relate to content) can take lessons to a whole other level. #tlap
A3 I look around the room, look at the clock, think fast, create a game, pass out blank paper (stalling tactic) and hope to have an idea once every S has a paper. At least it builds some curiosity. Fingers crossed that a S "guesses" what we are doing #tlap
A3: It's okay to be vulnerable. Share your MISTAKES and reflections with your Ss! They will have a new profound respect for you! Celebrate mistakes by screaming "Woo-Hoo!" 🎉 #tlap
A3: Stay calm. Keep moving. Utilize your students' creativity and their collaboration skills to extend and expand elements of your lesson that you know. #tlap
#tlap writing can be soooo fun! In my Spanish class, I’ve had students add “a fart”, “a cockroach “, “a thief”, etc and whoa! the stories are hilarious and naturally entertaining #langchat
A3. Ah...those days. This is why we have to develop adaptability and flexibility and hand over the learning to our students as often as possible! We model working through and learning from failure! #tlap
A3: If it's not working, then I change it! Even if it is in the middle of a lesson or teaching one hour differently than I taught a previous one. Part of teaching Ss to problem solve is by modeling. #tlap
A3. Also important to have some no-prep activities. My favorite is vocab challenges. Two kids stand facing the class with their backs to the word wall. Either a kid or I give a definition, example, synonym, etc. and the two students race to find the word #tlap
A3: Stop and ask the students, how is this going? What can we do to keep this from going down the drain. How can we save this lesson? Turn the disaster into a delicious dessert. Have #realtalk with your Ss! #tlap
A3: FUN is often the ingredient that is missing in the classroom, and yet probably the easiest to add! Students are awesome at being the sous chef to help add FUN when the recipe needs a little more! #tlap
A3: Honesty.
Teacher: Wow, today's lesson didn't go so well, did it?
Students: Nope!
T: How can I improve it for next time?
Students will forgive a failure and learn from our focus on growth.
#TLAP
Yes but 6th hour sometimes gets a worse version of me... #tlap
The same applies: "we have to keep adapting, keep improving..." even when you've hit that brick wall!
A3: Now that I think about it, my lesson today on unit rate left much to be desired. Need to spice it up. I now the semester is ending, but I need to finish strong. #tlap
A4: I am upfront and honest when trying something new and ask S's if they would be willing to try and either fail or succeed alongside me. When students see a risk-taking teacher, they will then follow suit within their learning. #tlap
Volume can make a big difference! When I taught 5th grade, I was surprised at how a little change like that could change then entire feel of the lesson. :) #tlap
A3: Now that I think about it, my lesson today on unit rate left much to be desired. Need to spice it up. I now the semester is ending, but I need to finish strong. #tlap
A3. Different ingredients can leave different things to be desired. Maybe it is a lack of participation, in which case, raising the energy level in any possible, if there is a piece missing in content, ask questions to students to figure out what is missing #tlap
A4: I tell my students what I am curious about. What books I am reading and what I am learning.
Currently, I’m learning how to code and I talk to my kids about that. They’re the experts in that! Haha. #tlap
A4: always trying new things w/ Ss - and letting them know it may not be "polished" but we're learning together! (ie - today w/2nd gr and iPads and #HourOfCode - and they were awesome!) #tlap
A4: one of the things that I think is so beneficial for students to see teachers doing is setting goals for ourselves. If we want them to be innovative and to achieve their goals, we have to show them that we do the same thing! It never stops. :) #tlap
A4: I work at being real with my Ss, at staying in the moment, at being vulnerable. I thrive on being silly with them, on seeing life through their eyes, on delighting in their presence with ever interaction. I strive to model what I want and expect from them. #tlap
A3: if I can’t find a suitable substitute, I look around at the ingredientsi do have and make something that will be successful. Teach the kids you have, not the ones you wish you had #tlap
A4 you serve up appetizers (chapter 5) #tlap "taking an idea and watching it flourish..." get the appetizer out there and let the students do something with it.
A4: I continue to ask questions and I love learning so my Ts and Ss can see that by the articles and information I share. I am not afraid to look silly and fail so risk taking is a must #tlap
A4: I think out loud. I talk about what I learned at PD/on Twitter/in a book. I tell Ss when I'm trying something new (like software, grading/feedback tool, strategy, etc.). I ask for their feedback and show them how I'm applying it. #tlap
A4 My students see curiosity everyday because I learn by doing and think out-loud. "I wonder what would happen if I...?" "Did you know...?" "That was cool! I didn't know that would happen!" #tlap
A4: Sometimes I ask questions that I don't know the answer to. These are the higher level questions that challenge the Ss to think above and beyond. It's fun to see what you get. I also have Ss keep me accountable for growing my practice as a teacher. #tlap
A4: I love when students ask a question I don’t know. Students love Googling the answer, so they can teach me. I also love the Explore button in Google Slides and Docs. I encourage students to utilize it whenever they can. #TLAP
A4: If I want Ss to get out of their comfort zones, then I have to as well. I push boundaries and model risk taking all the time. Maybe too much, actually. :) #tlap
A4: “hooks” and the art of questioning! Build interest days before... five then a reason to show up! Have them knocking down the door to get in👊💥 #tlap
A4: I'm such a curious person! When I come across a question, it needs to be answered. I think it's valuable to put the lesson on a pause if there is a Q that begs an answer, and search or demonstrate the answer! #tlap
A4: As a pre-service teacher, I know that I will make mistakes. I am not afraid to be vulnerable and want to be my genuine self. I have to lead by example, but that does not mean I have to be perfect. #tlap
A4: Recently I led a training for PDers, and one part didn't go well. So I asked them to suggest to me how they'd do it differently. They dug into the content I wanted them to understand, and I got some new ideas! #tlap
A4: Taking risks myself. They often hear me say, we're going to try this, and if it does not work, so what, we'll try something else. #gamification, #edtech, whatever. #tlap
A4 I think it's as simple as honesty. You want to model risk taking, then take risks and talk about the successes and the failures. Mess up, they'll tell you and forgive you, awesome lesson - they'll tell you AND come back next year and remember the awesome. #tlap
A4: Promoting a growth mindset in the classroom helps students feel safe even when they don't know all the answers. If students see you fostering a growth mindset and an attitude that says"mistakes help my brain to grow" then they will want to have that mindset too. #tlap
A4: Don’t be afraid of tangents and spontaneous discussions that can sidetrack you from the day’s plans. AKA, don’t be afraid to order off the menu. Sometimes those are the best meals you can get #tlap
A4: Don't be afraid to try something new and if it doesn't work out as planned, show your students it is okay to make mistakes! Have fun with it and make it a learning experience! #tlap
One of the biggest ways I engage Ss in risk taking is having our weekly class "Fail of the week" where I lead with how I've failed and learned how to improve. Let the Ss see you're human and willing to risk, explore and have curiosity to learn.#TLAP
A4- by being curious! We have learned to be "curious readers" For example, we read A Wrinkle in Time. Ss wanted to know if time travel could happen - so we researched it and had a competition to see who could explain it best using various materials. #tlap
A4: I model curiosity by asking myself questions and searching for answers. I model risk taking by celebrating my mistakes with my students. They actually clap for me when I miss up big time. #tlap
A4: Don't be afraid to try something new and if it doesn't work out as planned, show your students it is okay to make mistakes! Have fun with it and make it a learning experience! #tlap
interesting how many of us are talking about making mistakes as an answer to A4 re: risk taking. Clearly we see making mistakes as a risk still although we all see the value. How do we teach Ss that mistakes aren't a negative? #tlap
A4: I have "staff meetings" with my teacher candidates. I am their leader (principal) and I ask them to give honest feedback. I listen. And change happens. #tlap 😊👍🏼

A4: The benefit of working as a Sped T is I’m always having to help Ss in all areas, so I’m used to saying, “I don’t know the answer. Let’s figure it out together.” #TLAP
A4: I model curiosity by asking myself questions and searching for answers. I model risk taking by celebrating my mistakes with my students. They actually clap for me when I miss up big time. #tlap
When the staff feels like their opinions and voices are heard, the morale of the entire school rises. We have to listen and understand each other in order to survive in this cruel world! #tlap
RT @MarianaGSerrato: A4: Taking risks myself. They often hear me say, we're going to try this, and if it does not work, so what, we'll try something else. #gamification, #edtech, whatever. #tlap
I make mistakes on the regular. And I always make a big deal of pointing it out, learning from it, and laughing through it. Ss have become so much more forgiving of themselves seeing that their teacher can make mistakes too. #tlap
A4b: Admit and own it when wrong too. I said something incorrectly last week, a S corrected me, & I announced to class to write that down. I was wrong & S was right. That S sent me a calendar invite to the "Mrs. Steinbrink was wrong" event. :) #tlap
IMO, you model the recovery using a think aloud. Stating clearly that the mistake does not define you, your intelligence, aptitude or skills. Mistakes simply happen and we learn from them. #tlap
A4 Setting public goals and sharing progress along the way with students. Showing unsuccessful attempts and talking about how to make improvements. Keeping it real! #tlap

A5: 1. Take risks 2. Communicate. 3. Curiousity. Lots of it. When grandma would make stuffing for Thanksgiving, she never knew amount of sage needed. You just keep going until it tastes right. With curiosity, you have to keep asking. 4. Reflect for an hour. Let cool. #tlap

A5: I have the word "Refuge" actually tattooed on my shoulder to constantly remind myself that my future classroom will be a safe place for my students. Personality. Intentional rules. Morning meetings. They all contribute. #tlap

A5 Have some days where there is no wrong answers, only discoveries. That's a safe place to take risks. Other days make it about mastery. Remember Rita Pearson's +2! #tlap
A5 this list of ways to grow is on my door and in my kids homework folders. We refer to the drops 💧 frequently!! Wow, I’m taking a risk here!! Wow, I’m trying something new. The thinking on list is @DavidGeurin#tlap
A5 One part patience, two parts flexible, a fourth cup of (your choice), three and a half parts parent (because sometimes they need it), and five parts theatrical because you have five different periods or subjects. and a tenth at least of being pure crazy! #tlap
Why just last week a S asked me for help in Chemistry, and he was shocked when I asked one of our IB students for help (the kid I asked is amazing). No shame in asking for help. #tlap
A5: Thank Ss for making mistakes that we can all learn from. Point out what a valuable contribution they've made to the discussion. I'm especially thankful when Ss make mistakes I wasn't expecting or haven't seen before and I tell Ss they're making me a better teacher. #tlap
1 part curiosity (can substitute questioning in a pinch) 2 parts risk taking celebrated. Dash of passion. Handfuls of T and peer support. Set to simmer and embrace the journey (burnt ends and all) #tlap
A5: A recipe for a classroom that's a safe place for risk-taking has to start with a culture of mutual respect. We all have something that we bring to the classroom both Ts and Ss. We have then to have the humility to listen and work together to understand. #tlap
A5: A recipe for a classroom where it is safe to take risks has a community of students who trust and respect one another and the teacher promotes a growth mindset! #tlap
A5: not only does there need to be a strong relationship between the teacher and the student but also amongst the students. The proactive side of Restorative Practices and help with that #tlap
A5: I ask students if I can show their mistakes on the board. I reassure them that their mistake may help others. We take the leap together. Students with similar mistakes don’t need to hide. It becomes part of the culture. The class provides support and solutions. #tlap

A5 Recipe includes a T who is not the only one who plans and teaches in the room? Kids come up with great ideas, and input, and conversation, and jokes. Rapport, risk-taking, engagement, and not taking yourself too seriously. #tlap
A5: Having and teaching a growth mindset is key. Help students understand that the goal is to improve, and help others improve. Create an environment that fosters trust! #TLAP

A5: truly believe in what I just wrote to @MsJachymiak - Be honest. Be passionate. Love the Ss. Ask them for feedback. Listen to it. You can do it! #tlap And I’ll add, believe in them.
A5 I really like @responsiveclass approaches. Morning meetings set up a classroom culture of safety and respect. Celebrating effort, no matter the outcome, is key. #tlap

A6: The key is to ask the right questions until you get the students asking the questions... then you sit back and watch as learning takes place #loveoflearning#tlap
Well now, you chefs really know how to make an hour fly by. As we wrap up, we would like to encourage you to continue fostering curiosity and a risk-taking mentality in your students.

Cooked up some great ideas tonight everyone! Thanks @classroomchef for moderating! Remember to follow those with ideas that interest or challenge you! #tlap
A classroom needs to be passionate, empathetic, responsible, honest. Ss need to feel comfortable with the teacher AND with other Ss. Ss care about each other, and about the good in the world.
That is one of the best-tasting classroom recipes you could ever have :)
Thanks @classroomchef a very memorable chat this will be ... it was all about the meal. thanks for outlining your recipe for success in your book ... #tlap
Totally engaged in spite of developing migraine. We show up and are present even when we don’t feel well. Ss notice. Going to bed now, hopefully like my relaxed Schnauzer #tlap
