#miched Archive

The #michED chat is a grassroots effort dedicated to giving teachers, students, and parents across Michigan a bigger voice in the conversation about education in our state. We welcome all voices through a variety of projects, media, and social networking. We’re trying to address educational issues through apolitical conversation, spreading ideas and stories of success from Michigan classrooms across the state, and helping teachers and students regain the courage to connect and demonstrate that schools in Michigan are creating amazing opportunities for learning. We want the face and voice of education in Michigan to be a mural of shared experiences and positive examples of connected learning.

Q1: With the election of @gretchenwhitmer yesterday comes an opportunity for new questions. What education question would you hope the new Governor addresses first in her term? #michED
  • blocht574 Nov 7 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1: I would love to ask @gretchenwhitmer How she plans to attract teachers into the schools of most need? #michED and Retain them too!
  • techsavvyed Nov 7 @ 8:12 PM EST
A1: I hope the first thing that @gretchenwhitmer addresses in her term is "how do we better tackle poverty and its effects in schools?" #michED
  • blocht574 Nov 7 @ 8:12 PM EST
    Great question! #michED
    In reply to @techsavvyed, @gretchenwhitmer
  • techsavvyed Nov 7 @ 8:13 PM EST
That's a good one! I still come across friends and colleagues that don't understand how dire the shortage is, they thing it's just a local problem. #michED
    In reply to @blocht574, @gretchenwhitmer
  • blocht574 Nov 7 @ 8:14 PM EST
Huge problem state wide! Sub shortages, lack of new talent coming in to state, teachers burning out, leaders burning out.... #michED What do we do to attract and retain the BEST? (profession has been beaten down too long!!)
    In reply to @techsavvyed, @gretchenwhitmer
  • jrommel Nov 7 @ 8:15 PM EST
I hope @gretchenwhitmer listens to educators and that a strong leader is chosen for the department of education #miched
  • michEDchat - Moderator Nov 7 @ 8:17 PM EST
This is an excellent question! Especially with the department in flux and so many changes happening. #michED
  • michEDchat - Moderator Nov 7 @ 8:18 PM EST
Q2: If you had the new Governor's ear for five minutes, what would you want @gretchenwhitmer to know about your school? #michED
  • techsavvyed Nov 7 @ 8:20 PM EST
A2: If I had five minutes with the new Governor, I'd love to show her all of the amazing CTE classes and programs happening in my school. #michED @gretchenwhitmer
  • blocht574 Nov 7 @ 8:22 PM EST
A2: 5- Minutes I would talk about all the diverse needs our students have from ADD to ASD to ELL etc #michED and how hard our staff works to meet each individual students needs @gretchenwhitmer
  • SupfromYup Nov 7 @ 8:23 PM EST
A1) I would ask that she look at the funding report so that poverty districts get their due. #michED
  • jrommel Nov 7 @ 8:24 PM EST
A2/ more than anything I would want @gretchenwhitmer to know how much we care about kids, all of them, all parts of them, more than just the tested parts #miched
    • techsavvyed Nov 7 @ 8:20 PM EST

  • blocht574 Nov 7 @ 8:24 PM EST
Districts need to be funded for the services they provide their students ... not per student! @gretchenwhitmer Then we wouldn't fight over students and focus on providing QUALITY services #michED
    In reply to @SupfromYup, @gretchenwhitmer
  • SupfromYup Nov 7 @ 8:25 PM EST
A2); The results of what Blueprint can do for a district. And the strength it takes to implement it. #michED

  • blocht574 Nov 7 @ 8:29 PM EST
A2: Schools need incentives to collaborate .... #michED oh and we should! otherwise we keep re-inventing the wheel at HUGE $$$ @gretchenwhitmer
  • michEDchat - Moderator Nov 7 @ 8:29 PM EST
Q3: One of @gretchenwhitmer talking points on Education was to improve accountability. What would you hope that takes the shape of? #michED

A3: Schools need to be accountable to students and community so hopefully it means LOCAL control and more local voice! #michED @gretchenwhitmer NO MORE tests PLEASE
  • blocht574 Nov 7 @ 8:32 PM EST
A3: Schools need to be accountable but to whom? https://t.co/D7nALr65Mj #miched @gretchenwhitmer
  • techsavvyed Nov 7 @ 8:33 PM EST
I'd agree with you on local control. The state legislature has been taking more and more control away through limitations on spending, raising funds, and dragging feet on new teaching standards. #michED

A3) a shorter assessment (NWEA like) with quick results so that change can take place. #michED
  • blocht574 Nov 7 @ 8:35 PM EST
Definitely need instant turnaround on data this waiting till next year doesn't work! #michED @gretchenwhitmer
    In reply to @SupfromYup, @gretchenwhitmer
  • SupfromYup Nov 7 @ 8:35 PM EST
With local control we compare apples to bananas this accountability has to take place state wide. #michED
  • blocht574 Nov 7 @ 8:36 PM EST
A3: A change in the teacher evaluation laws to reflect what the BALL report intended not how the legislators mutated the law to fit their agendas #michED @gretchenwhitmer STOP evaluation teachers on data especially when they didn't teach content!
  • techsavvyed Nov 7 @ 8:37 PM EST
I would be behind this 100% Assessments with true meaning to them and ACTIONABLE data! Something teachers could start using immediately. #michED @gretchenwhitmer

  • blocht574 Nov 7 @ 8:37 PM EST
Does it? Shouldn't schools be accountable to local area? DON"T different schools have different goals, needs and points of pride? #miched
    In reply to @SupfromYup
  • DreaWeiner Nov 7 @ 8:38 PM EST
Some of this rests on the culture within education and within the school. People want to feel valued and that their work matters. Don't just rely on the teachers to put their students ahead of their own self-worth and self-respect. #miched
    • blocht574 Nov 7 @ 8:14 PM EST

Brian had it right. An NWEA-like assessment gives us a chance to make improvements. #michED
  • techsavvyed Nov 7 @ 8:40 PM EST
Do you think this is a powerful enough unifying theme among educators? That enough of us want/need reassurance from Lansing? #michED
    In reply to @DreaWeiner
  • mcculloughmg Nov 7 @ 8:41 PM EST
The 'like' part of that is important as NWEA is built on their own proprietary "learning continuum' which means it does not fit our own state or local teaching standards or curriculum. #miched

Yes! #miched @gretchenwhitmer you have an incredible network!
  • DreaWeiner Nov 7 @ 8:42 PM EST
I think this is two fold. We need recognition from the top down (including Lansing). We also need it from our local community and administration. #MichEd

We're about half-way through the chat, but still plenty of time to chime in on our "Tweets to the new Governor" #michED chat this evening. @gretchenwhitmer
  • blocht574 Nov 7 @ 8:44 PM EST
BUT many districts use NWEA data for teacher evaluations!! I agree we need a "like" vs the NWEA but $$$ to build it or is it already built? #miched @gretchenwhitmer
    In reply to @mcculloughmg, @gretchenwhitmer

It does if we let it, Down here in metro area the Pockets pull the students in via school of choice so everyone wants to keep up! Maybe won't work in rural areas #michED but maybe some combo system
    In reply to @SupfromYup
  • mcculloughmg Nov 7 @ 8:47 PM EST
It isn't built...and would be expensive. The issue is our standards are a 'to-do' list and not competencies and/or leveled with proficency scales. #miched

Q4: Let's get real about what @gretchenwhitmer will be able to do. Accountability and evaluation aren't going away. What would you hope the new Governor could do to work with the legislature in changing evaluation for the better? #michED
  • blocht574 Nov 7 @ 8:49 PM EST
But if not aligned with curriculum which is what we should teach... why are students growing? not directly due to teaching if test isn't aligned right #miched

A4) here is an issue. Why is it that we can't hold on to an assessment our evaluation for more than two years before we change it. #michED
  • mcculloughmg Nov 7 @ 8:51 PM EST
Evaluation should be based on the growth of the educators (which directly correlates to growth of students). 1 evaluation model for the state which is directly tied to research and professional development to improve teaching. Goal with definitive steps. #miched

  • mcculloughmg Nov 7 @ 8:53 PM EST
If 9 week goals are met, and 3 out of 4 for the year are met...you are effective. More awesome, less you are on a plan.... These goals should not only be test based but could be! #miched

  • mcculloughmg Nov 7 @ 8:56 PM EST
Lets be honest, most teachers are effective but need support and learning to improve. The evaluation model should be a coaching one to improve everyone....educators, students and our state! #miched @gretchenwhitmer

Q5: What positive steps from the current Governor would you want @gretchenwhitmer to accelerate? #michED
  • blocht574 Nov 7 @ 8:58 PM EST
Probably not: I would define it as join planning, sharing staff PD focusing on students learning together (ie: 6th grade ELA spend time planning together from neighboring districts) or evening doing building tours of each district to see how other do IT #miched
