CatholicEdChat is a twitter chat. Topics focus on discussions around educational issues for Catholic Educators and topics beneficial to Catholic Schools. We look forward to continuing to connect Catholic Educators online to discuss education and teaching with faith in our schools. The chat takes place on Saturday mornings. Time 9am EST.
Good morning everyone! Christy from sunny CA. It’s been a year since my husband’s stroke and I am starting to feel “normal” again. #prayerswork#catholicedchat
A1 Words that come together to express feeling in a lyrical format. I don’t teach poetry but I do write it! And my students do a video poetry project. #catholicedchat
Good morning from a cold but sunny Chicago #CatholicEdChat! I’m Amy, an ELA teacher and doctorate student in C&I at @LoyolaChicago (you know, that Cinderella team from the Final Four).
A1, Poetry to a bit of a mystery for me. I have always gravitated to the funny stuff, just like my students. Shel Silverstein is just so silly. #CatholicEdChat
A1: I know English teachers everywhere will cringe at my answer but...I consider it a short piece of writing focused on a topic that has a flow to it. There is a pulse when you read it. #CatholicEdChat
A1 Here's a definition I find really useful with students, stolen from our lit anthology: Poetry is “A highly charged form of literature in which every word is packed with meaning." #catholicedchat
So I have heard from my sister! Hey, don't ask us for water this summer. LOL! ;-) Enjoy the sunshine. It will be back here soon enough. #CatholicEdChat
A1: poetry is like... writing at its most elemental. It’s words, arranged for a purpose, to express the inexpressible. Whether it’s grief or joy or just observation- poems give words to our innermost feelings. #CatholicEdchat
A1 I’d say poetry is a form of writing where language is used in a rhythmic pattern of some kind, usually conveying or provoking an emotion. #CatholicEdChat

And poetry is powerful because you can carry it in your heart in a way you can’t with other art forms. How many of us have complete poems/lyrics/rhymes memorized? 💜 #CatholicEdchat
A2 I don't Lit anymore, but when I did I loved this resource from Nancie Atwell, great for Nat Poetry Month, but al for the entire year: https://t.co/pcWYryXS9o#catholicedchat
A2: I’m not sure but it’s something I’ll look into. A school I was at used to do “poem in your pocket” where at anytime a teacher could ask Ss to recite a poem and they’d have to have one on them. #CatholicEdChat
A2: we LOVE National Poetry month. We read and write poems each day. And we pick a day to head out into the world to write our favorite poems in chalk- always a special day for us! #CatholicEdchat
Bp Robert @MorneauRobert writes, analyzes and recites poetry. His favorites Jessica Powers and Emily Dickinson check out Poetry As Prayer: Jessica Powers (The Poetry As Prayer Series) #CatholicEdChat
A2: Honestly, I have no idea. I am going to check in with our English Department (@cgwadbrook, @therealrojas, @LookingForLater) on Monday as I have never heard of National Poetry Month and I think they have already covered their poetry units. #CatholicEdChat
A2:
Poem a Day daily email is a nice place to start; I pick and choose; I also have life size poetry kits I made, like magnetic poetry but we use card stock and carpet to make our poems #catholicedchat

A2 I have a chalkboard ledge full of a variety of poetry books. Throughout the month we will be looking closely at a variety of styles and we will be creating a “poetry wreath” with our favorites. #CatholicEdChat
A2 Seems like it can be quickly incorporated into almost any discipline. Have students write a short (4 lines?) poem that helps them remember something about the current topic. #catholicedchat
A2: before break Ss started to explore poetry wonders @wonderopolis when we get back, going to start with some of the poetry activities using @Seesaw#catholicedchat
I've got to run (daughter's volleyball calls), but here is a last resource I wanted to share, Poetry 180 from Billy Collins and LoC, another daily poetry resource, mostly for high schools: https://t.co/dV4SjwJnl7#catholicedchat
Yes. I often point out how many other poetical devices free verse poems have, such as similes, metaphors, personification, alliteration, onomatopoeia, repetition, etc. #CatholicEdChat
You know you have found a poetry lover when they can just bust out a poem from memory. I’m very impressed! This has never been something I can do. #CatholicEdChat
I love sharing good ideas, why keep it in only my classroom? I have collected a variety of clip art templates and put them in a shared Google file. Ss build their wreaths in a share google slide show. They will be able to see each other’s wreaths form. #CatholicEdChat
I memorized Longfellow’s (very long poem) “Paul Revere’s Ride” in seventh grade for a speech contest. I still remember the first two stanzas! #CatholicEdChat

A3: I always try to work in the classic Frost "Road Less Traveled" poem. My kids need that; a lot of tough issues at home and adversity to overcome #catholicedchat
A1 Poetry always has a sense of the aethsetic, the beauty of the English language with its rhyme and beat and rhythm. When you want to portray the truth, poetry or art are hard to beat.
#catholicedchat
Yep, I think we may be doing this too. Thx Julia! Who doesn’t love sidewalk chalk art? Am I right? I know I will be playing with it too! #CatholicEdChat
A3 There are several that stick with me from my senior year experience in Buck Offutt’s Brit Lit: Ozymandias, To A Mouse, To A Skylark, and Elegy Written in a Country Churchyard. #catholicedchat
A3: my students’ favorite poem tends to be This is Just to Say. We do apology poems off of it using Joyce Sidman’s book to inspire us and they are always hysterical! #CatholicEdChat
A3 Mama put my guns in the ground
I can't shoot them anymore
That cold black cloud is comin' down
Feels like I'm knockin' on heaven's door #catholicedchat
A3: Full disclosure--I'm not a poetry "fan". Too much overanalyzing in HS killed it for me. But I find that some of my favorite "verse" are prayers and the Book of Psalms. (And I'm not just sayin that to get brownie points LOL!) #CatholicEdChat
A3) My favorite poem is Psalm 23. At approximately three thousand years old (i.e., per King David), it could be considered a little... "vintage"! #CatholicEdChat
A1 Many Yrs ago I read a quote attributed to Carl Jung “If you were to take all that medicine&psychology tell us is good mental health&get the worlds best poets to distill this information into the best poetry, you would have an awkward version of the Beatitudes”
#catholicedchat
The Bible is full of poems! And they can be turned into songs “Turn, Turn, Turn” by The Byrds is a perfect example. My favorite verse from Ecclesiates! #CatholicEdChat
I remember that poem from my childhood. But it was often used in the context of: what day were you born on, OOOH, that explains it...not very heartening for children. #CatholicEdChat
A3: I really like "Nothing Gold Can Stay" by Frost. And not just because it is in "The Outsiders"! I do also like a lot of the truth work. #CatholicEdChat
Just discussed this before break! Ss were asking about how the Bible was divided and I explained each section and used “Turn, Turn, Turn”...kids enjoyed it! #CatholicEdChat
I used to not enjoy poetry even as an MS ELA teacher until I saw the beauty in the systematic nature of great poetry. I taught it more as a mathematical concept to help students "get it". #CatholicEdChat
Indeed! Not just in stand alone books such as the Psalms or Song of Songs. You find examples in Gospels (eg Beatitudes Matthew 5) and the Letters such as 1Corinthians 13 1-13). #CatholicEdchat
So sad to leave but my husband is our church’s music minister and he has a funeral which means my mom hat is back on! I so enjoyed this chat! Blessings on all for the week ahead! #catholicedchat
A5: I would almost have to say the simple forms like haiku or limerick. On the surface they appear so straightforward that students don't see the craft that goes into choosing just the right words. #CatholicEdChat
A5: Haiku and Limerick are both easy. Kids love writing haiku, too. Limericks are harder to write b/c of set rhymes and rhythm—but oh when you get a good one! 😊 #CatholicEdchat
And just WHY do we keep doing this (killing great literature) in HS? Maybe her teacher had taken that comparison on for his/her Masters and decided to have 100+ HS students help out? #CatholicEdChat
A5: not really. I tried to chunk the unit so there were fun poems of each type. Now, with a different curriculum, I’ll just be adding to the district choices. #CatholicEdchat
That teacher killed a whole year of literature for Briana. She dropped Honors/AP English that year and stayed with regular so she could go back to enjoying books #CatholicEdchat Oh and that teacher got fired eventually.
Honestly, I was never taught to annotate and I think I am a fine reader. I see what kids hav to do (even my grade-school son) with annotating and it just kills me. There is little reason to read just to read for our kids! #CatholicEdChat
A6 Maybe we can do a dress down day at school for Poetry in Your Pocket Day and the “pass” to be out of uniform is the poem in their pocket. #catholicedchat
#CatholicEdchat Just a reminder that if you are interested in the Bearing Witness Summer Institute (FREE weeklong PD open to English, Social Studies and Religion teachers 6-12) the applications are due April 15th https://t.co/HjWUn5yMtN Fantastic program! Please share @NCEATALK
It is a very complex issue as to why teachers think it needs to be taught this way. I recommend reading Readicide by Kelly Gallagher https://t.co/vVrTOpbdd1#CatholicEdChat
In reply to
@MicheleCMueller, @APannie7, @ChristineMonge
I did this workshop years ago when it was in OC. Best PD I ever had-even if you don’t teach those subjects. I grew so much as an educator and my understanding of tolerance. #CatholicEdChat
Although there are not a lot of "poems" per se, now available for pre-order is my new book "Called to Pray: Daily Prayer for Catholic Schools" (due out this fall from @avemariapress)! Prayer makes a difference in our Catholic schools! #CatholicEdChathttps://t.co/4hmw6oGHJG
