Our first question is coming up; let’s get ready to chat! Please preface your responses with A1) Excited to collaborate and share ideas with you today about digital citizenship for GT students. #gtchat
A1) Digital literacy involves a firm grasp on technology vocabulary, comprehending the impact of online collaboration, understanding the how to use cloud-based storage, and acknowledging the moral consequences of one’s actions. #gtchat
A1. Digital literacy is confidence in using digital tools and applying and adapting them in real world contexts in practical and relevant ways. #gtchat
A1) Digital literacy is the ability to successfully use a range of digital technology. It is vitally important for students to be able to communicate safely and appropriately with others around the world #gtchat
A1) GT students must develop specific skill-sets based on authentic learning opportunities including creation of collaborative engagement involving discussion built on credible arguments, negating others’ opinions & effective presentations (Coiro, 2016.) #gtchat
A1) Social media has blurred the boundaries of literary genres -- interacting with constructed reality has become part of our SS' daily engagement. We must help them navigate well. #gtchat

A1) It’s important to not assume a new generation – digital natives – are automatically highly qualified digital citizens; they require guidance as well. #gtchat
I wrote about this debate for my Masters. They are born into it and have digital skills but can't always apply the skills to learning situations. I critiqued Prensky's work. The debate has caused a lot of misunderstanding and issues. #gtchat
A2) #gtchat I think talking and modeling is important. I think kids can be impulsive and they don’t understand the positive or negative potential results #gtchat
A2) Students are encountering new technologies & choices at breakneck speeds; developing a moral construct is essential to providing them with a safe and responsible online presence. #gtchat

This is the link to the Lit Review of the Digital Natives vs Digital Immigrant debate if anyone is interested. This causes so many issues for our kids - they have skills but can't always apply digital skills to learning. https://t.co/1qys4EU5ah#gtchat
Agreed! Because they have digital info so readily available, it's important they have digital literacy. Here's an article with resources fr Ts from @hgse#gtchathttps://t.co/ilWFdzBGdx
A2. This is a crowdsourced resource that you might like - and might like to add to. Digital Citizenship resources on Google Slides. Lots of fantastic resources added by Ts and Ss. https://t.co/PgN5sgKUv8#gtchat
A1) GT students must develop specific skill-sets based on authentic learning opportunities including creation of collaborative engagement involving discussion built on credible arguments, negating others’ opinions & effective presentations (Coiro, 2016.) #gtchat
A2) Educating students about the consequences of online behavior must start early. Ss must learn about the instantaneous nature of their actions; their right to privacy and how to protect it; and the far reaching effects of cyberbullying. #gtchat
A2) Students need to be made aware that their digital footprint will remain and may influence their respect and credibility when seeking employment or proposing solutions to problems #gtchat
A3) GT students are poised to use social media to their benefit by exploiting the positive aspects of its use – connecting classrooms, fostering cross-cultural interactions, and choosing it for advocating positive change in the world. #gtchat
A3. Benefits are collaboration - locally and globally and everyone has a voice - especially the quiet students who may not always be comfortable speaking up in front of others or who may need more time to think. #gtchat
A3) Social media allows GT students to connect with people outside their classroom walls who also share high degrees of giftedness in particular domains. Google Classroom allows for teachers to easily differentiate for GT Ss. #gtchat
A3) Social media allows students to communicate with mentors, true peers, people with similar interests and challenges as themselves around the world #gtchat
We are already halfway through our chat! Thank you for sharing so many inspiring thoughts about digital citizenship for GT students! Please remember to use the #gtchat hashtag to participate in the conversation. #gtchat
A3) Social media allows GT students to connect with people outside their classroom walls who also share high degrees of giftedness in particular domains. Google Classroom allows for teachers to easily differentiate for GT Ss. #gtchat
A3 Social media can provide an opportunity to connect w/ others with similar interests as well as connect w/ experts in fields Ss are interested in; also allows for a wider & authentic audience to share their voice & work #gtchat
A3) GT students can benefit from social media via online mentorships, connecting with professionals in their chosen fields, and promoting critical thinking among intellectual peers. #gtchat
A3 Social media can provide an opportunity to connect w/ others with similar interests as well as connect w/ experts in fields Ss are interested in; also allows for a wider & authentic audience to share their voice & work #gtchat
A4) Teachers should model digital etiquette from the very beginning of student interaction. Goals vertically aligned across the curriculum involving digital citizenship can increase learning & provide Ss with an enhanced online presence. #gtchat
A3) Social media allows everyone to connect with like-minded people, including experts and authors (especially on Twitter). It provides access they can’t get in their everyday experience. #gtchat
A3) Social Media is more than an outlet for expressions: SS must learn to analyze various social media as a text: What’s the purpose & theme? structure? function? politics? audience? tone & mood? what impact does it create? #gtchat
A4. Definitely blogging. I've been blogging with students since 2010 and it's a powerful way to teach digital citizenship. Also ePals https://t.co/wMJNH1jv9V Started using this in about 2006 I think? Awesome global learning envt. #gtchat
A4) Direct instruction because so many Ss need foundational knowledge. I had to model how to paraphrase from a website because many Ss were not paraphrasing properly #gtchat
A4) Strategies for teaching digital citizenship include a robust curriculum, including #stuvoice in developing acceptable use policies, and impressing on students that what they do and say online is forever. #gtchat
A2) One way is to post something and have your connections share it, and their connections share it, to demonstrate how far it goes. It’s also important to focus on more than negative consequences. How can this ability spread awareness or otherwise make positive change? #gtchat
I just tuned into #GTChat. A3: as the mom of GT kids, our online community meant that even if GT was not recognized in their school, town, state, they could find relatable experiences from kids across the world. And I get priceless GT parent tips.Virtual friendships—>IRL friends.
A4) Additional strategies for teaching digital citizenship include making sure Ss know their rights online, providing guidance for online behavior, and including parents in the learning process; especially relating to new technologies. #gtchat

A4: Teachers should be teaching kids to act as civilly online as they would be if they lived Nextdoor to their #SoMe friends. Don’t post anything you wouldn’t want out on a billboard with your name. Check sources. Keep trusted adults in the loop. #GTChat
A5) GT students need to be digital producers; not just consumers. Digital leaders are those who integrate technology to make life better for all through facilitating communication and by being transformative change agents. #gtchat
A3) One rather large benefit is sometimes our GT Ss can feel rather isolated in the school, but being able to connect with other GT Ss in the district, state, or nation gives them a sense of community. #gtchat
A4) Teachers can collaborate with colleagues to organize Twitter sessions, Mystery Skype calls and virtual excursions to museums and lectures. They can teach students research and evaluation and use of blogging, webinars and media creation #gtchat
A5) All connected people should be digital leaders, but GT students may grow up to have leadership roles or particular expertise that's sought after. It's important they demonstrate the ability to interact online with all sorts of people. #gtchat
A5) From GT coursework, we learned that GT students have greater potential to be leaders in society. Now that so much of "society" is online, GT kids must master how to communicate and collaborate digitally to expand both people to learn from and teach #gtchat

This is true. I've been thinking a lot about gifted kids in rural populations where their numbers may be small. Gives them a much wider audience. #gtchat

Love this! When students see adults in their lives using digital etiquette and discussing THEIR positive and negative experiences, there can be a richer learning experience. #gtchat#DigitalCitizenship
A5) GT students as digital leaders are those who value collaboration, understand how to integrate technology into their lives to increase positive outcomes, and embrace change to harness the future. #gtchat
A1 Aimee Park, gifted teacher @DCJHSTigers. Digital literacy is the ability to use a mode of technology to effectively learn and execute all forms of reading and writing. #gtchat
A5) GT Ss get a lot out of creating. It cements the content and causes them to dig deeper. GT students can be great leaders when given an opportunity and allowed to use their interests. #gtchat
A5) GT students who become digital leaders are flexible in their thinking, adept at problem solving, and analytical in their approach to global problems. #gtchat
A1 Aimee Park, gifted teacher @DCJHSTigers. Digital literacy is the ability to use a mode of technology to effectively learn and execute all forms of reading and writing. #gtchat
A2 Through some form of comprehensible, true-to-life digital citizenship classes. I teach it by telling stories of adults in real life getting in trouble for doing and saying things online. I teach 8th and 9th grade. Seeing is believing. #gtchat
A6) Digital citizenship goes far beyond the classroom walls. It is an integral part of life and as such must be addressed at home as well as at school. Parents should be encouraged to be a part of the education process. #gtchat
A5: GT kids can synthesize material and utilize abstract thinking ahead of their chronological peers. Using their skill sets in a socially conscience way is an outlet for them to celebrate their giftedness, collaborate and be accepted for their contributions to groups.#GTChat
A6) Schools can involve parents in teaching digital citizenship by informing them about new technologies, online trends, and the latest social media. This can be done through parent-teacher communications or even workshops. #gtchat
A3 Social media plays a VITAL role in my classroom. I have a class Insta and Twitter. I use them as educational and reward tools for my students. If you want to play, you must get in the playground. I also invite parents to follow me as well! #gtchat
A6. It also helps parents understand what is happening at school in terms of what Ss are learning and how they're using digital tools - that they're not just 'playing on computers' all day. #gtchat
A5) When you say that you are a digital leader that means you have followers; they are earned & proven, not entitled & given. Digital leadership = intellectual character & integrity on how you use it but also what you make out of how you use it #gtchat
A6) Schools need to keep parents informed about their child's learning to allay their fears and misunderstandings and in some situations parental permission is needed #gtchat
A6. It helps parents understand the learning power that digital tech has - that's it's not the scary thing they sometimes perceive it to be. There are a lot of misconceptions out there - particularly for our younger students. #gtchat
Also, subpopulations of GT kids find it harder to fit in even with a typical GT group: PG kids, LGBT PGlets, twice exceptional. When the numbers get small locally, reach out more globally online! #GTChat
A4) Use real life examples - like when a celeb gets in trouble for saying something inappropriate on SM. Kids don’t believe it can happen to them. It has to be real with real examples of consequences. #gtchat
Seeing all the resources shared tonight made me a bit overwhelmed. There is so MUCH content online that teachers and admin need time to wade through the resources to adapt in our curriculums. #gtchat

I agree Justin. I curate from this and share in our gifted and talented teachers FB group so that people can take time when they have it and revisit. #gtchat
