Thank you for visiting #ksedchat. We welcome all educators to our chat that runs Mondays at 8 p.m. Central. Though many of our educators have their homes in Kansas, all teachers are welcome to pop in and join in on the learning.
Hello #ksedchat ! I am an Instructional Coach in the Seaman school district and I am passionate about personalized PD, that's why I'm here tonight! I want to offer more opportunities for my staff to get what they need, not just sit and listen to what I'm giving.
Mike Poliquin, new to Conway Springs HS (Principles of Algebra, Algebra 1, Algebra 2), passionate about helping students learn leadership, first to lead themselves and then to build relationships with others #ksedchat
Jill Dodge, Eudora Elementary, School Librarian. I am passionate about helping kids find books they love & helping them fall in love with reading. #ksedchat
Anna, gifted facilitator in Andover. I prefer it when my PD is personalized and see my role as a provider of pd in the gifted realm in my 2 schools. #ksedchat
Tiffany Terrell- Kindergarten teacher at Erie Elementary! I am passionate about teaching reading skills to students and watching them grow as beginning readers! #ksedchat
Good evening, TJ Warsnak from Halstead HS. I teach history and econ. Currently passionate about find innovative ways to engage students with social studies content. #ksedchat
A1: Have had both. With personalized, I felt excited, not thinking about other things I could be doing. Personalized really pushed me to take risks. #ksedchat
A1: Depending on the topic I can be very engaged, but, as I was a SS teacher, I was often lumped in with ELA and was often left uninspired as my content area did not seem important enough to warrant subject specific PD. Had to seek that on my own. #ksedchat
A1: I find that I can ALWAYS get something out of PD if I choose to. Sometimes I have to really think about how it impacts me and other times it seems like the PD was written just for me. #ksedchat
A1: Kinda like a cheap buffet, it gets the job done but leaves you feeling like there are better things out there. Found having an open mind helps. #ksedchat
Traditional PD has been okay, but I'm the guy who wants to try the stuff. Con -- veterans can squash newbies' enthusiasm with cynicism. Pro -- I like hearing from accomplished veterans in education, and mostly those have been the presenters I've seen. #ksedchat
#ksedchat A2 the most impt thing I have done was go to ISTE and start an international PLN, then keep it growing....the there is this thing called Podstock
A1:Pros- Loved national speakers like @gcouros@rickwormeli2@beritgordon brought in Cons: Lots of "Sit & Get" Difficult to differentiate for experience & needs of Ts. #ksedchat
A2: Last fall I was given a name to everything I've always believed about teaching: Trauma-Informed/Trauma-Responsive. Since that time, I've been soaking up everything I can get my hands on in this area! #ksedchat
A1 When I started teaching I didn't enjoy PD--was based on experiences but not necessarily data or research-driven. I get a lot out of PD that has ideas based on those. Plus I enjoy PD where I can use ideas or resources in the classroom immediately #ksedchat
Jumping in a little late! A1: some PD has been great. I’ve felt like I’ve always learned more when I am interested in the topic or if it pertains to my content area! Think students. If they aren’t engaged or excited... what happens?! Same goes for educators! #ksedchat
A2: Attending conferences where I can hear from someone outside of my building a district and get a new fresh perspective on things. I also love having the opportunity to share that learning with the teachers in my building. #ksedchat
A1: I have had good and bad experiences with PD. Experiences where the information is really amazing and even a but overwhelming, but I have also had experiences where I didn’t get much out of it and thought “why am I here”. #ksedchat
A2: Really reflecting on my teaching each day, making notes for the future and evaluating how it can improve. This led to some huge strides of improvement in my teaching. #ksedchat
A2) I got to spend a week at @MountVernon doing the George Washington Teacher Institute hosted by @GWBooks - It was the best week of my professional career & one of the best overall weeks of my life. Collaborated w/ Ts from across the country and made lifelong friends! #ksedchat
A1) When new to the field (4 yrs ago) and therefore more in need of ideas than others, I enjoyed being served ideas and tools! Now, with my feet under me, I have enough work figured out for myself to focus upon. New ideas are great, but my plate is already full now! #ksedchat
I'm focused on leadership now, reading and re-reading Extreme Ownership by @leifbabin and @jockowillink. I plan to adapt these ideas from military combat experience to the classroom. I have also spent time studying game-based learning and gamification. #ksedchat
#ksedchat A1 experience varies. If I'm in the right frame of mind I can always get something out of it, although it might not always be exactly what I need in that moment.
A2: I just got back from the Ron Clark Academy on Saturday. It was so amazing!! My mind hasn’t stopped thinking of idea with ways to incorporate what they do in my classroom and school. #ksedchat
A2. When I started seeking out PDs that fit areas I wanted to grow in and doing what I could to get there and pay for it. Or finding free ones and connecting with edu rockstars! #ksedchat
A2 Honestly, just going to PD. I hate leaving my classroom or family, but if there is a good conference that takes me away for a day or two I try to go. These experiences are so good for me as an educator, esp as I've just stepped back in classroom this past yr #ksedchat
Brad from Atchison, K-5 Music... Relaxing and chilling to Stevie Wonder's "Songs in the Key of Life" on vinyl after a long day working in my yard...Stevie goodness... Never gets old!!! #ksedchat#musedchat
A3) My school is redesigning so this will need to happen a lot this year. We will be going out and researching and bringing things back. However, Ts will still have to make it their own. Time and place for everything. #ksedchat
Q3 We should all do PD in one room together when we get to get our hands dirty and it applies to all of us. Unfortunately, that kind of PD is rare. We still do it because someone organized PD to check a box instead of to change the game. #ksedchat
Q3: I think this where @PrincipalPaul ‘s work with badges is going to be huge! I also think that Admin need to make sure they are always using Best Practices when leading and point out what they are doing! @ccouchman is STELLAR at this! #ksedchat
A3: I think we still do it because it is the easiest way to provide required PD for teachers. We must get this many hours, so let's knock it all out together and this one person is going to present everything today. #ksedchat
A2) I got on Twitter and discovered so many people who had thought my thoughts before me- and are further into their journey regarding them. Speeds up my learning by talking with them. Opening up communication channels with over practitioners has had the MOST impact. #ksedchat
A3: I think we fix it by empowering teachers to find a way to make PD work for them and to give them the freedom to learn in their own way and in their own time, rather than forcing them into sit & get. #ksedchat
A1: I have found traditional PD to be lackluster at best. It is usually overly generic to appeal to everyone and ends up not appealing to anyone. My best PD has not been traditional. Wouldn’t it be awesome if we were each given our own PD budget each year?! #ksedchat
A3) I think we have to accept that we have meetings and trainings which often take place with everyone in the same place, but PD needs to be personalized in order to get the most out of it. Trust educators to be professionals and seek what they need to grow! #ksedchat
@ksedleader has done this at @mhmaravens several times. I liked it because I got to talk to awesome colleagues about things we chose to discuss. #ksedchat

A2: The best thing I have done is sought out my own PD and followed other awesome educators on Twitter to see what they are up to. I have had some fantastic—meaningful—experiences this last year and have more coming up this summer. #ksedchat
A3) We do have some PD time where we can visit other classrooms or work on what we need to work on and then report back. Andover is the 1st district I have been that does that. #ksedchat
A3: figure out what staff is genuinely interested in learning about. There are SO many new and exciting concepts/advancements in education but no time for staff to research and really figure out what to invest time and energy into. #ksedchat
@jockowillink has done some work on social-emotional education already ... it's a book called "The Way of the Warrior Kid." My daughters love it! #ksedchat

@zlatnikj, @LeifBabin, @jockowillink, @jockowillink
A3) We fix it by telling admins what we need (open time/schedules). If we can show them the results of that freedom by our practice or products, why wouldn’t they embrace it? Then again, I wouldn’t mind a show-and-tell day with peers to see what they’re up to. #ksedchat
Q3 I think it's really importnat that we do some PD with stuff coming from OUTSIDE the education bubble. That's what drew me to leadership -- it is applicable at multiple levels in all environments. #ksedchat
A3-Because irs always been done that way. We’re slowly getting away from this in my building. I’ve tried to get Ts in my building together to do teacher driven PD, but scheduling doesn’t always work. I’ll keep trying. #ksedchat
This has been a powerful way to connect w Ts across our district & get into each other's classrooms even though we are not in the same building. #ksedchat
A4 Leadership ideas from outside education is where I am now; I think Game Design would be an awesome area to explore to give math classes more meaningful (to the students) missions. #ksedchat
A4: I want to travel the state and visit classrooms of all the amazing teachers I have met through #ksedchat. I would love to see all the greatness in action and take back ideas to my classroom.
As a coach I want to continue to grow and develop my coaching skills, but I am the only one in my building so I have to seek out other opportunities and work with the other coaches in my district. #ksedchat
A1 - Traditional PD tends to be "one and done" workshops with little to no content retained or used (probably because it's taught in a lecture-format, which students don't retain much from either!) Practical PD must be envisioned and brainstormed by staff. #ksedchat
A4) Just finishing my first year as an admin. and I have so much to learn as I spent most of the year trying to keep my head above water. I look forward to finding new ways to engage our staff next year, improve our IPS programming, etc. Collaborating is the best way! #ksedchat
breakout edu WILL happen this year in my room. I could have at @mhmaravens, but I allowed myself to get frozen by some adversity. No excuses, and now that I am starting anew in Conway Springs, I'm going to get after it. #ksedchat
A4: I am still looking for the right way to structure classes and provide feedback where students a more self driven to revise and improve their work and learning. Been in ongoing discussions w/ other Ts. #ksedchat
A4) as a designer of district PD, I talk to Ts about how to do it better. It’s a delicate balance b/w district mission, my goals for SocStEd and what teachers want. Seeing it as time to innovate for me. I also read like crazy. #ksedchat
A4) I just finished my Masters so I just want some time to apply what I have learned. That cannot be done in a day. Yet this is part of PD that is overlooked. This is something that will take time and teachers to collaborate with as I do not teach a core class. #ksedchat
#ksedchat A1: I have done book studies (some great [Leader in Me] some not) or administration presenting a new topic/strategy/tool. Pro: I know exactly what administration wants, Con: It may/may not be what I want. :)
A4: I’d like to study which learning styles contribute to a growth in social/emotional learning or skills! If I can teach my students my content and help them grow as a person, I’d be the happiest teacher ever! #ksedchat
A2) My PD has occured in a variety of ways, via professional associations such as @NAfME@AOSA1968@kneanews@NEAToday and experiences w/ @ksdehq As a musician, I am always practicing as well. Twitter has been amazing this year too! #ksedchat
A4 cont: Collaborating with other administrators from around the area and state to brainstorm how to tackle the challenges that we are all facing. We all get better together, its the only way! #ksedchat
A3: Great question! We all advocate for individualized instruction for students. Why don’t we feel the same way about teachers’ learning? Obviously there are some things an entire staff needs together, but that is not true of most things. #ksedchat
A4: I would like to incorporate more tech and stem into my classroom. I would love to visit other classrooms and speak with teachers that already are doing great things in their classrooms and bring back those ideas to my classroom! #ksedchat
A4. I’m always looking for better ways to be Ss driven. Or ways to integrate tech. For me, I need discussion and time to play. Not traditional PD. #ksedchat
A4 Traditional PD is great for teaching and sharing ideas & resources. But I'd love to see an entire class period, from start to finish, and see how, say, a blended classroom uses these ideas & resources. I guess I'm looking for people & classes to observe! #ksedchat
A4: I really want the opportunity to see firsthand what other teachers and schools are doing both in and out of state. There are so many phenomenal educators out there. I wish we had more time, money, and support to learn from each other. #ksedchat
A3) I would love to establish my own PD plan with administrator involvement, so that I could truly delve into areas of Ss needs and personal passion. #ksedchat
A4: Attending @Flipgrid PD this summer w @MrsJankord also lots of professional reading including Mindset Mathematics for Grade 5 by @joboaler@jenmunson & Cathy Williams
A4: Great to see everyone wants to visit other classrooms. Does any school or district help get this done? Because I haven't seen it succeed, though I have seen it attempted. #ksedchat
This is one of my big pushes this last year as we started implementing a #pineapplechart, teachers need to see it in action in each other's classrooms for it to be impactful. #ksedchat
A4: I want to see innovative teachers in ACTION! I want to visit schools and talk with real teachers about what they are doing and then be able to BRING it home to my classroom. #ksedchat
A5) Building in time to inservice day schedules and giving it to teachers to seek what they need to grow and provide a better experience for students. You have to be purposeful and schedule the time in. Otherwise it will not happen. Then reflect and share. #ksedchat
The district I was in @USD443 allowed teachers to take school leave to visit other schools. They also scheduled peer walkthroughs which was helpful both in visiting and discussions. #Ksedchat
What would happen if everyone in this chat today tweeted out one thing they did each day to the #ksedchat hashtag? We could curate an amazing amount of greatness!
A4: Great to see everyone wants to visit other classrooms. Does any school or district help get this done? Because I haven't seen it succeed, though I have seen it attempted. #ksedchat
In CA we were required to observe 3 classes in order to get our clear credential--sub pay was built into our programs because they felt it was impt as beg Ts to observe others. Even as a "veteran" teacher I've benefitted so much from observing other Ts, though! #ksedchat
A5: I think w Redesign schools know what they need to focus on based on mission/vision that was created during the first few meetings! Use that to create plans with your BLT and always checking back w the rest of the staff! #ksedchat
A5) Fantastic question! Again, I suspect it will be simpler than it seems to transition, but I’d like to add that after a more open approach we still need to have SOMETHING to show for it. It can’t be open season and no results. #ksedchat
A5: I think that when teachers teach other teachers, it becomes more powerful and the buy-in is most often higher. Allowing them time to observe the amazing things happening even inside their building is a great way to get in valuable PD #ksedchat
As I begin incorporating my leadership ideas, my blog posts at https://t.co/y3DsYzhTWI will have some reflection (tweets when I post). I wouldn't have something new each day but there'd be a sense of progress and accounts of major challenges. #ksedchat
Maybe whomever would like to visit other Ts' classes could tweet whenever they have a free day next year (day after conferences, maybe work days?), and Ts who would like to welcome a visitor could respond to that tweet? #ksedchat
A5: Putting the ball in teacher's hands and having them create a plan that they want to follow throughout the year in addition to the required PD. They pick the time, topic, location, and mode of learning, then document and present on what they participated in. #ksedchat
A5: I just did my very first Edcamp and I loved that it was teachers, administrators, board members, parents and even a student from across districts. Having all the stakeholders kept the conversations balanced. #ksedchat
Also through #Ksedchat lots of connections where made and got to share my classroom w @8to3withMrsV@rbharder and others! So much fun and they have become dear friends through it all!

#ksedchat A6 difficult to say... everyone is at different places in their learning (the "personalized" part) we would have to know where to tell them what
Heard Marzano say “the secret to getting better is to WATCH others who are better than you.” No workshop, no conference, just observe a master at his/her craft. And this came from a guy who has gotten RICH from presenting at conferences. #ksedchat#leadupchat
Yes! Connecting with my #Ksedchat tribe and visiting them in “3D” has been so powerful for me as a teacher. Thankful that my principal supported that time for me to grow and so thankful for you, @misszeisler - you’re a diamond! ❤️

A6: I recommend every educator reading every @MichaelFullan1 book they can get their hands on. To collaborate you have to find your tribe - the people you can go to and learn on for support and growth. Go to conferences, present at conferences. Rinse and repeat #ksedchat
A5: Allowing teachers more opportunities to choose the district funded PD opportunities that meet their needs. Which goes back to my first response—finding a way to provide teachers with a PD budget like we would a classroom budget. #ksedchat
Why do we do so much PD on our time? Are we just that hungry? Or is our appetite to learn just not being satisfied via traditional means? PD needs to be one THING that does MORE. Not one MORE THING to do. #ksedchat
A6 My Favorite Resources page https://t.co/3h24LjRfZH Want to build a fantastic PLN to connect, learn and share with follow these outstanding educators and those interested in education. #ksedchat
A6 Start with your own building. Book studies. Encourage Twitter chats, finding teachers in their own field. We all know it is all about the kids! Team work! #ksedchat
It’s often frustrating to have a One-Size-Fits-All approach to PD. Teachers need to be trusted that they know what they need to continue to grow and develop as educators and life long learners. #ksedchat
A6: Love this resource for reflecting on Social Emotional instructional practices. Sets off a lot of thinking about how you connect with kids, and sets you on a course to discover more. #ksedchathttps://t.co/f0edYhr5ja
A6 Of course, def #ksedchat and then follow everyone on here! Amazing people w/ great blogs and/or podcasts, such as @MrPStrunk & @ChouinardJahant . And here in KS I follow @glennw98 . Read about teaching practices & listen to podcasts! #ksedchat
Now that’s redesign! Wonder what that would look like? A menu of choices, all of which support district and state goals? We are trying that in our #microcredentialing pilot with #KSDE Board Outcomes. Kind of, sort of. #ksedchat
A5: Allowing teachers more opportunities to choose the district funded PD opportunities that meet their needs. Which goes back to my first response—finding a way to provide teachers with a PD budget like we would a classroom budget. #ksedchat
Huh. This is my first time hearing about this (or at least processing it since I must have seen the hashtag around). Now I'm bummed to miss it. Will there be another one next year? #ksedchat
