Hey y'all! I'm Kasey Bell from #ShakeUpLearning. Welcome to #edtechchat! Please introduce yourself, where you’re from, and any Google Certifications you have or that interest you.
I am Alicia, an Instructional Technology Coach who serves elementary schools within Tuscaloosa City Schools in Tuscaloosa, AL. I am Level 1 Google certified. My long term goal is to be a certified Google trainer. #edtechchat
Hello. This is Ambrish—from Hong Kong. Fairly new to the world of Twitter and using it as a learning platform. Looking forward to contributing and learning through chats like this. #edtechchat
Hi! I’m Sarah, a 6th grade ELA teacher in GA. I don’t have any Google certifications yet but have done level 1 coursework & am in a cohort in my County with some others who are working toward level 1 too #edtechchat
A1: I’ve been trying to make time to get Level II certified and I felt this chat would be beneficial in learning tips on how to better prepare myself for the test. #edtechchat
Hey I'm Michelle and I teach a 7th and 8th grade STEM Robotics course in NJ. I don't have any Google Certifications but I've been using the Google Suite in my classroom my whole 5 year career! #edtechchat
Welcome to #edtechchat! Please introduce yourself and from where you’re joining us! Tonight we’ll be discussing Google Certification with guest moderator @shakeuplearning!
A1: This summer, I got Level 1 certified and plan to get Level 2 soon. Plus, after reading your book last spring and being a fan of GTT weekly, I figured there would be lots of great information.#edtechchat
A1: You may wonder why I talk so much about #GoogleCertification, and it is because I am on a mission to empower as many educators as I can to reach their goals! #edtechchat
A1: @s_bearden told us to be here :) But seriously - with the amount of google used in schools, everyone needs to know how it works and how to use it. #edtechchat
A1: Google is being used through my entire start of my teaching career. (First year teacher). I’m interested in learning more about Google Certifications! #Edtechchat
A1 I used to be a Certified Trainer, but let that lapse. I have kept my Administrator Certification, but wanted to learn about the Educator Certification, and see if it is possible to earn while I am not in a classroom,. #edtechchat
A1: With the role of @GoogleForEdu expanding rapidly, I wished to see how best I could harness it's potential to aide my students. And it gives them confidence, if we are certified. #edtechchat
Hi everyone at #edtechchat! I’m Eric from Ontario, 🇨🇦. Grade 4/5 teacher, educational blogger, YouTube creator, and education resource author! I’m excited to learn with all of you tonight!
A1: Google is a big part of our ecosystem, along with many other school districts. Google Certs help you take your ability to use your tools to the next level. I think the cert will help me better support our Ts and Ss #edtechchat
Hi! My name is Lyndi Valicek and I’m an Instructional Technologist for Berkeley County School District in S.C. I am Level 1 &2 and a Certified Trainer thanks to @ShakeUpLearning#edtechchat
Hey Kasey! I am student currently in an Education Technology class and we are currently in the process of becoming #GoogleCertified to help us in our future classrooms! #edtechchat
A1: I rely so heavily on Google in my classroom, I'd love to learn how I can start a path to certification and what benefits that would give me as a teacher besides a note on my resume. #edtechchat
Hello, I’m Taylor, tweeting from William Woods University, Missouri! I am actually in the process of becoming Google Certified level 1! It’s a joy to see all the tools that can utilized through Google! #edtechchat
Welcome to #edtechchat! Please introduce yourself and from where you’re joining us! Tonight we’ll be discussing Google Certification with guest moderator @shakeuplearning!
A1 I feel like becoming Google Certified opened up the opportunity to learn more, so that I can share more. I joined this chat to help others. #edtechchat
There is nothing stopping me from getting certified in every tool I use, which should be somewhat expected, especially if I want to use it correctly. #edtechchat
BOOM! Exactly! I can tell you that I wouldn't have any of the opportunities that I have had if I hadn't become Google Certified. Increased my learning, my PLN, and gave me confidence! #edtechchat
A2: There are always benefits to learning about anything that will make you a better servant of your purpose and profession. Google certifications are proof that you are skilled in the usage of its products and can level up your lessons/activities with its program. #edtechchat
But isn't that the point - show proficiency and use regularly - or is it just the compilation of simple paper tasks without the mastery that bothers you? #edtechchat
I’ve seen that it makes you a more desirable teacher when applying to work at schools! It shows that you are familiar with google, which can be very useful in a classroom! #edtechchat
A2: There are many benefits to Google Certification, but most of all you will learn new skills to transform your classroom and gain new confidence with tech! #edtechchathttps://t.co/o8Wnvttkdx
A1 Actually YOU (Kasey) attracted me to this chat. I've been listening to #gttribe for the past few weeks on the way to work and LOVE it. Then I saw your tweet about the chat tonight and cleared my calendar! #edtechchat
A2: Connections & shared resources from some really innovative people! #edtechchat Opportunities to present is what I'm looking forward to most! #ShakeUpLearning
Some of the benefits are being knowledgeable in the technology that you will use in the class. Often times i feel some use technology that we have no knowledge of and we just start to wing it. lol #Edtechchat
A2: Google certs show your street cred. Helpful on resume by demonstrating #edtech know-how and identifies you to your colleagues as a resource. #edtechchat
A2 For me the certification opened up the door to help other school districts. As Google was catching on in WI, when other Tech Dir's approached me with questions, the Certification gave them confidence I knew what I was talking about, #edtechchat
And that is the problem. Don’t we say that testing doesn’t show anything but yet we say that testing for a very shows something. Hypocrisy isn’t it. #edtechchat
A2: As an older teacher, it shows that I am still interested in learning, changing and growing. It makes me more likely to get that interview. #edtechchat
A2: Aside from the sweet badge you get, you learn so much through the certification process. It’s that wisdom that I enjoy sharing with my PLN so we can ALL grow as educators. #edtechchat
I enjoy using #googleslides so much more than any other presentation tool, it’s so user friendly and, like you said, is flexible for student creation! #edtechchat
A2 Google Certification is a micro credential that introduces individuals to the Google tools for education. Good on a resume. Good for collaboration. #edtechchat
What she said! #edtechchat The difference is we are testing for proficiency with tools, not understanding. Proficiency can be measured via a skills test. Understanding isn't multiple choice!
I’m a student at William Woods University, studying to be an educator, so I get to see the benefits of #googlecertification from both the student and teacher perspective! #edtechchat
A2 I think the two biggest benefits are the huge PLN that comes with becoming certified, but also giving yourself the confidence to help other people. #edtechchat
A3: Time and energy. I finish up graduate school in December. After that, perhaps I will go that route. Our school has supported development in Google Edu Certs, I'm hoping I can get some support towards "Trainer" #edtechchat
A3: Working a busy, full-time job and having needy family members (just kidding about my family). I have a feeling this will be a common answer. ;) #edtechchat
A3: This is actually my first time really hearing about the certification so i guess it would be my lack of knowledge about the certifications and the levels. #Edtechchat
A3: Time. If I do it, I want to focus on it and do it right. It’s tough to try and dedicate time to focus on things like this. Sometimes its helpful to take a class, because this forces you to focus more. Know anyone that offers these? ;-) #edtechchat
A3: Next for me would be Google Certified Trainer, but the only thing holding me back is (lack of) time. I usually do these kinds of certs during school breaks, so I’ll try to squeeze it in over 🦃 or 🎄 #edtechchat
A3 One thing that has always concerned me about the cert process from google is that it is always changing. You start preparing for the test now, but by the time you are ready to for it. Everything has changed, and you have to start over. #edtechchat
A3: Mostly time and prioritizing.. I'm newly married and just started grad school. I'm comfortable in my current teaching position so I'm weighing whether the time and effort are worth it for this right now. It might be something for the future though. #edtechchat
A3.1 The speed of the change is one of the reasons I lost my trainer cert. It seemed like the requirements were always changing, and I missed filing some of the re-cert stuff. #edtechchat
A3: Focus and Desire. Certifications don't always signify competency. Some certifications are like decorations and aren't really necessary to help with my focus on equity for Ss and Ts. #edtechchat
A3: The only barriers holding me back is the extensiveness of the certification process. But the more detail, the more familiar I will be when utilizing the tools that Google offers! #edtechchat
#edtechchat I know I might be in the minority here, but Google Certification strikes me as a scam. It's like Google is outsourcing advertisement and content development to teachers, and then charging *them* for the privilege.
A2 For me it was the process that really showed me what was out there and possible. Made me a more creative teacher IMO. #EDTECHCHAT#GoogleCertification
A3: Also always trying to figure out where to start. Thankful for your guide to help get a program started for my staff @tnochumson@KClevering#edtechchat
1.1 With what I missed it was easier to go back and just re take the tests again, but then the pesky time got in the way. For the trainer, part of the process was bigger training activities. The vast majority of the training I did .... #edtechchat
1.2 was 1:1 with teachers. They would call me up with a question, and I would train them on a specific tool. The amount of legwork to then create the document trail meant I was spending more time writing up about the training than actually doing it. #edtechchat
May not be the popular opinion, but one that I’ve heard before - even from folks who use Google Apps frequently for teaching and learning. They acknowledge the benefits of using the tool, but struggle to embrace the certs. #EdTechChat
A3: Honestly? TIME. When you’re being pulled in so many directions, even scheduling tasks doesn’t mean you’ll get to what you need to. Level II does seem a lil more scary to me too, though. #edtechchat
A3 Next big googly goal is #GoogleEI. I’d love to have a chance to go to an innovator academy and work on a project that impacts others. Hurdle is the $ and the courage to go for it. #EDTECHCHAT
A4: I feel like I know the least amount about YouTube, because I have just started to move fully explore that tool after getting Level 1 certified #edtechchat
A4: i feel i know the least about google sheets. I find it difficult to use and it’s honestly something i do not use in my class or lesson at all. #Edtechchat
A4: I think Keep. I just prefer notes in docs and want to tell keep evangelicalsto stay off my lawn. So i probably need to spend more time with it. #edtechchat
A4: I would say Google Sheets. When I see the things my team does with Sheets, I get freaked out. There’s so many functions that I haven’t been able to grasp. Hopefully, Level II training will help me level up. #edtechchat
A3: I love #edtechchat because I am working on my MIE and there are so many great things on it, but I also am obsessed with #readingintervention because it makes me feel not so alone in my struggles with helping my students work their way up to grade level readers #tldeuno2018
A3 - trying to figure out what to do for my Trainer video - I'm all over a video when I know who the audience is - but "Google" as my audience? That's a head scatcher. #edtechchat
I can agree that I have the least experience with #GoogleSheets but I look forward to learning more about it and how it can be used in and out of the classroom! #edtechchat
Completely agree, Kasey. I still think certs are important for many, because of the community aspect and the embedded support when learning the educational applications of any tool. #EdTechChat
and it's the one that I have to create the most lessons on! There is so much to learn and it is usually the one that teachers have the least experience with. #edtechchat
A4: Sheets - I admit I’ve always used excel for my math, budgets, and other misc spreadsheets, but I know sheets can do it all - and more! It’s just making that leap to do it. (Moving my cheese as I usually joke) #edtechchat
A4: Does Google Sites count? I use it with my students for online portfolios but I feel like they (8th graders) are always showing me new things. #edtechchat
A4 Definitely have to say Sheets. I use them often but still have not scratched surface of what is possible. Along with that, forms. Think they could help me with data collection for sure. #EDTECHCHAT
I’m GCE level 2 & I find the benefits alone for me as an educator are amazing! I use my Gdrive/keep/sheets/docs etc in so many ways I would never had known about had I not become certified!! @GoogleForEdu#GoogleCertification#GoogleEDU#edtechchat
Drawings might be my favorite as well. Love to use it as the #hyperdoc platform and then have my Ss create their own from their to link what they have learned and created #edtechchat

A4: Google Sheets BUT I’ve been working on that. 😉 Honestly it’s probably because it’s the one I use the least. Slides, Draw, Forms, and Sites are my jam! 🍇🍞 #edtechchat
A2 benefits of certification include solidifying skills to get certified, and bettering skills in weaker areas/tools you don’t use as often #edtechchat
A4 I feel like I always have more to learn about everything! But spreadsheets have always scared me so those and also some of the different add-ons for Docs #edtechchat
And...BOOM!!! I think this was the biggest aha for me. You can never be so arrogant as to think you know it all. Even if you do, it will change tomorrow. #learnerfirst#edtechchat

@s_bearden, @amber_grohs, @GoogleForEdu
A4 I feel like I know Sheets, Maps, and Calendar the least...Sheets I want to learn more but the others not so much. At work I have to use Outlook so I don’t need calendar feature. Maps has just not interested me. #edtechchat
It's intimidating for a lot of teachers. And I fully admit, that I have to relearn things before I teach them because I don't use some of those features everyday. #edtechchat
#EdtechChat was my first twitter chat and I enjoyed meeting and discussing with fellow educators and how you make use #GoogleCertification !
Taylor, signing out from William Woods University! Have a wonderful night!
A5: The focus of the Google Certified Educator program is learning how to meaningfully use G Suite tools in your classroom. I learn something new everyday, and share a lot on the blog and the #gttribe podcast:
https://t.co/bA48hpKRC9#edtechchat
As a technology specialist, I use G Suite tools every day. All my students are on Google Classroom and use G Suite when they come to my weekly sessions with them. #edtechchat
A5 We use it a lot, Ss collaborate using Slides, and make Forms, but our school is Microsoft and so I make sure that Ss are learning both, but use it every day #edtechchat
A3 time! I have the Level 1 cert, but need time to review what’s required for next level and then a solid three hours to take it. Hopefully I can get it done this year sometime! #edtechchat
A5: it’s well integrated. Just today - helped someone’s slides for a training, shared google Doc for department board report, google sheet for badge Id updates, and google form for @GoGuardian readiness check. Oh, and Classroom for our district PL platform #edtechchat
A5: Daily! All day, every day! Seriously! And my G Drive is super organized to keep up with everything. I honestly don’t think I could ever go back to a time WITHOUT the G Suite. #edtechchat
SideQ: Is there a good Gsuite tool for collaborating with teachers at other schools? I don't mind sharing documents but is there a group tool now that plus is being shut down? #edtechchat
A5: I use GSuite every single day! From scheduling to emails. GSuite is a part of my lifeline. My school system uses it especially our middle and high schools. More elementary teachers are implementing its use slowly. It’s the best! #edtechchat
A5 I use G Suite all day. Not just in my job, but different groups as well. I am on a couple of boards, and moved everyone over to GSuite including Groups for ease of communication, etc.. #edtechchat
A5 I use G Suite every day, though I could definitely use it more and better on some days than others! Sometimes it’s hard to think of higher application than simple substitution. #edtechchat
Q5: Daily. Forms is such a great quick assessment tool, we use Classroom as our central hub.. couldn't function in my room without the suite #edtechchat
A4 new G Sites.I had a "class" website where my goal was to get as much student work online as I could for parents.I had 840 Ss, 6 grade levels, w/6 sections in each grade https://t.co/InUiUHAP6d about a complicated site! But I definitely know it inside and out now! #edtechchat
A5 I use gsuit all day all the time. Slides and YouTube mostly. Some docs and sheets. Students interact with slides via iPad to move images, etc for lessons. (@jmattmiller idea for digital manipulatives👍🏼) #EdTechChat
I love forms! I used it last year with @annie_mmeAnnie as we co-taught a kinder class. We used forms to input observational data and it all went into one google sheet. #edtechchat
In reply to
@DeannaToxopeus, @ShakeUpLearning, @annie_mmeAnnie
I was just at the Midwest Google Summit this week, and I thought they told us that G+ was going to be kept around for education. Did we get some bad info? #edtechchat
That's why I am trying to find a group collaboration tool :) Started the coursework and reading the book. There is a lot in my mind to unpack and I want to share and brainstorm. More interactive than a blog. #edtechchat
A4 SO read that question wrong. thought it said "the best" not "the least". The one I know the least is definitely Sheets. But I can Google a formula like there's no tomorrow. #edtechchat
EVERY. SINGLE. DAY. (in my job). Sheets to organize the many papers that come & go. Keep for my “to do” lists & for observational notes. Drive to store everything. Mail for work emails. Calendar for work events. Docs for documentation & other items. #edtechchat
It's going away on the consumer side, but can still be used within your own domain, but that means communities where you collaborate with others outside of your domain will go away. #edtechchat
So far it is interesting. Every project idea I come up with has about 10+ side lessons and instructions I want to write for those coming behind me. Just not enough time :) #edtechchat
A6: Yes, and it's all about making a plan. During the break I'll start mapping out what/when I will accomplish things to become a certified trainer #edtechchat
taught "specials" technology - part of the elementary PE, Art, Music pullout rotation. Taught Prek-5th. Did it for 8 years - am a tech coach now. #edtechchat
Some G+ communities had some great traction. It would be great if they could keep it as part of edu domains or allow them like intranets use to be. Wishful thinking. #edtechchat
A5: All day, everyday (w/T's more than S's as a coach). Not because I won't use other tools, I can just do almost everything with GSuite. I even use my Chromebook more than my laptop because it's all in one place. #edtechchat
A6: If you want to take your skills to the next level, I can help! I have 3 courses that help prepare for Google Certified Educator Level 1, Level 2, or Certified Trainer. They open on 11/20 and close 12/4!

Great courses! I did the Certified Trainer course myself. Lots of awesome goodies besides what you really need to be prepared! #edtechchat@ShakeUpLearning

A6: I most definitely plan on leveling my GSuite game up by Google training and continuing to following GSuite gurus such as @ericcurts & @ShakeUpLearning who offer tons of resources that make learning fun for Ss & Ts. #edtechchat
Thanks for joining this week’s #edtechchat! Don’t forget to follow your new connections from tonight - and a special thank you to @shakeuplearning for hosting a terrific chat!
A6: Easy, learn from @ShakeUpLearning !#edtechchat Innovator next, but that will have to wait a bit. I need to branch out with presenting outside my district more.
