#isedchat I think we start by allowing students the time to immerse themselves in the math itself- whether it's with manipulatives, conversation, pictures, etc. I think the more kids explore in math, the more they develop a curiosity to discover patterns and magic in math.
I feel if the students are modeled a conceptual understanding and then are given the opportunity to explain their own thinking, that will encourage a deeper understanding.

Good question! Heard recent arguments about what kids use after high school. I do think the types of learning and problem solving do enhance our thinking even if we forget the formulas. #isedchat
Today, I observed some third graders making arrays with white and orange cheezeits. They were into it! Talking math and truly explaining what multiplication was. #isedchat
Personally it is because it is thinking we don’t expose kids to in a concrete form before expecting them to do worksheets. Really important to “play” with math concepts before “doing” math. #isedchat
I understand math refusal on a personal level. "Math phobia" seems like making something into a pathological condition that is actually a cognitive predilection and /or political and necessary response to classroom circumstances. #isedchat
Did a Guided Math book study with teachers a few years ago. Lasted all year and each month we got together to discuss what was tried and how it worked out. The conversation was important and the feedback was invaluable! #isedchat
Actually trip to the supermarket to “buy” ingredients for a meal. Cooking with fractions. Planning a road trip with stops in a set amount of time. #isedchat
