#Kinderchat, glue, glitter, gogurt, bringing daily joy to twitter. Find us Mondays, 9 pm EST and 8:30PM London time when we talk all things Early Years!
Come out, come out wherever you are! It's #kinderchat time! Say hello, where you are & your fave holiday treat. Tks to tonight's moderator, @Woods1stgrade!
Hi #kinderchat I'm Christine from Alberta, Canada and I have moved from learning with children to learning with adults! And I really love those peanut butter marshmallow squares!
Hi #kinderchat :) I am a senior at Southern New Hampshire Univserity. I am majoring in Elementary Education and I am very excited to be apart of this twitter chat tonight. #EDU435
Hello! I'm Myla and I am currently a senior at SNHU studying elementary and special education. My favorite holiday treat is Christmas cookies #kinderchat#edu435
Hi #kinderchat I’m Faige sub teacher now and I just finished 8 days of lighting Hanukkah candles and latkes and applesauce. Somehow it tastes best this time of year! 🕎
In case you are using a platform that does not show images, Q1 is: What one math material or resource could you not live without? Where can we find it? #kinderchat
A1: Although I do not have my own classroom yet, in different classrooms I have observed, I see teachers using unifix cubes almost every time! #kinderchat#edu435
A1: I think an iPad! We don’t use them to LEARN math but we sure do use them to understand WHAT we have learned. Many apps lend themselves to open ended activities to represent learning. It’s so individualized as well. #kinderchat
A1: I'd use numerous things. In K I struggled with numbers until our classroom assistant taught me touch points. It was a GAME CHANGER and a method I used all the way to 12th grade and still use today whenever needed #KinderChat
Q1: I do not have any materials or resources that I could not teach without since I am still learning the ropes. Does anyone have any recommendations for me for when I do have my own classroom? #EDU435#kinderchat

A2: we used real money today from our project. Love to use fun erasers, fun stickers on tangible math, sticks, rocks, magnetic dots in a tens frame, cars, legos. So many fun choices! #kinderchat
A2: I recently purchased some wooden ten frames that have been quite wonderful. We use anything small enough to fit on there to practice counting. Daily attendance is also a quick counting activity that is easy to integrate. #kinderchat

A2. Counting bags, playing a game of sparkle, using hundreds charts to chart numbers of items, using cupcake tins to sort and count objects, etc #kinderchat
Loose parts (buttons, corks, keys, seashells) are excellent for counting. I have made up a dozen bags with different materials in each. Bags are labeled, students count items in bag, record # on sheet. Ss love the excitement of finding out what is in the bag! #kinderchat

My fave counting game needs NO MATERIALS: Count round the circle: helper chooses "magic" number 1-10. Kids ea say one number. Kid who says magic number sits down. Repeat until everyone sitting. #Kinderchat
The most successful activities are ones you do on a regular basis and are meaningful. Attendance is meaningful because people in the classroom are missing and that impacts them a certain way, and is tangible. #kinderchat
We love to play this, sometimes we roll the dice and have to start at that number and count up as high as we can before we make a mistake. There's so many ways to vary it. #Kinderchat

We just learned a new game from our new math curriculum. We count 11-29 and when I stay stop, Ss covers that # on a # line. AFter 6-8 Ss cover, then we talk about what # is missing #kinderchat
Those are all great ideas that I should be able to get ahold of. My biggest worry is not having the materials I need next year as a first year teacher, but now I see I can collect little things as I go. Thank you! #EDU435#kinderchat
I also love Kim Sutton CD where they kids have to listen to numbers being called out and they color them in or write them. Works on focus and number sense #kinderchat
Hate to break it to you, you NEVER feel like you have enough materials! 😂 This is how teachers end up with their garages dedicated to boxes and boxes and boxes of stuff. 📦 😂 #kinderchat

I had these little people thingys. You could count a group of them or use them with a number line. When I used them with the number lines, I picked out the little people to match the student so it was like that were jumping along #kinderchat
A3: Addition & subtraction are not formal parts of our K curric, but we LOVE those round 2-colour tokens to practice composing/decomposing numbers. #kinderchat
A3: Our curriculum doesn’t have an addition or subtraction outcome, however, I enjoy using both rows of the rekenrek to teach subitizing (recognizing a set of objects at a glance) which incorporates addition with number sense elements. #kinderchat

A3: popsicle sticks, cards, dominos, play dough balls, paint dots, dice, and legos. Anything my kids are into i bring out!! Pictures, number lines, and manipulative help my kiddos the most!

A4) This year we have a new curriculum. I let the Ss use the materials for choice time. We have polydrons for the first time. They are used to build 3d shapes. #kinderchat
A4: #kinderchat Come on 6 was my fav in 1st grade, ss play in partners &they write their numbers to 120 while partner rolls the dice, when they get a 6 they take the pencil and start writing their numbers and the other person rolls. First one to 120 wins. Need to modify for kdg
Q4: LOVE celebrating all our math skills with days like 50th, 75th, 100th day of school. Number talks have been a huge help to build number sense! We’ve built them into our daily routines. I’ve also had game/play day and math skills naturally come out! #kinderchat
I have an essential question on my wall that we reference at various times with out learning. It says- How do I make a difference in the world? So I ask, how does what we are doing help us make a difference? #kinderchat
I think it is impt to ask "how" questions as part of math: If we want to read half a story, HOW can we figure out where to stop? HOW can we figure out which pumpkin is fattest? Etc #kinderchat
I love the “how” questioning. It really gives over the learning to the kinders. They can collaborate, work together to find the solutions. So much learning in questions that leads kids to discovery #kinderchat
A5: I have 2 long bookshelves dedicated to math and all manipulatives, games, etc are kept there and within ss reach. I also have crates with games, number writing practice pages, video qr codes #kinderchat
Tks so much to @Woods1stgrade for moderating tonight! Next week, we wrap up the season with our annual (fun, ridiculous) #kinderchat holiday party. See my next tweet for info, & invite all your teacher friends!
