The student panel was excellent during the AT Symposium. Hearing student voice is essential for those of us who work with struggling learners. #ATchat#dyslexiacon18
Had wonderful conversations with people today about the impact #dyslexia had on their lives and how they are now impacting the lives of others through education and advocacy #ATchat#DyslexiaCon2018
Many participants at #dyslexiacon18 struggle with the balance of accommodations and remediation. We are trying to help them understand the need to offer both to bridge the gap and promote independence and success. #ATchat
A1: We had a student led panel at the end of our full day AT session today. So powerful to hear from the kids what worked, what didn't work. Amazing stories. I could listen to that all day! #ATchat
One of the things that was surprising from the student panel during the AT Symposium was the students shared they don't use AT outside of school. They only read and write for school and miss the opportunities for non-school related activities. #ATchat#dyslexiacon18
Maybe they are doing more of a mainstream technology thing? There are so many built in options available. Can’t wait to hear how they respond when you check back with them! #ATchat
One of my greatest takeaways here at #dyslexiacon18 is how little is known about AT with this community of professionals. We have so much work to do! #ATchat
Day 1 takeaway for me at #DyslexiaCon18 - being reminded that we have such a strong #AssistiveTech community that works together to foster independence in our kids with #dyslexia! #ATchat

First, very few people even mention AT at their IEP meetings. And the resistance to AT is still great here. It's all about remediation and not accommodation. #ATchat
Way to put a positive spin on Karen’s observation. We are ambassadors of AT, and I am sure everyone attending will be thinking about AT from all of your influence. Way to go! #ATchat
Let's hope so. We had a couple that might need some more convo before they change their minds. We just keep fighting the fight - sometimes 1 person at a time #ATchat

One individual was still holding onto that age old myth that AT is in some way cheating or students would learn to read because TTS made it easy #ATchat

They focus on remediation and can't seem to understand that the students need to be exposed to higher level books. Many teachers are not comfortable with the technology and have little support from school admin.#ATchat
I am excited to get into the #dyslexiacon18 exhibit hall tomorrow in the AT Lab and work to help people make those connections about the power of AT #ATchat

That’s a big part of our work. But part of it is lack of understanding and beliefs (in my experience). You need both. Until remediation clicks, AT sticks. #ATChat
One of the things included in my Google Doc but I didn't have a chance to share is the EF Toolkit. Check out https://t.co/weJJq0TGlX for tools and strategies for executive functions. #ATchat#dyslexiacon18
