#aussieED Archive
#aussieED was founded on the belief that all teachers, and students, should have unlimited access to Professional Development, on their own terms, to improve their teaching, their schools and change the lives of the students they encounter. Since then, we have embarked on a mission to reach educators, not only in Australia but, all around the globe. We want to smash the barriers that prevent teachers from easily connecting and learning with each other. To that end, we have developed a regular Ed-chat each Sunday on twitter at #aussieED. The chat allows all teachers, leaders, administrators and all those connected with education to meet on an unbiased platform and discuss the real issues that effect what happens in classrooms everywhere. Our chats are authentic because we are real teachers walking the same walk that so many do everyday.

A1. I love this definition of design from : "thought that goes into things we don't think about" https://t.co/sxtBrtzHTX
I wouldn't think you are a novice. Design and mathematics go hand in hand
Hoping that I haven't missed tonight's chat! WA time 6 36 here!

My design Professor 'It's creating something to serve a purpose'. 'Design engages and allows for authentic cross curricular ops'
thanks Brett, always great to be here
A4 everything in moderation balance is key in everything isn't it? Too much chocolate too much wine too much work too much fun....
Hi friends- dropping from Wollongong. Loved watching our home town girl Emma McKeon win a 🏅as part of relay swim team 🇦🇺
Some of our garden beds need some design thinking at the moment
A2. Where to start?! Currently in a consultation period for new senior maths syllabuses in NSW. Curriculum needs design thinking!
Great People. Great Topic
I'm expecting big hugs when I get to see you in a week https://t.co/FKMB7dps3A
Hi all, Kate from Cairns. Looking forward to tonight's .
A1 thinking following a design process? What am i doing, why am i doing it? How am i doing it - actually doing it &how did it go.
Hi everyone, I'm Aimee a PST from Melbourne
Good evening mates. Recently discovered A More Beautiful Question as a helpful step in process. https://t.co/Ck1yjZrNq3
A2) Not teaching curriculum in set blocks of curriculum time
Hope is like the sun, which, as we journey toward it, casts the shadow of our burden behind us. https://t.co/H5ek772YOc
Q2: Is it wrong to say every aspect of classroom life? How can we improve what we do to make it innovative? https://t.co/PcoEDVTRK9
Wow awesome Fear of failure is number 1 enemy of innovation.
How Ts think about lesson planning, it needs to become a process of innovation to drive progress
A2: The process of putting together a timetable, a class, a lesson and our curriculum could all use a little design thinking!
A3 - curriculum design, enabling learners to realise our school vision, creative visioning for future
Having this exact chat w/ Ts, English, Science, Art, Engineering. There are so many possibilities
bit late to the party, still trying to multitask between lunch and laggy mobile net- but hey all :)
quick race the Tyrannosaurus
I like this one - thanks.
A2. Anything where teachers begin with 'well last time we did...'
Sorry Danielle, I haven't taken one. I will tomorrow morning. My boys group will be tackling the problem
A2. Assessment badly needs design thinking. Many structures exist primarily due to tradition, not learning https://t.co/iLzuZ8tb5v
Getting others on board is not so easy though
A2: can be applied to any situation as it looks for solutions to identified problems
Yes what cant be implemented is not an authentic design
A2 reducing the non essential stuff that seems to take up more and more teacher time
shall we discuss the elephant in sec.schools..timetable?
A2 - Allowing Ts and Ss to adapt to new changes in senior subjects which in turn encourages creativity
A1 Design Thinking is about creativity and the possibilities of what could be.
No. Lets do what we already do, but better, is always a goal of mine!
A1: it's all about ideas. lots of them. all of them. sometimes multiple ideas lead 2 a perfect solution! https://t.co/F5Sda4x6El
A1 Process of thinking abt where u want 2 go & prob solving along the way 2 get there. Req's methodical thinking.
Still learning that I can't multitask during !!
A2 reports, timetables, students groupings, unnecessary bureaucracy and administration tasks...
Me too my connection is v slow ... and on such a great topic night sigh :)
A2: Empathy is central, so all aspects of design (building, curriculum, staffing) could benefit from a design thinking approach
A2 I'd like to use to redesign school wide pedagogy, to disrupt 'the way things have always been done'
that's would help heaps! I added hash tag this time! Ugh!
A2: Definitely assessment - it is the weak link in a strong chain. Too traditional and not reflective of indiv learning styles.
Wow thanks for this one - really sparked me.
As there is never a silly question in my classroom - always encourage Ss to develop their thinking
A1 Sometimes I think design thinking is what we used to do all the time as kids! 😄
Haha ! So nted. Wont even try LOL
I think that our curriculum could do with a good injection of imagination & innovation as well
A2 How Ts present learning. Need to at least loosen their grip
A3. Rapid design of problem solving solutions based on the needs of a user group.
instinct tells me that once a kids says no, the idea is dead
Encourage amongst not only Ts, but Ss too https://t.co/hxmZWGY1h3
A2 I'd like to use to redesign school wide pedagogy, to disrupt 'the way things have always been done'
A2:stretch T/S thinking beyond a search for the "right answer" &instead look for depth of understanding from experiencing a topic.
what Q are we on? and what is it?
how to quantify the Ss who walk out knowing more than when they walked in but can't show it to test std
A2 We're using to frame challenges in our a powerful way to make with purpose
I agree with you on that!
design is difficult to standardise
Yes its chaotic thinking now - too many ideas no streaming or common vision
That quiet moment, when everyone is madly typing
To make design thinking a habit of the mind
Thanks. I've got a feeling this mantra might c e in handy for me one day!
Hey arriving late, sorry! I'm a novice, so I'm gonna watch and learn from my PLN tonight. Nice to see you Zee
using design thinking to help with our school data at the moment. EDX course has helped focus us
Hi Ines from Germany, sorry I'm late. It's my last day of holidays!
It is, but there needs to be more flexibility in assessing, particularly at elementary level.
we've used to reimagine what professional learning & conversations look like at our school.
Mine keeps dropping out. Thank goodness for archives 😀
A3: Design is about creating solutions to problems. Creative solutions. Often don’t need to look far to find the problems.
I think also we differentiate & give Ss freedom but then test their knowledge the 'same old way' https://t.co/O0KHJLvNKw
A2. Assessment badly needs design thinking. Many structures exist primarily due to tradition, not learning https://t.co/iLzuZ8tb5v
I would loved to have been a student in your classroom!
A3. Design thinking helps us be intentional, innovative & thoughtful - even if we return to the status quo https://t.co/Pbl1LHkPsR
I believe that this should be the norm
I concur - A DT culture driving inquiry based learning and embracing iteration is a powerful tool for learning
A3 At my prev. school we used for leadership planning, consulting, curriculum mapping - it became a way of being
well then go for the YES...
Agree, yeah but, think I should choose my battles wisely! Don't bite off more than I can chew?!
Hey everyone, coming in late
A3 to prepare ours student for the future - standard response, but if we don't we're doing a disservice to them.
is now trending in USA, ranking 30
To help both Ss & Ts to think out of the box, don't be afraid of trying something new
A3 DT should lead to continual and critical evaluation of improvements, should be a cycle not a single iteration of a process.
Agree. Assessment is frequently the 800 pound gorilla that doesn't want to move & takes most effort to shift
Id like to see design thinking in the way we approach our personal prof goals
A3) To encourage planned thinking with problems, goals and strategies.
It's about the process not the outcome
Q3 Because so much of what we do is based on what we have always done.
the Einstein quote is one of my favs & also so true of what we subject our Ss to
A3: It can be used for the whole school thinking - from strategic planning right down to class lessons. Infinite possibilities.
Yes! But most of our school structures are huge & move slowly - so iteration must be carefully controlled
A3 to assess purpose, intention and effectiveness in everything we do
Q3 helps put everyone on the same page and reduces limitations.
A3 Design thinking in learning and teaching is both a mediating tool, and an environment for tackling social problems.
A3 Because has the potential to provide structure and framework for all to be on the same page.
we are redesigning our learning spaces- no good if pedagogy stays the same-both require change
A3 To get teachers out from behind desks and interacting with Ss!
A3:Ts help Ss prep for post secondary life through design thinking experiences in the classroom.Ts also using current practice!
A2 mainly in my rm during building of practical Math projs. Start w o'ended Q, how 2 create prod?
Totally. I find myself returning to it again & again. There's a reason Steve Jobs changed his industry: massive insight!
A2 the area immediately outside our kindergarten classrooms would benefit from design thinking
A3: It's fun. When ever I have participated in design thinking - it's been collaborative, though provoking & encourage innovation
A3 We need to use to engage our students and let them show what they know.
Students own the copy write to their work at school. If permission is not gained it cant be show
A3 As a D&T teacher, it is difficult to think of a situation where is not appropriate..
A3 - is allowing Ss to follow what they want to in a way that embraces change and creativity
Hmm, at the moment surprised to notice this in some of our highly-able girls.
An not be afraid of trying something new
A3- it provides all learners with an opportunity to be challenged, creative and invested in their learning
A3: Design thinking taps into 4C's by challenging assumptions, opening up ideas, more than one solution
A4 should be used to rethink the ideas of separate subjects :)
Steve Jobs quote, love it.
Forgot to introduce myself. Christy from USA, former Aussie and insomniac
Getting creative will help teachers overcome the crowded curriculum
A3: Empathy and growth mindset are inherent aspects of DT and so important for solving important problems
I agree, in the past we've started with pedagogy & this has naturally changed learning spaces
A3 preparation for real world of connectivity and rapid change builds "executive decision making" skills
A4 is a way of viewing the world and viewing learning. Can be used in any situation.
as a food teacher, I agree. I guess the risk factor helps students to think further than that which they know.
A3.
2 innovation, Creation Problem Solving rather than subject
DT is solutions focused which leads to growth mindset!! (A3)
clarification... by going for the YES... i meant helping student feel comfortable sharing and showing...
A3- would love to see it used with creating personalised learning plans (IEPs). More student voice!
I'm interested in how you did this.
This term we have rewritten our Stage 3 Science unit to reflect the design thinking process. Ss are so engaged
in sch teaches Ss that failure is expected and accepted
A3: Greetings! takes learners, of all ages, beyond the 'textbook' and into the world of creativity and innovation.
Q4 Definitely! Use it all the time in Math! Practical proj's &investgns. Always start from o'ended Q &it's essen'l
Defiantly, there's always stuff that could do with being confining to the cupboard, I cringe at how I used to teach
A4 Design thinking should be used in all subjects!
A4: To me, it can be used in all KLAs, but even more so teamed with inquiry learning. It seems to go hand in hand.
We need to combat TTWWADI - That's The Way We Always Do (Did) It.
A4 Yes. Any subject that has problems to solve needs DT. More cross-curricular DT, use it to stop teaching silos
Love this image! If I sit down to gaffe my next test, I'll visualize this gorilla! https://t.co/iJd74Tm11i
Agree. Assessment is frequently the 800 pound gorilla that doesn't want to move & takes most effort to shift
absolutely, it needs to be the current pedagogical approach
It can be used any where as long as the process is followed. Kitchen/Garden is a good example of this
A4: If inquiry process is used in any curriculum area, Ss can be presented with problems/questions - using DT to find solutions
A3 Being solution oriented is a key skill in today's world. is the key I think
Q4 Think of the relationship between art and maths and science. Rich design thinking tapped into by STEAM
A4 haven't used it in languages but would love to know examples to copy / adapt
A4 Design thinking is about not accepting the first idea that comes to mind. Applicable across all problem solving domains.
A4 - Many different uses for in edu, Maths, English, Visual Arts to name a few
you would have a field day in food tech?
A4. Definitely hope so! As a mathematician I am designing problems & pathways through them constantly! https://t.co/rwPsM7zQZ7
A4 - start with teachers and their pedagogy and move from there to curriculum design and continue to students'
a brilliant way to find out if children really understand a maths concept plus they love the challenge
Marie from Florida. Not familiar with design thinking - "spectating" to learn.
A4) Of course
Give Ss free range to develop solutions to problems
Would be considered a mindset?
Constantly up against, that's the way we do it.
A4 is powerful way to implement PBL/Inquiry & even genius hour, the strategies are universal
Q4 can be used in any and every concept we can think of. Can approach everything in this way if we think about it.
A4 definitely available to any area (humanities arts etc) becoz learning is not convenient subject categories rather interdiscip
Definitely! Only restrictn is the imaginational capability of the teachers! If u can dream u can do it!
A4; design thinking is a way to approach things, not an answer to them. So mould it, remix it, play and make it unique.
You need to be a critical thinker, solve problems doing research
A4 what if, in any subject area, we consider the goal of a task to be solution of a practical problem? Go design thinking!
A4: Absolutely. I think all teachers need see themselves as designers. If you have a spare 10 mins. https://t.co/NUwFMmptt6
A4: Also, allowing student input in the process - how do they see it fitting with their learning. Fairly important factor.
A4: Definitely your STEM subjects. But why not across the whole curriculum? Design thinking is broad and can be applied widely.
A4: a friend of mine is using Minecraft to look at communities and how they develop through a social studies lens.😊
You should see how engaged my class have been with the design challenges, can testify!
A4. I would like to see it being used in all KLAs. Links really well with Inquiry.
Design Thinking is more like a 'General Capability'
Nailed it! Trad assessment tools no longer measure how our learners grow and improve https://t.co/bDt5edTVdR
A2. Assessment badly needs design thinking. Many structures exist primarily due to tradition, not learning https://t.co/iLzuZ8tb5v
there is a great discussion about design thinking you might like to join or review later
Hi Viv from GC jumping in now - so agree with you Nicola every problem solving is needed everywhere!
I m taking Ts thru 2 days of PL using as if they were Ss in my class
A4 Doesn't it have to be used in other areas? You need to be about something don't you?
Thinking - means a process which is not bound to technology but to brain. So you can always use design thinking
You need to have that culture - some Ss are in the just give me the answer mode at school
That's so good! Hopefully lots of ideas generated - a creative staff.
Sorry everyone, tweetdeck froze up on me... I'm back now
Yes. It takes courage, persuasiveness, data & persistence to shift things like this - we need to play the long game.
A4: Design thinking gr8 across curriculum & also important character /citizenship skills from empathy & immersion in users world
Yep, which is why the PYP seems to use it well - inquiry based learning at its finest. https://t.co/IZFsgtUffu
A4 is powerful way to implement PBL/Inquiry & even genius hour, the strategies are universal
A4 provides tools, strategies that can be used anytime and anywhere even when not full designthinking process.
It even happens to the best of us :)
Any Ts using to promote action in ?
Question 5 coming up soon. It's trickier. Deep thinking caps on tweeps.
That's great! If they're happy 2puzzle ¬ be limited by failure that's #1! They must Bfeeling good
(hashtag assist) https://t.co/2rPvjclHX9
A4 Yes! If you get stuck, ask Ss for ideas...I bet they can help you! They really do prefer hands on learning.
A4. Second a deep understanding of implementing strategy for every child! Then every subject can! https://t.co/T9FWFJIIe2
Anything that involves modelling a process, designing something: greenhouse design with photosynthesis works well
I would think so- pretty sure it is
Unfortunately limited time due to a crammed syllabus is too often blamed for teachers not allowing time for design thinking
A4. Recently read an article on a T that used a sphero to teach empathy in a novel study - fantastic idea
A4- most definitely... as a primary school teacher I can see many opportunities to use design thinking across the curriculum...
A4 I think design thinking and similar approaches require us to rethink and re-evaluate what kids are capable of achieving.
they are because some just need to be. So much pressure to achieve! sad :(
Growth mindset option - encourage (model, train, coax) them to delve deeper…
A3 to foster an sense of empathy and to empower students as key stakeholders in the design of their learning
It is an environment that does need to be created.
Q5: What other problems might we find when asking “How might we innovate our learning & teaching?” https://t.co/GAJdtPjHOv
We definitely feel that in mathematics. Many sts hate the subject because they only experience it as a pointless rush
Sorry very late getting involved tonight. A4 design thinking principles can be applied across klas by promoting problem finding
we just have to stop giving the answers ;)
A4 Integrating content across 2-3 subject areas can facilitate opportunities for Ss to design solutions using
Being a spectator tonight! Still wrapping my head around what actually is!
I bags playing the role of Matt Preston
A4 Absolutely! and it can begin in the early years. Watch a Preppy with construction material
A5; finding the problems is the step that comes before innovating ones teaching and learning, so find the problem, not the answers
A5 That mindsets are the hardest to shift.
A5 That we have been doing it all wrong! Where to start?
The beauty of Design Thinking is that it requires a transdisciplinary approach
A5: I think if we focus on the 'what might go wrong', it can lose its impact. Rather focus on the process and lock that down well.
Good to have you along for the ride. There'll be some sites to explore towards the end.
A5) we might find that students go beyond our expectations and we can't keep up with them
Recently used a picture book to teach Ss to infer and was chipped because I was using a different text. Go figure
The resources that Stanford Uni have made are great & the body of research is growing.
We may have some fixed mindsets that we come up against. We need to have growth mindsets and be guided by process
Can we sift thru syllabi, find common meaningful elements to get clearer picture, then infuse w real-life projects?
A5: problems don't always need solutions, sometimes the process and inquiry are deep enough to show considerable learning
A5 How long have you got? :)
A5: How much time do we have?!
Any problem found must be perceived as a step in the right direction
A5 We might find that we are ‘doing school’ instead of real learning
A4 Ideation can be used to brainstorm RQs in Humanities, themes in English - lots of post-it notes
Documentary "Most Likely to Succeed" addresses this point. No time to do everything Few but going deep https://t.co/t6HWIMBm2s
Unfortunately limited time due to a crammed syllabus is too often blamed for teachers not allowing time for design thinking
A5 society 'demands' comparative data to standardise performance so how to measure outcomes? Best learning occurs outside a test!
A5; The hard part of the problems is find the problems that are worth the innovating answers
Q5: Innovation can be a problem in itself. It's one thing to create a space of innovation and another to sustain it.
A5 Flexibility as things always tend to go in different directions
A5 That too often we focus on operating in such a way that is comfortable for tchers but not the best thing for students.
Eng is taught at this time. Maths is taught at that time. Need to redesign our thinking of teaching and make it cross-curricular.
A5. One challenge: innovation doesn't give a comforting certainty to the road ahead. Discernment is hard https://t.co/k9I4JF20U6
A5 I think educators who use design thinking might be challenged to consider the nature of creativity.
But that's not a disadvantage. New problems mean u go deeper in2 the question, see more opportunities &obstacles.
A5: barriers to innovation, funding tied to data and not the whole picture
what's been important is being open to constant iteration & refinement based on feedback & context.
Multi tasking and integration, great strategies to fit curriculum in.
A5. Some systems are more conducive to student learning than others! These need to be tested at classroom level not thrust upon
Q5: Ppl who are anti innovation. Moving into tech rich classrooms is hard when some don't have the skills https://t.co/YJQ7TvrTgm
Q5: What other problems might we find when asking “How might we innovate our learning & teaching?” https://t.co/GAJdtPjHOv
Yes, big AHA moment for me was the idea of empathy in the design thinking process. Things got real.
A5: Lots. The answer is lots. Its about how you tackle the problems that counts. Do we give up or take on the challenge!
A4: should not be 'defined' by a specific subject...a critically important way of thinking, learning, growing.
A5 That too often, because to all intense purposes, nothing is broken, why should we change?
Yah! https://t.co/YzZQPHqRym
A5) we might find that students go beyond our expectations and we can't keep up with them
Positive attitude is a pro and a motivation for others. https://t.co/BMFZ4eInvm
A5: I think if we focus on the 'what might go wrong', it can lose its impact. Rather focus on the process and lock that down well.
Design Thinking is messy, not linear - which makes it challenging
Yes, lots to take form there. Not sure it works everywhere or with everyone but gets you thinking for sure
A5 I think educators who use design thinking might be challenged to consider how tools and processes mediate development.
A5 - we tend to look at what if we don't cover something, rather than focus on how we can implement creativity into curriculum
A4 Some definite correlations in science and maths. Design thinking concepts can be used broadly.
DANIELLE what a brilliant question! we need a teachmeet for this one :)
A5 time. Ever the Achilles heel. Also misinformation misinterpretation & misuse of NAPLAN/PISA data arguably
A5: People will question us. Question our motives. Question our intent. We need to know why even if we don’t know how.
how do you mean? Do you think design thinking helps, hinders or otherwise affects creativity?
we expect our kids to think out of the box, yet we don't! Crazy isn't it. I fall into that category too sometimes
Makes learning meaningful to real life scenarios. Allows for connection & reflection with subject matter
A5 I think educators who use design thinking might be challenged to consider whether school problems need to be simulations.
A5: that instead of teaching towards a test that we will need to facilitate thinking to develop problem solving instead.
The way is the goal! 😉 https://t.co/mX8aID0uFp
A5: problems don't always need solutions, sometimes the process and inquiry are deep enough to show considerable learning
A5 We might find that our practice doesn’t align with what we SAY we believe about learning
Kindy and in the UK is Genius Curriculum...love it!
mediate and in some cases hinder development. The right tool / process is needed, too often we settle for less
Would LOVE to have that "problem"! https://t.co/Mj28LjVgjN
A5) we might find that students go beyond our expectations and we can't keep up with them
A3 Ts using Design Thinking to plan and tailor differentiated PL
A5 I find time to be an issue and at certain times funding what the kids want to do in the
A5 Importance placed on data that is narrow, and reflective of a pedagogy that has not changed for a long time.
I showed it to WA I am Vis Arts trained, now TechCurricConsultant. Advocate removing boundaries today
Absolutely! It's the learning journey itself that's the most important; not the correct answer at the end https://t.co/icWnHAk5DB
But that's not a disadvantage. New problems mean u go deeper in2 the question, see more opportunities &obstacles.
A4: is an anchor for engaging student-driven learning opportunities.
A5: the more you look the more wicked problems you find. Focus on one innovation
A5: One major problem is the school system feeds the Uni system. For one to change, so must the other.
Planning on implementing next year
A5: A crammed curriculum trying to get everything in within a year rather than thinking about things "differently"
I think DT as a mediating tool enables non-creatives (need a better description) to act as if creativity is developed.
And are afraid to learn and stuck in the past
We should be asking why we want to innovate. For what purpose? Based on what evidence or using what systematic methods?
A5 uncertainty, lack of control, not knowing where you will end up and being a co-learner is difficult.
the hard thing for some Ts is to be brave and trust in their Ss and the process
Imagine the timetable allowed for that to happen. Imagine students saw the links without us having to make links?
An to try and get a shift in school culture as a whole
Just trying to embody how I feel when there are so many options ahead & little clarity as to which should be chosen! :)
A5 A big problem is expecting Ss to think/design w'out explicitly teaching how a & time! They're used to listen:regurgitate!
This is definitely a problem especially if we try to teach by individual subject rather than integrate learning
Agreed! Yet one would love to think that all systems should be conducive to students learning! :( https://t.co/wu2fy9XSOa
A5. Some systems are more conducive to student learning than others! These need to be tested at classroom level not thrust upon
Hi friend! Glad you're here- take over from me. In trouble for slacking on dinner! Missed seeing you in Melb too.
Also consider what development is needed, appropriate and possible?
absolutely, have faith in yor children, they will nearly always produce the good when trusted
I understand time. Cardboard is a great resource. You can make anything from it. It's free from the local supermarket
Only teachers who give the opportunities for that, get that experience
Major problem here in the US
IMO much good practice in schools, classrooms & research balances systematisation & creative problem solving.
A4 Design Thinking across the curriculum
A5 some tchrs will say there's nothing wrong with their teaching, that the problem is class size
force this in the Y11/2 so they can pass tests! Build all the goodness in primary & middle, and then reject it in Y11/2
You mean like a primary school? :) (I've long said that we HS tchrs can learn much from our primary colleagues!)
A6 - How might we embrace change in technology for Ts and to help Ss
if the school provides this amazing learning evironment - a trust culture of leaning to think and thinking to learn
I wished I'd known beforehand, I would've used design thinking to invent a machine to be in two places at once!
A5 we may be forced to find our WHY and place learners wants, needs and best interests at the center of all educational decisions
That's a problem politics should/must solve! https://t.co/pc7AquP9bZ
A5: One major problem is the school system feeds the Uni system. For one to change, so must the other.
I like on creativity in research as systematic lateral thinking.
we had the funding question, so we made it part of the student problem to solve. Worked for us. Solved other problems!
A5: Innovation and problem solving isn't always about whole school, system, world wide. Start DT and innovating your own space!
. That's why PL is so important. It reminds me of my goals as an educator when I get bogged down https://t.co/uqX67AuJN7
A5 We might find that our practice doesn’t align with what we SAY we believe about learning
A4 DT is just that - a paradigm for inquiry that enables critical thinking & creative problem solving for Ss and leaders alike
The process needs to be taught explicitly like we would for any other strategy. Knowledge then becomes freedom
I always look at my own teaching if there is a problem. It's never the child
Yes my Ss find applied learning the best part of my lessons & so do i.Makes learning relevant.
Hard but crucial for good teaching! https://t.co/77avACnEwJ
the hard thing for some Ts is to be brave and trust in their Ss and the process
A5- We might see students wanting to design their own version of schools and curriculum
Interesting conversation now on about
Bec deep learning ensures Ss can take their new knowledge &transfer/use it in other settings making it useable
Still to many teacher over using text books I think
Late arrival to & can't wait to dig in! This topic is incredible!
A1 Ss share in,learn from & emulate (in own fashion) reflective exp of lifelong learners 😜
it has started happening posted quite a few links
A5. Some teachers not wanting to change how things have been done previously :(
this clip is a great one! Can be used so many ways. 👍👏
I'm wondering: Is design thinking creative? Do 'creatives' need to use design thinking? I think 1 informs the other
For mine, all development including creativity, is complex system of higher mental functions. Will check out
How might we create the conditions for innovation within the current constraints of school
with engagement and achievement getting kids to take ownership of learning
My school save all the paper boxes for us. It some of the robotics/tech stuff that my middle schoolers keep finding.
should. But when you need an ATAR to get into Uni, and exams give you that ATAR, and curriculum, you know the drill!
Just goes to show that structures are nothing if we don't use them effectively.
A5 Senior Leadership might suggest that the teachers or school aren't ready for 'innovation' ☺️
Yes skills & knowledge become transferable to real - life problems.
That problem would need some :D! ha ha ha https://t.co/OU1qShWATR
A5 some tchrs will say there's nothing wrong with their teaching, that the problem is class size
A6. How might we create a classroom in which every student is challenged and given an opportunity to succeed?
Small steps are always the beginning!
yep, agree, we can all learn off each other. Would be great to have more collab between both
It’s precisely the current constraints that demand innovative thinking
yes is great for encouraging teachers & schools to interrogate their decision making.
I am a great fan of framework
A6. How might we better use innovative designthinking inlearning to drive a culture of local community empathetic action learning.
I think design thinking can enable creativity (when it isn't yet developed), which then allows creativity to be developed
Creativity begins simply by looking or hearing. It's a very simple process.
Definitely The journey must B valued as a learning experience 4 knowledge &skill desp the trials. Then achvt is satisfying
We're lucky to be next door to one of our feeder primaries. Need to strengthen the partnership!
This is a fabulous approach.
A5: Possible problems or 'blockers'...fixed mindset, resistance to change, lack of commitment to life-long learning.
A6 How do we become more comfortable with change and accept that a certain level of discomfort is better than no discomfort at all
q6: How might we allow students to personalise their learning and follow their passions and do away with prescribed curriculum?
Anyone got good resources for actually TEACHING ?
A6- how might we restructure time to provide flexibility and support to teachers who want to challenge teaching and learning
that's the trick! We can't expect it 100% of the time, but we can try! Aim high.
Q6 How might we flatten the hierarchical leadership model in schools to enable all teachers to be leaders of learning?
Yes, transition is so massively important. We're just scratching the surface at our school.
Greatest product known to man. Playschool in Australia is testament to that
A6 g8 qtn & nicely framed here goes: how might we translate exceptional collaboration into meaningful practice
A6 How do we SEE every student as individuals BEFORE we see the curriculum that must be taught.
The King of materials. Newspaper a close second https://t.co/F9efJrkLv6
I understand time. Cardboard is a great resource. You can make anything from it. It's free from the local supermarket
A6 Don't shoot me but I'm not convinced design thinking is the best way to solve the pedagogical problems we face.
A6: How might we solve the problem of technology letting us down in trying to kick goals. https://t.co/uXo5rPVIeQ
Q6: What is your favourite “wicked problem” in education? Try starting it with “How might we…?” aussieED https://t.co/iKKT0MGWH7
It isn't a dream. Hearteningly happening. https://t.co/bqnOkc74Up
A5- We might see students wanting to design their own version of schools and curriculum
A6; How would we learn if the we removed the meaning of or the word school..
How does technology let you down at the moment?
q6: I asked them. I had them brainstorm what they wanted to learn and how they wanted to learn it.
I am a grant queen lol! My problem is that I switch Ss every 9 weeks so by the time I get money to buy, they are gone.
A6 How might we to re-empower & re-professionalise teachers, to ensure they have a voice in policy & reform?
begin with your own classroom make it safe to think to learn work with believers first
A6: There are no wicked problems just wicked answers :-)
A6: Oooh, not sure. Maybe bringing others along for the educational rollercoaster ride when they aren’t ready…
Universities are victims of tradition and now declining st # as they dont appeal 2 kids.
I know the feeling. We are on the grant train when we need that stuff
that's the problem when some get too comfortable. Hard to move them. Sometimes it's the kids too not only staff!
just had a tweet deck crash too! right in the middle of best response ever!
A6. How might we help sts (& teachers!) see that maths isn't just right/wrong, but a creative process?! https://t.co/FitfTXKD2D
A6: How might we flip the classroom in the early years!?
Research us gathering facts. No facts leads to assumptions. Assumptions are the enemy of design. https://t.co/Mu3RKZ32I4
A6 How might we use to reimagine school without the constraints that get in the way of real learning?
What concerns/issues do you see with it?
A6- How might we assess creativity?
Comfortable is almost the ONLY mindset for some.
Encourage risk-taking & fluid thinking, help Ss know that there are no 'wrong' answers. Try tchng brainstorming
A6: Allow the great teachers the autonomy to be creative and innovative and then get out of their way. https://t.co/niMmm8sIPU
A6 How do we get parents on board and shift the focus away from grades and toward learning
How might we challenge the 'status quo' while respecting experience and commitment?
A6: How might I implement tech in my lessons when there are too many restrictions.
A6: How might we create a collaborative culture where all voices are heard? How might we implement the best solutions together?
A6. How might we empower a learning if the class had 29 teachers & 29 students (same people), all had equal educational standing?
How might we encourage Ss to see their learning differently? Less 'is this right?' more of 'how can I do this better?'
I think that's a great question. How do we teach it? Really teach it, without stifling it? I'm curious too
A6 Should all Ts be Ts of thinking, literacy, numeracy (General Capabilities?) before (instead of) teachers of content?
How might we ensure that we are teaching to point of need
A6 how might we appreci8 education is NOT linear inputs=outputs, but rather,as my 8 yr old says, like a heartbeat of ups & downs!
Well said! https://t.co/n6Z9YABmYw
A6 How might we use to reimagine school without the constraints that get in the way of real learning?
How might we use data to our advantage
A5 fixed mindsets in adults can be problematic
And yet it's outside our comfort zones where the most growth happens.
A6- Curriculum changes and requirements for uni -》trying to get it right for sts + ticking mandatory boxes https://t.co/B6UDQLrInH
Q6: What is your favourite “wicked problem” in education? Try starting it with “How might we…?” aussieED https://t.co/iKKT0MGWH7
A6 promote and support teacher leadership and agency, disperse leadership amongst a collaborative culture
A6 solve with flexible assessment, &more trust of Ts to measure it. Being nice counts more than remembering some stuff from school
Great chat tonight.....I enjoyed it. Thx - I have to go!!!
A6 How might we enable Ss to become agile problem solvers that lead learning to transform the workplace and world?
No use of smartphones at school, no BYOD, no digital concept at all, no LMS
I don't believe assessment is a dirty word. It's all in how it is applied, by whom and for what purposes
A6 How might we encourage the adoption of a design thinking process across our school communities?
And students too https://t.co/4T6DSc4UVb
A6- how might we restructure time to provide flexibility and support to teachers who want to challenge teaching and learning
A6: How might we reimagine school without throwing the baby out with the bathwater? How do we determine importance?
How might we encourage innovative teaching ideas to be used by more Ts
In one word, rigour. I worry design thinking reinforces rather than challenges our folk pedagogies.
A6Human beings generally manifest their own problems from outta no where. Maybe there are no "actual" problems.
cultivating safe culture that questions are part of the safe learning environment then teach how to question
The end use should always benefit the students. We always need to have the students in mind
A6 How do we make technology work for our school/classroom
We should strengthen this peer learning, collaboration is essential.
A7. I call trick question!! Sts & tchrs are BOTH the end users - as we should all be authentic learners https://t.co/mqWT0J6nll
A7. Who are the learners?
A7: Umm, everyone - students, staff, possibly parents too… Context and purpose…
Q7: Key stakeholders... parents, teachers, students, leadership. Or am I on the wrong track https://t.co/ltKoQqkUxe
A7 Not sure what the question means. All learners (teachers and students) are the end users?
A7 Students. We're in the business of creating schools that work for Ss & their diverse learning & cultural needs
unfortunately was too expensive to cover teachers in this - so only a few of us got the opportunity.
A7 would be nice to include Parents.
What pedagogical probs do we face? Without design thinking, we continue to do what we have always done.
A6 are also working within time frames mandated + with other school/state priority programs
A7 - End Users would have to be Ss and Ts as well as potentially the rest of the school community
Nice, lovely students and colleagues. That's wonderful. Try to make the best out of this situation! 😉
Similar story over here. Cost ends up being the limiting factor, which is a shame.
will catch the est later guys. thx
Being nice, useful, helpful, empathetic definitely is almost all that counts IMO The rest comes out of need https://t.co/Wuh5JP22Am
A6 solve with flexible assessment, &more trust of Ts to measure it. Being nice counts more than remembering some stuff from school
A7. Teachers, students, parents, the community
need process when thinking about curric, tech and pedagogy. The design process sketches and evaluates before final design
then question the vision of leadership, is it clear & concise in naming the innovation as a priority?
A7. The end user will or should be the learner! But could be the system managers if systems are not effective!Communication Chanel
a grade 3 Tchr coming in to yr 11 maths class - suddenly realised the importance of times tables!
For example, I don't think DT can adequately enable us to understand and maximise the pedagogical opportunities of DT!
A7: Must include outliers - as more diverse/extreme ideas - the students who don't want to be there - WHY? Ask them....
Rule1 make it relevant 2 the lrning expn'ce & have it enhance it so the tech allows what couldn't o'wise be ach'vd
A7: anyone that benefits from the teaching and learning that goes on in school is an end user.Must have a broad lens when we plan!
I’m not a fan of HW… It has the ‘work’ word instead of learning :)
A6 How do we assess learning and not compliance?
A6-How might we create a culture of authentically celebrating innovation in school? $)
it's about mixing up instruction - design thinking cannot live on design thinking alone :)
I think it's best if u give teachers the tools & time and let them figure out how the innovation happens.
Whoah…I’m not sure I even understand that! Are you going all complexity theory on me here or what?!
Right. You can't name 1 group. School are all together - students, teachers, parents, ... It's a unit. https://t.co/ECy5g5IS9s
A7 - End Users would have to be Ss and Ts as well as potentially the rest of the school community
Got distracted watching the Olympics. Next week!
A7: Effective teaching & learning at our uni produces great teachers, counselors & admins who make a better world for their Ss.
Hammering them at the moment. Some kids respond well some less so
Like everywhere! I know it too. Unfortunately!
A7: End users are Ss, Ts, admin, parents...but keep in mind that some could be reluctant 'end users' who need support/convincing.
I agree, if you mean design thinking can't enable us to understand (pedagogically) design thinking.
nah, gotta be in their shoes. Real picture, kids reactions, lessons, Prim yard duty is a killer!
But the same constraints in edu have been around for so long and new ways of thinking are not winning yet!
Students. They are the reason for everything we are doing and why we are doing it.
HMW discourage teachers from creating interactive worksheets using GAFE tools? ☺️
A7: I think the whole school community needs to be on the same page. Why we do what we do and what it means for parents, Ts & Ss.
Q8 in two minutes folks and then a bonus for those people who enjoy some takeaways...
This guy is my hero! Now that's what I call mechanical advantage.
A7- students and parents may feel trepedation- want comfort in explicit instructions to achieve success https://t.co/7x6PcHNslu
A7-Agree- put them as primary. Research shows parents focus on things that don't matter and Ts can have bias
design thinking has been a part of our processes when building blue apprentice, which also models DS for Ss
Only homework if the kids see it as work not fun\learning!My experience is kids love Learning! https://t.co/yKkAlOxxDG
I’m not a fan of HW… It has the ‘work’ word instead of learning :)
don't assume all tchrs want/like change no matter how much time/tools they're given
"We can't solve problems by using the same thinking that caused the problems." Albert Einstein https://t.co/xhLZyXjl7p
Thanks to and for another awesome chat, have to leave early to ensure school work is ready for tomorrow
We need people who can create their own solutions. Can be hard for some to grasp
A7.1:end users can be anyone & they all benefit from thinking like this to establish a "what if?" society. https://t.co/4Qy2StJzSZ
There are very few people who want/like change. But everybody I've ever met likes improvement.
Agree w/ Zeina. It's called organisational inertia. Can be incredibly bitter at times, too.
yard duty for HS, kids just like doing their thing, will chat etc,But Primary.OMG.Crazy, exhausting!
+ (1/2) A7 The use of a Design Process (Thinking) starts with students developing empathy for the other (client) .
No, I’m afraid it depends on what the teacher sets. Much of it is definitely work!
agree! Yet current accountability 4 schools & Ts is focused on one part of , what is the impact of this?
you really have to parse out both - which is hard to do because we inherently (and mistakenly) link both...
+ (2/2) A7 Then provides students with an ability to define the task, explore and realise solutions (outcomes) .
I would involve my stakeholders 2 design assmt & use it as way to redefine & improve
A8 Develop critical analysis skills, learn to filter good from bad quickly. Rapid prototype lessons, throw things out if needed.
A8: I love change, but I know others don’t Allow them to own the change, so that they feel more in ‘control’ of it.
A8: PD - because we are looking learners, teaching is a learning process too. So learning by doing! Try out new things.
Not a fan of HW. Kids need a break and so do I
A8: we need to let go of the content expert reins, take risks, learn with Ss - no shame in saying "IDK, let's find out"
A8: I love evolving as a T! I thought everyone was like this!? Have an open mind and give something new a go!
What happens if the end user is a gov using the outcomes to create another standardised assessment? Aaargh!
A8: Explore and embrace a growth mindset...give deep learning a real chance! 😊
agreed, once the S declines, we have to respect their voice and protect their vulnerabilities
A8: "Everything you've ever wanted happens one step outside your comfort zone" - take steps forward. https://t.co/BPJ3e030Dr
Sadly too true https://t.co/V2Vvi53QE7
don't assume all tchrs want/like change no matter how much time/tools they're given
PD yourself - we rely on formal PD too much.
A8 By approaching change as inquiry, as action research, as rather than as solutions and absolutes.
peeps seems 2 there are a lot of design thinkers right here right now imagine if we all walked through each other's clssrms?
Exactly! It's a wicked battle.
Yes totally, the problem is that DT doesn't provide a way to understand and determine pedagogical rigour.
Twitter and is the best example!
Old Chinese proverb: To change with change is the only changeless state
A8. I don't like change. I love improvement. Show a teacher how a change is an improvement and they'll buy in. You got to sell it.
A8: Explore and embrace a growth mindset...give deep learning a real chance! 😊
A8- Becoming flexible practitioners--》reducing prof fear of failure + increasing confidence in the new https://t.co/uqwkSG0hmN
