#FLedchat is a virtual meeting place using Twitter. Educators across the state of Florida come together on Wednesdays at 8pm EST to discuss the topics of the week.
Hello #FLedChat
I'm Tammy and I'm super excited to be leading the team tonight. As you say hello, share your favorite color for no particular reason at all.
This week we did something just a bit different. Our questions are on a QDD https://t.co/gF1grC0WsR
I will be using some of them, but definitely not all. You all provided excellent questions.
#FLedchat
As we get started tonight, we will use the Q1/A1 format until a conversation breaks out. Also don't forget to add #FLedChat to your tweet so we can all see your brilliant commentary.
I am quite well, though this week has been extra tiring! LOL are you good? I havent been on my #singinguntilChristmas thing like last year... #FLedchat
A1. I think of assessment as something to guide instruction--like preventative health care and grades as the end--as in autopsy--nothing more you can do for it. #FLedChat

I don’t have any grades, though occasionally I will grade projects done in my class for other teachers. “Is this graded?” Is my least favorite question #Fledchat
A2: Our school luckily employs a myriad of assessment tools: rubrics, narratives and letter grades, depending on the area/teacher. District uses a traditional grading system. #FLedchat

A3: I try to look at everything wholly...though I do look at the differen components..such as Vocabulary, Writing, Spelling, Read. Comp., etc. #FLedchat No real weights.
I know I'm throwing the questions out kind of quickly. To get to the true crux of the situation we have some background to cover. Here comes the next one. #FLedChat
A3. I would like to think that I would if I had to do grades again. Larger projects with more work involved would be worth more. Summative assessments following, then classwork. #FLedChat
#FLedchat
A3: No. I am not weighting specific assignments, yet there are requirements from the district to set up our Pinnacle grade book using weighting.
A4: I'm inclined to believe that the project/task bullet points are all somehow accounted for, or that the student communicates his or her understanding based on the essential ideas. #FLedchat
A4. It depends on what the student is required to do to demonstrate mastery. Most requirements of the project, paper, etc. would constitute mastery. #FLedChat
#FLedchat
A4: I struggle with trying to refrain from "charging students points" as most general rubrics seem to try to snag the Ss here and here. Ding them.
A4: I wish we didn't need to convert this to a number grade. With that we lose the qualitative data that gives all the important information. #FLedChat
A5: I have categories to have a holistic view of the different areas that make up the whole. #FLedchat Vocabulary, Writing, Read Comp, Responding to Reading, etc. #FLedchat
#FLedchat
A5b: Yes participation is included using the listening and speaking standards. And in each subject as they address L/S and communication skills. 1-5 scale.
** Q6 **
How do you feel about compliance grades? (Grades for returning signed docs, field trip forms, etc.)
Or even in exchange for supplies?
#FLedChat
As a social studies teacher I struggle with this concept of "mastery" ... how does one "master" the effects of the creation of the Federal Bank/Reserve as an 8th grade student? #FLedchat
I see participation more as a behavioral issue. I don't include it in my grades. I feel participation is already included when they do the work I assign. #FLedchat
A6. I am opposed to that. Although I will admit to buying my daughter's Spanish teacher the ingredients for virgin pina coladas for extra credit. #FLedChat
compliance/participation should not be involved in "grading" as they are not based on standards ... although they slip in when Admin requires "x" number of grades per quarter. #FLedchat
A7. It's so challenging for teachers to keep up with their regular grading, but if I know a kid is working to the best of her ability & needs 1-2 points for the next grade up I'd be willing. #FLedChat
A8: I recently had a student "retake" a quiz they didn't perform well on, second chance, practice more, opportunity to build confidence...it's about the learning. #FLedchat
A8.2: If our end-of-the-day goal is learning, there should be opportunities where possible to master by reteaching and reassessing. #FLedchat or alternatively assessing even.

#FLedchat
A8: I'm still a work in progress trying to help the Ss learn for mastery. If I can get them to desire to learn for mastery, then I'd feel like I'm teaching for mastery.
A8: When I taught math, I had "redo slips". Students had to document learning opportunities and have a parent signature before a retest. It was voluntary.
#FLedChat
A7. I like the idea of reteaching. Not so sure about retesting. (There seems to be too much of that as it is.) Maybe reteach and have them correct missed questions on the first test. Then they earn partial credit. #FLedChat
#FLedchat
A8: Every single day I'm reteaching something in some subject in small group and trying to figure out how I didn't catch that they had that misconception.
Agency is ten %. Behavior can be reflected here but also only place I reflect late work. Not great with keeping record this year though. I could use more effectively.
Yes, yes and yes again. And when we do that, learning is more well-rounded and even maximized. And they is a reason for students to treat everything as learning going forward. #FLedchat

A9: Ultimately I want the students to reflect on his or her level of effort, and identify what they can improve on as they move forward. Learning doesn't stop but assessment, albeit "self" is a roadmap #FLedchat

A9. I would hope that the grade would communicate the mastery of the standard(s) the student had achieved. That's what I always liked about standards based grading. #FLedChat
I'm thinking more along the lines of listening and speaking, not participation. No to participation grade. Yes to listening and speaking and communication development.
I asked my Ss this week what they thought. Many hadn't considered it before. Now they are. They appreciate "bonus grades" but also want their grade to reflect mastery. #FLedChat
I wonder if alternative assessments could work, recording a video to demonstrate or orate? #FLedchat Maybe on @Flipgrid which now has rubrics! woot woot!

As we wrap up, I know we barely scratched the surface. Please feel free to add your comments to the post on our website. https://t.co/5UadRlIuiN#FLedchat
I believe that when we allow for this, we give students voice and the opportunity to build upon where they have strength. I think that is phenomenal! Powerful platform! #FLedchat

I encourage you all to explore your own thoughts about Grades. Talk with your colleagues. Share your ideas on our website. Let's take the conversation deeper. Maybe on Voxer...(right @dene_gainey )

Oh yes Tammy, I think you laid this one out very well, from preparation to the actual chat tonight and fitting all 9 questions in, Thanks and great job! #FLedchat
