Why is this important? My staff need to know I am there for them and that I am communicating effectively. #LeadLAP

A2 I think being out and about when the kids are there. I have seen good principals pop in rooms just to be there and check emails at that time, much more immersed than parked in their office. #LeadLAP
A2: I am not sure if this is time saving or not. I am at school an hour and a half before others and usually there after everyone leaves. This is the time to get my administrative work done so I can be immersed in the school while Ss & Ts are in the building. #leadlap
A1: My passion is in making education fun, engaging, and relevant for my students. My passion is in preparing teachers to help with this by providing fun, engaging, and relevant professional learning for them. 🙂 #leadlap

Being organized. Having a place for everything and everything in its place.
Stumbling around trying to find materials is no way to conduct yourself as a educator. Be prepared and notice the stress of teaching dissipate exponentially.

A2b: This year I am also trying to be more mindful about how I spend the time while Ss are in the building... Instead of a blank calendar, carving out the time to purposefully plan for the important work of being in classrooms and with Ts and Ss. #leadlap
A2: This isn't time saving, but always be reading, writing, creating, or talking to someone about learning/culture. Continual LEARNING. This stuff is on my mind always because I have such a responsibility to my Ss that I couldn't be happy with myself otherwise. #leadlap
A2: Lists, sticky notes, preplanning, setting time frames. All of these help me on the go. It is so easy to get bogged down. Using prioritizing definitely allows me to see where a majority of my time is spent each day. Reflection at the end of day helps as well. #LeadLAP
A2: I think this is where goals can help keep your focus so that all the things you choose to do are purposeful. Being in classrooms and participating in all the great things is important. You can't be immersed by sitting in your office. #LeadLAP

A2: I have a daily checklist of 5 things to do each and every day. It starts with visit 5 classroom and ends with write 1 thank you note. If I don’t get to something, it becomes my priority for the next day. If I miss two days in a row, I know it’s time to refocus. #LeadLAP
I do that, too. On occasion the custodians remind me I need to leave. I love the energy of the day and the peaceful time to reflect & plan at the end. #leadlap
A2: Time saving strategies that help with Immersion:
*Stay connected to Ss & Ts via email or other tech methods to respond promptly.
*Teaching SEL/Mindfulness to save time later as Ss can self regulate
*Prioritize by Ss first, then Ts, then the paperwork & red tape.
#LeadLAP
A2: I wanted to be in classrooms all day. I tried to stop calling Ss out of class. I went to the classroom and 1 or 2 next door, observing, leaving feedback, and then speaking to the S privately. To lead a culture you have to be seen in all parts frequently. #LeadLAP
A1: My passion is justice. I believe that education is the great equalizer. We have a moral obligation to meet the needs of ALL students. For this reason, as a leader, I MUST take care of my staff, who serves our youth. #leadlap

A2: The importance of getting into classrooms, doing bus duty, and getting into the lunchroom each day are my focus. Also, being the model of positivity, kindness, and resilience I want from the staff and students #LEadLAP
I find time during the weekend to review my calendar for the upcoming week. I then put reminders on my schedule for walkthroughs and essential conversation. If I don’t put these things on my calendar, my time gets eaten up by task instead of my priorities. #LeadLAP

A2: My strategies are simple. Note what I need to do (like grades, prep for IEP meetings, conferences with Ss, writing letters of recommendation) and set deadlines for myself. I like the @momentumdash app. It helps me. My Ss like it too. #leadlap
A3: Rapport isn't always about what you say, it is about how you say it. 93% of our communication is non-verbal. Do you love your job? Love the people around you? Love your kids? Love today? Pssst...tell your face. ;) #leadlap
A3: I also have a T IG account where I post pics of what Ss are doing (& sometimes pics of my dogs). It builds a relationship w parents that they can see everyday what Ss are doing & allows Ss to have a new connection to me & peer into my life & what’s important to me #leadlap
A3 Since I see so many middle school Ss I ask them every class to let me know how they are- with the ? below I have been able to connect w/Ss over things I may have never known-it’s been amazing. #leadlap
A4: I do this all of the time. Completely changed the schedule this year (first year in the building), added two more recess times. Also transformed staff meetings to more teacher centered, less me centered. #leadLAP
A4: We have a weekly all MS assembly. The first one of the month is led by me. To keep my Ts and Ss in the “loop”, I went through and projected our behavior, attendance, testing numbers compared to previous YTD. It was an eye opener for my Ts but my Ss were most impacted #LeadLAP
A3: In K, this is a number one priority. Some areas are very remote and dark, and there are many social issues in these villages.Creating social events, morale-building activities, after-school & weekend community involvement, and being there to provide love & support. #leadlap
A3: Look for opportunities. Realize when you are in that rush, rush, rush phase and slow down. Whenever appropriate I try to respond to Emails with personal responses and take a minute to check in. When in class, hallway, lunchroom-take time to connect with S’s. #LEadLAP

A4 Lunchroom setup. Last year myself and the other 2 deans at our middle school made it a point to redesign the setup of the lunchroom to be less rows and more creative interactive and non-industrial. Kids loved the set up and it was very efficient. #leadlap
A4: We changed our first day of school. It was a big New Year's Party. Greeted staff and families with noise makers, confetti, and signs in chalk welcoming them back #LeadLAP
A4: Made a BOLD move this week. Having Ss prepare a webpage via @AdobeSpark to recap/show their 1st qtr learning. Target audience? Parents (conference is Thursday). Ways to show learning? Up to Ss. Targeted areas? 5 main content areas discussed in class. Fingers X. #LeadLAP
This year I am trying an #AugmentedReality pumpkin patch for our school. I took the day off and will be in the hallway all day on Oct. 31st to create a virtual experience with the students! I am hoping it will be #Amazing!

Some say we leave our personal life out the door or at the parking lot. How can we build relationships without sharing a part of ourselves? #LeadLAP#TENph
A4: We had a talk about sharing our school narrative. My principal at the time & I wanted to do something different - so we did a video for our school. Lots of people helped contribute - but it shows a lot about our school. Better than a letter! #LeadLAP

A4: At the beginning of the year I created a First Day of School photo booth for Ss and their families and wrote welcome back at the front entrance. Normally we don't do anything but I felt like we needed to show some excitement about having our Ss return! #LeadLAP

A4: I made a mistake in building relationships with Ss. I could have brushed it off as their fault for "not getting it." Instead I took ownership, & told Ss why I became a teacher, how much this means to me, and that I want to make it right. Relationships strengthened! #leadlap
A4: I'm working on making school fun for staff. Trying to figure out how to have a whole day game of tag based on this : https://t.co/0p6naCLfIz#LeadLAP

I don’t consider this transformational per say, but bold for me. I signed up for the Cowhide (our rival football game) staff dance. It’s way out of my comfort zone, but being my 2nd year at my site, I’m hoping it helps build rapport with students and staff. #LeadLAP

A4: We wanted to celebrate instructional risk. We started Pineapple Awards and Pineapple Visits. Basically, I can't see anything pineapple without thinking of great lessons and risk taking Ts. The key was celebrating the risk takers publicly & celebrating strategic risk. #LeadLAP
a5 I think it is important to both pick out what can be learned and seal the envelope on information that seems counterproductive at the time. I do hold onto those envelopes, though. #leadlap
A3: For Ss, I’ll eat lunch with the Ss, talk to them in the halls, give them high fives or 👊🏽, console them when they are upset, send emails when they are sick, bring them little presents when they are being awesome, and joke around with them. #leadlap
A4: We used to have an advisory period which we changed a few years ago to #FalconsCARE with a focus on #CommUNITY service projects. Students & staff connect through similar interests. From landscaping to quilting & everything in between. One of my favorite things 🧡💙! #LeadLAP

A5: I just continue to do what I love to do.. improve my Ts craft and offer the feedback. I’ll continue doing what I’m supposed to with a smile and positive thinking. How the bitter respond is on them. #LeadLAP
A5: I'm working on taking the softer approach... but it's difficult. I continually shout out those who are taking risks, trying new things and searching for greatness. I let them share and hopefully others will join the positivity train #LeadLAP
By being professional. I do not have to like everyone to be able to work with them.

The work is never done and time isn’t on our side. Every year has its challenges. We do our best to make our school family a place we would want our own kids. Knowing we won’t make everyone happy is tough. Knowing our heart is in the right place is key. #LEADLap
A5: The best advice I received when I was an Ocean Lifeguard re: angry tourists— “Kill them with Kindness”. It has helped with critics looking to sabotage. I fully believe in go high when others go low. #leadlap
I'm right there with you, as a first year AP. We have focused a lot of time on strengthening our PLCs to meet the needs of our learners and teachers. Feeling so grateful for the amazing opportunity. #LeadLAP
A4: We turned over as much PD as we could this year to teachers and scheduled time for “Genius PD”. Teachers are empowered to learn what they want to learn about and then come back and share out. #LeadLAP
A5. I try to have conversations to gain empathy and understanding of their views; but if someone chooses to be negative “then when they go low, I go high” and I try to model positivity and kindness and focus on what’s good for kids. #LeadLAP
Have you considered doing a small scale #edcamp? Could be a great way to get teachers learning about their interests and sharing their strengths with each other! #LeadLAP

A4- my favorite is transforming the first day of school! Dance party last year and teacher banners and cup challenges this year! Ss can’t wait for day 2 😀#leadLAP

A5 Critics may provide me with a point of reflection. They may be a catalyst for relcaibration or iteration.
But negativity doesn't get me down.

Using criticism to make you better instead of bitter is all about interpretation of criticism. Receiving criticism is a skill. The ability to internalize it as feedback about behavior(s) as opposed to an assessment of who you are personally is the hinge point. #leadlap
A5: Working with others who criticize is hard:
🌟Know your Why and push back gently but firmly
🌟Stay positive in the face of negativity
🌟Lean in to their emotion without caving in (sometimes they just need validation before crossing over to your side).

Critics can be tough. When I get “beat up,” I vent to a mentor and then I reflect. Reflection usually drives me to make changes in how I communicate or work with people. I try to focus on solutions instead of allowing my myself to wallow. #LeadLAP

This is a huge point and can get you into further trouble if you misinterpret. I try to assume good intent until there have been a few examples to realize the intent is destructive. #leadlap
A5: You keep being you. Don't give up on them, either. Their reluctance could be about you or it could be about something else. There might be some gold in there if you keep working at it. #leadlap
A5: I drown out their grumbles & comments. My hope is that others will see my passion & listen to my WHY & turn their not so nice comments (or lack of participation) into something more positive! If it’s best for the Ss I won’t let negative Nancy’s bring me down! #leadlap
A5-Hence why we need to make sure that we hire the right people. The “I” cannot be greater than the “We.” Look for people that have positive character. They don’t have to agree with you, but they need to travel with you.#leadLAP
A5: This happens to every principal. I respond to them the way I would to challenging students. Talk with them, praise their "good," ask them to try just one thing & let me know how it worked, & LISTEN to them (they may have a good reason for being critical). #leadlap

A5: If someone is critical of something I’ve done, I start by appreciating that they told me and then I try and seek understanding. And then I reflect on what I could have done differently. #LeadLAP
A5: I stay grounded in my WHY and filter criticism through that. I stay open to all perspectives and am a better leader by carefully considering others who see things through a different lens. But if it doesn't fit w my WHY & is there to sabotage, I dismiss and move on. #LeadLAP

A7: Share with them when you see them taking the lead! Encourage them to do it again! I became an administrator because my AP believed in my & gave a gentle push - I think I can do that for others too! #LeadLAP
A7: By leading boldly! Providing very specific feedback/praise when others are bold. Thanking them for courage and vulnerability. Be who you want your people to be. #LeadLAP
A6: Two things in my perfect principal world: personalized learning like @dellwein and a #FabLab like @bobby__dodd! We have created an awesome #makerspace in our Learning Center & a #STEM class for all 7th graders. We are moving in the right direction! #LeadLAP

We moved to one bell schedule for 6/7 grade and 8th grade transitions at another time, without a bell at all. Tough at first, but it has helped so much!! #LeadLAP#NorthToTheFuture#AKPrincipals#BoldSchool
A6: Curriculum team recently had 2 days of district-wide personalized learning; focus around the district strategic plan and every staff member had choice; meaningful and relevant professional learning; so proud of all of my colleagues! #LeadLAP#ThisIsWe

A6: Taking a stand against prioritizing standardized testing and, instead letting real-world connections, student engagement, and authentic assessments drive instruction. For this, you need superintendent & school board support, otherwise it's a battle. #leadlap#AKPrincipals
I rarely use MC in math. I'm finding magic in highlighters & mass communication instead of writing out comments on each paper. Multiple ways to give specific feedback faster. #leadlap
Oh I’ll kill them with kindness. But we have to remember that we are in the business of building up others and not tearing them down. There is not room for that type of behavior in a school building. We have enough of that in this world. #LeadLap
A7: Reminding them that mistakes are a part of the process! However, that environment to feel comfortable in making mistakes needs to be there before those conversations can begin to happen! #leadLAP#TXed#edleadership#EDUchat#edugladiators
A6: This is one BOLD thing I'd love implement. Thank you @Wes_Kieschnick for the amazing idea. I'm interested in learning how you started this with your staff. #LeadLAP
A6: Leadership is about LEARNING! One BOLD move I've seen implemented across schools is the #observeme movement. Inviting others into your classrooms/schools to provide feedback and developing a culture of observation, feedback, and learning is HUGE! #leadlap
Choose one thing a month! I found this helps! I see so many amazing things I want to do them all - then it gets overwhelming! I chose the mobile office first b/c I thought it would impact Ss more! #LeadLAP
- Thanks, Henry! Good seeing you yesterday!! ...but like I shared yesterday, a shout to my man @Joe_Sanfelippo for challenging MY thinking with the 30 seconds at a time. (Credit to him on that one.)
A6: Saw @tsocko’s presentation on going gradeless in the classroom at #MassCUE18. Opened my eyes. I’ve been thinking of how I could go about doing it in my 8th grade ELA classroom.
#LeadLAP
True. I realized there was no way to win them over. The more I tried, the worse I felt. You are right. I just focused on strengthening other relationships and finding allies. #leadlap
A7: By modeling it! Also recognition/praise and sharing about their successes will make them (Ts or Ss) be bold and do something amazing again! #leadlap
A7: A Social Studies T emailed me and asked if she could help plan content PD for our district. I helped her run with it and we just brought in Rethinking Schools and Zinn Education Project for a teacher initiated PD. The Ts all loved it and now she wants to do more! #LeadLAP
Lead with a mindfulness of the joyful responsibility we are entrusted with. Every day, parents hand us the things in life they value most. They hand us their children. Own that responsibility. Love that responsibility. Live that responsibility. #BoldSchool#leadlap
A7: To encourage risk taking by Ss & Ts:
☠️Model-make sure Ss/Ts see your risk taking
☠️Discuss why risk taking is necessary for leading BOLDly
☠️Provide opportunities for Ss to lead (and take risks) frequently
#LeadLAP
A7: Encourage them to do so, notice & appreciate them when they do, and model for them what that looks like. Also, share the positive results that occur when this happens. #leadlap#AKPrincipals
A6: We also borrowed @BethHouf’s idea of room service and have turned it into weekly #SwoopSnacks delivery by our @mrsle_ccmsls’s amazing students! It has turned into a Wednesday afternoon pick me up for staff and a nice compliment to our #Swoop Coffee Shop. #LeadLAP

A7: Lead by Example; model leading boldly everyday; then provide the needed support when their feelings of self-doubt creep in; be their biggest cheerleader; be in the arena! #LeadLAP
As leaders, we have to first be bold leaders. It’s important that we don’t discourage innovation by focusing on what could go wrong and that we highlight and applaud risk taking. Students and staff should not be afraid to fail. We need a growth mindset culture. #LeadLAP
A7: Model it. Share the greatness of your staff. Acknowledge risk-takers and leaders. Give opportunities for growth. Make listening a priority. Grow from mistakes. #LeadLAP
A4: I used a scheduling issue to finally be bold and run our first LCSD EdCamp. I sent an email out to Ts to see who wanted to help and found new T leaders who are ready to go. They all helped run our first one. It got great feedback so we want to try more! #LeadLAP
Thanks! The experience taught me a lot about myself. I saw things in myself that I didn’t like. I’ve been working on these things ever since. Still working and improving. #leadlap
Hey #LeadLAP, I’m out and about with kids but I’d love to chime in on these fantastic questions throughout the day.
I’m Ryan from Milford, MA. Host of Pondering Education podcast. Curriculum Coordinator. 8th grade ELA educator.
I had a similar experience. Sometimes people interpret joy and optimism as a threat. I can't relate at all to that, but it certainly is a thing. #LeadLap
A7: I love to find ways to say YES! It encourages risk taking, supports innovation & creativity, & provides a safe place for them to experiment & maybe even fail forward. I love reading student proposals & listening to their ideas. If I can find ANY way to say yes, I do! #LeadLAP
A7: Ask for volunteers to facilitate our after-school learning lab for teachers. #leadlap No one can lead better than those down in the trenches every day! Teachers know what works!
A7: Encourage others to lead boldly...
-Cast your vision of a shared leadership culture.
-Use empowering language.
-Make their leadership development a priority.
-Shatter the information silos and create opportunity.
-Get over yourself.

I’ve been doing that, and it helped me immensely! Feel so much more at peace and I still have my joy. Great advice! I share this as a lesson for others. I probably should blog about it. #leadlap
Bold discussions about grading policies and homework...I believe it’s important to reflect on this topic often with colleagues so that we’re certain what we’re doing is best for kids. #LeadLAP

A7 just started “moment of awesome” to start every 7th grade class where any S can send me something to share to spotlight themselves or something they’re passionate about-trying to encourage leading by being proud of who they are. #LeadLAP
A6: To build a school culture of reading. Where Ts and Ss are reading and talking about books together - recommending them. Can’t keep kids out of the library if I tried kind of reading culture. 😊#LeadLAP
A7: You have to model the boldness. Get out of your comfort zone and try new things. Highlight students and staff when they go for it and lead boldly! Support and give opportunity!! #LeadLAP
A7: I’ve been talking a lot recently w/ Ts about collective teacher efficacy. We’ve got to believe that we have the ability to do great things for kids. We’ve got to believe that we are better together. I think staff needs to hear more that I believe in them. #LeadLAP
A7: Jay, listening is the key. When listening, we must use our heads & hearts. Risk taking is indeed important, but we must be sure that these risks are reasonable. Also, we must be reflective on our actions. Otherwise, we lose sight of the impact of our actions. #LeadLAP
A8: Thanks to @saschnit I will be making time to intentionally reflect on the day! Thinking of starting with 3 positives, 2 things to improve, and 1 question to spend time thinking about... #LeadLAP
A8: My call to action this week: Ss who show up for P/T conf on Thurs. will lead the conf. They will show their Ps the webpage they created to show learning & walk their Ps through it. They have access to their grades 24/7 so the focus will be on learning not grades. #LeadLAP
A8: I'm going to take the joy you've given me this morning & ROCK the keynote this morning at the Alaska Principals Conference. Thank you all for helping to feed enthusiasm for our wonderful profession. You give more than you'll ever know! #BoldSchool#NorthToTheFuture#leadlap
