#TeacherFriends INTROS! Where are you? Your edu-role? New here? Need Twitter support?
When you were in the grade that you now teach, how did you feel about Math? Where were you on the LUV/Hate continuum?
#TeacherFriends WELCOME! We know how busy you are, but our little chat is here weekly to encourage, support and inspire. Jump right in! Follow other participants to expand your PLN!
#TeacherFriends I'm currently on a cruise in the Caribbean on my birthday-eve! Doesn't get much better than 'scheduling' my greetings to all of you, while I sail about in paradise.
Ordinarily I'm an author/illustrator of pic books & music lady in southern FL. Life is good!
HI, #teacherfriends. I love this time of year. Cherishing every moment. December is busy but so worth it. I currently teach 5th grade. Little people are still my favorite. :)
#TeacherFriends Q1: How is math fluency defined at your school? Does everyone have the same definition? How do you communicate your definition and understanding of it?
#TeacherFriends A1: In my grade, it is the ability to add and subtract with 5, but be exposed through 10. We count to 100, but expect recognition of numbers to 20. Fluently counting/adding/subtracting.
A1: Math fluency is often thought as something a student can do automatically, without thinking, a task that is different at each grade level #teacherfriends
I would say the definitions of math fluency in our school would be knowing basic addition and subtraction facts. Multiplication and division in upper grades. #teacherfriends
A1: Fluency is speed, accuracy and, most importantly, flexibility. Math RR have allowed us to zoom in on the needs of the Ss and respond instrutionally. #teacherfriends
A1: I'd say fluency is technically defined around here as efficiency with number sense & strategies, but I think many people still equate it with speed & memorization of facts. #TeacherFriends
Yes! This is key to their future success. They need to visualize what numbers represent. We need to be able to see numbers and explore how they work together. #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends Here is a wonderful explanation from Dr. Nicki herself if you need insight into tonight's topic. Try split screen and listen to her as you chat. https://t.co/IKTP5vj5Pv

The Learning Trajectories talk about the levels for counting (there are 20!) composing and decomposing (5) and subitizing (10 levels!) It's amazing work #teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends A1: Our leveled centers have many opportunities for counting, grouping, adding and subtracting.Hands-on is still so important. We do kinesthetic subitizing to feel it too!
#TeacherFriends You can have two browsers side by side in windows to multitask.Or you can watch it later, lol. I do cheat during chat at times for more information. Dr. Nicki's videos are great.
#TeacherFriends Q2: Does every teacher at every grade know the continuums for math fluency? How do you communicate at your grade level? Between grade levels?
#teacherfriends A1 academic mathematical vocabulary is MUST for math fluency. Be creative in how you reach your Ss. #tlap moment on how to teach functions. https://t.co/8YRQ7bfPvt
I also think it is really important in Early Childhood ed that we reference the counting principles... there are 5.... because.... they help us to get really clear on what we are doing and to be able to speak about where our kiddos are exactly... #teacherfriends
The standards again support what needs to be taught. The problem at times is that our Ss may not be ready for that concept. Filling the gaps can be tricky. Even in K, when Ss have no 1-1 or counting experience. #teacherfriends
Math Running records are a gps to basic math fact fluency. They help us to get really specific about what students do and do not know in terms of their facts.
#TeacherFriends
A2: I can honestly say no I am not know the continuum, I know what they need to be able to do in K but I have not looked any further than that, which I know I should look beyond. #teacherfriends
Hi #teacherfriends
I am a Special Education major still in college in Ohio!
I actually just finished my math requirements for my major today! I had plenty of good math teachers but math never came naturally to me and therefore it was never one of my favorite subjects.
#EDUC2100
#teacherfriends A2 Your state learning objectives SHOULD BE vertically aligned. The vocabulary found in the learning objectives should also be aligned vertically. It is important you stress the vocabulary in your learning objectives.
#TeacherFriends@drnickimath Would you say running records in math are as quick to administer/record as running records in reading? I am very interested in this.
#TeacherFriends I agree! Our new principal is having us develop curriculum maps so I think in a couple years we will have a better idea of the continuum.
A2: I can honestly say no I am not know the continuum, I know what they need to be able to do in K but I have not looked any further than that, which I know I should look beyond. #teacherfriends
I have found that it takes about 10 minutes for each operation. You learn SO much information and immediately know where S needs to focus on! #TeacherFriends
#TeacherFriends Q3: Are you using leveled workstations so that students are working in their zone of proximal development? Share examples. What challenges do you encounter using leveled workstations?
#TeacherFriends A2: True story: I ask our 1st gr teachers each year about skills they see as problematic. A few years ago they noticed Ss sounding words as: c-a-tuh! It is not how I teach it, but since that convo, my students know we do not end words with tuh for t! We must talk!
#TeacherFriends A3: Use leveled stations, but note they must remain the same most of the year to help students gain confidence and fluency. Must spiral station work to help them retain learning.
A3: I love stations by Marsha McGuire. They are tiered. I have T1, T2, and T3. Ss know to start at T1 and if it's easy move onto T2. I love (and the Ss love) the walk around the room adding/counting ones best. #TeacherFriends
#TeacherFriends Q3: Are you using leveled workstations so that students are working in their zone of proximal development? Share examples. What challenges do you encounter using leveled workstations?
A3: #teacherfriends I try to have a variety of different leveled math work stations, so each student can find something on their level, below their level (if they need it), and above their level (to challenge themselves). I'm able to help all my students succeed this way!
What I like about Math Running Records is that they have been around for a long time. So they are a theory that has been tested for years. I simply made them accessible to classroom teachers. #TeacherFriends

It is a student interview so you do them with paper and pencil. It is the same format of a Reading Running Record. The teacher stays attentive to every detail of the interview. #Teacherfriends
#TeacherFriends Q4: How are you monitoring fluency? Have you tried Math Running Records? What are the benefits? What are the challenges? How do you overcome the challenges?
They are administered orally. Pt1 is benchmark expressions - 1 for each strat, pt2 questions about the strategic thinking. P3 math disposition. #teacherfriends
A4: #teacherfriends I do monthly checks/benchmarks and I also use lots of observation, conversation, and interactions to help me understand what each of my students is thinking.
#TeacherFriends A4: Am monitoring during guided group time, but will try to implement RR. It makes sense. Targeting who needs intervention should be easier.
#teacherfriends It has been exciting to see teachers around the U.S. and Canada begin to use them and get great information that moves student success. They have been translated into Spanish and French!
Sorry I'm late! I was making some gifts for leaders tomorrow night. Saying thank you to volunteers is so important. Melissa - I teach 3rd. #TeacherFriends
#TeacherFriends I will archive in Storify if the internet cooperates. Tweetdeck has seemed sluggish, but will try to get it done tonight. Will notify when it is ready.
#teacherfriends Math Running Records can be done from the end of K thru at least 8th. At the end of k it let's you know if students have fluency within 5 and 10...
A5:I think some are beginning to show some self monitoring, others just keep guessing until they think you will give them the correct answer. #teacherfriends
#teacherfriends.... a running record has 3 parts... the first part checks for automaticity, strategy, and accuracy... part 2 takes a deep look at flexibility and efficiency... part 3 looks at students disposition
#teacherfriends it is really important that we consider student's dispositions... remember that that is 1 of the 5 elements of mathematical proficiency... it is the only affective element

Call quickly if you have $$ that needs to be spent in 2017. My husband, Allen can help you sort it out.
Hey you. Yes YOU! You’re awesome. Come and share your ideas about how important it is to show our students that we are crazy about them. I know you have amazing ideas to share. I’ve seen them. #TeacherMyth chat starts in 5. See you there! #BetterTogether#TeacherFriends
#teacherfriends... The self-monitoring piece is essential... students need to know where they are and where they are going... I'd be careful with the public walls of shame/fame... but do something where students can privately monitor...
#TeacherFriends I'm now scheduling author/illustrator school visits for 2018 in FL & SC. Design a day to your specifications. Let's talk! Send me a direct message for more details.
what happens with public tracking of facts is that some students are completely demoralized while others are celebrating ... but if they self monitor then they can all celebrate their individual successes #teacherfriends
