#fcpslearn A1 What makes a "good learner?" Purpose, Passion, Autonomy, Feedback. Good learners have a purpose for learning, know their passion, are motivated by autonomy, and yearn for feedback.
  • megan_hacholski Nov 13 @ 8:36 PM EST
A1: A good learner realizes that they are never done learning. They take every opportunity in life as a chance to learn something new, even if it doesn't go how they expected. #fcpslearn
  • PHausTech Nov 13 @ 8:36 PM EST
A1: A good learner is simply one that is always seeking knowledge. They may learn in a different way and to a different level, but their passion drives them forward. #fcpslearn

  • moler3031 Nov 13 @ 8:37 PM EST
A1: I used to think someone who does all of their work, quiet, etc... abut someone who can problem solve, perseveres, shares with others, and communicates! #fcpslearn
  • PHausTech Nov 13 @ 8:37 PM EST

#fcpslearn A1 makes me wonder how the public would respond to this Q.
    In reply to @moler3031
  • KristenSevinsky Nov 13 @ 8:40 PM EST
A1: Risk taker, knows strengths and weaknesses, knows what they know and don’t know, knows how to ask for what they need. Tenacity and grit. Sets goals, makes a plan to reach goals, constantly reflects. #fcpslearn
  • effortfuleduktr Nov 13 @ 8:40 PM EST
A2 - Engagement with the material...and for me, engagement is what the brain attends to. #fcpslearn
    In reply to @ScottLewisITC
  • PHausTech Nov 13 @ 8:41 PM EST
A2: Passion (inner drive), resources, commitment, grit, and a #growthmindset all enable someone to learn new things. #fcpslearn
  • megan_hacholski Nov 13 @ 8:41 PM EST
A2: Ability to listen. When we tune others out in favor of our own voice, we make it impossible to learn. #fcpslearn
  • PHausTech Nov 13 @ 8:41 PM EST
    Gold. #fcpslearn
    • ChristineBemis2 Nov 13 @ 8:39 PM EST

A2: Self-motivation, determination, goals, engagement, mental capacity, resources, and the access to (desired) knowledge. #fcpslearn
  • loliveira55 Nov 13 @ 8:42 PM EST
A1 The definition of a good learner depends on the person who is define the term. For me a good learner is one who has an inquisitive mind, doesn't give up when things are tough, finds help when they need it, and shares their knowledge with others. #fcpslearn
  • Shapiro_WTHS Nov 13 @ 8:42 PM EST
A2 - Patience, personality, positivity towards school. Having the ability to reflect on what’s being taught. Of course, family life and mental health are also key. Intrinsic motivation to be better is a key driver. #FCPSlearn

A1 Good evening from South Carolina. A good learner never stops learning & brings those around them into their joy! Little heads tilt. Mouths drop. Eyes grow big. Wisdom spills out. Oh, the joy! #fcpslearn

A2 Posess the knowledge that's being built upon. E.g, some understanding of the language, vocabulary, ... #fcpslearn
  • loliveira55 Nov 13 @ 8:45 PM EST
A2 There are internal factors such as desire, motivation, drive, etc that are controlled by the learner. Then there are the external factors that the learner can't control such as environment, supportive adults, access and opportunity, differentiation, etc. #fcpslearn
  • PHausTech Nov 13 @ 8:46 PM EST
A3: The biggest roadblock to learning is often mindset. Not just fixed versus growth but also compliance/standardization versus empowerment. Testing is a reality but should run what we do. There are many paths to greatness. #fcpslearn
  • megan_hacholski Nov 13 @ 8:46 PM EST
A3: I think ego is the number one roadblock to learning. Whether we think we know it all, think we know better than someone else, or think we don't need to learn.....it is only ourselves that stand in the way of learning. #fcpslearn
  • Mr_Oldfield Nov 13 @ 8:46 PM EST
#fcpslearn A3 A focus on what's easy to grade is a tremendous roadblock. The obsession with grading behaviors and compliance stand in the way of learning. The state of prof lrng, building capacity in teachers, is sometimes a roadblock. See what Hattie's work says abt prof lrng.
  • MonsieurBracken Nov 13 @ 8:46 PM EST
A3 - Lots can inhibit learning: personal life problems, access to basic human needs, access to technology/knowledge, so much that teachers can't necessarily control can have a negative impact on their ability to learn. We have to learn how to overcome those w/Ss #FCPSlearn
  • CreditFlex Nov 13 @ 8:47 PM EST
    What is #fcpslearn?
  • Shapiro_WTHS Nov 13 @ 8:48 PM EST
A3 - List here: 1. Sleep and lack of it 2. Stress from self and family etc.. 3. Internal drive 4. Teacher apathy 5. Lessons that don’t excite 6. Lack of challenge 7. Too much challenge 8. Sitting too long 9. Minimal breaks #FCPSlearn
  • LindaEdwardsi Nov 13 @ 8:48 PM EST
A3 Roadblocks are low self esteem, fear of making mistakes and feeling unsafe #fcpslearn
  • Mr_Oldfield Nov 13 @ 8:49 PM EST

  • megan_hacholski Nov 13 @ 8:51 PM EST
A4: Let your guard down and accept the fact that you don't know everything, and you definitely don't know best ALL the time! Especially when it comes to Ss - it is OKAY to let them be right or know more than we do! #fcpslearn
  • PHausTech Nov 13 @ 8:51 PM EST
A4: For me, modeling growth over one time performance snapshots as well as thinking first of student empowerment in planning removes most roadblocks. #fcpslearn
  • MonsieurBracken Nov 13 @ 8:51 PM EST
A4 Make sure that students know that when they're with you, they can let go of some of their mental roadblocks. Make them feel safe in your learning environment & help them find that space they need. I was able to do this with my drama students! #FCPSLearn
  • loliveira55 Nov 13 @ 8:51 PM EST
A3 Some of the roadblocks that my ELs face include language difficulties, need to work to support the family. In general terms sometimes the roadblocks consist of an environment that isn't condusive to learning. This may mean disruptive Ss, lack of resources etc. #fcpslearn
  • KristenSevinsky Nov 13 @ 8:51 PM EST
A3: Past experiences of failure, lack of engagement, developmentally appropriate, vague expectations, lack of feedback #fcpslearn
  • Shapiro_WTHS Nov 13 @ 8:52 PM EST
A4 - Reflect on practice, be aware, adjust on the fly, know your students, plan diverse lessons. Lots of choice and mixed lessons that promote confidence but also challenge the status quo. #FCPSlearn
  • moler3031 Nov 13 @ 8:53 PM EST
A4: ways to remove those roadblocks having conversations, building positive relationships, providing choice. #fcpslearn
  • ChristineBemis2 Nov 13 @ 8:54 PM EST
A3~ ~lessons that don’t engage, excite & allow input from all stakeholders ~negative staff ~materials/resources used that do not reflect the diversity in our classrooms ~classroom where the tchr does majority of talking #FCPSlearn
  • CreditFlex Nov 13 @ 8:54 PM EST
A4 Incoherent curriculum that does not build up knowledge layer upon layer #fcpslearn @ClassroomWonder
  • JennMBarnes Nov 13 @ 8:54 PM EST
A3 The biggest roadblock I've seen to authentic learning: Just doing things the way they've always been done before. #fcpslearn

  • megan_hacholski Nov 13 @ 8:56 PM EST
A5: Support risk-taking. Support student-centered, flipped classrooms. Allow and encourage the atypical classroom - loud, messy, but ENGAGED! #fcpslearn
  • PHausTech Nov 13 @ 8:56 PM EST
A5: The biggest thing a school or district can do to remove roadblocks to learning is stand united with common vision taking any opportunity to reinforce it with both words and actions. #fcpslearn
  • CreditFlex Nov 13 @ 8:56 PM EST
Oops. That was A3 #fcpslearn A4 would be...
  • LindaEdwardsi Nov 13 @ 8:56 PM EST
A4 I do my best to make students believe in themselves, they can do it 👍 Be a cheerleader and help break down tasks into smaller pieces to help fill the gaps #fcpslearn
  • MonsieurBracken Nov 13 @ 8:56 PM EST
A5 I think having schedules with time in the day for clubs can go a long way - allows students to go do something "fun" that isn't necessarily related to curriculum but still offers a chance to grow/learn in new ways. Could easily do this as a once/month day. #FCPSLearn
  • loliveira55 Nov 13 @ 8:56 PM EST
A4 I advocate for my ELs by making sure that they have the resources/tools they need to be successful but also by constantly reminding my ELs that with the acquisition of English and content knowledge their lives with become easier in and out of school. #fcpslearn
  • Shapiro_WTHS Nov 13 @ 8:57 PM EST
A5 - Provide PD for parents snd families on how to promote listening and also address what’s already going on in school. #FCPSlearn
  • ChristineBemis2 Nov 13 @ 8:58 PM EST
A4~ ~build a classroom built on mutual trust, respect and #teamworkmakesthedreamwork mindset ~ongoing relentless ❤️ for your Ss & their families ~Ss do the heavy lifting = maximum impact & exponential growth #FCPSlearn
  • JennMBarnes Nov 13 @ 8:58 PM EST
A4 Live as a learner in front of your children. Encourage risk-taking. Make room for their ideas. Pose questions. #fcpslearn
