#Resiliencechat#Tidbit#play can mean many things to many people, and many things to many children, and is more than likely one of those human traits that no matter where you are from, what your culture is, you more than likely played as a child. It is alas human as we can get!
#Resiliencechat Have you considered the importance of #play in the life of a child, as an adult, and in the world in general? How does it impact #resilience?
This morning Mr. MIT and I braved ice and snow to get to medical appointments. Out patient surgery in dermatology office for him, and heart monitor and cardiologist for me. #resiliencechat

A1) Play is the business of having fun doing something. For kids, this means they are using their imagination and solving problems they’ve self-generated. Can there be better conditions for learning resilience? #resiliencechat
A1 Well, all work and no play and all that. But there are so many different ways to connect to people and to feed our souls, and we need that variety. Including and perhaps most importantly play.
(Bill, grade 7-12 girls school teacher from Western Mass.)

A1: the people I know that are well adjusted have found their version of play to maintain balance, whatever brings joy and helps them look forward with a positive perspective #Resiliencechat
A2) #Resiliencechat I am warmed up inside when I see children at play. In many cases, these acts allow their minds to safely experiment with their world, bend perspective, often without limits, and then se something that might never be seen by someone outside of their perspective

A1 When I did the inner child work, I had an interesting dream. I dreamt that I was hanging out with family (wasn't married at the time), and the TV set rolled down the hall to us to look in on us. We didn't need the TV. We were connecting on a deeper level. #resiliencechat
So true Bill @bivey There is no one way to play, which I believe is important. The heart mind and soul seek unique ways to engage in #playful activities that are unique to individuals. #resiliencechat

A2 Planned play can help kids (people) work toward a more explicit goal, while unplanned play offers more of a chance for creativity and developing/refining social skills. IMHO.

Meaningful memory. Many times simple #play allows for free think, time to grow, and a way to not rely on technology or other things to communicate. #Resiliencechat

A2) I prefer spontaneous. sans expectations means the opportunities are endless. Scheduled play is nice, too. I’m not sure bad play exists. It tends to come with expectations, but even that can be a benefit (extended play over multiple visits). #resiliencechat
A2 I prefer spontaneous, but probably both are good. I personally think that spontaneous play comes from a place of joy more than planned, but perhaps I am wrong about that. #resiliencechat
A2 #Resiliencechat I believe that both offer benefits, and varied experiences. The meaning of the #play is often owned by the #player, even if we plan for the player to learn a specific thing. Th learning can be so unique to the learner depending on their focus.
Funny that you mentioned technology. I didn't even have a TV before I met Mr. MIT. While i am glad for the internet, I find that I get too overwhelmed by too much "noise", ie, TV, and other distractions. #resiliencechat
Great point! Sometimes we confuse being busy or consuming technology with #play and many children think they are #playing when they are on a video game, which is one form of play, yet, I think brings about different types of reactions. #resiliencechat

A3 I'm taken back to my childhood when us kids in my neighbourhood developed a game we called "Frisbee tag." We started with the concept of trying to hit each other with a frisbee, and it grew from there. Some nights, we had several dozen of us playing.

A3 Interesting question from my standpoint. My mom, who was a wonderful woman in many ways, simply didn't understand what spontaneous joy I felt being able to create. #resiliencechat
I wonder how much research the video game and online industries have purchased to keep them building new ways to #engage students, that are in contradiction to these inherent curiosities? Or re they feeding it? #Resiliencechat
A3 She couldn't wrap her mind around my ability to make up stories and come up with dialogue between my stuffed animals and me. Even now I still "talk" to stuffed animals. #resiliencechat
I sometimes wonder what type of disservice we have done to many children by building forced youth leagues, rather than allowing them to play, grow, and learn together. #Resiliencechat The #sandlot next to my home was a ball field, war zone, tag field, etc...

A3 I came home from school one day and discovered she had tossed my stuffed animals. Heartbreaking but I think that she could not distinguish between childish and childlike. #resiliencechat
Haven't they researched and learned how best to feed and manage these curiosities for that perfect balance of challenge and success? Don't they know just how to shape our brain chemistry so we'll want to keep playing/screen-timing?
#ResilienceChat
I think there's a place for both, ideally. But that said, there's no question that I've seen youth league coaches (and parent-fans) I wouldn't want anywhere near my kid, and others for whom I still feel trust, gratitude, and even love.

A3 When I talk about this aspect of my mom, I try to keep in mind that she was the daughter of immigrants, and no doubt her feelings were colored by the harsh realities that caused them to come here. #resiliencechat
That is heartbreaking. And that distinction is so important. Back when I was a teenager and still attending church, our minister did a great job of emphasizing how one was fundamentally important throughout life even as we should work to outgrow the other.

A4: the types of activities individuals choose for themselves is an indicator of extrovert, introvert spectrum. Most people enjoy activities that are introspective and overtly communal at different times #Resiliencechat
I think it’s a very interesting problem Some like @avantgame have used games and #gamification to help people find themselves and get better, while other gamers might be focused on the $, rather than helping others live their lives. #Resiliencechat

Enjoying #ResilienceChat and seeing my friends (though missing @saratruebridge), but my no-more-screens alarm has gone off and I must get some sleep.
Be well, y'all!
Q5 #Resiliencechat How can we capture the energy from playing, and use Play as a skill, rather than consider it something that is a luxury? ( I know my question is different than the picture) Choose either to answer. #playerschoice

A5: at the end of the day the most important things that we do require reason, and many forms of play enhance our skill set in this crucial area #Resiliencechat
Q6 #Resiliencechat This is supposed to say, “Could collaborative #play be the essential element needed for solution-oriented people who can work together as they grow?
A6 Very interesting question. Despite the fact that this has been a very difficult year for Mr. MIT and me, we are experiencing more joy as well. Less arguing and more playfulness. #resiliencechat
A7: some of my most memorable and passionate discussions involve the good old bar questions "what is the best" "who is the best" those annoying no consensus questions #Resiliencechat
